My father Seaman First Class John E. Stevens from McKeesport, PA where he was a steelworker (rolling mill). He served on the Orvetta possibly 1944-1945 and held a boatswain rating. He was discharged at San Pedro, CA in December 1945 and died in 1968. The World War II service of my father, uncles and neighbors was a strong influence on me to serve in our armed forces.

My father was Joseph H. Sinex. His service on Orvetta is listed on his NAVPERS 553. He was a seaman first class from Chester, PA, who served in the Pacific Theater, American Theater and the Philippines in 1944-46. My father was a shipbuilder whose original enlistment was denied because of his essential work at Sun Ship in Chester (Sun Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company). He was later inducted. Thank you for this service, and for remembering these vessels and their people.

My father, Albert E Adams, CM1c V-6, served on the USS LONG ISLAND (CVE-1). To the best of my knowledge, he was never aboard the USS ORVETTA. However, his discharge document clearly shows "USS ORVETTA (IK-157); ADM. COMSERVRON TEN (DIST. CRAFT.)", 1944-45. He died at Pensacola, Florida, on 01/27/1998. I would like to hear from anyone who might be able to explain the USS ORVETTA entry on his "DD-214". This entry is probably a mistake. However, there could be some other explanation know only to those who were actually aboard the USS ORVETTA.

I served at a small shore facility (NABU 13 - Warehouses etc...)on the side of the Huangpoo river a few miles down stream of the Bund. as a F1c I supervised civilians operating water treatment on the small base and voluntarily served as a fire fighter and was billited with the base fire department next to the mess hall. Daily, I collected water samples and drove my weapons carrier accross Shanghai to a Hospital where I left the water samples and obtained results of prior samples I had delivered. We treated the municipal water which was contaminated by pumping it through stone filters and chlorinated the water. On my daily trip accross Shanghai I usually stopped at the bowling alley in the facility at the Race Course where I bowled and ate Steak and Eggs. I had a great time, and celebrated my 18th birthday while there. I was there when the city changed from the English method to the american method of driving on the right side of the road on January 1st 1946. I learned to drive while there and was issued a drivers license by asking my commanding officer for one. I took no test. Just taught myself. That experience set me on my career of water and sewage treatment working for the U. S. Air Force as a civilian employee and eventually retired from the city of Warren MI having served as the Superintendent (Sanitary Engineer) for the prior 20+ years.

In looking at my WWII Navy records of where I went and when, I saw that I spent just one day on the Orvetta, Nov.25, 1945 in the Whangpoo (Sp?) River in Shanghai. I was a transient, having just been detached from HMS Manxman and was waiting for the USS Wiley (DD 597)for transport to my permanent ship (USS Blue Ridge) at Taku. I had forgotten the Orvetta completely after more than 60 years and was curious about what kind of ship it was. Thanks, Ted Northrop

I'm trying to find any information that I can regarding my father's naval experience. He was only 15 when he joined; he talked his father into lying about his age.
Over the years, Dad told me stories of his navy days. As a very young man from rural eastern Tennessee, serving his country was an act of pride as well as a a sense of adventure.
Dad died of cancer 5/16/06. He was honored with a military service per his request, and for the first time, I felt the honor and pride that he must have felt in serving his country.
If anyone knew my father, John Wells from Maryville, Tennessee, I'd love to hear from you. His nickname was "Red" because of the color of his hair.
Sincerely,
Sonja Wells (daughter)

Brother of Robert, Jr, below. Our Father may have been Ensign Ulmer on the USS Orvetta.
Our Dad only explained once about his Navy career. If memory serves he was still in the US, about to graduate from OCS as an Ensign, and expecting to meet his fate in the upcoming invasion of Japan, when he heard the news that some sort of super bomb had been dropped on Hiroshima. Earliest he would have served on USS Orvetta is late 1945, definitely 1946, possibly 1947.
He also mentioned being on a Navy vessel cruising-patrolling one of the major rivers in China, probably the Yangtse.
He recounted having returned to, I believe, San Diego with his ship right at the end of his Navy service in 1947, possibly on the Orvetta right before she was decommissioned.
Finally, in the early 1960's he wrote the Navy Department to find out what happened to the USS Orvetta. He said they wrote back that there had never been a USS Orvetta. He then remarked that he would sure like to know what that big hunk of metal was that he spent so much time on after WWII.
If you remember Ensign/LTJG Ulmer at all, please make contact.

My father is in poor health and would never talk about the war in detail to us kids or as we grew older, until now. We believe he has had a stroke and he is starting to talk more about the past like never before. He told my husband yesterday that he served in Normandy on a troop carrier and later he went to the South Pacific to Okinowa and then Lehti (where we think he was captured). We knew about Lehti, but nobody has ever heard Normandy mentioned. We knew about serving on a troop carrier, too. My family is questioning his story about Normandy (my mom and other siblings). I think it is possible because his current memory is terrible, but anything from the past he explains with great detail. His discharge papers mentioned the USS Orvette 1X157, USS Briareus, and USS Beaver. I know he was a Seaman 1st class and SV-6 USNR is on his papers. Papers also mention an Asian/Pacific Campaign. Does anyone know of Jack G. Leak, Jr. or remember him. He is from Texas and was based initially at Camp Wallace, Texas. Then he went to San Francisco before going over sea. I especially am wanting to confirm his stories about Normandy, but have nothing to go on except his stories of recent.
Any light you can shed would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.
Carol Leak Smith

I've read others accounts of their fathers service on this ship. I wish I had specifics, but all I have is an entry on his discharge papers showing he was on the ship sometime during his service. His rank was a machinist mate third class MM3C and I'm hoping to find one of the shipmates that can confirm when he was aboard. He is not currently listed on David Dorseys crew roster and I'd like to rectify that by proving that he did serve on the ship and when. Your help, or that of any other reading this would be appreciated. Any information can be sent to me at 4202 High Ridge Road, Haymarket, VA 20169. I hope to be at this address for many years to come so if you are reading this a few years hence, please try to make contact.

I came aboard the Ovetta in late September of 1945. I enlisted in New York City in December of '44, and attended boot camp at Sampson New York Naval Training Station, and Electrician Mate's School, also at Sampson. Left Treasure Island, San Francisco on the USS Fairisle, then to Enieneweok in the Marshall Islands, then to Okinowa, then to Shanghai - where I was assigned to the "Mighty O", as named by Alex Shillin. Finally to Subic Bay in June of '46, where I was temporarily assigned to the USS Serrano ATF-112. This was after our tow line to the Serrano broke our forward windlass, causing us to lose our anchors - which set us adrift in the Yangtzee River. (Under the direction of our Engineering Officer Lieutenant Groves, we established power and sailed under our own power to Subic Bay. I was an EM3 in the after engine room during the time of this incident.)

My father, CDR George S. Ives, USNR, just passed away in October of this year. He served with ComSERVDiv3 and was on a tender in Shanghai, China from just after the Okinawa Campaign to March or April 1946. He returned to the United States on the USS McKee DD575 anchored in the Yanghzi River
and had caught a ride from Shanghai down the Huangpu River to the Yanghzi River. Was the USS Orvetta where he was garrisoned or was there another tender in Shanghai. He mentioned that there had been a heavy cruiser in Shanghai when he was there. Any information you may have on the tender or possibly this is the ship he stayed aboard will be appreciated. Sadly, my dad, John Francis Walsh, is no longer with us. He passed away of lung cancer in 1992. My dad was so very proud of his years in the Navy and requested that upon his death he be cremated and buried at sea. His ashes were scattered on the Atlantic Ocean on July 4, 1992.
My dad did not speak very much of his service, however, he did say he was aboard the Orvetta and he sailed the Pacific Ocean during World War II. I remember that when he went to Walt Disney World he said that the "Chinese pavilion" at Epcot Center reminded him of his visit to Shanghai. I think he was a payroll clerk on the ship.
If anyone has any special memories of my dad, please send them along. I'd love to share them with my sister and brothers and our children.

My father is dead, however I found that he was on board this ship while it was in the Pacific. He told me he had a pet monkey on board. I was told he was an electrician on the ship. I had numerous photos that were lost in a fire in a storage building 25 years ago. He cried when he told me that when they would dump the garbage overboard the little children would swim out and grab all they could to eat as they were starving. The older children (12 years old) would take the food back to the little ones that were standing on the shoreline.

My dad, Amadeo "Amie" Lombardo, served on this ship for 6 months during WWII. I found this website while doing online research for him and a buddy of his who was also on the ship with him. They will get together this July for the first time since the war.

It would be nice to have a reunion of the USS Orvetta crew.
I look forward to hearing from others who served with me.
The photographs brought back alot of memories and it would
be great to converse with some of the guys about those days
on the USS Orvetta, where I was dubbed "The Greek".

My uncle, George K. Petty, S 1/c, was a radioman aboard the
ship. He died in Las Vegas, NV earlier this month (Jan. 2002).
My career was in submarines, so I appreciate the photos of the USS Holland.
Nice web site!

My uncle, George Kibbe Petty was a Seaman 1/C who I believe served with the radioman gang. He would have been onboard sometime between Aug 1944 to Jan 1946.
His Notice of separation list both the Orvetta and LST 732 as vessels served on. Would love to have any additional information.

I was a Fireman 1c (Electrician striker). The crew members names I remember are listed on the photos. I have lost touch with them all, and would be a happy old man if I can contact some of them. There are others I remember, but can't remember their names.
