I am looking for the parents of George A. Greer who was born in 1860, died 1914 and is buried in Greer Cemetery in Richland Parish. His wife was Blanch Deloris Smoot. Their family is found on the 1900 and 1910 census of Richland. If anyone has information on his parents, I would appreciate receiving it.

I have about 30-35 letters written by a steamship steward during his journies along the Beouf River (he was based in Alto during this time), and I am willing to send you copies should you wish to have them. They were all written between 1870-1872 and give an excellent account of life along the river. The writer, my GGG Grandfather, was a Union Soldier who decided to stay in LA after the war (he had a girlfriend in Alto)and worked for Wild Duck Barges. His first ship (SS Salato?) caught fire and sank along the river and he later worked on the SS Franks & SS Cherokee. Although most of the letters center on flirtation, there are some excellent accounts concerning cargo, passengers, illness, unfathomable heat, and the general suffering these men endured (especially this fellow as he was a Yankee and thus not too popular). He eventually married his girl, hence the reason his letters were preserved and the reason I am here. It took four years, but I finally overcame the shock of having Yankee blood in my veins! Anyway, the letters are most interesting so please let me know if you would like to have copies. I also have several others (written around 1872) by residents of Alto.
Sincerely,
Melissa Brown

My grandmother was Irma Buie. She was the daughter of Wiley P. Mangham. I had some wonderful childhood experiences in Rayville.

I am just starting to try to trace my roots, at an advanced age might I add. My father was born in Richland Parish in 1881 and orphaned at age 4, so I have very little and sketchy information about my family history.
