Hello to all:
I do family research for Monte J. Calkins, descendant of Hugh Calkins. I believe I have the descendancy line correct: HUGH CALKINS (1603-1690)> JOHN CALKINS I (1634-1703)> JOHN CALKINS II (1661-1755)> JOHN CALKINS III (1699-1776)> JOHN CALKINS DR. (1723-1779)> MOSES CALKINS (1757-1837)> JOEL CALKINS (1786-1867)> OLIVER PERRY CALKINS (1816-1854)> FLOYD PERRY CALKINS (1848-1934)> RALPH KYLE CALKINS (1895-1924)> MELVIN DALE CALKINS (1923-1987)> MONTE JOE CALKINS. Floyd Perry Calkins lived in South Dakota for many years and his son Ralph Kyle Calkins was born and died there. I'd like to hear about any new information about any of these folks. Thanks. Martha

Hello Everyone,
I have finished writing my book on Mayflower Descendant Elisha Calkins and Anna Dalrymple and their Descendants. It is currently available on Amazon.com. Here is the link to my book, Elisha Calkins & Anna Dalrymple Descendants by Donovan Hurst:
http://www.amazon.com/Elisha-Calkins-Anna-Dalrymple-Descendants/dp/098569680X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1347241090&sr=8-1&keywords=Elisha+Calkins
You might have to cut or copy and paste the link into your web browser. If that does not work type in Elisha Calkins in the search box on Amazon.com main page. It should be the first listing. This book is over 400 pages with photographs. It is a great reference book for each of your Family's genealogical reference collection. I would like to thank everyone again for helping to contribute information to this work. Without your help this work would not have been possible. Also if you know anyone that might be interested in this book, would you please let them know about it. Thank you for your support.
Sincerely,
Donovan Hurst

I believe that I contacted you several years ago regarding another matter. Now, I am interested in the marriage between Hugh Calkins and Lois Standish which I believe took place around 1706. My reliable DAR grandma always maintained that our family was descended directly from Miles Standish. But from online records it doesn't seem as if Hugh and Lois' marriage produced children. All kids from first wife. Is this true? Do you know of a Standish connection? Thanks Karin

To view the book "Calkins Family in America", go back to the Homepage. About 3/4 of the way down, click on the link "Digital Copy of Calkins Family in America" and yopun will find it.
Actually, I find the digital copy cumbersome to use. If you are just looking for family genealogy connections, you can get all the information in the book, and more, by asking me at the listed e-mail address.

Hi, Tamara: Thanks for signing the Guestbook of the Calkins Family Association. Your statement "I wish I had asked more questions of my grandfather" sounds like about 90% of us. Fortunately, from the geneaslogy database of the CFA, we can unravel the mystery of your Calkins (Corkins) line of descent. We cannot, however, tell all those life experiences that your grandfather could. Nor can we really figure out just when and by whom the spelling changes were made.
But for a record of your line of descent, including your Mayflower connection, could you give a street mailing address to me at kencalkins@prodigy.net.
Regards, Ken Calkins

My Corkins ancestry has been a bit of a mystery. I am starting to unravel it a bit at a time. I truly wish I had asked more questions of my Grandfather Gilbert Corkins, son of Frederick (calkins) Corkins. There was some type of issue between gg and his family that he in turn changed the spelling of the Calkins name further. (Or did it happen prior to my ggrandfather?) This is the question!

To answer Danny's question for all to see, all copies of the first printing of "Calkins Family in America" have been sold. Consideration has been given to publishing a revised version, but no action taken. Publishing rights fot the first edition have been given to Higginson Book Co., Salem, MA. Paperback copies can be purchased from them. Since they do it one copy at a time, the price is pretty high.

Hi Calkins cousins,
I have an old picture of one of your ancestors - Betsey Calkins Hunt, daughter of Elijah Calkins and Mehitabel Heath. Betsey married William Lord Hunt in March of 1798. Among her children were Dr. Jacob Hunt and the Rev. W.W. Hunt, both of whom signed the picture on the back of the frame. Thought you guys might like to take a look at it. The picture is in a large gold frame, and Betsey is perhaps in her seventies. Incidentally, she's cute as a bug.
Send me an email and I'll forward 5 images of the front and back of the picture. I'll also add some additional comments about the dates of her birth and death and see what yall think.

It looks as though I am a descendant of Hugh Calkins and Ann Eaton. They are my ten greats grandparents, if I am counting correctly! In my family it was Calkins until my great, great, great grandma Angelina Calkins married Winthrop Farley, then it went to her daughter Mariett Farley who married Eggleston who then were Eggleston for 2 generations, Then Rachel Eggleston married Thomas Williams Jr, who they had my Grandma Mary Williams who married Rulon Bright, who had my mom, who had me! If anyone has any stories on these people, please email me and share them with me! Thanks!

His son Samuel Beardsley was commander of the "Iron Brigade" of the army of the Potomac during the civil war. Samuel's daughter Mary Catherine Beardsley Prince was married to Governor L. Bradford Prince of New Mexico. They were my great grandparents. I am assuming that Daniel Calkins' lineage can be traced back to Hugh Calkins but I haven't been able to do it yet. Was glad to find this site! Referring to "Calkins Family in America", I am a descendant of Generation 8 Mary Elizabeth Calkins who married Simon Beckstead. Parents Chauncey Ira Calkins and Sarah Kellogg. Mary Elizabeth is buried Mt. Olive Cemetery as are her parents Chauncey & Sarah, as are many other Calkins. Mary Elizabeth's "branch" was not continued in the book (pg 224). Mary Elizabeth and Simon had 10 children, one of which was Matilda Beckstead. Matilda married James Claiborne and had Carrie Claiborne. Carrie married Henry Martin and had James Edward Martin. James Edward was my grandfather. I have one cousin who is also an addict and I have shared this site with her. We just had a Martin 2009 Reunion in Kansas. I told her to keep her eye on this site to see where/when the 2012 Calkins Reunion will be!

Name: Jason Hahl <jthahl@yahoo.com> Date: 2009-05-02 Comments:
In regards to your reunion being this weekend, only a few hours drive away, I found this to be particularly serendipitous. I happened to be at my mother's yesterday and discussing a marble table she owned. Looking underneath the table I read the following painted on the underside of the top 'Mrs. QC Calkins, Protection, NY'. My mother's great grandmother is Julia Calkins, daughter of William Calkins and Elizabeth Rollo (William being the son of Elisha Calkins, as I am sure you know...). I am unsure what the "QC" stands for (if that is, indeed what it reads), but since it is from Protection, NY, I am assuming the table was either Julia or Elizabeth's, and probably 100-160 years old. In case you are interested, my mother is the daughter of Aubrey and Dorothy Woodworth, and Aubrey is the son of Lloyd and Caroline Sweetapple, and Lloyd is the son of Alfred Sweetapple and Julia Calkins.
I have a little more information on Elizabeth, but not a great amount. Good luck with your reunion.

I was pleasantly surprised by your website which is very nicely done and would like to have you send information about the Syracuse, NY Reunion in 2009 to my e-mail address.
My mother was Helen Ruth Buehrer Barley, daughter of Florence J Calkins, wife of Frank J Buehrer of Palmyra, Michigan. Helen was the wife of Arthur Wells Barley of Rochester, New York. (She was a sister to Mildred Irene Buehrer LaBounty Sherry.)(Hence, I am an own cousin to Shirley LaBounty Mulinix, who has also signed your guestbook on 2007-08-23.) Florence Jessie Calkins was born in Palmyra, Lenawee Co., Michigan. Her father was Willard S Calkins 1858-1936, who was born and died in Palmyra, Lenawee County, Michigan, His father was Lorentus S Calkins 1812-1888, born in Cayuga County, New York and died in Raisin Township, Lenawee Co., Michigan. Lorentus and his wife Sophia Hollister were life long members of the Society of Friends (Quakers) both in New York and Michigan. His father was Jared Griswold 1788-1870, who was born in Danby, Rutland County, Vermont and died in Petersburg, Lenawee County, Michigan. His father was David Calkins, 1760-1828, who was born in Rutland Co., Vermont and died near Elba in Genesee Co., New York. David and his son, Jared had bought land in Genesee Co. NY fromthe Holland Land Purchase. My grandmother’s sister, Alice Alena Sophia Calkins with my mother, and myself visited the descended relatives of David Calkins in Genesee Co., New York in 1963. Therefore there are more Calkins cousins still in Genesee Co, New York. My Aunt Alena Calkins did a lot of research in Salt Lake City, Utah as well as Michigan and New York records to create our present family tree. This is information we are sure of and would be interested in piecing together further information back to the David Calkins in Vermont and possibly a link to the New London, Connecticut David Calkins. If anyone visiting your guestbook has info it would be greatly appreciated. Joyce Barley Speciale in Macedon, New York.

Dorothy Secor asks a good question. Since I live in a suburb of Denver, have attended a number of performances at the Ellie Caulkins Opera House, and have worked a lot on Ca(u)lkins genealogy, I have spent considerable time on this question. Ellie is the widow of George Caulkins, who was a Denver attorney, and one of the founders of the Vail ski resort. We have been able to take George's line back three generations to Grosse Pointe, MI. but then get stuck. I am sure he is related to the rest of us, but cannot yet say how.

Hi,
I am researching my Grandmothers family. Her name was Margaret Truslove Calkins prior to being married to my Grandfather Frank Coit Collin in the 30s. I have been able to find her named referenced in a Family Bible for the Ostrum and Platt Families but not much else. Is there a way for me to search your records?
Thanks and regards,
Sam Collin

Hi, cousins. My grandparents were Thomas Calkins, my mother's father, born in Kansas in approx. 1870's, and Alice Calkins (Thomas's brother and my father's mother). That's right, my mother and father were first cousins. Alice Calkins moved at a young age from Kansas with her family to homestead in New Mexico.

If there is another family reunion in CT, or nearby, I would love to know about it. When I was 3 years old (1959) my family moved to CT from California. My father was an only child and we did not have much extended family. It would be great to reconnect.
I have 2 children, Mikhail Alexander and Alisha Mai, 26 and 20 respectively. I also have a brother and sister, both living in California - Christopher and Robin.
It is so great that you have this site and I'd love hearing from anyone.
Most sincerely,

Hello - found this site via work done on ancestry.com. My great-great grandfather Hiram Rude (1831 - 1863) was married to Fannie Calkins, my great-great grandmother, until his death in the Civil War.
I also recently learned that the Calkins House here in Eugene, OR is perhaps named for a relative (I've lived here almost 30 years and just fount this out!) I'm early on in my own work, having been the beneficiary of information from Grace Hellenger and Barbara French of some information on both the Rude and Calkins lines, and would enjoy hearing from others!

Their migratory pattern was to Vermont in the 1700's, then to Upstate New York after the Revolution. My grandfather left for Detroit in the industrial revolution to build cars.

Hi Cuz's,
I'm descended from Stella (Calkins) Carlson, daughter of John Fremont Calkins of 19th c. Illinois. I'm pretty busy with life, as are all of you, but in my free time I'm working on the ancestors. Just got back from a trip to Massachusetts and Connecticut where I found out a lot of information, and got to see some old family homesteads - cousins mostly.
I did see the Calkins Family Association's memorial tablet in the Old Burying Grounds in Norwich & the founders monument in the Post-Gager Burying grounds. That was cool... took pictures for my grandpa to put in his book. It made his day. Esp. since I didn't find much in the way of Calkins gravestones anywhere I went.

I attended the reunion in CO and was totally impressed with the whole event (well, maybe not the noise at the hotel). I met a lot of new cousins and re-established friendships with others. I commend Tom Calkins for all the work he has done on his Calkins database and would like to thank him for his continued interest in the CFA and the DNA program. If anyone has a problem locating an ancestor either Tom Calkins or Ken Calkins are the go-to people.

Hello -
I am trying to locate Caulkins/Calkins connected to my Great grandmother. Her sister, Erminda/Arminda "Minnie" DRAKE married 1st to Joseph Caulkins/Calkins in Marion County, Iowa on 1 Oct 1878. I do not know what happened to Joseph Calkins, but I believe that he and Erminda had at least 2 children together. Erminda married 2nd to my grandmother's husband's brother, Reuben W. Randol 20 Feb 1883 in Marion Co., Iowa. Erminda and reuben both d 1937 & are both buried in Canfield Cem, Polk Co., Iowa. They lived in des Moines for a time. I am very interested in finding Erminda's descendants because they share my DRAKE and my RANDOL lines. My parents are both deceased now, but in 1993, Mama contacted a KEN CALKINS in Golden CO that we suspected was connected. I do not know how to contact him now. Any tips would be appreciated! Thank you, Sally in Springville Alabama

What a wonderful discovery. I am from Dallas Tx and NYC. Born in O'Neill, daughter of Harold Lenard Calkins, of Baton Rouge, La, granddaugher of Chet Calkins of O'Neill Nebraska. I can't wait to start researching. Tom has given me some help several years ago. I was distracted by moving and such. Chet's brother was James Wuerdna sp? from south Dakota. Father was William Riley Calkins. Believe he is buried in Brookings SD but have not proved up this and am not sure of the correct spelling of the great uncles name. Tom believes we all hailed from Western New York and before that Vermont then Norwich Ct. Funny, I now live close enought to those places to go check it out! Where do I find the details on the reunion. Not sure I can attend as daughter is getting married and lots of fun things going on but let me know details and I might try to swing it. Greetings from Muskegon, MI. I am the only son of Raymond & Alice Calkins(both deceased)who came to Muskegon in the 1939 from Wayland MI. My father Raymond Calkins was one of four sons and two daughters whose father was a poor stone mason, married to Effie Hicks. The Calkins homestead farm is in Wayland MI.
I met a wonderful Calkins clan down in the Toledo Ohio area in 1979 or 1980. Their family tree didn't appear to hook up to mine.
Is it possible that my family was named CORKINS at one time, and that those old Irishmen attempted to be English by misspelling the family name.
There also is a large Calkins family here in the Muskegon, MI area, but we do not appear to be part of their lineage.

Have a new computer, and with Minnie's help found the Calkins Association. What a beautiful quilt!, and what an exciting discovery this is. I am descended from Elijah Calkins of Sullivan Co, New York. We know he was born in Connecticut and died in Sullivan Co. in 1829, but have not the connection to Hugh. Can anyone help?

I want to thank all of you who have visited this home page. And especially "thank you" for the compliments on the quilt. It was my pleasure to do it. but it took a lot of members who were thoughtful, creasive, and ambitious enough to send me all those beautiful, unique, colorful, and origanal designs in the blocks. Love.... MInnie

The 2000 reunion church photos brought back many wonderful memories of Hugh's "born about 1600 birthday get together." How fortunate his Calkin's descendents can meet again for another 400th birthday party on the opposite coast and create more family memories!
The attic windows setting is perfect for the beautiful quilt you lovingly put together, Minnie.
Great site! Cousin, Phyl

This quilt is a work of art created from the mind and hands of an artist. Minnie not only quilted our block but also designed it as sewing is not our favorite pastime. We live in Arizona where the general perception is of desert and cactus. That is true in the southern part of the state but in the northern part is the Grand Canyon, lakes and mountains. Minnie used that scenery to illustrate our block and we say thanks, Minnie - you are the greatest!
