Comments:	Having nothing better to do I clicked on Sykesville, of which I already knew something. What I learned was that the original Sykes there went to sell cloth from Yorkshire. The top area for fine cloth and for Sykes was the Colne Valley/Huddersfield area, so t here's a good chance he was born very close to where I was born. Before leaving the Sykesville website I decided to click on just one picture which was of Fun Day 2007. The top photo showed a girl\s face. I called my wife and asked he whose picture it was, saying it was not a new photo. She immediately said "That's Julia". Julia is our niece, 50 years old. The girl in the photo could be about 40 years younger. After I told her where the photo was from I said "Don't you think she has Hilary's eyes" and she agreed that that may be so. Hilary is our other niece. Are we both related to the original Sykesville Sykes? My father's side were Sykes and Fairbanks. My mothers side were Sykes and Pogson. My brother has researched the Fairbank line and discovered that one of our Fairbank ancestors went to USA and traced the line there down to G. Bush with one link missing. One of our grandchildren has Fairbank for a middle name, after his great grandfather.

Comments:	I am not an ancestor, just the proud owner of a house full of wonderful Sikes Cherry Furniture. I inherited the furniture from my parents (my sister has many pieces also) Our father (Robert W Butson) worked for the Sikes Company in the 1950's (60's?) He was a sales rep and I have a few photos of him with clients and one at a Trade Show. My parents moved 6 times during my life and were often told "don't call us (the movers) again, this stuff is too heavy!" My cherry hutch was always the killer! Anyway, I just thought I would contact you and let you know that I LOVE my furniture and it will stay in our family always. (My sister does too!) You are welcome to contact me anytime!!

Comments:	I believe that Harvey Moore Sykes was born May 17, 1874 and was one of 7 (?) children of James Sykes and Elizabeth Poole. From about 1900 to 1917(?) he lived in Janesville, Wisconsin. In 1911 he and his partner Leslie Davies owned the Sykes & Davies Auto Garage at 17 - 19 S. Main Street in Janesville. In 1912 he married Mellita Olga Valeska Czipkus and on 7 February 1915 my mother Marion Elizabeth Sykes was born in Janesville, Wisconsin. At some point, they moved to Milwaukee and then to Toledo, Ohio. I know nothing about the time frame for these moves or when Harvey left my Grandmother and/or passed away. Mellitta passed away in Toledo in the early 1960's. I would appreciate hearing from anyone that is associated with this branch of the Sykes lineage.

Comments:	very interesting stuff. I cant seem to find any iformation attached to my grand fathers name. My dad is living. Ronald Edward Sikes. His siblings from two families. born to Dorothy Prastor Sikes(Andrews), Dorothy June, Gladys, Sylvia, Cynthia..there are two more I cannot recall. His second family from Guy's second know marriage to Nelly who's last married name was Brookover; Roger Sikes, Orville Sikes, Donald Roy Sikes(deceased)aorund 1965 in Cuyama Valley, Emily Sikes(deceased). One of my dads uncles was Bert Praster of Cayucas Ca. and Ira Fuller of Morrow Bay Ca. These uncles are both deceased. There is one uncle I had never met who had been living in Riverside,Ca. until his death. My Grandmother Dorothy had always told tales of this uncle sitting in a wheel chair with his "Colt" pistol hanging there and talking of the days of the range wars in the new mexico territory. Hope this information is usefull in future of current searches. Thanks much.

Comments:	Hello~ I seem to be hitting a confusing area with my Jessie Sykes. There are 2 families in the same area of Liberty, Calloway, KY at the same time...both with male Jessie's of about the same age.......looking at the 1880 Census. One with father listed as Jas. B. Sykes (who on the 1900 census is listed as J.B. and on the 1910 census it is hard to decipher, but almost looks like Josie in the household of his son Guy)...and the other is Arthur Sikes. My male Jessie lists his parents as both born in KY.....which I realize they mix those up quite often not being aware of where their parents were really born. The two fathers are born in TN, with one mother born in TN and the other in KY. Right now, I'm trying to follow both Jessie's to see if one fits better, but it's still a little misleading. The Jessie Sykes that was married to my ggrandmother, Rosa Alexander b. 1884 in Murray, KY....possibly died around 1908 or before, as Rosa is remarried to a Byers in 1910m listed as married 2 years, and now living in Mississippi Co., ARK. Jessie and Rosa were on the 1900 Census, living in Henry, TN, married 2 years. They had 2 children, John Taylor b. Aug 1899 and Lillie May b. April 1902. Beginning in the second marriage, 1910 census, the children are listed as SIKES, instead of SYKES as on the 1900. So, I just continue my quest. And I'm very interested in the DNA Project, as my brother is willing to participate. Thanks, Patty

Comments:	Hi, I wish I had found this site one day earlier! I had decided after looking at another site to order a fairly extensive DNA kit from Family Tree DNA. It's not the ultra expensive one, but it does run nearly 500, and will give a Fairly good picture of Ancestry. My Grandmother was born and raised in North Carolina. Her Grandmother was a woman named Eva Caroline Sikes and married a man named Charles Mangum who according to my grandmother was a first generation American from Ireland. I can't find any record of him before the Marriage. She, on the other hand, was a daughter of John Brown Sikes, who fought in the Civil War for the Confederacy of course, with his two brothers. There is a rather remarkable story of the three of them on a battlefield, but I won't get into that here. There is a copy of a Sikes/Sykes genealogy book in my family that traces our Sikes lineage back to the first immigrant to Virginia in 1642. His name was Jon Sykes. I am trying to get a copy of this book this month. I believe it is in the posession of one of my cousins. The book is a fantastic record of many of the southern Sikes. It's fascinating to track them from the 1600's to the mid-20th century. I have ancestors in this line who fought proudly in the Revolution as well as the Civil War. I listed Sykes as a surname when I ordered my DNA kit. I would like to ensure that my DNA data is included in the study. In addition, I have looked at the UK website www.spatial-literacy.org. I love it, because I can track British surnames by county and region. It definitely seems to be a Yorkshire name, although other websites have mentioned it originating further north in Cumberland. I just thought I would make a contribution. I don't know if my DNA will go straight into your database just because I listed that surname or if I have to contact someone else separately. My paternal grandmother was a Sikes, Zena Louise Sikes, born in Canastota, NY, but her family came from Suffield, CT. Her parents were Zenas Sikes (descendant of Richard Sikes' son Victory Sikes) and Alice Gertrude Skelton. I was aware of your organization from doing some research on my grandmother's family, and knew that the Sikes family was able to trace its members for many centuries. The problem I have had for many years is tracing the Conley family. Only last week I learned that my father's family is also descended from Richard Sikes, having descended from Increase, brother of Victory. The record shows a "John Conway" born to Margaret Warner, an unmarried woman from Springfield, MA. Her son always used the name "Conley" so we have assumed that name is correct. According to John Ward Conley's obituary in 1903, his mother remarried after John Conley died and had other children. Recently, a descendant of Margaret Warner contacted me to inform me that Margaret Warner married Oliver Stebbins, who was originally from Wilbraham, MA. Margaret Warner Stebbins died in Pompey, NY in 1836. Margaret Warner (1786-1836) was one of four children of John Warner, Jr. (1756-1807) and Mary Ward (1759-1799), both of Springfield. John Warner, J. was the son of John Warner and Margaret Sikes (1732-1756). This is the new Sikes connection I had not realized before and the reason I wanted to join your association. I am looking for an answer to the "Conley" connection. The Memorial History of Hartford County, Chapter XXIII, contains a history of Suffield. Page 399 indicates that there was a "Samuel Conley" who was a drummer with the Suffield soldiers at the Deerfield garrison in 1722-1723. I have found a computer reference to a "Moses Conley" who was stationed at Fort Massachusetts in 1746. Page 400 of the history of Hartford County also shows a "John Conley" of Suffield who was a fifer who accompanied Benedict Arnold on his attack of Quebec in September 1775. Apparently, John Conley was captured on December 31, 1775 and released a few months later. Another record I found indicated that a John Conley may have left Sarah Ashley of Suffield with a child in 1775. The 1790 federal census reflects a John Conley of Glastonbury, CT. who lost his home that year and moved away. A history of Vermont newspaper articles shows a 16 year old "John Conly" who was an indentured servant with David Sheldon in Dorset, Vermont, in 1792, which could mean he was the child of Sarah Ashley. David Sheldon and the John Conley who went to Quebec were in the same company in 1776. Obviously, there could be some connection between the father Conley and the son Conly. In 1816, the father John Conley and Margaret Warner moved to Madison County, NY. According to the obituary mentioned above, the father John Conley was from the Springfield area and died shortly after moving to New York. The son, John Ward Conley, my great great grandfather, settled in Canastota, NY and owned several boats and a hotel on the Erie Canal. My great grandfather and grandfather also worked on the canal, taking their boats from Buffalo to Philadelphia. I think when my grandfather saw New York City he decided to move there, which he did when he married my grandmother, Zena Sikes. They ultimately moved to New Jersey, where I have lived all my life. I am anxious to find more information with your association. The original Conley in America was Abraham Conley, who lived in Kittery, ME in 1636 or so. I have not found a son, although he apparently had another Abraham who was born in Kent County, England, just before they left England. They came with the Lord family, and I see some Lords near Suffield. There was a Conley in or near Boston in 1690, according to a will, but I am hoping to find any connections. No one seems to have done a genealogy of the Conley family. One problem is that there may have been two births to unmarried women. Another is that the name can be spelled many ways. Comments:	Frederick Ashbel Sykes lived in Agawam, Massachusetts where he was manager of a woolen mill. I have a book in which he details his work life including his days worked, salary received, recipes for dye, as well as his work as treasurer for the Baptist Church. He died in 1907. Frederick married Lucretia Maria Bodurtha (known as Kit). Unable to have children of their own, they adopted my grandmother, Susie May Seymour when she was five years old around 1878. Fred and Kit later purchased a vacation cottage at Short Beach, CT, near Branford where they spent their summers. Comments:	i dont know much about this side of my family. my father was illegitimate ( his mother was anne (above) and she gave him her last name. she had two older sisters and a brother ( katherine, ada, vance) and a younger sister named morley. according to morley, the family is from north carolina. i think most of the family was from the cape fear area, but i am certainly not sure of this. ada knew about the family but she is long gone. she mentioned something once in a note about a sykes marrying a seddon or seddons in the 1840s, and also mentioned us being related to the quick family. my father was leon, and he passed away in 1988. i have 4 children (matthew, katelyn, mary and thomas). if you are able to determine anything about our lineage, i would certainly be interested in hearing about it. i am very interested in joining the association. thank you. leon sykes
