Thank you so much for this infomation. I wish I had had this information growing up. My brothers, sister and I were always teased for having a German name. The name was always made in reference to Hitler. I am passing this on to family members. This makes me feel like my family has given something to America. I am so proud. Every chance I get I'm telling someone about the information I have found out.
Thank you for a life changing experience,

I am directly descended from James & Florence (Graham) Patton, and have questions regarding the parents of James. I have the rest of the family traced from James & Florence down to the present day, but find it very difficult to prove beyond doublt who James' actual father was.
If anyone can assist me in this, I'd really appreciate a helping hand, as I'm much to far away to do any digging for myself. Some sources tell me that the Henry Patton mentioned in Col James Patton's will (mentioned as living at Springfield), was the father of James Patton (Florence's husband).

Comments:
As a direct descendent from Benjamin Weddle (1742-1807,)I find your geneology outstanding except for one detail. The Johan Michael Weddle you list as the first to arrive in North America is not the grandfather of Benjamin. There is a land warrant issued May 29, 1739, to Michael Weidle for 200 acres situated at Little Codorus on the west side of the Susquehannah River in Lancaster County, now
York County, PA. This was documented by Calvin Weddle (Clweddle@aol.com), who has done the most detailed geneological work on our Weddle lineage. We do not have a sure date and ship list for our Michael Weddle, but the possibility is that he arrived in Philadelphia as early as 1727 as noted below (from an email I sent to my uncle Benjamin Harrison Weddle of Front Royal, Virginia).

Below are some sites of interest; the first one has Calvin’s letter from the Dr. Jordan in Germany. Do you know Sallye Martin?

http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read/BRETHREN/1999-02/0919038495

The next is the 1742 ship’s list from the Francis & Elizabeth on which a Johann Michael Waidele and family are listed; we know this date is too late to be our Michael Weddle, but it is in the family oral history that our Michael arrived on this ship. It can’t be because of a mortgage between Mark Farne and Martin Wetel in the York County courthouse [dated 16-Dec-1769]. This mortgage mentioned Martin Weddle's father as being Michael Weddle and concerned 200 acres granted to Michael Weddle by warrant dated May 29, 1739.

http://www.progenealogists.com/palproject/pa/1742f-e.htm

The third is the 1727 ship’s list of the James Goodwill on which a Hans Michael Fiedler is listed. An interesting aspect to this ship list is that it lists the number of freights (4 total) and if you believe the interpretation about the freight breakdown by age there could have been several passengers. Michael and his wife would be 2 freights and could have as many as four children between the ages of 4 – 15. From my research on Martin Weddle, he would have been 9 years old in 1727.

http://www.progenealogists.com/palproject/pa/1727jgood.htm

Finally, from a Virginia family on-line listing of relatives come the names and birthdates of the children of Michael Weddle and Anna Margaret Schleppe. There were three children ages 6, 9, and 14, and one child 2 years old. On this website, one of the children is listed as dead by 1718. That leaves one half-freight unaccounted for. Maybe a child of a relative or friend came across with them? However, on Calvin’s list that child’s death is not listed. Do you or Calvin know the woman who compiled this family geneology, Laurie Howland?

http://www.rainyday.ca/~howland/html-va/dat48.htm#0

I have not been able to find any other names that may be spelling variants of Weddle during the appropriate time span of ship lists except for George Adam Wedel on 1729 Mortenhouse, Wilhelm Moritz Veitel on 1740 Robert & Alice, and the Johann Michael Waidele on 1742 Francis & Elizabeth.

William Baxter Godbey of Pulaski, Kentucky [born 3 June 1833] , was an evalgelical Methodist whose autobiography, published in Cininnati in 1909, can now be found on the Web. He was directly descended from your Pulaski, Virginia people. His work contains the following:

"The last time I ever saw my grandfather was while I was his presiding elder. I visited him when 96 years old, when he had me assist him in making an invoice of his family, which at that time numbered 500 souls, twenty-five of whom were licensed preachers of the Gospel. As names have originated from circumstances, of course our family received its name from the fact that of their eminent godliness, the original name being "Godly". Some one at some time writting it happened to place the 'l' by a 'b'."

I have now found a number of Godleys living in Pulaski, KY who had Virginia roots. Some descended from a William GODLY born about 1810 whilst there is also a John Godley (who could just, possibly, be Rev William baxter's grandfather) Area church records show a Josiah Godley joining/leaving in 1898-99 only to rejoin as Josiah Godby in 1900. Moreover one web searcher has a marriage record for a Martha Godley (Godby) ca. 1862.

There certainly seems to have been some mid 19th century confusion in Virginia. Charles O. Godley, born Tazewell, was the son of Reason (also spelt Rezin & Resin) Vermillion Godby/Godbey/Godsby who was a ninth generation Virginian and clearly related to the Rev William Baxter Godbey whose grandfather spoke of an historic change of "l" to "b"change. Reason also had a daughter, born 1822, who was listed as Martha Godley at the time of subsequent marriage. There is also evidence that there was another daughter who went by Laura M. Godly.

My own family tree is virtually complete. I descend from Edward Godley of Farquier VA who was born in NJ before the American Revolution. But we have no ideal where his father William came from. Family tradition says it was Virginia.

What does anyone know of the historic Godbey/Godley mixup?

You have not responded to my previous note, nor to repeated emails.

There are a number of SERIOUS ERRORS in your Patton lineages which I am willing to help you correct. In addition to errors in two lines I discussed in the prior message I wish now to address the Henry Patton line. You state:

"5. Henry3 PATTON (Henry2, William1); born 1660 in Caiggo, Dundee, Scotland; married Sarah Lynn, daughter of David Lynn, circa 1685; died 1743 in Clondevaddock Parrish, Barony of Kilmacremon Co., of Dublin (Ulster) Ireland. [1], [2]

He was ship builder, operating merchant ships.[3] He began military service between April, 1689 and August, 1689 Henry Patton and three brothers were in the army of William of Orange during the defense of Londonderry and later was present at the Battle of Boyne, July 1st, 1690.[4] He immigrated after 1690.[5],[6] He lived after 1690 in Manor of Springfield, Parish of Clondevaddock, Barony of Kilmacrenan, County Donegal, Ireland.[7]" Then you proceed to list an INCREDIBLE 17 supposed children by this man and his long-suffering wife.

A few points.
1. Henry was surely born in Ireland, not Scotland; this is where his father lived his whole life.
2. Henry was NOT a ship owner, that was his son James. Your source got it wrong.
3. You list as sources mostly Virkus, and World Family Tree. Anyone who has done genealogy more than as a hobby knows that Virkus is only a finding aid since not a single source document is cited in the whole Compendium. And WFT is only as good as the sources that are given. In fact the "American Lineages" by Dr Charles Patton [which you cite as Coming to America] SPECULATES that Henry had a dozen (not 17) children but this is only based on men named Patton living in Lancaster Co Pa at the same time.

News flash- almost ALL the Scots Irish who came to America settled in this area for a year or two before moving on, whether they were related or not.

Sorry to sound critical but I have spent 20 years studying these lines and I feel it is IRRESPONSIBLE to wimply quote secondary and tertiary sources as gospel. Beginners tend to accept this sort of easy answer without thinking.

If you wish to discuss these matters I am always available.

David V Agricola M.D.

Your Southwest Virginians website is most impressive. I think it is a good idea and can lead to progress in research in this area.

I would like to draw your attention, if I may, to what I perceive as a few problems in your writeup of the PATTON line of Ireland and then Augusta/ Montgomery Co Virginia. I have, in fact sent you several emails about these problems over the past year, but it is possible that you have not received them.

First off, under the children of John Patton, will probated 1757 Augusta Co Virginia, you name Capt James Patton, married 3 times, who was a founder of Louisville Ky. That is what the old (1930's) historians said, and I bought into that also. Then I corresponded with a lady who has done the research, and found this is demonstrably wrong.

If you click on the following link you will get detailed information on what is known about John Patton of Timber Ridge. I just uploaded this file. It points out many errors in the older studies.
http://www.gencircles.com/users/dvagricola/3/data/2

I wish also to point out that, inconsistent with what you show on your SW Virginians website, on GENCIRCLES you show James Patton (1750/52- 1817 Ky) as a son of the same John Patton mentioned above. This is also incorrect. There were THREE men named James Patton who were almost exact contemporaries living in Augusta County in the same time period!

If you would please take a moment to click on the following link you will be able to see a detailed explanation as to the true facts regarding James Patton’s parentage. I spent a number of years establishing these facts.

http://www.gencircles.com/users/dvagricola/2/data/247

Since you have gone to the trouble of uploading so many Patton relatives it seems reasonable that you will want to get the information correct. I would sincerely enjoy hearing any comments you may have on the information that I have posted.

This is a wonderful site. I have found one mistake. You list 40. William Godbey (1002) (son of Benjamin and Nancy Elkins) as being born in 1839. William, my great grandfather was born on 08 Nov 1833. I think your error arose because the 1850 Logan County census, which you reference, is not clear on William's age. It looked to you as if his age was 11; but actually it was 16. If you look at other numbers that the census taker wrote I think you will see that it is a 16, not an 11.

Does anyone have the children of Hugh Patton and Eliza Hanna of Washington County, Pennsylvania (late 1700’s)? I have documents of my ancestor Martha Patton as the youngest daughter of above, however, her birth-date is listed as August 11, 1794. She married George Aiken in 1816 and eventually lived in Tuscawaras County, Ohio. (Other Pattons were married to Aikens (Mary, Martha and Nathan))
According to all records in the inter-net, Hugh Patton (son of Henry Patton and Sarah Lynn) was born in Ireland in 1710 and married to Eliza Hanna about 1735. They migrated to Washington County, Pennsylvania. Am I missing a generation? Eliza would have at least been in her eighties by 1794!
I have Hugh Patton listed in the Washington County census of 1790 with 1 free male over 16, 3 free males 16 and under, and 5 free females.
I can do the research since I live here in Washington County, but I need someone to point me in the right direction.

I have a William Godbey b.1781 in VA and d.1876 in Casey county, Kentucky. He would have been the great grandson of the (917) Godbey. Please contact me, I would love to exchange information. Thanks for the great work. I connect to the Burk family in Virginia through William Brookshire III. The unknown Burk female that William Brookshire married was named Maryann Burke. (Source: Bible of William Brookshire III). William was a Rev. War soldier, a Pvt. in the Company of Capt. Israel Cox, Col. Matthew Lock's Regiment. There were four other subsequent enlistments through March 1781. William and Maryann had 13 children.

I am researching the Hanks (my husband's side of family). The information that I have, started with Thomas Hanks b.1630 and married Elizabeth ? Then it goes all the way to Edward Hanks b. Nov. 7, 1822 he married (1) Eliza Payne then (2) Rebecca Eugena Hartzog.
I noticed the two daughter you have for Edward is Amanda and Julia. I do not have them, but I do have a daughter Mary Jane (they called her Polly or Jennie). Do you know anything about her? She married William Fender Jennings. Thank you for putting your research on the internet, it has helped me a great deal. Dianne

I am wondering if your Pratts may have had earlier connections to Bedford County, Virginia? I descend from John Pratt who died 1795 in Bedford county, through his daughter Mary who married Drury FOSTER 1786. They went into Warren County, KY by 1810, so I've no idea where they were in 1790 and 1800. In Kentucky they were listed as "Forster" rather than "Foster". Drury's daughter Lucy married Thomas Grisham in 1810 and they were in Allen County, KY in 1820 and moved to Giles County,TN about 1835.
Also, I descend from George Howell and Mary "Polly" Osborne who were in Montgomery, Wythe, and then Grayson Counties. I believe all these Howell's are kin, but just cannot figure out who George's father James Howell of Grayson County belongs to! George Howell was born 1750 to 1760, possibly in Pennsylvania or Maryland. We're not sure as yet. George had land on Turkey Fork of Elk Creek via a treasury warrant in 1782. A widow Sarah Howell also obtained a treasury warrant for land on Elk Creek at about the same time. We've no idea who she was. Hope you can help us figure these Howells out!
Thanks,
Will

Now maybe I can unscramble my Keister line.
My grandmother was Drucilla Ellen Keister Goodwin
her father William Jackson Keister m. E. Olivia Custard
Williams father David Allen Keister m. Elizabeth Olinger

From David back I have a mess and am trying to straighten up.

I live in west Roanoke County and with my uncle the late Harry Goodwin I was taken all over Montgomery County many years ago.

The Keisters of Montgomery County use to have a family reunion in July or August. Does anyone know if they still do?

Sandy

I really enjoyed your website on the Keister line . I even learned a few things . My great grandparents were Mary Luemma Keister and Theodore James Linton . I never was sure if her name was Marylou Emma or Mary Luemma . My mom did say that my greatgranddad called her Em and she called Dore . I noticed that you added social security information in your notes . I also try to add the social security numbers whenever I can .

I really enjoyed your web page. It is one of the few I have found with so much information on the Duncan family. My great, great grandfather was Beauford Duncan. I have also found his name spelled Bluford in my Great Aunt's family bible. From Beauford, my line runs from his son George Taylor Duncan. My web page www.geocities.com/jddunc_2000/index/ has some info on the Duncan family, but not near as nice as yours.
