I would like to send Herbi Hardt a note. Where can I reach him, either address or e-mail? My husband and I spent many fun-filled Saturday nights at the Old Heidelberg in Chicago, enjoying Herbi and his band. We even stopped there on our wedding night, June 3, 1950, and I have a picture of Herbi sitting with us at our table. He was such a talented and handsome entertainer. I would just like to
send him our best wishes.

I loved to read about your family's adventure, and it was interenting to know your family came from the same region (now Poland)where mine came from too. I live in Pelotas, Brasil, and I descend from Christian Bonow, born on Aug. 8,1824, he died on Aug. 29, 1900. In fact I don't know the year they came to Brasil, but I imagine it was around of 1860 or 1870. It is a pity i don't know anything before of that, maybe "my" Christian was someone of "your" Friederich too!

Recently searched for and found Lorelei Smith (nickname = "Noni") in your family history for the Ecklunds. I have a few small corrections: Gene S Smith's second daughter Michele (notice the one "L", not two) was my first wife, and I was her first husband (I have no idea who "Japeson" was). Our only child, Brandon Robertson Gates, was born in Stockton, CA, on 5-11-1970, not in 1971. Noni was murdered in Lodi by a jealous ex-boyfriend, who then shot himself dead at the scene. I cannot comment on the date of her death except to say that the year of 1973 sounds right, as Michele and I were separated then and headed for divorce, and I had yet a year to go before graduating from Cal at Berkeley (where Michele still lives, never having remarried). Of the above info I am certain; less certain is what I thought I knew of Gene's daughter Sharon (nickname = "Dee"): I was told that she was his by marriage to his first wife (I never knew her name), thus Michele and Sharon were half-sisters.

I was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, on Feb. 28, 1936, to
Edwin Louis Ziemer and Barbara Violet Gilmore(both deceased). I had an older sister, Joy Violet Ziemer (Workman) (deceased), and have a younger brother, Dennis Edward Ziemer, also born in N.O. on 11 November, 1942.
My paternal grandfather was Henry P.Ziemer(born 1884), and married Matilda Wingerter(born 1886)in New Orleans.
All the members of my family attended Trinity Evangical
Reformed Church in N.O. in my growing-up years in N.O. I
was enrolled in St. John's Lutheran Parochial School in N.O.
in my elementary years.
A few years ago, I briefly checked into the Ziemers living
in the Chicago, but found no connecting roots to my family of Ziemers. I have been able to find very, very little re-
garding my father's family background, and only know from my
own youth that my Grandfather and Grandmother Ziemer settled
in New Orleans after leaving Germany sometime before or during the First World War; I have no information from which city in Germany they immigrated. Such matters were
never discussed among any of my family, at least not in the
presence of the children.
Should you know or learn of even the slightest possibility of a connecting factor between the Chicago and New Orleans
Ziemers, I would be extremely grateful to hear about it, so that I could at least try to follow it up.
Best wishes to you and all of your family,
Ed Ziemer

Interesting site - my Ziemer ancestor was born c 1776. Her grandson immigrated from Posen Province of Prussia to America in 1866, living in Chicago about 11 years before moving west to Minnesota and homesteading.
I'm researching my ancestral families from Posen via the church records of the Schokken Evangelical (Lutheran) church in Kreis Wongrowitz of Posen Province. I found about 13 references to Ziemer in the 1822-1866 baptismal records, which also includes a large number of Kelm entries.

The oldest daughter Elizabeth Phyllis O'Connell also known as Betty was my mother. She had me in Cook County Hospital in Chicago out of wedlock and I was in St. Vincent's Orpanage for 3 days and given to foster parents. They had me for 10 years and I was finally adopted by them. Thats how the Sperandeo name. I went by O'Connell until 10 years old. I had remembered my grandmother visiting me only once. I was told she did come more often than that. Betty did marry another man and she died in 1940. I was a year old. Louise's husband Phillip died shortly afterward. In 1988 my wife and I started the family research, she was also adopted after being a foster child for 18 years. It was only recently started working on Bonow family. We will share anything we have with other family researchers.

Hello. I am the 36 year old Grandson of Elfriede Berta Maria Ziemer, Daughter of Richard Friedrich Erich Ziemer and Helene Johanna Kleist. Elfriede Ziemer died September 16, 2001 at Christ Hospital in Jersey City, New Jersey at the age of 85 of terminal cancer. She was born on September 5, 1916 in Kiel, Germany. She always mentioned that she had a cousin who immigrated to Chicago and that her Father's family originated in the lost German lands to the east. Elfriede worked for Heinkel Aircraft offices in Germany and Austria until the end of WWII After the war ended she found safe haven in Oberammergau, Germany where she remained for the next 16 years working for the U.S. Government and later N.A.T.O. as an official interpreter of German into English. She was very proud that her Daughter Karin was chosen to play a role in the 1960 Oberammergau Passion Play. In 1961 she traveled to Bremerhaven where she boarded the T.S. Bremen and sailed to America arriving at Columbus Pier in Manhattan. Elfriede went to work for Boynton Brothers & Company until her retirement in 1979. Onf February 9, 2001 Elfriede lost her sister,Lieselotte Ziemer Delfs which caused her great sadness during the final months of her life. She is survived by her family: Daughter Karin, Grandson Jack Williams, Float Chairman of the New York German-American Steuben Parade and his wife Christine of Pforzheim, Germany. Carsten, Karin & Otto Oppelt, Andrea, Petra & Olaf Boysen, Ingrid, Michael, Stefan Gerking. If anyone out there has any information as to who my Grandmother's cousin is who immigrated to Chicago, please contact me. My Grandmother informed me once that while in Chicago during the 70's on a visit, she was unsuccessful in locating her cousin. I only wish I had his name. Thanks! Jack Williams.

Any more that I have was that his father's name was William and his mother was Johanna Bonnesz.
I would love to hear from you! My aunt in Chicago says that there are "south-side" Chicago Ziemers and "north-side" Ziemers. I don't know what she means by that.
Again, thank you for your website. Utterly fascinating.

Hi, I enjoyed reading about your Chicago Ziemers. My husband's mother is a Ziemer. There is quite a large family of Minnesota Ziemers, as you probably are aware. The line starts with Frederick (1825-1889), August (1848-1924), William (1877-1949), Walter (1902-1988). Walter is my husband's grandfather. Most of the August Ziemer family stayed in southern MN, but William moved to westcentral MN. August was our immigrant. We have no known brothers of Frederick back in Germany so far. Will keep your site bookmarked. Thanks.
Name: Edwin Louis Ziemer II <edziemer@juno.com> Date: 2002-01-19 Comments:
My family of Ziemers are the descendants of Henry P. Ziemer
and Matilda (Weingartener) Ziemer, both of whom immigrated to the United States, settling in New Orleans, LA. My father Edwin Louis Ziemer and his two brothers, Arthur and
Henry, and his sister, Matilda, were all born in N.O.between
1909 and approximately 1917. My father married Barbara (Gilmore) Ziemer, who was also born in N.O. March 17, 1914.
I, Edwin Louis Ziemer, was born in N.O. February 28, 1936,
and am the second of four children born to Edwin and Barbara
Ziemer. The firstborn of their children, a little girl, died
at a very early age; my parents never spoke of or made reference to this tradgedy. Still living are my other two
siblings, Joy Violet (Ziemer) Workman, born in 1934, and my
younger brother, Dennis Edward Ziemer, born in 1942 (both in N.O.).
I have been totally unsuccessful in tracing my father's family beyond his own father (Henry P.) There was never any
discussion of extended family members on my father's side,
although I do have a fair history of my mother's family of
Gilmores. Her father was David Gilmore, dead at age 36 of
massive heart attack approximately 1920.
I tell this story to any and everyone who could be even remotely able to provide any information or leads in my search for my paternal ancestors. Thank you for allowing me to say all of this once again.
Sincerely, Ed Ziemer.

Nice web page and interesting. Seems we all share pretty much the same sort of history.
No one born in Slovenia had a middle name. Prior to about 1700 women only went by a first name, no surname. Most of the children baptized at MOG did not have a middle name. So unless you specifically see a middle name on a U.S. birth certificate, that middle name may be a confirmation name.

I am in Stuttgart, Germany for 9 months and researching my history. My grandmother's father married a Wilhelmine Albertine Ziemer, born Nov. 28, 1857 from Yarlin, Pommern, Present day Jarchlino, Poland. She was the daughter of Karl Friedrich August Ziemer a master cabinet maker and Sophie Wilhelmine Canst. I have no birthdates on either. I think they may be. I think Carl August Ferdinand might have been Karl Friedrich August's brother. Timely and place correct. Any more info would be greatly appreciated. Wilhelmine and Karl moved to Bremer Iowa.... I think it is harder to follow the women's side of the family.

Beautiful presentation! Wish I could help you and you could help me, but I have no idea where to start in Germany. The family name I am looking for is Frank and have no idea where they came from so I grab at straws. I'm sure they were poor farmers, but hard working because that is the way I remember the ones here.
