Her father was James who died in 1772 in Virginia. Her mother was Hannah Todd McMurtry. She married Hezekiah Hargrave in 1785 in Rutherford County, North Carolina. I'm trying to determine where she was in the period just before her marriage. Its possible she was in Kentucky with one of her uncles, Joseph McMurtry in particular. Anything will help.

I have just recently discovered that I haave a 6th GGM who was called Janet McMurtrie. She married a ? Ramsay of Ayrshire, and had at least two children, John Ramsay (Born 1730 in Maybole, Ayrshire, Scotland, who married Mareen Hazel, their son, John Ramsay married Janet Stewart, and Elizabeth Ramsay who married Gilbert Blane.
John Ramsay and Janet Stewart had a son, James Miller Ramsay, who married Isabella McCulloch.
Their daughter Janet Ramsay married James Miller Fletcher
Their son, David Melville Fletcher was my GGF
David Miller Fletcher married Kathleen Aivivan Ford (Born Tasmania, Aust)
David and Kathleen had James Melville Fletcher, my maternal grandfather.

Margaret McMurtry (b. abt. 1810)left a New Testament in which she recorded information of her marriage to Thomas Ross (b. 1803), and the births and baptisms of her children. The family came to America in 1849, living first in Allegheny Co, PA and then in Wood Co, WV. Her descendants are scattered far and wide across the USA, but several still reside in WV. We may not be McMurtry's by name, but our heritage is recorded.

My grand father was named Victor Mcmurtrie, born 1900 and died i think in 2004! I think he was from around the scottish boarders and immigrated out to nz with his parents when he was very young although i cant be sure of this. Later on in life he came to settle in a small mill town in NZ called Kawerau. He had 5 children, Keith, Robbie, Shona, Beth and Margaret(my mother)
I live in Yorkshire UK now and would be good to find out his side of the families area.

I have traced our line as far back as his father Alexander b.around 1717 in connection with VA but that's as far as I have been able to get. It is by no means certain that Margery Fisher was Quaker. This report has quoted me extensively-without my permission, I might add. The Quaker records do show a Margery Fisher who was dismissed for marrying out of unity. However, her father is thought to have been John Fisher, formerly of New Jersey, who was Anglican. In Blue Lick Kentucky I found a monument describing the last battle of the Revolutionary War fought in Kentucky with a John McMurtry listed as ensign. Danial Boone and brother also fought this battle, which was lost to the Brit's. Ensign John McMurtry is listed as captured on the monument, but listed as Luetenent in other documents.

Marion McMurtire was born at Dallmellington in Ayrshire in Scotland. She was the youngest daughter of David McMurtrie living at that place. In 1849 she travelled to Melbourne to join her brother, another David McMurtrie living there. Marion McMurtrie was married at the John Knox Church Swanston Street to Alexander Patterson a pastoralist of Westernport.
Alexander Patterson had acquired St,. Germains cattle station on the Cardinia Creek in the district in 1848. Although not very distant from Melbourne as the crow flies, the country was primitive bush abounding in game and the vicinity of the homestead was a favourite camping ground of the Boonerang tribe of blacks.
After the wedding they drove through to Dandenong and across country to the station, escorted by a cavalcade of riders. In the springy ground nearing the home the gig was bogged up to the axles and a horseman was sent on ahead to the homestead for another horse and vehicle to which the bride was transferred, eventually reaching home safely.
She was warmly welcomed and 'There was a sound of revelry by night...' characteristic of those early days. Mrs. Patterson who seemed to have no physical fear soon adapted herself to her new surroundings.
She capably controlled the household and was a most hospitable hostess. She had a family of three sons and one daughter, the eldest being eighty one in the centenary Year when their aggregate reached 308 years.
Mrs. Patterson was for a long-time a member and helper in the Cranbourne Presbyterian Church; of which her new husband was one of the founders. She died at St Germains and was buried in the Cranbourne cemetery. The Reverend R.W. Rock who visited her in her last short illness wrote of her and published in 'The messenger's "She died as she had lived, a true wife, a good mother, an affectionate steadfast friend and a good Christian.......Her influence will last forever".
Mrs Patterson was a sister of David McMurtrie the oldest elder in the Presbyterian Church in Victoria.
My son's link is a follows: Alexander and Marion had a son named Alexander David b 20/11/1858. He married Elizabeth Harvey Twigg, daughter of James Whiteacre Twigg. Their second son Raoul Twigg Patterson married Ruth Whyte, daughter of Archdeacon Whyte and their first child, a son, was Colin Twigg Patterson. Colin married Doris Lacey and their second child a son, was Mark Colin Lindsey Patterson. I married Mark and our son is Michael John Patterson b 6/1/1974.

Found CF-039 & located a whole new world although they are related to me by marriage only through descendants of the Tailor, James McMURTRIE's 2nd marriage to Janet MCLEOWNAN, 15 Jan.1838 at Marylebone, Ayr. Their daughter Jane McMURTRIE, b.21 Sep.1839, Dailly, Ayr (Dress Maker), m. William GRANT, b.abt. 1844, Dailly, Ayr (House Measurer), 15 Sep. 1865 in Hutchesontown, Glasgow. They had 7 children in Govan, Glasgow, one being John GRANT, b.1 May 1876, (bookkeeper/accountant), who emigrated to Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada in 1898. There in 1906 he met & married my maternal aunt, Mary SAWCZUK, had 6 children, enlisted in WWI, wounded seriously at the Battle of the Somme in France, but survived the war and worked for the Dominion of Canada as a Tax Accounant. He died in 1936.
His mother, Jane (nee MCMURTRIE) GRANT, died 5 May 1893 of a "Malignant Disease" in Tradeston, Glasgow.

In looking at the Dalmellington Origins Myth article and then looking at the genealogy for Dalmellington on this website, I see a discrepancy concerning the father of Duncan McMurtrie b. 1748 at Dalmellington. The Dalmellington Myth article has James' dates as 1715-1753 with three children: James, David and William with a good deal of corroborating evidence. The Scottish family genealogy list for Duncan McMurtrie b 1748 at Dalmellington has his father James as having been born 1710 with a somewhat different list of children than I see in the parish records and in the article but including Duncan. Is the Dalmellington genealogy list entry concerning James (father of Duncan b. 1748) considered incorrect in light of new evidence? I would tend to think so, based on my own examination of the records. Concerning the Dalmellington Origins Myth article, a letter cited therein refers to my gr gr grandfather William ("Wilhelm")McMurtrie in Wilkes-Barre as having been born in Dalmellington in 1818. He was in fact born in Glasgow ( in 1819?), and well knew it based on his Scottish census records, however, his death record says he was born at Dalmellington, as he so strongly associated himself with that town.

Another follow-up concerning the Dalmellington myth. My great, great grandfather was William McMurtrie b circa 1819 in Glasgow. The Dalmellington article on your site gives the name as Wilhelm. I am certain they are one and the same given the description "old weaver," location, Wilkes-Barre, and immigration date, 1880. His father (also named William) was likewise a woolen handloom weaver. Furthermore, he had a son John who was a baker in Wilkes-Barre who was also "chief" of the Caledonian Society. John immigrated in 1868, according to his census records. Concerning the name "Wilhelm," William had a daughter-in-law named Wilhelmina Dowell McMurtrie who was born at Abington, Lanarkshire so maybe there was some practice of using the German (or perhaps his thick Scottish accent was misunderstood). In any case, he appears as William on all records associated with him in Scotland, and on his grave marker in Pittston, PA. His daughter Elizabeth married John Hastie. They were my father's paternal grandparents. As I said in an earlier post, I have a good deal more information about these McMurtries if you are interested.

Just a follow up. I read the Dalmellington myth piece and it answers my question concerning James McM. As I thought, his record was missing but he was the son of William. Incidentally, concerning the Dalmellington piece, the old weaver William McMurtrie who immigrated to the US in 1880 and was interviewed in Wilkes-Barre (with his son) was my great grandfather. James 1715-53 (son of William) was his great grandfather, Duncan b 1748, his grandfather, and William, b 1782, his father. I'd be happy to contribute other information. I guess no one knows anything about the first William, father of James. Duncan's father was James. No mother given, raising the question of whether there was more than one James at Dalmellington. James first appears as a parent in the Dalmellington records in 1738. His first two sons were named William, suggesting his father may have been William. I see a William as a parent at Dalmellington in 1721 but there is no record for a son James. Perhaps it was simply not recorded. There were 4 marriage records for Jas. McM. between the late 1720s and late 1730s in nearby parishes. James b 1712 at Dailly appears to have remained at Dailly as a James McM announced banns there in 1732 and there is a record for a daughter in 1738, seemingly ruling him out. Can you help me determine who was Duncan's father? Thanks.

I have a vague childhood recollection that the family is originally from Scotland and MAYBE the name was MACMurtery and later changed to MCMurtery. Not sure about that fact, though.
I think there was a Martha (aunt or great aunt of above siblings) who lived in Nova Scotia.
That is all the information I have on this family.

Perhaps I can help those who are untagle the relationships of the McMURTRIEs (cf-112) who lived in Michigan, Alabama, and Tennessee In 1860 we find many children of JOHN McMURTRIE living in or near Three Rivers, Michigan. Four of these are found in the following account. PASCHEL LEWIS McMURTRIE has been twice a widower; in 1854 he has givn his motherless three month old son HIRAM McMURTRIE to be raised by his sister MARGARET (Halliday). Another sister MARY ANN McMURTRIE is married to Davis S. HALE, who has or will have hotels in both Three Rivers and Marcellus in neighboring Cass County; her oldest stepson is CALEB HENRY HALE (b.1839). CROTHERS McMURTRIE, another of John's sons, is also probably there, CROTHERS McMURTRIE(b. 1839) is probably also there, although I have not found him in the census. Just across the cline in Marcellus Twp of Cass County is New York born farmer THADDUS OAKS, his wife EUNICE and several children including daughters DELILA (18). and LAURA (16). Fast Forward to 1862. CROTHERS McMURTRIE maries Laura Oaks (Oakes); CALEB HENRY HALE and one of Laura's sisters, Perhaps Deliah have a daughter MARIE ANTONETTE HALE, father Caleb and his brother join the Union army and go off to fight. Forward again, this time to 1870; in Madison Albama we find, listed consecutively in the Federal census the family if THADDIUS OAKES with them is "ANTONETTE HALE" and next in the census is CROTHERS McMURTRIE, his wife Laura and baby PAUL McMURTRIE. Back in Three Rivers CALEB HALE, Antonette's father, has married ELIZA MARION and is working as a butcher; they have a daughter CORA HALE. In Michigan, HIRAM HALE marries CATHERINE GENTZER and they have several children before her death in 1889. MARIE ANTONETTE HALE marries ROBERT TIRRELL and they are eventually divorced. HIRAM McMURTRIE then weds MARIE ANTONETTE HALE (TIRRELL) and they settle in Tennessee. HIRAM McMURTRIE dies in 1924 and is returned to Three Rivers where he rests in Riverside Cemetery.

I have three McMurtry's that I'm trying to connect. The first would be Elizbeth McMurtry who married abt. 1819 David Crawford of Antrim co., Ireland. Their son James Crawford settled in Ticonderoga, Essex Co., New York. The second is a William McMurtry b. abt. 1820 who married a Emelina Clough in Ticonderoga, New York. The third would be another William McMurtry who married Eleanor Crawford, daughter of the David & Elizabeth (McMurtry) Crawford mentioned above. There are two other McMurtry's who settled in Crown Point/Ticonderoga, New York area. The Penfield Museum in Ironville, New York has a MacMurtry family bible on display in their museum...

I am married to Charles Don McMurtre who is the great-grandson of Alexander McMurtry, who was the son of Thomas & Charlotte (Maupin) McMurtry. I have all of the data for the descendants of Alexander and his second wife. His first wife was Amanda J. (?). His first child, Mattie Belle, was born near Springfield, MO in 1869, and he traveled to Delta Co. and purchased 50 acres of land in 1872. In 1877, he married his 2nd wife Emily K. Smith of Honey Grove, Lamar Co., TX. His last 2 sons were Wiley, Charles' grandfather, and Albert.
In 1906, the 3 children are signing land transfer deeds. Mattie's mother is listed as Amanda J. This is the only mention I have been able to find of Mattie's mother. I have not been able to find a marriage record for Alexander and Amanda J. I suspect she is his step sister from his mother's 2nd marriage to Wm. McGaugh.

My two greatAunts after the Civil War about summer of 1866 moved from West Virginia to Lexington, Lafayette Co., Missouri with their two young sons. Sarah A. Mayberry Morehead subsequently married William E. Neale who had moved from Wood County, West Virginia with his father who lived on a 450 acre farm in the area. He was a highly educated and productive citizen of that county, they produced three children named Charley, Flora and an infant not yet named.

Coats of Arms are granted to individuals and not all bearers of a particular surname. So the answer to your question is, no, there isn't a file of the McMurtrie Coat of Arms, because there isn't one for all members of the Sept. There is a particularly good FAQ on the subject on the English College of Arms site [http://www.college-of-arms.gov.uk/faq.htm]
The right to bear a clan badge is another matter. Again, this right isn't automatic. The clan (or, in the case of the collective 'McMurtrie' families, the associated Sept) must have approval granted by the chief Scottish herald.

Her Father and Mother were Francis Marion McMURTRY and Elizabeth PITMAN, parents of William McMURTRY who married Ruth CHAMPION in Crawford County, Indiana. They migrated to Knox County, Illinois and were one of the founding families of this county. His obituary states:
He was first elected to the House of Representatives in 1836 and was re-elected in 1838 serving four consecutive years in that capacity. In 1841 he was elected state senator serving there for four years. In 1848 he reached his highest prominence in political preferment when elected Lieutenant-Governor under Governor French. He was also one of the state commissioners for building the penitentiary at Joliet and during the war was commissioned Colonel of the One Hundred and Second regiment of Illinois Infantry.

My grandmother Margaret McMurtrie immigrated to America when she was 14 (approx. year 1911) with her parents, Andrew & Margaret Ann and her brothers, John, James Lean, Andrew, and Angus Robert. They eventually settled in Bishop, California. I do not know the year they settled there, nor do I know the names of my great grandparents parents.

I came to Canada From Belfast in 1969 with my wife Thelma (nee McClements of Garvagh, B, (20th June 1949) Co. Londonderry, N.I.)... I was born in Belfast on 7th Jan 1943 and shortly thereafter I was sent to Portmuck, Islandmagee to be cared for my aunt Robertha because of the blitz (WW2) which destroyed many homes in the immediate area where I was born. I know that my aunt Robertha was not really an actual aunt but I have no other recollections other than she took good care of me until the end of the bombing in Belfast. I have 2 sons, the eldest being Robert Garth Cowan, born in Hamilton, Ont, on the 25th Nov. 1974 and Brian Andrew Cowan, born in London, Ont. Canada, on the 11th July 1989 and we all now live in Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada, (pop. 50,000) and it is interesting to note that some other McMurtry decendants also live in "the HAT" ie. I by chance met Mary Ellen Watkins and found there was a close connection to my Islandmagee ancestors Mary Ellen Has ancestors Jane and Agnes and my mothers name was Jane and I also had an Aunt Agnes with different birth dates but assumably they were "named after".
I believe Sam Mc Murtry of Queensland, Aust. will be reading this and I have some interesting painting/photos which I do intend to email to Sam in the near future with reference to CF-130 and (if my facts are right) his trip to Nor. Ireland about 20 or so years ago when he visited old family connections, including my Aunt Agnes (CF-230 #68) and gave to her a typed copy of the "LOSS OF THE KINKORA" which was a "full-rigged ship loaded with lumber at Victoria BC for London".... ((with Capt. William McMurtry B.1857 and D.1904 Sydney Aust. (CF-230#4,20) and his brother James McMurtrey who was the ship's mate CF230#8-35 b.1867)).... which sprung a leak in bad weather and was beached (in 1898) on Clipperton Island, a remote island in the Pacific I believe not far from Chile etc. and with an interesting factual discription of "hurricanes and hardships" including an 18 day, 700 plus mile lifeboat "long journey to the nearest port in North America" ....THE THRILLING CONNECTION HERE IS THAT I HAVE A 30" by 20" (approx) PAINTING OF THE "KINKORA" ON MY LIVING ROOM WALL and signed by "Capt W. McMurtrey"...It is interesting to note that his son William John McMurtrey (CF230-24) was born on the 12th Sept 1899 at Chile and died in Belfast on the 8th July 1969 (I left Belfast to come to Canada in Sept 1969 and regret that I never knew him)... I also have a picture in my den of my grandfather Samuel McMurtrey (Cf230-#57 who died on 5th Sept 1933, 10 years before I was born, but I know he loved to play the fiddle. For what it is worth, all the McMurtry family connection in Nor. Ireland that I knew, including recent generations, are decent, warm, sincere, kind, humerous, solid based down to earth family types with no "Airs or Graces" (old expression) and I choose to believe this was passed on from the character of my grandfather and those before him....I really enjoy looking over the records and am grateful and impressed to Sam and all the others who compiled the McMurtrey hustory. They had twelve children, some of whom stayed in IN while 4 others went to Hopkins Co TX in 1842-43.

I accidently found your site when researching my family tree descending from Allan Caldwell & Janet Guthrie of St Quivox. The Janet who married Andrew McMurtrie at St Quivox on 11/7/1807 was the eldest recorded child and I am descended from the first son and third child John. He married Florence Irene Ivory, b. 3/1/1878 in East Brady PA; d. 9/4/1966 in Pittsburgh, PA. She was a practicing dentist @ 505 Arch Street, Pittsburg (now Northside) as early as 1910. Do not have a marriage date or birth date for Alexander J. McMurtrie. They had no children.
We called him "Uncle Terry". He was a bit younger than her, I believe, and died about 9 years before she did. An old letter from Aunt Florence mentions "Mother McMurtrie" - so she had to have been from that general area. Maybe one of the Huntington PA McMurtries?
