Looking for a link to establish Joseph Henderson's birth in Charleston, S.C. and the identity of his parents. There is a Alexander Henderson buried in one of the church cemeteries there who died six months before Joseph was born. If that was the link, then we can trace the family back to Northern Ireland and before that to the west coast of Scotland. There are no other Hendersons listed in the city directories who were of an age to have a young son. There is no mention of a Joseph Henderson in the City records.

Born on September 22, 1826 in Charleston, South Carolina. Source: New York State Census of 1850.

The 1850 U.S. Census lists Joseph (23 - Pilot), Angelina (18 - wife), and Sarah R. living in New York.
