|April 26||Confederate Memorial Day Historic Event|
Gov. Sonny Perdue has proclaimed April as Confederate History and Heritage Month.
In 1874, the Georgia General Assembly approved legislation adding "The 26th day of April in each year-commonly known as Memorial Day". April 26 marks the anniversary of the end of the War for Georgia, as it was on this date in 1865 CSA General Joseph E. Johnston surrendered his troops to General Sherman at Greensborough, North Carolina.
Each Confederate Memorial Day, the University of Georgia's Main Library places the original Confederate Constitution on display from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m.
For those with Confederate ancestors, Confederate Memorial Day is a wonderful opportunity to remember those who served.
