Actually, my great grandpa Sgt. John A. Lawhorn, who was Col. Frank Wolford's aide decamp. in the 1st KY Cavalry. He was from Casey county. Grampa John is still listed as a deserter from the infantry, when in reality he left them to serve honorably in the cavalry. Like to get that record corrected!

I am in search of my Ancestor's Families path to Illinois. That is where my Family settled in the 1830s, Greene County, Illinois. Those relatives seemed to have arrived from Tennessee.
I am also wondering if another Ancestor visited Mercer County, Kentucky. He was the Reverend John Gano, who was General George Washington's Chaplin during the American Revolutionar War. After the War, he traveled Kentucky, doing Revivals and various Prayer Meetings all over the state in the 1790s. His son, Captain Daniel Gano founded Covington, Kentucky. I am in possession of the Gano geneology book dating back to 1610, from France. Also, I have the Mathias Crum Sr. book, who arrived in Virginia in 1765 with his Wfe and five year old son John who was a Revolutionary War Vet. He settle on 100 acres he recieved for service in Clark County, Indiana in 1803, after living in Jefferson County, Kentucky since 1796.

I do not at all mind questions in reguard to my books and their listings. Call me @ home (859)854-3464.

Earliest known Mercer Co. Ancestor James Wright
Arrived (appx year) bet 1794 -1797
Comments:
I am looking for information on a James Wright (middle name believed to be Walker). He was born abt 1767 in NC. His wife was Aseneth (Freeman?). He had the following sons James W. Wright bn 1794 SC, William Wright 1797 Danville, Ky, Amos Wright 1798 KY, Thomas Wright 1807 in St Charles, MO. I know that they migrated to Ste Genevieve Dist, Missouri Territory. He remarried in 1816 to a Flynn. By 1819-1830 the Wrights had migrated to SW Arkansas living in the Sevier/Little River Counties region. Suspect that he was related to Claiborne Wright, pioneer and first county sheriff of Old Miller County, Arkansas.
Other researchers have his brothers listed as Obadiah, Amos, William, John, and another James. Any body have information of this family residing in Danville, KY and other relations please contact me.

Our (Bowdon, GA) local Civil War hero, Col Charles A. McDaniel was wounded at the Battle of Perryville and died in the Exchange Hotel several days later. He was buried in Harrodsburg, but his body was shipped back to Bowdon some years later. Please put me in touch with someone who might be able to determine how it was that his exact burial spot could have been located. Were there markers? Visited there in September for the Generals Barton and Stoval Historic Heritage Association congress. OUr records show he was buried in the "old Masonic Cemetery". Have you heard of this? The proximity of Spring Hill to the Exchange Hotel would make it reasonable for burial to have been there. It is just a question that has bugged me since the visit. How did they know where he was so they could dig him up and send him back to Bowdon?

How do I find out about donating a Smith Family History book to the Harrodsburg Genealogy library? In November of 2006 I self-published a 536 page book including index on Hugh Smith, his wife Mary Hutton Smith and their children, who married into the Todd, Comingore, Dickson/Dixon, Campbell, and other families of Mercer County, Kentucky. The time period in Mercer County is from about 1786 - 1832. Other earlier states are also mentioned as in Pennsylvania and Virginia. The line of descendancy carries through to 2006. Thank You. Earliest known Mercer Co. Ancestor Francis Montfort Sr
Arrived (appx year) 1784
Comments:
My ancestors were of the Low Dutch Colony in both Mercer and Shelby/Henry Counties in Kentucky. Hendrick Banta 3rd, the leader of the colony is my 5th great grandfather twice...trust me on that. I also have a strong connection to the Shaker Village at Pleasant Hill with 5 direct ancestors among the first to join in 1805, John Banta and his wife Polly Riker Banta; their daughter and son in law, Polly and Francis Montfort Jr, and Charity Banta Montfort [Charity is half sister to John and both are children of Hendrick Banta 3rd through each of his two wives.]; Francis Jr is the son of Charity and both son in law and nephew of John and Polly Riker Banta. Francis and Polly Banta Montfort Jr had three children when they joined the Shakers, John who left in 1827 and married Susan Minn or Miner in Shelby County [Ky], Charity who left in 1828 and married Isaac Bonaparte Fallis in Shelby County [Ky] and David W. who left in mid 1827 and five years later married Mary/Polly Cook, daughter of Seth and Francis Wilcoxson Cook [and great grandniece of Daniel and Squire Boone] I descend from David. I have a website on the Montfort family if anyone is interested in both that family and any connected to them...Boone, Wilcoxson, Cook, Faulkner, Hawkins, Banta, Terhune, Riker, Brinckerhoff, Haff, Alberti and others who settled in New Amsteram, New Jersey, Pennsylvania [Conewago] and Kentucky in the early 1780's.
The website address is http://bar-b-k.tripod.com
it is entitled THE MONTFORT FAMILY: A NARRATIVE...I invite those interested to check it out but also please, realize it is a work in progress.

Barbara

Please advise how or who I may contact to evaluate any Mercer co. records that may be available on Sterling Lambert. He moved his family from Mercer Co. to Parke Co. Indiana in 1818. During that time frame I would hope he or his immediate family would have records. I do not know his fathers name although I believe he was an Englishmen from Virginia. Thank You.

Dear friends

I've recently been contacted by other McAfee researchers about a possible McAfee decendants reunion.

Before this project progresses any further I felt that the society should be brought in, and any advice or help that could be offered would be appreciated.
Is there a contact list of McAfee researchers?

If this is of interest to anyone please contact me

Recently spent 2 nights in Harrodsburg, touring and checking into some family stories. My mother Eunice Blanche Whitenack was born there. Saw the old homestead on Whitenack Road. Also found much info about my grandfather's (William Thomas Whitenac) killing of his brother-in-law Sept 3, 1899....And all that has got me digging into the family and trying to find out what really happened. Be glad to have any information about the Whitenacks of Harrodsburg or the Wickershams of Cornishville (my grandmother was Serina O'Dell Wickersham).
Now--back to enjoying the site.

Wonderful site

I am a direct descendant of Vincent Lester who appeared first in the 11 Jan 1790 Fayette Co, Ky Tax list, the area then became Clark County, where he lived till about 1800-1809 then he moved to Pulaski Co, Ky before 1810. He died in Pulaski Co, Ky in 1850. I believe he may be realated to the Lester of Mercer Co, Ky.

His children are James, William, Vincent, John, Zachariah, Jesse J, and one daughter Jemima. I have good records on his family but I am looking for his ancestory.

Actually it's Charles' sister Catharine McKinney Powell that is my ancestor. I'm looking for their father... Have read much about brother Thomas McKinney in land records of Fleming County. Big family, (there were 9 brothers and sisters); landowners, lots of children of their own. I like to read the earliest records possible. They appear in so many interesting events. I am also interested in Sally Shepherd's family, Woodford area at the time the county was formed. I believe her father may have been John. Sally marries Basil Tout 17 Jul 1795 Mason Co, KY.

Isaac had two other brothers, Richard and Tom who I believe were in the area, too, but I can't be sure. Their father, George Fallis was a William Penn colonist. Any additional info would be treasured. Good luck to all!

I am trying to seperate the two Richard Huffs one in Mercer Cty in 1830 census and one in Hancock Cty. in 1830 Census. Two marriages Sally Hazle and Nancy Davis and which one md which or did both marry one. I am descendant of John Huff of Hancock Cty. believed to be son of Richard. I believe the Richard of Mercer Cty is son of Wm and Mary Hungate Huff not the one in Hancock Cty. So where did the one in Hancock Cty. come from? Which line of Huff is he descended from? Good site I can see a lot of dedicated work here. Thanbks.

Earliest known Mercer Co. Ancestor Capt. Samuel Scott
Arrived (appx year) 1780
Comments:
Capt. Samuel Scott was not actually my ancestor. Instead, he is the person who was the REAL militia captain of that name in early Lincoln County, VA. He was "transferred" to Mercer County upon its formation.

The DAR has mistakenly identified a member of my family (Samuel Scott Junior of Washington County, VA) as this militia captain. But Samuel Scott Junior never migrated west from Washington County, VA. He is in all early Washington County tax lists beginning with 1782, when he is listed next to his father Samuel Scott Sr. Sam Jr. died in Washington County in 1811.

The REAL Captain Samuel Scott appears to have migrated west in 1779 or 1780, probably also from Washington County, VA. He had a land entry on Dicks River recorded in February, 1780. He was one of the original Lincoln County militia captains appointed in January, 1781 (Lincoln County Court Order Book, page 3).

I was writing because I found a posting on the internet by a Mary Baker who wanted information about her father-in-law, Roger Wayne Baker. Well, Roger Wayne Baker is my father-in-law, born 12/31/50 and was given up by his real parents at age 3 and was taken in by the Smith family in Lexington. If anyone knows Mary or James Baker, please pass along this information to them as my father-in-law would love to meet his son that was taken away at age 5. He is in ill health and it would make him feel much better to know that he has made his peace with the events that have occured in his life. Also, my husband, Roger Wayne Baker, Jr, would love to meet his brother, as his and James other brother, Billy, passed away in Oct. 2000, and Roger doesn't want to miss out on the opportunity to meet his only other brother from his father. Any info you have or can pass along would be wonderful.

Earliest known Mercer Co. Ancestor Etta Van Arsdale
Arrived (appx year) Born 1859 Harrodsburg
Comments:
Dear Mercer County Historical Society Friends,

My name is Joel Gillespie and I live in Greensboro NC. I am trying very hard to connect my Van Arsdale line to other Van Arsdales in Mercer County Kentucky, so far to no avail. If you could give me any direction I would be grateful.

My great grandmorther was Etta (or Ettie) Van Arsdale, who died Monday July 31 in 1911 in Somerset Kentucky (I have the obit), and who was born according to her son's birth certificate in 1859 in Harrodsburg Kentucky.

She married a Christopher Claunch Gillespie I think in 1878. They had several children, mostly girls. The first three girls were born in Missouri, the rest of the children in Somerset, including Curtis C, my grandfather. So, Christopher and Etta moved to Missouri, and moved back.

One of Etta's children, Willie Mae Gillespie, married a Millard Hall and had a daughter Ettamae. At one point the Halls moved to Oakdale Tennessee, and then later to Miami. After her parents died Ettamae moved to Columbia SC to live with my grandmother, widow of Curtis C. That is where I grew up and got to know Ettamae.

When Ettamae died she left a small suitcase of papeprs and pictures. I have many pictures of her family I cannot identify. One picture is of Etta Van Arsdale mother, but no name or place is given.

Included in those papers was an interesting handwritten genaeology of a Van Arsdale family live I cannot connect to my line. My guess from the way the material is presented is that it was put together early in the last generation of the people mentioned – probably in the first half of the 1900’s. I have no idea why Ettamae had the material because as I said so far I cannot connect her grandmother to this line of Van Arsdales. If you could make that connection for me I would be extremely delighted. I also have no substantiating documents for this material. Nor do I have names of compilers.

Another Van Arsdale researcher who has been kind to e-mail em says that Ettie's parents were John Wesley and Sarah Proctor Van Arsdalen but so far I do not have substantiating documentation on that. I noticed there was a "Wesley" in the history below.

I do not know the best way to present these five generations of Van Arsdales without being able to using indentation, which does not work well Outlook Express. I could attach a Word document with proper indentation if you liked. I have used Capital Roman numerals for the first generation, capital letters for the second, numerals for the third, small letters for the fourth, and small cap Roman numerals for the fifth - -outline form.

Van Arsdale Family

My favorite section of the Mercer Co. site family trees
Comments:
Great site. I look forward to exploring many avenues in the site.
My reason for accessing the site is my own genealogical research. I would like to make contact with a Mercer County-based genealogist who, on a professional or volunteer basis, would find what they can about the John Wesley Thompson family. One note I have is that John Wesley Thompson, Jr., a Methodist minister (not too surprising given the name) was born in Mercer County on 29 March 1819. He married Catherine Etter in Johnson County, Indiana on 26 Nov 1843. My own ancestor, Nancy Thompson, a daughter of John Wesley Thompson, Sr. and therefore a sister of J. W. T. Jr., also married in Johnson County, IN. Around 1840, she married William Carroll whose family had moved from Harrison County, Kentucky to Johnson County, Indiana around 1820. There are at least two John Thompsons in the 1810 census in Mercer County. From the above, I gather that the John Wesley Thompson family had lived in Mercer County at least around 1810-1820. I would be very much interested in their origins and lineage.

I have noticed there are several references to "Barbey" or "Barbe". The only family with that name in Kentucky prior to 1892 was the "Barbee" family. In my many years of research within Kentucky, I have often found this mispelling in many counties. I would suggest if you wish to leave the roll original, do so, but put the correction in () for the use of researchers.

Thank you.

I just discovered your site while browsing. I grew up in Salvisa Ky and went to school through grade 5 at Salvisa Elementary School. My parents are now deceased, so my source of family info has dwindled. At one time I saw an extensive report done on my grandfather's side of the family, his name was William Maxwell Gritton. Unfortunately, I don't know what happened to it. If anyone has any information, I'd greatly appreciate it. Also, any information anyone might have on my mother's dad's family would be appreciated, his name was Erastus B Sanders. You're web site is wonderful and I have already spent over an hour looking at various areas. From someone who has no idea how to get started looking for family information, I thank you for all the work you have done to make it possible for folks like me to begin. Have a great day.

Daughter Frances married Robert Wilds in 1802. They, along with her cousins, the Coopers and Browns, moved to Howard CO MO starting in 1808. Townsend Fugett/Fugate died about 1812 in Garrard CO. His widow and most the rest of the clan moved to Howard CO MO. I THINK Robert Wilds was the son of a John Wilds who lived in Mercer CO late 1700s, but cannot prove it. Any clues appreciated.

I have been researching the 73rd Indiana for a number years including the regiment's last Colonel Alfred B. Wade. The Colonel spent some time in Libby Prison (being captured on Streight's raid) but when exchanged he took a steamer to Fortress Monroe. In his diary he records meeting a Molly Johnson of the 6th Kentucky Infantry during his boat ride. She reported to Wade that she had been captured and sent to Belle Island but was released when the reb's found out she was a female. Do you know anything about molly??? I have not be able to find any related material. If you can supply some help it would be greatly appreciated. Sincerely, Mike Downs

Earliest known Mercer Co. Ancestor William M. Drake

I have traced my great great great grandparents to Mercer County in the 1860 Census. Their names were William M.Drake-47 yr.old-Farmer & wife Mary A. Hampton-40 yr.old. I would like to learn what every esle I can about my Drake and Hampton ancestors. I also would like to learn when and where they passed away. They had five children:
**
1)Drucilla-20 yr old female
2)George W.-18 yr old male-Farm Hand
3)Eudora-14 yr old female
4)Madison J.-10 yr old male
5)Florida P.-6 yr old female
**
William M. Drake and Mary A. Hampton were married in Fayette County on June 10, 1839. They can be found in the 1850 Census-living in District 1, Fayette County, Kentucky. William is listed as a Carpenter in this 1850 Census.
**
I descend through their first son George Washington Drake, who served in the Civil War in the Confederate Army - his obituary dated Nov.15,1888 from the Quincy Daily Herald newspaper in Quincy, Adams County, Illinois says that George W. was a captain in the Confederate Army and served under the command of General Morgan and that he was a prisoner during the latter part of the war in the Alton, IL prison. I am hoping to find out more about his military record.
**
In the 1880 Census George W. Drake and wife Mary Altathera "Allie" Buckman live in Washington, Buchanan County, Missouri. George and Allie had four children: Martha, William, Susan aka Fannie & Mary. In an 1887 City Directory they are found living in Quincy, IL. Allie lived until 1926.

I visited the Historical Society Library in June, 2002. Did some research on Wellington Jones. While in town went to Fort H. and saw a Garrett Terhune gravesite? in cemetery there. However, in Ancestry World Tree Project says he was buried in Oakland Methodist Cemetery. I wonder if graves moved or I am mistaken about an acutal gravesites at the Fort. He came from New Jersey from an area near to where I live. Fort H. info says he was part of Sgt. Suly's Regiment in NJ Military or Militia. Trying to check this out next.

I am doing some research on the Girl who danced herself to death.

I am the media director for the DoeNetwork. www.DoeNetwork.Org

I also worked on the Tent Girl case in Georgetown Kentucky:

http://www.angelfire.com/tn3/masterdetective2/

The DoeNetwork works to identify unidentified deceased throughout the world.

I visited Harrodsburg on July 19th 2002 and took photos of your Jane Doe's grave so that we might make her a casefile on the DoeNetwork.

I found a lot of information with the help of Police Officer Howard Saller and Librarian Natalie Cox.

Some of the info on the case varies....I even found a possible link to my homestate of Tennessee. I will be checking these leads and I hope to get more data soon.

This case will be by FAR the oldest case on the DoeNetwork.

If anyone has any information on this case...please contact me.

Thanks!

Just a note to say thanks for all the help we received when we visited your city and your Socity. We did find the Champion Grave site, but it was in very poor condition, very over grown and overturned headstones. Most likely no one had been there sence the last time it was walked in the 1960's. It would be great to put that on your list of places to see if someone can take care of it before all the headstones are gone and it is unrepairable. I have photos and would love to send them to you, but no e-mail address.
Thanks Garry and LaNelda Gordon, San Antonio, Tx.

I am not sure that this John shown in your 1850 Census is my John as I am having a hard time finding his birth place, but the age matches. My John was in MO in 1870 and was born in 1842. That census shows him to be from KY and his Father and Mother were born in KY. I know nothing else about him and this is the first clue that I have been able to find in two yrs. It all started when I found a John H. on the 1890 Special Census-Cedar CO,MO records. Oh how I do hope that he is one and the same. If anyone out there knows of this family I sure would appreciate hearing. Your census shows no father, but a Mother Margaret and three children. Thank you for your time and all the work that you have done. Georgia

Pam:

You have a great...No, You Have A Great and Wonderful Site. RootsWeb and GenConnect are not what they use to be. New (there are many) users have no idea that searching their roots with the new RootsWeb/GenConnect "Ancestry.com" system is not as private as it use to be. Personal info from cookies set by their users, is being sent to every (not their own) server in the Domain of RootsWeb/GenConnect Ancestry.com partners.

The new system is just what Hackers and Spam senders love. Access To Personal Info!!!

Will be back to your site, many times. When I am finished finding my info...I will give it to you...I will not give it to RootsWeb/GenConnect Ancestry.com for them to abuse.

On Feb 28 2001, I wrote out a branch of Jesse Hiram Bowling which was in part correct as I knew it then. I have since learned that this is not my line and I have done a disservice to the names mentioned in that list of Bowling family names. I would like to retract it and apologize for getting it confused with my line. It states that Chester A Bowlin was my grandfather, which is true, but it is a different Chester A Bowlin, Andrew Co MO, s/o George W, s/o Thomas, s/o Daniel, s/o Benjamin Bowling of Madison Co KY. This line is the correct line.

Anne,
Enjoyed the library. Got home safely with no more car troubles, thank goodness. Thanks for OTL. Will write to Springate query that was in Olde Towne Ledger. Found a vital piece to the Alexander Abraham puzzle. He and ?? died in 1831 and found his estate sale in court house in Versailles. They purchased TWO coffins...so my next step is to find out if any children were appointed a guardian in court and whether there was an epidemic in 1831 in Versailles or in the county.
Kay Self Stevens searching: Kennedy, McAlister, Springates, Brights, Abraham, Self, Robinson.
