Greetings! I am a fourth great granddaughter of Mary Zepherine Sebastienne Javain de Poincy, who married Jean Constantine de Generes de Marsolin, after they came from St. Domingue to Maryland in 1790 as children. I am trying to trace her de Poincy ascendancy to the family that included Philippe de Longvilliers de Poincy and clear up her relationship to Rose Josephine de la Pagerie of Martinique. We have nineteenth century letters that imply the relationship and have always been told this in family discussions. Perhaps your website will answer my question. Thank you in advance.

I loved both Joan and Gloria and their acting. Joan was a big hit to us in TOPPER RETURNS and Gloria was the ever funny wife of Jim Gillis, neighbors of Chester A Riley on the Life of Riley. As a youngster I fell in love with these comedians and watched many of their programs. I now own almost half of the Life of Riley programs and would love to know where I can obtain the other 110 episodes? Anyone know? If so, please contact me at our ministry, A Christian Pastor 2 U and at our website; http://www.spiritofprophecy.org in Las Vegas, Nevada.

I live in Irleand and my grandfather was Ernest Victor Galoché, he was son of Ernest Francois Galoché who was married to Marie Victorine Couesnon. I came across Blondell while I was researching my French ancestors on my Mothers side. She came from France in 1939.

Hi, I am Dale O'Bear and we may have some connection in the Orr surname. I have a James Orr that was born 31 December 1772 in Emery, Virginia, Washington County. He died 25 Sep 1842 in the same town and county. I have him married to a Mary Carson. I have Mary as being born 17 Dec 1774 and dieing in Emery, Virginia on 20 Aug 1840.
I only have one son for this couple and have him listed as James Orr. The son James I have as being born 07 May 1814. I have this son as being born in Emery, Virginia and he died in Smyth, Virginia in 1881. If your James Orr married to a Carson, and mine, also married to a Carson, are the same James Orr, then we do have a connection. I would appreciate any information you care to share on the matter.

Thank you for your consideration.

This weekend I came across my mother's junior high yearbook in Hollywood. Gloria Blondell was one of Mom's friends and sure enough there the two of them were in the yearbook. Gloria had signed her picture. Mom's maiden name was Jane S. Jacobson. She always spoke fondly of her schoolday's friendship with Gloria. This included one stayover at the Blondell's house where she and Gloria had a watermelon seed spitting contest from a bedroom window. The next morning they both learned that Mr. and Mrs. Blondell nearly slid off of the seed covered sidewalk. My Mom passed away this past Wednesday, July 7, 2010. I will be watching my step on the sidewalk each morning now.

I'm suprised and proud of how far reaching our name is (I was born and live in New Zealand), I wasn't aware that the variations such as Blondell and Blundell originated from Blondel before today, I always thought they were their own line. This site is truely informative and invaluble. Thanks.

Hello, I'm trying to track down the Young line in my father-in-law's Parrott line. We know for certain that our Samuel Watts Parrott married Mary Young in 1822 in Berkeley Co., WV. I am trying to determine this Mary Young's parents. Another kind soul in KY is helping me and her research showed that Mary Young's father MAY be Adam Young. This person then listed names in Adam Young's will, including that of Caroline Young who married John Blondel 1839. So I decided to search Rootsweb and found your site. What really JUMPED out at me was your mention of JOHN OLINGER BLONDEL. My father-in-law's ancestors always said they didn't know much about Mary Young's parents but thought her mother's name was OLINGER. Maybe I'm on the right track. When I tried to click on JOHN OLINGER BLONDEL, rootsweb said the material had been removed. Can you help me get to this information? I think Caroline Blondel may be Mary Young Parrott's sister. Sincerely, Connie Parrott

Ref. Aaron Blondel's input some time back, Richard wasn't rescued from a burning castle, rather he was imprisoned in the castle at Trifels, West Germany, and Minstrel Blondel discovered him there, went back to England and raised ransome money to set him free. Fat lot of good that was; Richard the Lionheart shortly afterward was hit in the neck by an arrow fired from a castle he was besieging, and died of septicaemia. My own early entry about my Mum and Dad being buried in Guernsey in St. Peters graveyard was in error: they are buried at the church of St. Andrews, where one can find the Blondel family tomb dating back a few centuries, the tomb being marked with the Blondel family crest.

I have a bit more on the Blondel crest I mentioned: It apparently dates back to the 15th Century in Guernsey, C.I., and is described thus: Shield - Argent; Chevron -Gules; 3 Eagles displayed - Sable. According to my source, L.S. Blundell in the U.S.A., the first Blondel she could trace in Guernsey was from St. Saviour's, a Guillaume Blondel, 1392-1405. Earlier, of course, there was Blondel the Minstrel, who allegedly (Winston Churchill calls this a "Pretty Story") sang his way around European castles in the 14th century, seeking King Richard the Lionheart. Apparently the imprisoned King responded to Blondel's first verse with a second verse of the song. Blondel then quickly returned to England and raised a ransome to free the king. I love this story, and tell it often.

Correction on my last: a "Broad" chevron. This coat of arms is on Blondel family tomb I mentioned. The tomb is in poor state, with lichens and mould eating away the lettering. Needs a scrub-down. Any Guernsey volunteers? If not I'll borrow a bucket and scrub-brush when I visit my birthplace June 23 -29 2008.

Just looked at the coats of arms and the one I've got isn't there. In layman's terms it it is a shield topped by a helmet, itself topped by a bearded saracen's head. On the white shield a brad inverted chevron, tworaptor birds either side and one raptor bird below the V. Motto, "Le bon temps viendra." (Good times are a'comin?)

Great website and story. I never did any research on the Blondell name other than asking my parents about our heritage. From what I understood as a child, my immediate ancestors (back about four generations) were Dutch farmers. I'm glad to finally see where the name actually originated. Thank you for putting all of this information together!

I am the great granson of Theadore Alexander Blondell b. 1825. My father was Ross Blondell b. 1895, Coeburn, VA d. 1965, Hazard, KY. My grandfather was Ezra "Ed" Blondell who was a peaceofficer in Virginia and was killed by a prisoner before my father was born. My grandmother was Dora M. Yeary Blondell. My father, as a small child, went to live with F. W. Blondell and his family in Canada until he became an adult. I remember F. W.'s daughter Molly Blondell McGinnis (aunt Molly), who used to visit us on her trips in the 1950s-60s, back and fourth from, Virginia to Canada and Oregon. I believe that she must have lived with her daughter, Helen in Agnes, Oregon when she died. I was born in Hazard, KY in 1951 and have resided in Louisville, KY. since 1967.

I would like to know if anyone knows where my grandfather was buried. I didn't see any pictures of his gravemarker in the Dixon Street photos in Appalachia, Va.

My grandmother Dora Yeary Blondell remarried (D. R. Shepherd) and is buried in the Riverside Cemetery in Hazard, KY.

This is confusing, I have recently had some success at tracking my far past family tree. My grandfather Eugene Sherrill, b. 1891 is a direct decendent of perhaps, probably? Christopher Hoomes b. Around 1700 and married to Margaret Sherrill. William Sherrill kept his mothers maden name. I have read an account that he was raised from infancy by Christopher Hoomes. Most records that I have read list him(Christopher) as father of William.
I don't know how you are related to Hoomes and I surely would not be rude. But any information that you might have as to my genetic heritage is welcome. I found enough information that I wondered if I could find which Hoomes I might be related to. My brothers and sister are not yet aware of this. It is odd to question who you might be. In name and mind Sherrill. In paternal linage a Hoomes?
Why would he keep the name Sherrill.

My grandmother was Evelyn Payne who married Nelson O'Neal both Nelson and Evelyn were born in 1888. I am trying to determine if Joseph Payne's mother was a Blondel from around the early 1800's perhaps a daughter of John Henry Blondel b.1800. Any help would be much appreciated.

Hi! I was surfing the net to find out about la Baie De Caracol and saw your site. I lived where your relatives had a plantation from 1950 to 1964. My Grandfather (Porter Kenneth Crooks) started a Sisal plantation there in the 1920's. I had a cannon in the yard we salvaged off what we thought was a Spanish Galion. We also had large cauldrins as flower pots that had been used by your relations in the processing of sugar. There were even some roads & ruins of your family buildings and plantation. Also there were a lot of Indian artifacts. It was a fantastic place to grow up.

Their daughter Ann (1740-1810), married Henry Broadnax, born 1736 and they had a daughter, Elizabeth Power Broadnax, born in Caroline Co., VA on March 3, 1765, and died in Caroline Co., VA on July 11, 1838. Elizabeth married John George Wookfolk, another prominent family from Caroline Co., VA. They had seven children and one was my great great grandmother, Sophia Frances Woolfolk, who married John Muse Burke.

First off I want to commend you on a wonderful site.

My family are all from Wise County, VA. The Norton, Appalachia, Big Stone Gap VA., areas.

I have been researching my connection to Sarah Katie Countiss Jenkins, Norton, VA.

Sarah was originally married to the son of the first Mayor of Norton, Richard Jenkins, s/o William Jenkin ans Eugenia Smithers Jenkins. Richard past and she remarried a nephew of William's from Wales. Albert Jenkins of Norton.

Sarah owner her own resturant in Norton called Katie's Kitchen of which I have pictures of. I also have pictures of Katie and Albert.

I'm also searching my connection to the Blondell family through Georgia Kilbourne who married Arthur Vance, son of Andrew Jackson Vance and Mollie (Roberts) Vance. Georgia Kilbourne's brother was French Kilbourne whom I'm told married a Blondell....

If anyone has any information concerning the above, I would appreciate hearing from you...Thank You and Thank You for a wonderful site...I'm truly impressed...Nancy "Vance" Glover

My Father is M.L. Stallard Vance I born Appalachia, VA 6-4-1922

We are looking for a Catalina Benguet Vincennes who arrived in Martinique around 1800 and we think she might have been a cousin of Josephine de la Pagerie. Miss Benguet later emigrated to Cuba and had children with Louis Arrue. Do you have any suggestions as to where can we get some information? Thank you.

When Dick Powell was living, my Aunt's would visit him in the Los Angeles area. They always professed to be cousin's of his. Since our many great grandmother was Sarah Jane Powell and came from Arkansas, I believed it. My Powell/Blackwell/Campbell ancestors lived around Franklin County, Arkansas. Is there any chance that the Blondell website would have the genealogy of Dick Powell. Did he have a daughter by Joan? I always enjoyed Joan on the screen and also Dick. My Aunt's were Dessie, Virgie and Pearl Campbell before they married.

I was surfing around geneaology sites and found yours. My grandmother was Willie Mae Southwell Austin. Her mother was Emma Hoomes Southwell. They are both buried in the Andalusia{AL} Memorial Cemetery ,along with Emma's other children. I grew up (in Huntsville,AL) hearing from my South Alabama relatives about the Hoomes family of Virginia, the horse racing and the loss of the family fortune. I visited Hoomesville several years ago and explored the church and the cemetery.(My husband is from Andalusia and we make frequent trips to S. AL although we now live in Knoxville,TN.) I am considering taking a 'road trip' before the summer is over to explore Bowling Green,VA. I am always grateful to the people like you and Jake Holmes who have done all the legwork exploring the family.

I found your website looking for my Kilbourn relatives. You've done a great job with your site.

My gg-grandmother was Rhoda H. Kilbourn from Appalachia. I had heard that her family had owned quite a bit of land in Appalachia. I've found a record that she had sold some property back in 1908. I'm not sure of who her parents are but it looks like she might descend down from Joesph and Elizabeth Kilbourn. I believe she might have had a brother named George. My g-aunts have also mentioned that there was a cousin named Opal.
Rhoda married my gg-grandfather Bige Lewis. Possibly over in Letcher Co. Ky. There are other Kilbourn's there as well as in Leslie Co. Ky. I do know that Rhoda and Bige had at one time lived in Cutshin, Ky. He was shot and killed in Appalachia around 1890 and left her a widow with children. My g-grandfather being one of them was named John D. Lewis. His sisters names were Rebecca and Elizabeth. I think there may have been another sibling, too.
Rhoda is supposed to be buried in the "Kilbourn" family cemetary on Kilbourn Ave. that was named after them. I didn't see her name listed on your site for the Kilbourn cemetery although I did see a lot of entries that mentioned there were graves that were unreadable.
The Wise County Deed Book lists her being named Roda Collins (nee Roda Kilbourn)and her husband George Collins. I noticed on the Kilbourn cemetery site that there was a Roberta Collins listed. Although I don't believe that she is Rhoda's daughter, she might be related to George.
Wise Co. 1870 census lists Joseph and Elizabeth Kilbourn with a George and Helen as children. The "H" for the middle initial could very well stand for Helen. If anyone has any information on this family I would love to hear from them.
Thank You,
Tammy Asbjornsen

Hello Blondels! Here's an old family story for you...my grandmother told me that we are direct descendants of Blondel, but never told me how. What she went on to say was that when Blondel found Richard, Richard praised his bravery and COMMENDED HIM WITH A SHEEPSKIN...upon which was written how thankful Richard was for Blondel's courage. I was told that this sheepskin was passed down through the generations and that there were/are actually photos of it! Has anyone ever heard of such a thing???? Is this possible? My mind is wondering....NEED FEEDBACK!!!! THANKS

My maiden name is Kilbourne. My grandparents were Samuel and Lula Kilbourne that lived on Dixon. My Uncle is Philip Ralph Kilbourne and he lives in Big Stone Gap. He is working on the Kilbourne geneology.

Do any of you know about the history of the Kilbourne's and Blondell's? I thought there was a story behind it but am not sure.

Take Care and write me sometime if you get a chance. I live in Ringgold, Georgia. It is about 20 minutes from Chattanooga, TN. I come to visit my uncle and his family at least once a year. Maybe we could meet sometime.

To whom it may concern,

I am researching my family and it is interesting to note that this website is one of the best I have come across when researching my family name.

My last name could be connected to the author however I am having difficulty. My last name is Blondell, but my family settled in Michigan. The area inwhich they settled was in and around Brown City, Flint, Saginaw and Cass City, Michigan. I am not sure when my ancestors settled in the region. I don't know if my name originated from Blondeel, Blondel, Blundell or Blundel. It has been difficult trying to locate my great grandparents and so on.

Maybe you can assist me.

A very interesting and well put together site. I was interested to see the poem/song written by Blondel de Nesle, "Ma joie me semont", on this website as I have an interest in Blondel's legendary involvement with Richard the Lionheart. Does anyone know which song Blondel is supposed to have written with Richard that he then sung at castles throughout Germany in an attempt to locate his friend and King? Was it "Ma joie me semont" or another?

Dear Ms. Thomas

My name is Robert Joseph Helferstay I now live in Las Vegas and I am from St. Louis Mo. I haven’t been back in years. I had a great grandmother named Ida J Zieger Helferstay, I had an aunt named Virginia Hazel Helferstay, I believe her married name was Davis, her father’s name, my grandfather, was Robert Richard Helferstay, my father was Robert Richard Lee Helferstay, he had 11 brothers and sisters. I think John Henry Helferstay was my gg grandfather, I’m not sure. I have traced the tree back to Virginia, Maryland. I can tell you about some of the people I remember as a child. The Ida Helferstay I remember lived with her son Charles Helferstay, and his wife Ella, Charles was my grandfather’s brother. The two brothers married sisters Mary and Ella. Charles lived on 9th Street (I think) in north St. Louis, Robert and his family lived around the corner on Chambers Street. If you thinks its the same family contact me and I’ll give you what information I have, which may not be very much.

Bob Helferstay.

Hi there. Very interested in your family. I had written an MA
dissertation on Mederico (Mery) Blondel des Croisettes, military architect and engineer (1628-1695). Mery was Resident Engineer to the Knights of Malta (1659-1695), died and is buried in Malta. I have a colleague who is very interested in Mery's famous brother Nicolas-Francois (1618-1686). I would appreciate it if you could help us to acquire portraits of these two. I live in England with my husband and am planning a trip back to my country of origin, Malta. I would like to do a presentation based on my MA dissertation and would like to show Mery (Mederico) to Maltese academics and architects - he is really popular back there.

Thanks!

Hello,

First of all I want you to know that your site is simply wonderful.

My family is from Wise County, Appalachia and Big Stone Gap.

My maiden name is Vance and my Uncle Howard has spoke of Mrs. R. C. Bray. My Great Grandmother was Ida Belle "Salyer" Jenkins and husband was George Jenkins.

Ida Belle was Martha Frazier Beverly's cousin.

I came to this site looking for a Sarah Katherine Katie Countiss Jenkins who married my Great Grandfathers brother Richard Jenkins of Wales.

Should anyone have any information regarding anyone I have mentioned, Please contact my at nglover6@aol.com

Thank You,

Nancy

I'm looking up information on the Blondell's for my daughter, Danielle Blondell. Your page has been very helpful. Freeman White Blondell is my daughter's great, great Grandfather. She lives in Oregon with all the Blondell's there. Thanks so much for the help.

I absolutely adore Joan. Who wouldn't with her wide eyes and alluring smile. Incedently I truely think that my wife Lynda looks like her in many ways. Ms Blondell's films are
an absolute treasure. I wish American Movie Classics would show more of them.

Hi family! I love the website. My friend Deb Clarkston just forwarded it to me and I haven't had a chance to look at everything yet. Mary Blondell was my great grandmother. Lawrence T. Wells was my grandfather, and Jeri Wells Miller was my mother. I'm so excited to see pictures. I don't suppose you are selling copies? Please add me to any list that you update information on. Thanks and I'll be back. Stephanie

I went across your site surfing on the net. I wandered who was this lady with the same name as mine. I am swiss. My ancestors became swiss in 1604. Apparently, they came from Rouen (Normandy), France. They left France, because they were protestant.
Yours.

This is a very good web site. I like the photo.

You look just like your dad. I haven't seen you since you were very young. I was hoping you would be at your grandmother's funeral so we could talk about genealogy.

Your cuz,

Jo Anne
