Wow, I never realized there were so many of us!! I wonder how we're all possibly related?

As you can see, I'm a third generation James Thomas McElhone. My great, grand father was Thomas McElhone of NY (I believe). I recently saw a picture of him for the very first time, and I was totally taken back b/c I've always wondered what he looked like. He was standing next to my grandfather (was died 6 yrs before my birth), so it appears Thomas was only 5'2"-5'3" range. Shocking b/c my grandfather, my father and myself are all 5'10"-5'11".

I would appreciate any help anyone can provide me in my search to locate and discover my relatives. Currently I do not know much more other than the fact that my great, grandfather Thomas McElhone painted a Boston mural and attended NYU. He had at least 2 children: my grandfather James Thomas McElhone and a daughter, Lillian McElhone (she is now McDowell - married to Earl McDowell) and she resides in New Hampshire.

Take care and God Bless,

James Thomas McElhone III (Georgetown, TX)

Crikey,

There's alot of distant relatives on this site. Unfortunately, I only recognize a couple I know.
I was always told the McElhone name came from Scotland although my forefathers came from Glentys, Ireland where they spelt the name Mcaloone (yeah, Irish spelling!)
Old John McElhone changed the spelling back to original when he arrived in NSW, Australia in the 1860's to disguise the fact that we were Irish Catholics. Nowadays, Catholics own the joint! His son,Old Andy McElhone became the Mayor of Moree, NSW and owned the Hotel up there. Seems appropriate since we claim the Tooheys as relatives and their name is strongly associated with beer.

I saw my father's name in the guest book, Andrew Joeseph McElhone who served with the Royal Australian Engineers during WW2 in New Guinea. Unfortunately, he passed away this year but not before he visited Ireland and visited our ancestial home over there. Actually, the ancestial home is now being used as a BARN and the photos of it make me very glad that Old John managed to claw his way out of there.

As far as I know, there are two main McElhone Families in Sydney and we have never determined how we could be related. Possibly their branch come from another part of Ireland or stayed in Scotland. They claim a former Lord Mayor of Sydney as a relative. Incredibly, two sons from that family turned up at my school around the same time I was there. (What are the chances,eh?) It's an unusual name so I'm sure people thought I was a bit dumb for not knowing how (or even if) we were all related. Funnily enough, one of
their family invited my sister out to a University ball. She quickly dumped him after he introduced to a friend of his. Later, she ended up marrying the friend.

I wonder how many of you have had the surname mispronounced?
I've had numerous occassions and some of the most notable being:
Mcel-alyhome,Machelly-home and even McEl-telephone. I only wish I had written them all down.

I guess I thought McElhone was an unusual name, till I found this site and now ... I'm not so sure.

Regards to all,
Andrew McElhone

Comments:
It's been several years since my husband, John (now deceased) exchanged information with Mrs. Gertie McElhone of Magherafelt, N. Ireland.
The information she forwarded was compiled by her cousin, Robert McElhennon. It revealed an almost certain link to our original American immigrant from Ireland.
I would like to re-establish contact if possible. If someone knows Gertie I would appreciate so much if my contact information would be given to her. Or if you know of a way to see if she has a new address?
The only address I had for her was Traad Drumenagh in Magherafelt. She wrote that she had gone to the Lissen Parrish to check records and it was near her house. If someone has contact information for Lissen Parrish, I would appreciate having that also.
Thanks in advance for your help and consideration!

I recently picked up a book in Borders about the Landscape of Celtic Myth and Spirit, and it made me want to look up my family name. One of my aunt's has allready posted here, but that was back in 99. My earliest known McElhone's are my great grandparents: John and Elizabeth McElhone. I believe they had 12 children..... not exactly sure on that, but my grandmother is Anne. She came to America in 1953 by way of San Antonio, TX. I know that two of her sisters, Elizabeth and Mary(?) passed away earlier this year. I believe that my grandmother only has one brother left in Ireland now, out of I believe three(?). Believe me, with as many cousins and aunts and uncles I have over there, I can barely keep them all straight, and only really the ones I've met. My grandmother was the only one out of her immediate family to move to Ireland, but I believe she had some Aunts and Uncles here when she moved. I will try to find out more later.
John and Elizabeth McElhone, Carndaisy(according to my Aunt Debbie), Co. Derry, Ireland. (great grandparents)

I have a copy of a photo taken in Philadelphia. The photo is signed & dated - "To my cousin Rosanna Malone from J. McElhone" - and the date is 2 July 1882. The photo is of a young woman. The photo was discovered and scanned by a cousin of mine who lives in Magherafelt, Derry. There are a couple of other Philly photos as well, but not of the same woman and with no names or dates.
Now then. Rosanna could be a) my ggrandmother Rose O'Neil Malone, born ca. 1835 Derry; or b) my great-aunt Rose Ann Malone, daughter of Rose O'Neil & John Malone. Rose Ann was born in 1871.
I'm looking for a connection between the O'Neils and the McElhones or the Malones and McElhones. The only link I have is a baptismal sponsor of one of my great-uncles in 1867. A Thomas McElhone and a Jane O'Neil were his sponsors.
Anyone have any ideas?

My Mum was Catherine McElhone (3 Sisters + 1 Brother ) before she married.

Her parents were Nellie (Ellen) McElhone and Patrick McElhone.

Who is your earliest known McElhone John McElhone, b.c. 1820, Ireland
Comments:
I'm doing research for my cousin who is a McElhone. John McElhone was his 2nd great grandfather. I found him in the 1860 census for Philadelphia with his wife Mary and son James, also a Hugh McElhone, b.c. 1835. Is this Hugh who died in 1872? Was he John's younger brother?

James McElhone was born in March 1853 in Philadelphia. He married Linda (?) who was born in New Jersey in July 1864. They had seven children: Anna, b. June 1883, James, b. November 1885, John, b. November 1888, Mabel, b. January 1892, Henry (Harry), b. September 1893, Bertha, b. March 1896, and Frank Earl, b.c. 1902. James married Sadie and had three daughters, Anna, Elsie, and Helen. John married Mary and had four children, John, Harry, Anna, and James (my cousin's family). Mabel married a Mr. Hayes and had a daughter Rita and possibly a daughter Kathleen. She was widowed in 1920.

Any information on this family would be appreciated.

Who is your earliest known McElhone Francis McElhone, my Grandfather
Comments:
My Grandfather was Francis McElhone, who worked on the railroad throughout the Northeast and Northwest. He married Hazel Margaret Dunn, in Waynesburg, PA. Hazel died in 1985. They had 5 sons, Francis, who turned up MIA during WW II, Charles, who died before he was 5 years old, George Washington, my father who moved from Waynesburg, PA to Cleveland, Ohio and was a line-a-type operator at the Cleveland Plain Dealer. My father died in 1984, from cancer. They also had a son, Paul Donald, who lived in Chicago, Ill., and died in 1990 (or so), from lung cancer. There was a daughter, who was adopted out to another family and given the name Pearl (the last name escapes me.) There is one living son left, Robert, who lives near Wichita, KS. He is retired military and served 2-3 years in Vietnam. We have no idea what ever happened to the father (Francis0 or the son, Francis. Each member of this family had children, only one boy carries the name at this point, Rodney McElhone, who's last know whereabouts was in Chicago, Ill. I wonder if there is anyway that my Grandfather could have started another family, because he left my Grandmother, Hazel, back in 1945 or so and never came back to Waynesburg, PA. We think he was last seen in New York or Canada. Anyone knowing of a Francis (middle name I forget) McElhone let me know. Thankyou. LA

Where did you find out about our page? Searched for Seacatt info
Who is your earliest known McElhone I don't know McElhone, off hand.
Comments:
Thanks for the info on the Seacatt family tree, which is the branch of the tree, I belong. Writing about trees reminds me of an incident. I was driving at rush hour with my four little grandsons in the back of my van. They were making entirely too much noise. I scolded them. Later, when I was out of the traffic and driving down a street lined with Weeping Willow trees. I appologized to the boys for getting angry with them. I explained how hard it is to drive when the traffic is so bad, and they are wrestling, yelling, making noise. I said it all makes me just fall out of my tree, an expression they were use to hearing our family say. My five year old grandson, asked;"What kind of a tree is it Grandmother?" Looking at the Weeping Willow trees on each side of the street, I replied "Weeping Willow". The boys wanted to know what a Weeping Willow looked like. I pointed to the Weeping Willows. The youngest grandson thought for a minute, observed the Weeping Willow, and its branches, then said; "No wonder you fall out of it all the time."
Here is to the hope that we have a sturdier family tree to share, with stronger branches. Now, where is your branch located, and how far from my branch?

My grandmother was takin into the care of a Mrs Smith around age 4 - my grandmother believed this woman to be here mom, but at age 12-13 my grandmother was returned to the orphanage and was there til she was 18. I have had no luck so far tracing mary or any information on my grandmother - any suggestions or ideas would be great !

I guess I signed this book about a year ago and have been researching the McElhone and O'Neill name simultaneously. I went to Ballynagarve where I was able to visit the home of my grandmother Margaret McElhone daughter of James. I have met so many wonderful relatives in Ireland and hope to return again soon. I have some blanks in the McElhone tree but not as many as I once did thanks to all those who helped me fill them in. So if anyone out there is looking up this family (I realize James McElhone is a very common one) in the Ballynagarve/Magherafelt area of Derry, feel free to contact me.

Arthur Joseph McElhone (b. 1868, Sydney, d.1946)Was my great grandfather. He was Lord Mayor of Sydney in 1935. I was born in 1952 and have very fond memories of his wife Eva Catherine Walshe who died in 1961 or 1962. His youngest daughter Enid Nella McElhone was my maternal grandmother. She married James Throsby of Throsby Park Moss Vale NSW. Their only surviving daughter Elizabeth Gay Hamilton Throsby (b.1931)is my mother. She married James Barry Greer (my father)who died in 1963 and she later went back to her maiden name. My mother, Gay, has much more information about the family than I do and is very interested in the family history. She can be contacted by email at shelleyg@pnc.com.au Thankyou for maintaining this interesting web page
Yours sincerely, Virginia Greer.

Hi Barry,

I was just browsing through our guest book and came across you. I am not sure if I have written to you or not.
My gggrandparent's were also from Cookstown, Northern Ireland. (John Mulhone/McElhone married Bridget McElhone)

Their son (my ggrandfather-James McElhone went to Scotland) I am presuming to escape the potato famine
He first went to Port Glasgow, then onto Renfrew. By the 1881 census there was a Bernard McElhone also living in the house. I am presuming this was a cousin, Bernard had a daughter Margaret. At the time of Margaret's wedding which was in Greenock, a sibling of my ggrandfather was a witness to the wedding.

If you think there is a link, would love to hear from you.
Regards,
Val Gray (nee McElhone)

Since signing this last year, I have learned a bit more of the McElhone family of Magherafelt. James andMargaret Kearney had the following children: Sarah Virginia b. 1886, Margaret b. 1888, Brigid, Susan, James, John and Peter who married Katie Halferty. Margaret, Sarah Virginia and John emigrated to Montreal and susan and Brigid to the US, Peter stayed in Ireland and I think James came to America and then returned to Ireland. I don't appear to have any connection to any of the McElhone trees online so if any one is related to any of those listed, I would love to hear from you.

due to the similarity in names, we've always wondered what, if any connection there might be. The McElhoses (ours, anyway) came to the U.S. from Ballwattick/Dervock, Co. Antrim, N.Ireland, originally from Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland.

Who is your earliest known McElhone Margaret McElhone, my grandmother
Comments:
I am just starting to look into my geneology. My grandmother Margaret McElhone was born in Magherafeldt some time around 1890. She married Daniel O'Neill. I would be interested to know if she is the one listed in Generation 3 under John and Susan. I believe my great grandmother's name was Susan. They Maggie and Dan moved to Montreal and raised their family of 5 boys and 1 girl there. My dad was the second youngest boy. I am really interested in knowing other McElhone relatives in the Magherafeldt area as I will be visiting next year. However, I am also interested in learning about my paternal Irish family the O'Neill's of Armagh and was hoping I could learn something from the McElhones. Thanks.

Well just to let you know Roger, this guest book really works. I emailed the people looking for the same people. Turns out she is a 2nd cousin. Marion's grandfather was a brother to my grandfather. She has filled me in about his siblings as well. Also they were living in the same town, as
we were back in 1973. How uncanny is that -coming from Singapore. To cut a long story short,2nd cousins are meeting
my parent's next week. They are meeting half way from where each party live. Another find another 2nd cousin is on the
Internet and had a email from her this morning -haven't been
in touch for nearly 29 years!
THANK GOODNESS FOR THE INTERNET!!
This cousin Marion, Rachael and I are working together to sort out the Lissan's. Apparently my great Aunts and Uncles used to go to Ireland regularly to visit relations!
Think Joe is emailing you with his lot.We will get there yet!
This is very exciting stuff~
Hope more McElhone's come to the page!!

Hi Roger. Me again. I went looking for Cookstown McElhone's yesterday , and I got a "not available". I supidly did not copy to my file since I thought I could always get it on the McElhone Page.Do you still have it in any form I can store? This may mean sending it in the clear, assuming it's still available. In any case, thanks for any consideration. Joe

HI Roger & Lorna - Been researching McElhannon surname for now on to 9 years - Have been told that it's spelling "MIGHT BE" a take off from several other Irish surnames, including McElhone. Stilll looking into this -- Like the way you are doing your web pages - one of these days I may get "brave" and try and put a site up on "McELHANNON".

I am doing the genealogy on my Dad's side. (Gerald Joseph McElhone) He was the son of Joseph Clarence McElhone who was the son of Joseph McElhone and Kate Olmstead. The number of children they had was eight. The genealogy on your page only lists 3 children. Included should be Joseph, Frank, Mary, Dora, Nellie and Winnie. I will provide the dates, once I have these dates confirmed. Your assumption is correct re: George being the son of Joseph. George was my Great Uncle.
