Wonderful site on the Woolsey family and it helped me find a connection with John Leander Woolsey and Louisa Jane Lancaster. They married in 1855 in Iowa.
Thank you for your diligent research and willingness to share it with everyone.

My husband is related to the Woolseys in Arkansas. We live in Bentonville Ar. So I was super excited to find your site. Albert Woolsey is his great great grandfather. I'm confused on who his father is. We are members of the church and I'm curious how it ties to Salt Lake migration. Also there is a home here that is still standing that was Henry Woolsey and J Alvin Dicksons nursery business. Thank you for so much information. It has been so interesting having graves and all local.

Hello,there!
I appreciate all that you have done to connect us with our Woolsey ancestors. I have sent e.mails to Wilford Whitaker starting in June, but Comcast has fouled our internet service and telephone up (the joys of changing carriers sigh). I am not sure he has received our answers to his e-mails. We will send something by "snail mail" soon. Wonderful stories and sources of information. Thanks again!

I have read your Woolsey stories with great interest and appreciation. Thank you for making your inspired work
available. It is a blessing to all the Woolsey descendants.
My grandmother, Venda Castleberry (daughter of Clara Woolsey Brown, daughter of Abraham Mitchell Woolsey), was president of the Woolsey Family Organization in the 1970's. Is there still a Woolsey Family Organization active?
Just a note: I noticed that someone, quoting John D. Lee's story of Julia Ann Mitchell, wife of Thomas Woolsey, assumed, as I had at first, that Lee meant that Julia Ann had been "taken" in death, but held by the prayer of faith. Actually, as my mother pointed out, she was "taken" in childbirth on the journey, and by the prayer of faith it was held back until they had arrived at their destination. Julia Ann lived to raise a very large family, as she took over the raising of Mary Burrell's children after Mary's death in Provo, Utah in 1858.
Thanks again!

Interest in first wife of Andrew Jackson Mccoy 1843-1904. Married Martha Woolsey 1840?-1874?. They married in 1864 in Greene County, TN. They had 2 children Eliza Calico Mccoy 1866 (my ggrandmother) and David Gilbert Mccoy 1869 stated in 1870 census. Andrew remarried Eliza Jane Ellis in 1873. What happened to Martha? David Gilbert's death record states mother was Catherine Woolsey. Information provided by David R McCoy(David Gilbert's son). Another mystery..hope I can find the answer. Andrew and Eliza moved to St Francois County, Mo after 1890. He and Eliza are buried in Bismarck, Mo. Welcome any information and would be happy to share what I do know about this family.

This has been interesting reading. My name is Cynthia Shipley Lazaris. My grandmother was Elizabeth Dobkins, and her mother was Hester Woolsey. I had some knowledge of our family tree from my father, but when I joined Ancestry.com, I really found it to be interesting. On my father's mother side goes back to Cardinal Woolsey and on my father's father side the Shipleys go back to the Tudor family. My great Uncle Henry the VIII which of course is connected to Cardinal Woolsey in history. Who knew they would be connected again when my grandfather Shipley married the Dobkins' family. Can I be listed somewhere with my family tree on this site? Thank you for your interesting information. Cynthia Shipley Lazaris

I have research the first generation and this work has resulted in "Insubordinate Spirit: A True Story of Life and Loss in Earliest America 1610-1665." It has received high marks from the academic research community and the general public. For reviews, please see missywolfe.com. Please also take the time to post your family line on williamhallett.com, a site maintained by the 11th gen. After writing some miscellaneous histories (Revolutionary War and Chronologies for some of the Woolsey families) and writing a history of our Ellensburg (WA) LDS Branch and Ward (1935-2000)and a Power Point Presentation of that and our Kittitas (WA) High School Graduates of 1952 and arranging for our 60th Reunion (!) last summer in June and then publishing both of the above histories, I am now ready to resume some limited work of our Woolsey family. Thank you all for your patience and help. Will Whitaker

I have been up all night trying to find some concrete evidence of a connection between John Woolsey III and Sarah Cole or Sarah Oliphant. If I knew for sure where they were married I would know which Sarah was the correct one. I have seen, on line, where they were married Nov.19, 1773 in Ulster Co. NY and I have seen where they were married Nov.20,1773 in Fincastle Co. Va. There is a marriage record for the Ulster Co. marriage, but I have seen no official record for the Va. marriage. It is curious that John and Sarah named a daughter Remember and a son Israel which would be the names of Sarah's inlaws if she had been married to Philip Cole first. Do you know where the information for the Va. marriage came from? Philip & Rebecca (English) Cole are my 5th great-grandparents. Thank you for all your hard work and for sharing it!

I was so excited to find your website. My husband is descended from James Kell and Parthenia Clifford. We could never find information on Parthenia's family until now. By the way, Parthenia was married to James Kell, not James Hill. I know this is the correct Parthenia because she was born near Mammouth Cave--date of birth is close--and her children are listed correctly on your site. If you want the information I have, I would be happey to send it. Again, thank you!!!!

I am helping a friend determine her ancestery - it led me to your website. She is related to Freelove Bailey and William Joseph Teed/Tidd through their daughter, Phebe Teed/Tidd who married Talcott H. Merwin.
Your website is very nice and well documented - questionable data is discussed and best solutions are given.; Although most of my records indicated Joseph Teed/Tidd, it made perfect sense that he would be known as William Joseph Teed/Tidd and fit into the Bailey/Bayly family. It oepend up a whole new dimension for her ancesery and she is thrilled. Thank you. I will ask her if she is willing to share her information for your data base....

It's so interesting to read the history of the Woolsey family in America. My branch of the family has been in California for 6 generations. The first was my gg grandfather Eugene Denton Woolsey, born in Michigan in 1848. After living in various parts of Kansas and Missouri and serving in the Civil War (I don't know on which side) he moved his family to San Luis Obispo Co. CA in 1891 and on to Modesto, CA in 1905. He died in Santa Cruz in 1939 and is buried at the Citizens Cemetary, Modesto, CA

Hi,
I love your website and glad to see some actual research done. I'm supposedly descended from Richard Woolsey and Sarah Fowler, though I don't see any real source notes online to prove it. The info I have is they had a son, John, b Bedford, NY 1733 who had a daughter, Johanna b 1731 in Marlborough, NY.She and her husband were loyalists who moved to New Brunswick, until my grandfather come to Vermont in the early 1900's. I'm not sure how to go about proving the line. Any suggestions? Thanks, Janet

I have seen the lineage back to Cardinal Woolsey for years on various charts by family members and have always doubted. So glad I discovered your site and the info. My father, Benjamin McIlvain Woolsey was the son of Charles Fletcher Woolsey and both were born in Albia, Iowa. I believe the James W. Woolsey that you speak of is a descendent of my Great Grandfather Charles Theodore's brother Stephen, but I don't know him or have ever seen the family genealogy that he put together.

I am a descendant of Crissie Woolsey Dewey of Ulysses, NE through her daughter Alta, who married my grandfather, John Hauswirth.

Crissie is therefore my great-grandmother, so it is very interesting for me to learn about her and others in the line.

I was very excited to find an entire site dedicated to Woolsey heritage and genealogy, I believe my dad had mentioned this site to me in the past. To all interested Woolsey descendants:

Over the years, there have been hard-working, dedicated researchers who have freely shared their research and family lines with the family. Some of the results of this research we have put on the Woolsey Website in order to make them more available to others. As I have studied the Woolsey files, I am struck with the notion that this family history research is much like studying forensics files. We are trying to find the truth.

My wife enjoys "Forensic Files" and that program with a female Medical Examiner. She enjoys watching the facts emerge and how they relate to one another. Those programs are a little too mundane for me and I like something with more "pizazz" and excitement. My taste runs to "CSI" and "NCIS" for forensic drama.

I believe the Woolsey Family Researchers fit into these dramas very well. They are assiduous in collecting data, from multiple sources, then meticuously examine each bit and process it accordingly, then postulate a certain outcome, based on the facts they have examined.

So, although we do not have a highly skilled forensic scientist like Abby, (who my daughter dressed up as for Halloween, not the "Marilyn Monroe" character, but as the "forensic scientist") with all her delightful quirks, we do have highly skilled ladies who painstakingly search out the census records, marriages and births of their ancestors and add to the general knowledge, such as the late, lamented Val Buchanan (God Rest Her Soul) who took on the task of bringing her Woolsey line to fruition, which she did over a period of several years and then shared her findings with us.

And we do not have a geeky (read hacker) Agent Timothy, we are blessed with several men who are working hard to complete their Woolsey connections, for example, Jeff Miller and Gary Putnam, who have taken on the task of identifying all the Richard Woolseys and Daniel Woolseys in New York State before 1800, a daunting task, and one in which they are making considerable headway.

I have not run across a young man with arrested development and powerful hormones that has trapped a grown man within the confines of a teenage mindset, such as special agent De Nozzo, but every once in a while, we hear from teenagers who are working on such projects as Woolseys in the Revolutionary War and the Civil War and other family projects.

And we like to think we have found several older gentlemen, with a great deal of knowledge and the willingness to share it, along with the ability to verbalize that knowledge and experience, such as the delightful Dr. Ducky. So, on the Internet we can all come together in our own "laboratory" and share insights, discoveries, and ideas.

One thing we all have in common is the desire to discover the TRUTH regarding the lives of our Woolsey (and related) ancestors. And also the desire to find where our family fits into the mainspring of American Life. Where were they when some of the momentuous decisions were made in the passage of time? What was their role in the colonization of America? The settlement of the frontiers? What was their role in the events leading up to the Revolutionary War? Some responded with the Patriots and Revolutionaries and supported the break-up with Great Britain, while others responded with new loyalty to the British Crown and became known as Loyalists.

What did they think of the dire consequences preceeding the Civil War? How did they respond when the call to arms was made? Again, some responded to the call of the South and fought for the right of states to seceed and to keep slavery a state's issue, while others responded to the call of the Union and fought to maintain the Union and to abolish slavery. But each responded according to the dictates of their own conscience.

And Woolseys and their descendants have responded to every call since for militia and military service. And part of our task has been to know where each fit into the overall grand scheme of things. So, may we suggest that you continue to research and look for all the "good things" you can find. And continue to share them with all of us. Thank you for your great help and continued interest. Best wishes. - Sincerely, Wilford W. Whitaker

Fantastic Website, I have been watching over the years but have never done any research on the Woolsey's, and it's great to see all the hard work that you both have done over the years. Keep it up. I have started researching my Woolsey Family, and have got back to my as far as my 2nd Great-grandfather John Thomas Woolsey, from Grantham Bourne, Lincoln, UK in 1846. Now having difficulty in confirming his father, If anyone knows anything, I would appreciate any information and happy to share any information that I already have. I am part of the Bradford/Lincoln, UK Woolsey's

My Woolsey ancestor was Johanna Woolsey, daughter of John & Sarah Woolsey of Greene County, TN. Johanna married Andrew Dobkins, and they had five daughters and one son: Dorcas, Mary "Polly", Rebecca, Rachel, Patsy, and William. Only Patsy and William married-Patsy marrying an Arnold (John K. Arnold, probably); and William Dobkins marrying Charlotte Brandon. I would welcome correspondence with anyone connected with the Greene County, TN Woolseys.

I am actually pretty new at all of this so your site is somewhat overwhelming at times considering you have so much info. but, I do love it and I find myself always returning to your many wonderful pages for information. If you happen to have any suggestions for a newbie please email me. Thank you so much....Deana

I am interested in bio info on Heathcote Muirson (ca1755-1781). His father Dr. George Muirson, a prominant Long Island Tory married a WOOLSEY & several of his daughters married Woolseys. Heathcote who joined the rebel cause, despite his family's inclination may have had a Mary Woolsey for his mother. The names Heathcote & Muirson turn up as given names for several gwnerations of Woolseys. Regards, DBF

Hi, Carolyn
Long time no see. I'm back now, with FTM v 16 program and hopefully soon a bigger better computer to handle the data.
I pretty much burned out quite some time ago and just now I'm getting the urge to finally start up my family history once again.

Only thing I have left is paper records. My back-up floppies got scattered and lost in a mid-winter move some years ago. So..back to the grind.

I only recently learned that my GGG-Grandparents were James Teller & Sarah Woolsey from Ulster Co., New York. Sarah's parents were Benjamin M. Woolsey & Margaret Teller which made James & Sarah 1st cousins. Their son, Benjamin Teller, was born in Ulster Co., New York, made his way to Ohio, then on to Iowa where he died in Carroll Co., Iowa. His sons & daughters settled & married in Iowa for awhile before evidently moving on to Nebraska, So. Dakota, Oregon and finally to California. I love your website and have learned so much since first logging onto it. You have done a "Great" job connecting our ancestors together and sharing that information. I am so very "Proud" to be a part of the "Woolsey Family"!

Their daughter Mary Woolsey m. Jonathan Dean, Sr.
Their son Jonathan Dean, Jr m. Mary Cole.

Jonathan Dean, Jr. and Mary (Cole) Dean moved their family from TN to Van Buren Co., AR soon after the territory was opened up for settlement.

Susanna (Dean) Murphy, possibly a widow by this time, also moved from TN to Van Buren Co., AR about the same time.

Susanna and John Murphy's son, my g-g-grandfather, John Francis Murphy m. Mary Elizabeth Sanders in Van Buren Co., AR.

I was born in Van Buren Co., AR.

I don't know of any other Woolsey descendants in AR (except for all the cousins, etc from my own branch) but I expect they're out there somewhere.

I recently visited Prospect Cemetery in Queens (NYC) and was shown the gravestone of Thomas Wiggins (1728) but there was no marker for Rebecca. I had found the ancestry for Clarissa Sherwood Woolsey, his mother, in World Family Tree but NOTHING for John, born 1802 except a picture and that date, until Virginia found me. If related to John and Clarissa, put her name in world search to find her, and if you like going WAAAAY back do the same for Rebecca Trowbridge and the site of Geoffry David Trowbridge. If you keep following it will take allday! What fun!

With the passing of my mother, who is descended from Woolsey's of NY, I seem to be the matriarch of the family. While browsing for info, I stumbled on your website which turned out to be most informative. I hope to find out more as a neophyte researcher. Thanks for this opportunity. So far, the only references are my gr aunt Clara M & gr uncle Glenn, married to Catherine M., nee Klinko as listed in Hayts Cemetery in Ithaca, NY. My grandmother was Lulu Mae Woolsey, married to Charles Olin Stanton. Jeane Phyliss was their daughter. Unfortunately, there are a lot of people buried in Hayts with no headstones. My mother was Gail Stanton, married to Edgar Chase, Jr

I have some hand printed and typed family tree info which shows my grandfather (Samuel J. Woolsey) to be the grandson of Robert Woolsey and Frances Mooney (born 1807 and 1812).
They came to Canada from County Armagh, Ireland settled in Quebec and some of their family later went to Renfrew County in Ontario, then to the Rainy River District of Northwestern Ontario in the early 1900's. I noted one of your myths disputed Irish origins, saying some Woolsey's fled from England to Ireland. Guess that makes most the the Canadian Woolsey's so far removed from American Woolsey's that they are not the same family. Any comments?

I encountered your Woolsey section when I was doing a search for Benjamin Woolsey (son of Rev Benjamin Woolsey and Abigail Taylor). My husband is descended from him through his daughter Sarah Woolsey by his first wife Esther Issacs. What caught my eye in particular was that Col Melancthon Taylor Woolsey died in the town I was raised in - Trenton (or Barneveld) NY! I'm not sure if your site relates only to one line or not but I am interested in clarifying some of the Woolsey info I have. Three slightly different hand written geneological outlines were found in the Hopkins Family Bible from Thomas, Cardinal Wolsey (??!!) or his brother Thomas (?!) to Benjamin (Jr) who married Esther Isaacs. It's a great site - I'll be back.

I am new to geneology via the internet as of October of this year. My great grandmother was Cora Emma Woolsey. Her parents Newton Woolsey & Emma Woolsey were 2nd cousins - sharing as great grandparents Zephaniah Woolsey & Sarah Woolsey (who were 2nd cousins once removed through George Joris Woolsey's sons Thomas & John). Also Emma Woolsey's grandfather Gilbert Woolsey was also a descendant of Thomas via his son Richard Woolsey.
I have greatly appreciated all the effort that went into this site and all the painstaking research Mr. Whitaker has done. I just found this site a couple weeks ago (as I am new to computers as well as the internet) and realized I needed to thoroughly research what you have here before I ask questions that you have already answered. I found the book by Rev. Paul Woolsey that I had been seeking. Thank you for putting that on-line.
I have throughly enjoyed learning about the Woolseys. My great grandmother Cora never spoke about her family so any of my family doing research has had to start from scratch.
Forgive my ignorance, but what is the best way to stay in touch with those researching the Woolsey family? I would like to know if anyone has found any stories concerning the Woolsey's involvement in the Revolutionary War - particularly Zephaniah (1740-1807)and Thomas Jr. (1760-1797). One website for Smyth County, VA indicated they may have fought at the Battle of Kings Mountain & the battle of Guilford Courthouse.

Wonderful website. Interesting that I came on this search because of 'Nancy Woolsey's' will Halifax NC 1820. My family of Whitaker was mentioned in her will - She was of the Jacob Woolsey line from King William Co., VA and not connected with this line. [as far as I know] Very nice site.

Hi WOOLSEYs! Recent postings appear to connect to my John Peter KEELER & Leah (WOOLSEY) KEELER. It is going to be very exciting to work with other family members on this project that I have been nibbling at for over twenty years.

Oh, and this is a lovely website.

It looks fantastic. I can just imagine how much time that you've dedicated to it and I know all the "cousins" appreciate it. I just hope that you'll be able to continue to update it so that I can find some of my direct line in your records

I am doing research of my family. For a long time we always believed that a grandfather, Nicholas Trosper was married to Anne or Anna Woolsey. We could always find information about him but nothing on her. It appears, from this site, she was actually Mary Ann/e Woolsey. Is this correct? Thanks for all the research.

Thank-you for this informative site. I am the grand-daughter of Ardell Wolsey of British Columbia. I am new to geneology and have found that your site has given some very helpful info. Do you have any info on Burrell Mottley Wolsey, born 1888 in Wales,Sanpete,Utah? He is my Great-Grandfather but all info I have on him states that he and his wife, Alvena Olsen had no children. Anything you may have would be appreciated. Thank-you kindly, Shannon Costain
