A few years ago, Quintin Publications made up a CD of The Burnett Genealogy by Edgar A. Burnett for me. They currently have the CD's for sale for about 11.00. Also The Burnap, Burnett Genealogy by Henry Wyckoff is on line through Ancestry.com. You probably already know all of this but just in case I thought I'd pass it on!

Thank you for a great website to peruse.

I am looking at the Simmons/Semans clan along th eastern shore of MD/DE and noticed your Greenwood Semans.

Kent County's Orphans, Minors & Heirs 1778-1812 (MD) lists both 9 June 1807 & 21 July 1810 the account of Rebecca Semans as the guardian of Hannah, Araminta, Sarah and Greenwood Semans, minors, passed by the Court. Then 11 June 1811 the account of William Wood & wife are listed as guardians to Hannah, Araminta, Sarah & Greenwood Seman/Simon.

Where did you find his father's name as David Semans?

Thanks for any insight.

I would like to make a correction to your page. James H. Bunce,d.1901 Louisville, Jefferson, KY was not the Mayor of Louisville. Joseph H. Bunce, brother of James was the Mayor. James H. Bunce was also a steamboat Captain. Both James and Joseph were in Henderson, Henderson, KY before going to Louisville. I am a Mullin and George descendant and have researched carefully to prove that James and Joseph were brothers and had many connections with the Mullin and George families of Henderson and Louisville, KY. Thank you.

This is Abraham Hendryx Jr. It is misspelled like this often, but we know this to be a Hendryx.

I am interested in Josephine Mullin that you have posted as married to Joseph H. Bunce. My gg- grandfather was Joshua Mullin ,of Louisville, Jefferson Co., Kentucky. He was married to Sarah Reese George. The George's came to Louisville around 1837 from Philadelphia, PA. Richard George worked about the docks and Joshua Mullin appears as a mate in the 1859 Louisville City Directory but my grandmother believed Joshua was a boat captain and was severly hurt in a boating accident that caused his death in 1869. My grandmother grew up with Joshua's wife, Sarah Reese George Mullin, in her home, so had the chance to talk of family with her grandmother. I would like to find the place of birth for Joshua and his parents. Thank you. Marie <rreedy@mics.net>

Hi,

I am writing to you from the Netherlands, where I am presently preparing an article about the author/playwright/publisher/literary impresario Oliver Bell Bunce (1828-1890. I am a professor of English in the University of Amsterdam.
I have found out that Oliver Bunce's father was George Washington Bunce, who was baptized on 16 January 1800 in the Episcopal Church on Broadway and Seventy-First street New York and must have died before 1840. On 15 March 1826 he married Eliza Maria Bell (c. 1802-23-02-1895). The service was conducted by the Rev. Dr. James Milnor, rector of St. George's Church. George Washington Bunce was a son of Nathaniel Bunce (1780-1849)and Cynthia Fish.
Nathaniel Bunce had a vault built in the New York City Marble Cemetery. Other relatives buried in the same vault were his wife, Cynthia Fish and his daughter-in-law Eliza Maria Bell.
I have other information which you might like to have.

Best regards,
Bouwe Postmus

When I found your page on the Pierce family, I noted that you did not have the name of the spouse of Jane Pierce, daughter, of Abner and Betsy DEWEY PIERCE. Jane married my great-great-grandfather, Dr. Joseph Sackett HART in Dundee, Yates Co., NY, on 29 May 1853. According to Dr. Hart's obituary from an unidentified newspaper, "in 1849, he went to Virginia and bought a tract of 600 acres of land, near Chantilly, in Fairfax county." I found the couple in the 1860 census in Fairfax Co. and also in the 1870 census. By the 1880 census they were living in Washington, DC. Their grandson, Raymond Sagar HART (my grandfather) wrote a book entitled "Descendants of John and Sarah Dungan Hart of the Fifth Generation in America of the Hart Family of Warminster Township, Bucks County, Pennsylvania," self-published in 1969, in which on p. 66, the marriage is referenced. They had four children, of whom only two lived beyond their first year: Lillian Pierce Hart (17 Apr 1855 - 13 Feb 1923) and William Lanning Hart (28 Jan 1859 - 10 Jan 1923). Jane died on 5 Sep 1888 and Joseph on 30 Dec 1892. They are buried in Rock Creek Cemetery, Washington, DC. I appreciate all the work you've done to assemble your website and am pleased to be able to link my family to it.

Hi Bonnie,

I am a descendant of Thomas Bird of Hartford, CT, who died there shortly before 10 August 1662. The inventory of his estate was taken by Thomas Bunce of Hartford, your ancestor, with the assistance of John Cole. Please e-mail me; I would like to compare notes on the Bunce and Cole families. I have also located a marriage record for a Robert Cull (perhaps Cole?) and a Mary Bird in Northamptonshire, which may be relevant.

Bonnie,

After years of research I have finally found first wife of Uriah P. Townsend (my 2nd-great grandfather), son of Uriah Townsend and Dolly Fox. She was Almira Beal, d of John Beal and Lydia Smith. Died in NY prior to death of her father and I have his will, showing that her portion went to children that I have documented and mentions Uriah P by name. I also have just found proof that Uriah was alive as late as 1881 but was deceased prior to 1900 census. I can't find him on the 1880 census, but could be unreadable name.

Just a note. As far as I know, the middle generation here did not exist. If you look at the birth dates, it's clear that the second Robert Hungerford did not have Eleanor when he was 5 years old. The second Robert Hungerford was the brother of Eleanor (?), not the father, meaning all the ancestors of his wife are not related to our line. Can anyone confirm or correct this?

Eleanor Alice Hungerford b.ca. 1436, in Swanborne, England. She m. John White (14).

Robert Hungerford Lord b. 1431; d. 18 May 1464 (??) in Newcastle; buried in Salisbury, Cathedral, England. He m. Eleanor nes de Moleyns (18), ca. 1441. Children:

Robert Hungerford Lord b. 1405; d. 18 May 1459 (??). Burial in Salisbury, Cathedral, England. He m. Margaret Botreaux (20).

Thank you for posting the list of marriages. This helped me clarify that it was indeed a Harriet Bunce that married George Kenward. D. Willaford & I had suspected it was as Harriet Bunce was living with them in 1860 Ravenna, Portage Co., OH. These ladies may have been the daughters of Richard Bunce/Bunts & Catherine J. LKU (NY>bfr 7/1838 Ellsworth,OH>bfr 6/1860 Portage Co.,OH). This Richard b.~1808 NY is probably the son of Conrad Bunts & Elizabeth Williams, who settled in Ellsworth (then Trumbull & now Mahoning Cos.).

Bonnie, You have a very interesting site. You're obviously very interested in your heritage. With as few Bunce's as there are, I wouldn't be a bit surprised if somehow we are related.

I'm researching the Bunce lineage that has lived in the Chester, PA area since ca. 1860. I have tracked back to my gggrandparents Patrick and Margaret (Manion or Manning) Bunce, both of whom emigrated from Ireland. I believe Patrick, along with brothers James and Thomas (and possible other brothers or cousins Martin and/or Michael originally lived in Brooklyn, New York in 1850. Based on research to date, my best guess is that Patrick's county of origin was County Kerry.

My brick wall is: the parents of my great grandfather, Wesley Bunce. He declared in census records that he was b. OH, 1838-1842. In no record I have found to date was he living with parents - or even one parent. He was a CW vet, I have his file. No clues. I have his marriages, children, everything I need - except his parents and possible siblings. To my knowledge, no siblings, either, listed formally or any other way. I'm inspired, tho, and determined, so I search and wait, maybe they'll find me!

I enjoyed your site and the information that you have on the Mahaffys. I am currently working on a family tree project and can only go back so far. I get to William Mahaffy from Armagh Ireland, but have no dates on him or his wife Mary Ann. Your site goes back really far and I would like to make the connection (if there is one) to William.

I also enjoyed the family crest. It isn't one of those fake ones that you can buy. It also appears that John Mahaffy says that correct spelling for that crest is Mahaffy, so that really got me energized and excited.

Thanks

Joseph Burnap married Tabitha Eaton, daughter of John Eaton(son of William Eaton and Martha Jenkins) and Elizabeth Kendall(daughter of Thomas Kendall and Elizabeth ___).

My descent is from this Joseph's son, Isaac Burnap and his wife, Susanna Emerson. Their daughter Rebecca married David Nichols and they moved to Gardner, MA.

I am also descended from John Walton who married Joseph's daughter, Martha, by his second wife, Mary (Swain)Williams, widow of John Williams of Newbury. Mary's parents were Benjamin Swain and Margaret Pierpont. John Walton and Mary Swain were the parents of Bridget Walton who married Thaddeus Taylor.

Benjamin Swain was the son of Major Jerimiah Swain and Mary Smith. The Jerimiah Swain who married Sarah Burnap, sister of Isaac and of Martha, was a cousin of Mary Swain.

I have been researching the family of John Russell Mehaffey, older brother of James Mehaffey who I believe is Estella May Bunce's Grandfather. I have lived in a century+ brick farmhouse for 30 years and I am trying to find out if the Mehaffeys were the original occupants and builders of my home in Cambridge Ohio. They owned the land from 1836-1868. Finding the tax records and deeds is my current challenge to establish when the house was actually
built. Your site has been very helpful in sorting out the Mehaffey family. My hope is to eventually find early pictures of the home and it's original owners.

My Kansas family is made up of Coffman, Vincent, Padgett, Neal, McGinnis and so many more!

We are very interested in the Mahaffy genealogy as my wife Ann is a direct descendent of Samuel Mahaffay who settled in Illinois about 1830. Samuel probably came from the Dromore or Drumleene area with a brother and a sister and were first known in the central NY area. Also he may have come with his parents.

Ann and I just returned from a month in Ireland where we spent a week in the above area, then 2 weeks in Belfast and Dublen.

We would be very interested in documentation of the early Mahaffys in Ireland and their arrival in the America's.

Started researching the family history in 1973 at Natonal Archives in Washington DC, but was stymied by large gaps in the Census' records (due to fires). So, except for casualy discussions among siblings and an uncle, it got shoved on the (way) back burner until the past 18 months. I'm the oldest child in my immediate family of 6 children and the oldest grandchild of my paternal grandparents (13 grandchildren altogether). My siblings noticed that I had recollections of things that no one except our father's sibling would know, and was urged to try to collect what information I could before everyone from the generation prior to ours is deseased.

My family are descendants of Leonard John and Mary Strife Cole of Carthage, NY (Adirondaks near Watertown and Ft. Drum. Family tree seems to end there. Both Leonard and Mary would have had to been born no later than 1890, as my paternal grandfather, Leonard Joseph (Pop), was born in 1908. (From here to present we've got it down pat, since it really is a no-brainer.)

Leonard Joseph had two brothers, John (NYC) and Jeremiah (MD), and a much older half sister, Elizabeth, whose mother's name is unknown.

Supposedly my family's name is Americanized Dutch (or German), from Koehl, or so I've been told.

I'm very surprised at the number of different lines of Coles there are, especially those from Ireland and England.

The probate record of Erastus E. Payne (s: Estate file, Case #414, LaPorte County, IN Circuit Court records) shows money was given to James W. Payne, Eliza Cole and Asa Bunce among others. Asa Bunce bought land in Rock County, WI from the US Government 1840. In 1848 he bought land in Green Lake County. His residence was listed as LaPorte County, IN at the time. Erastus and Jerusha Payne moved from CT to NY between 1814 and 1816. They then moved to LaPorte County, IN in 1833 (s: History of LaPorte County, IN, page 800.)

The 1850 WI census shows John Bunce with wife and family and an Elizabeth Bunce, age 84 living in the same household. Asa Bunce was listed on the same page as a single man.

By 1850 John Bunce and Family, Elizabeth Bunce and Asa Bunce were all in Berlin, Marquette County, WI. Jerusha Bunce Payne moved to Berlin, WI shortly after the death of her husband in Jan 1850. Jerusha Payne, Elizabeth Bunce wife of Aaron and John Bunce are all buried in Bush Cemetery, Berlin, Green Lake, WI.

Although I don't have first sources that link all these people, I believe that the second sources, taken together, support this Wisconsin branch of the Bunce family as descendants of Thomas Bunce.

I find it interesting that there is a Dr. Henry Payne Bunce. Erastus E. Payne's son, Erastus Henry Payne, was usually referred to as Henry Payne or E.H Payne.

Please feel free to get in touch with me if any of this needs clarification.

I am seeking information on Rene Jacob Bunce of Darlington Md. His father is David Malcom Bunce (also need info. on him). They are both buried in a cemetery in Darlington on High School Rd. (I think that is the name). I dont know the name of the cemetery.

Thank you,
