Very good site. The general consensus is that the Cawthorne family originally came from Yorkshire settling in Fenland ?? My grandmother, Ivy Cawthorne lived all her life in Yorkshire as her father Walter Cawthorne moved from Terrington St. Clements, Norfolk c1880. Walter was one of the many siblings of William Cawthorne (1835-1905) born Tilney cum Islington. Williams parents were John Cawthorne (c1792-1847), b. Norfolk,(1841 Census) who married Elizabeth Creed, Tilney St. Lawrence, 1829.
I have traced my Creed ancestors, (Brisley, Norfolk) back to the 17c, but cannot find anything on John Cawthorne's ancestors.
Have you anything that can help? I can send my tree through by e-mail if it helps.
Best Regards,
Nigel

Hi
I read with interest about the levelling of Upwell Baptist Cemetery in Norfolk. Particularly the part about the cemetery containing a WWII grave. Both my mother and sister work for the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. They helped me out by investigating what happened to the 3 war dead buried at Upwell.
I can now inform you that all casualties were exhumed and moved at the end of last year, however the records have not been updated to show this. I suspect they will be now.
Of course that doesn't make up for what was done to the final resting place of hundreds of people. I understand that there must be progress, but couldn't the stones be saved or at the very least the inscriptions transcribed so their descendants at least have something left.

I can follow my line to a William Palmer who came to America in 1621 on board the "Fortune". Can't get anything further back. However, I would love to get a direct connection to a "Palmer" from England. You should consider having your DNA checked!

Unfortunately I got lost in Norham churchyard where there are many dead Weatherston's and I haven't quite worked out the relevant members of my direct line.

I am the daughter of Queenie Kate DaSilva Parker Palmer, daughter of Mary Parker Palmer - and I do have a Cousin Delys (not sure of her married name) but I think she was the daughter of my uncle I am thinking Douglas - but my memory might be slightly off at this stage of my life. I think they lived near Hilgay. She had a daughter Delphina who married a US serviceman and went somewhere on the EAST COAST of the US many years ago. Note that in our line the spelling has been changed to Da-Silva. We have some of the photos that you have in my daughter's possession, Tracy Stevenson. Would also like to hear from you and loved this site as we had been looking for other Palmers and the history behind it. Vera Beckerton was my aunt, and they lived in King's Lynn in a hotel just up the road from where MARY PALMER who was an invalid in my youth, and died at about the age of 104. Mary Osler was my sister and she lived with Grandma Palmer until she died. Mary married a Leslie Smith of King's Lynn, but they are both dead now. Carolyn Smith was my cousin and lives in Tenarife, and her brother David was killed in a Moped accident at the age of 18.

I came across the story of Maria de Silva when my Australian Great Uncle came to see me in 1993. He had had information about her via Jean Matthews of Peterborough. Uncle Bob was Robert Ketteringham, and it was thought that he was a possible descendant of one of Maria's children. He didn't prove this, and my life has been too busy in the intervening years for me to take up the research. It was a conversation about the Peninsular Wars which made me start googling.

The Scales in Ireland seem to be descended from 4 brothers who were given land by the British in County Clare but as yet I have no dates. (am just starting to explore!) My father James Scales had 3 brothers, John, Martin and Leo, and 3 sisters, Bernadette, Mai and Nora. Mai and Nora emigrated to the US when they were teenagers (in the 1920's) and lived and died in Long Island, N.Y. John emigrated to England and died, ironically, in Yorkshire where the original 4 brothers hailed from!

I have just started researching my Irish ancestry. My dad (Walter Joseph Russell 1925 - 1996) was born in Waterford City, Ireland, and his dad, Michael Russell(died 1950) was a professional soldier in he Royal Irish Regiment (c.1890s to 1920). I can only go back a further generation to my Great grandfather called Patrick Russell who was born in Kilmacthomas, Co Waterford. You say that Russell is a common name in Ireland? This is certainly true for Ulster, but the Russells in Waterford are a bit thin on the ground! My Dad always said that if you met another Russell in Waterford, then they were probably a relative! I am also very interested in the Scots link as many Russells apparently came from Scotland to Ulster over the centuries.
I know Cambridgeshire as my son is studying History at Girton College. Best wishes. Patrick

I read with sadness the fate of your Baptist Church and can identify with it completely. I've set up a website to try and bring together others with relatives who are buried at Bwlchgwynt Baptist Chapel in Cyffig (now Eglwyscummin) a place which is a mile or two south of Whitland in Carmarthenshire.
Just this week the plans for the development of the Chapel and the Vestry have been published and some of us have submitted objections.
The removal of gravestones will have to take place if these plans go ahead and there is no indication that access for relatives to tend to the graves of their loved ones is being planned.
The Carmarthenshire County Council do allow objector(s) to speak at the planning committee stage but we realise that little or no protection is afforded our cause. The developers have bought the leasehold on the cemetery for 999 years. They will need a garden to go with the house and this will involve moving gravestones. We will just have to try or best to challenge them, this may include the discredited "topple test" but at this stage it hasn't been mentioned.
Best wishes
Keith Bowen
PS My gt gt grandparents and their daughter are buried at the Chapel.

I was born on the marshes at Iken in Suffolk and later lived at Chediston near Halesworth and Wortham Ling near Diss not far from Redgrave the source of both the Little Ouse and the Waveny. I also attended Bracondale School in Norwich.I came to Tasmania as a twelve year old in 1952, but the stories of the Fens that I heard as a boy have remained with me and now in my retirement I have time to indulge my fascination with the Fens. Many thanks for your contribution.
By the way I know of a couple of Cawthorn families here in Tasmania.

I had not been there since I was young and we used to have an annual visit to my aunt who lived in Christchurch. This visit refuelled my interest in the family history.

I justed wanted to let you know that your family website is wonderful. Eventually, I would like to put mine on the Internet and just may copy your style (not exactly, of course) ... but I do like the way you presented your own story and those of your ancestors.
Unfortunately, I cannot provide you with any information as we are not researching the same people or the same towns/villages but your gateway to the Wisbech Museum was very helpful for me; a kind of "one-stop-shopping" place I can write for copies of registrations and transcripts.
The families I am researching, there are many but primarily are Holdgate and Hubbard, lived in and around the Wisbech area for many generations, e.g. West Walton, Walpole St. Andrew, Walpole St. Peter, Terrington St. Clement, Terrington St. John and others.
So thank you for a enjoyable trip down your memory lane ... as I already said, it was wonderful (and will be bookmarked).
Best wishes,
Heather Holdgate

Thank you for posting the news of the Baptist Chapel (now it's 2007 and is not news) but as I no longer live in Upwell and have lost touch with the place, it is news to me. I was very sorry and then angry to see what had occured. In relation to the smashing of tombstones, I am not sure that this is a lawful act and am surprised that they have been able to get away with this.
I knew many people who lived in Christchurh from the 1900's when I was a small child, most notably the surname of Cowlan, and my uncle used to be a landlord at the Dun Cow pub.
I hope you build an excellent family tree.

The Plunk's website covers the family mostly of my mother's family, who were "Plunk"..I don't have a lot from the "Scott" family history, however some of them are listed on my family website listed above. I am starting or trying to find some decendants of W.W. Scott (his wife's name was Susie). I can only find information as far back as my great grandfather. (W.W. and Susie). Was wondering if there are anyone who is viewing this guestbook, would have any information to share about them with me?
I enjoyed looking through your guest book. Very nice and interesting.
Thanks,

My gt grandfather's orignally came from around Upwell and the surrounding district. I found the picture of this grave yard most upsetting, to think that people bought these graves when they could probably ill afford to do so. They should have been protected in some way.
Is there any chance of finding out specific names of who was buried there.
Any thanks for your site it was very interesting.

There does not appear to be any lisitngs for the 'SHIPWRIGHT ARMS' Crabb Marsh - Wisbech. Now known as The Four Jacks. It was apparently run bu Mrs Ely (found from your quest book) in 1845. I know that Joseph and Eliza Parren run a couple of the Inns. In 1861 they were running the 'BEDFORD ARMS' at 6 Bedford Street , Wisbech. In 1871 they were then running the 'SHIPWRIGHT ARMS' and an Edward RABEY was a Brewers labourer living with them aged 45 in 1871. Eliza Parren (nee Staines)died but Joseph Parren and his second wife Letitia (Lettice) Rutledge were still running the 'SHIPWRIGHT ARMS' at the time of the 1881 census. 1891 Census still sees Joseph and Letitia Parren running the 'SHIPWRIGHT ARMS'. Joseph was aged 64 and said to be a Beer Retailer. After Joseph died Lettice (Letitia nee Rutledge) Parren continues to run thr 'SHIPWRIGHT ARMS' with the help of her sister Alice Rutledge who helps in the bar according to the 1901 census records. Their elderly 89 year old mother Sarah Rutledge is living with them also.
Names connected to the family are LEE - PARREN - RUTLEDGE Rutlidge - BUCK - SELLICK ...... I would love to find out more information on any of these families.

I'm a relatively recent & somewhat reluctant recruit to this IT age. Being of the retired persuasion, I have an as yet unfulfilled ambition to follow in the footsteps of Shires Publications to produce a book on 'Historic Inns & Taverns in Huntingdonshire,' for which I have done some research. I suppose I really should get on with it before they all become Asian restaurants!

Fascinating stuff!
I'm having a similar problem filling gaps for a great-aunt who emigrated c1910. At least I was able to discover where she finished her days in Montreal, and where she was employed, but I would love to find her on a passenger list or in the 1911 Census, hopefully somewhere in Canada. Sadly, two attempts proved unsuccessful in locating her 1940 Questionnaire in the Canadian Archives, which would have given details of entry as well as personal information.
Happy hunting!

enjoyed your family "report" immensely!
I am descended from Scot-Irish on my Mothers side she being a SCOTT and Scot-Welsh on my Fathers side (w'a wee bit o'Dutch)he being a REED.
I've only been at this 'geane' bit since 2002 so I am quite a "newbie".
Isn't it an exciting adventure?!!
I've gotten my SCOTT line back to a George SCOTT in Suffolk England y.1542 where I am at a standstill at this time.
My REED line back to 1764 in Pennsylvania USA. The REED line is pretty well 'hidden' and difficult to trace, but that must be the fun of it all!!
Well I'm sure that I've "bent" your ear long enough.
Bye-Bye for now and keep up the good work.----BILL

I am sure somehow my Berrys and yours are probably related - just haven't made a connection as yet. I have gone back to Samuel Berry who was born about 1760 (not sure where), married Elizabeth Tombleson in 1785 in Upwell. There is a Samuel Berry who died in Upwell in 1826 who is no doubt the same one, as he lived with Elizabeth and had three children in Upwell: Thomas Tombleson Berry, Joseph Tombleson Berry and Samuel Berry. Young Samuel Berry who was born 1791 is related to Stu Berry who I believe you have been in contact with and who resides here in Victoria.
I am still trying to determine where the Samuel Berry senior was born. In records I have come across, there seems to be a connection to a John Berry and a William Berry. John Berry was a witness for the marriage of Samuel to Elizabeth in 1785. Could this John Berry be your relative????

He served at Division/Ship : Dinosaur ; Quebec , and COPRA. He was later awarded the Burma Star , the Italy Star , and the France V.G. Star. These are not mentioned in his R.M. certificate of service , but on his RAF c.o.s.( but he didn't join the RAF until 1948 - after these campaigns had ended. I wonder if this might be because Copra was used by Special Forces? I'd welcome advice/suggestions, and will help in any way I can.

Dear Ann
I am trying to locate living descendents of the Late Colonel Philip Meadows Taylor.
Philip Meadows Taylor [(b. 25 September, 1808) (d. 13 May, 1876)]married Mary Palmer, daughter of William Palmer (Senior)in 1832. William Palmer served the East India Co.; was stationed in Poona.
Some detail on Taylor:
Philip Meadows Taylor: born at Liverpool (Slater Street; family later moved to Brookfield and Rodney Street); died at Mentone (Southern France?)
Taylor writes in his autobiography, “The Story of My Life” (HumphreyMilford, Oxford University Press, 1920):
… My father, Mr. Philip Meadows Taylor, was the only surviving son of the Rev. Philip Taylor, of Old Court, Harold’s Cross, in the county of Dublin. My mother was the youngest daughter of Bertram Mitford, Esq., of Mitford Castle, in the county of Northumberland, one of the most ancient Saxon families of England …
My father’s ancestors were of a North Lancashire family, and have been traced to Lancaster, where they were known in the fifteenth century…
The 1920 edition of the above book (publisher: Humphrey Milford, Oxford University Press) has a Conclusion written by Meadows Taylor’s daughter, Alice M. Taylor.
The address of Alice Taylor is Hunmanby Vicarage. Date: 15 September 1877.
Page 13-14 of the same edition have family/ancestral information in quite some detail: … Rev. Robert Mitford Taylor (RMT), Meadows Taylor’s brother was vicar of Hunmanby for 40 years during early-late 19th century. RMT’s only son, Rev. Robert Taylor could also be vicar of Hunmanby. At around 1877 Rev. Edward Mitford was living in Hunmanby Vicarage.
Online information at: http://15.1911encyclopedia.org/T/TA/TAYLOR_PHILIP_MEADOWS.htm
or at http://1911encyclopedia.org/index.htm
-------------
While I am trying to find Taylor's descendents through the Mitford link of Hunmanby, Yorkshire, can you please advise if you have any information on the same through the Palmer lineage? Any further referral possible?
Kind regards
Supratik

Hi Ann - not a direct link to myself, but my husband's Grandmother Alice Rumbelow's first marriage was to a Frederick George Scott possibly from Newmarket, but he could have moved there as I believe he worked on the railways. They married in 1903, and she had married my husbands grandfather by 1911. She was born in 1811 at Clayway Drove Ely. They had 3 sons George born around 1905 - Arthur Reginald born Oct-1906 Enfield, Middlesex, and Cecil Claude born Sep-1909 Edmonton, Middx. Believe they married in 1903 at Edmonton, Middx. Alice moved back to Ely after his death.
Do they link into yours at all?
Regards
Kay

I followed your link after the posting regarding lowlifes pilfering from web sites. Even though I have absolutely no link to your family, I have thoroughly enjoyed wandering about learning about the CAWTHORN lot! You have done a wonderful job and the website is so clear and well designed. It is truly a credit to you! Hope you don't mind if I pop back to see further developments!
Cheers,
Sonja
