This is an advance notice of my book, which is to be published in September/October 2000 by Birlinn Limited, Edinburgh. It is entitled MULL- THE ISLAND AND THE PEOPLE, and is about the inhabitants of the island of Mull from 1600-1900. A large number of MacPhails belonged to Mull, including the bard, Dugald MacPhail, whose song, an t-eilean Muileach became the Mull anthem. His family were drovers in the 18th century, coming originally from Glenforsa. I myself am descended from MacPhails, and had a particular interest in giving them a place in the book. You will be glad to know that they are a remarkably sensible breed of people in the annnals of Mull, and that they do not compete with the iniquities of the Macleans and the Campbells ! The book is about 600 pages long, with 80 illustrations, family trees, maps, index to 1100 individual names of Mull people, and fully annotated references so that readers can pursue lines of enquiry about their own people. I don't have the price yet, but it will probably be ú25 sterling ($36 Can). If you send me either your postal or email address, I can send information as soon as the flier comes out, with the names of the world distributors, the price, the ISBN, and so on. I look forward to your help in making this book well-known to all our clan and to other Mull descendants.
