What surnames are you researching? Finley
What do you like best about the site? All
Comments:
My grandparents lived on Highway 6 directly across from the funeral home (cannot remember the name of it). They were Robert and Nannie Lou (Thomasson) Finley. Their children were Ruth, Dorothy, Rebecca, Mary, Bernice, Jones and Robert. They are all dead now. My mother was Mary. My grand parents and a few other relatives are buried in the Pontotoc City cemetary. I am not sure this is the correct name, but it is what we have always called it. My grandfather was a contractor and poured some (or all) of the sidewalks downtown and somehwere are his initials in the concrete. The city never paid him for his work, but I guess I'll just forget about that!! I have always loved Pontotoc and have many old pictures that might help people in their search. My grandmother was very active in DAR and Eastern Star. My grandmother and my aunt Dorothy moved from Pontotoc in about 1957 and they were the last family to live there. My aunt Ruth Finley (Puya) always came back to her high school reunion every year or so until her death in 1997. I have several old yearbooks and scrapbooks from Pontotoc. Pontotoc has a special, special place in my heart and if I can help with any info, please let me know.

What surnames are you researching? Christopher Columbus and Lucinda Morgan
Comments:

I have just begun my search! Christopher Columbus Morgan and wife Lucinda were my great grandparents. I found that she was buried at Pontotoc. I know they owned land there until about 1932 when he died in Denton, Texas. They had a son who still lived there. His name was Will Morgan. I don't know his wife's name. Another son was D H Morgan who went to Oklahoma City, OK and my grandfather, Ollin Lawrence Morgan who went to Denton County Texas. I know Lucinda died in 1929. My brother and I hope to go to Pontotoc this year looking for information. We don't believe there were any children from either Will or Dan so information has been difficult to find. I would like to know if there are newspaper articles available from the very early 1900's. Also birth and death records and marriage records. If anyone has any information, I would appreciate any help.

What do you like best about the site? Pioneer Families, Rosters of Civil War Soldiers, History, Cemeteries
Comments:
I was well pleased with what I saw and was very pleased to read Pioneer Families: Abernethys and this is the first site that I have seen where I could read the alphabetized listed of Civil War Soldiers. I continue to look for my Bill Williams gggrandfather who lived in Redlands in Chickasaw County but supposedly joined the 41st Infantry, Company F (Pontotoc Grays). I have found another William J. Williams, a younger man who had no children, and whose wife was Ruthie but cannot find one who married a Mary Jeans, sometimes listed as Cunningham since her step father was a Cunningham, She was asister of David Jeans from Redlands, Chickasaw County who died from a gunshot wound while hunting after the Civil War was over.

I am also interested in finding the maiden name of Eliza J. Roberts who was married to Geo W. Roberts with a post office of Tallibenela, Pontotoc County. Their daughter, Medora E., was the second wife of my grandfather Theopilus Rankin and the mother of my grandmother, Myrtilla E. E. Rankin, whose first huband was Ludovic Porter, and second husband, William Rufus Burris.

Our families moved from South and North Carolina and settled in and around Sherman, Ms. I lived in Sherman until I was 17. The school in Sherman closed and lots of families moved out of the area. I do still have relatives in Pontotoc, Union and Lee counties. I have copies of the headstones of the family of John T. Gorey and Be,inda Sims. They settled in the Cherry Creek area around 1850...they had come to Ms. by covered wagon shortly after their marriage in Newberry distict, S.C. The cemetary is listed on your site as "Gorey cemetary". But after visiting the cemetary a month ago and talking to the people that live nearby....I believe it to be the site of the old Poplar Springs cemetary. I also found a broken headstone of a female Gambrell born in 1802 and died in 1870. We were told that there had been numerous graves in this area years ago by none are maked as of now. I will email pictures to this website of the 11 headstones of my relatives as well as that of the Gambrell woman I also have copies of the Albert Galington and Maryann Eliza Allbritton family Bible This Bible was in the possesiion of my greatgrandfather, John Albert Gory and his wife, Lucilla Long Gory, until their death. John Albert changed the last name spelling from Gorey to Gory. Hope this info can assist someone. If anyone would like further info on any of the families we are researching, please send me an email. I would also like to receive info if you have any on my ancestors.

He was married four times, first to Missouri Harden, Catharine Harden, Melissa Wood, and then to my husbands g-grandmother Evaleena McCarter. They are all buried in Pontotoc County. I was fortunate to find some of James (Jim) grandchildren, but they didn,t have any info concerning his parents. He had 2 nieces named Arnie and Arlie. Does anyone have information they would share? Thanks so much!

Comments:
I came to this site looking for information about the Thomas and Lorana Harvey family listed in the 1850 census. These were my 3G grandparents as were Jorial and Mary Farrar who moved to Pontotoc County in 1840 and lived at Buttermilk Springs, Lafayette Springs and Thaxton (same place but the name changed). Their son, William Clark Farrar married Elizabeth Harvey and are my GG Grandparents. Their daughter, Mary Elizabeth married Dr. Montgomery Campbell Thaxton and became my G Grandparents. Their 8th child, Nettie, born in Thaxton was my grandmother. I am interested in information about all of them, but I have quite a lot about the Farrars. All that I can be sure of about the Harveys is that they came to Pontotoc from Alabama around 1843 and are listed in the 1850 census. I have not found them in Alabama or after the 1850 census. Elizabeth married William Farrar 11 January 1857 in Pontotoc Co. Dr. Thaxton came to Pontotoc before 1876 and roomed with the Farrars for a time then married Mary Elizabeth in 1876. The Thaxtons and Farrars moved to Texas in 1901 for health reasons.

Dear Sirs

My name is Fabris G.Luca,39 years old.I'm studying, and loving Elvis Presley since I was 11 years old.

I'm an Elvis researcher expecially on the early days.I particularly like the Louisiana Hayride,Opry,Saturday Night Country Style days,Opry shows and so I started doing researches on this and trying to meet and interview as
much people as I could.
Mainly all these researches are in relation to a book/CD project for the Elvis fan club network I've been asked to help. It's a 3/4 CD 200 pages book about Elvis stay at SUN records done by Ernst Jorgensen which I'm now helping
detailing the period from July of 1954 through the end of 1955.Ernst is BMG chief at Elvis music archive.
The book will consist of more than 400 early photos - half of them previously unpublished. It's not an attempt
of once again write the story of Elvis Presley, but more a collection of information, photos, memorabilia and stories shared by fans who where there at the time. The book will not deal in gossip or other unpleasant material
it's all about the innocence of the time and the impact of Elvis' music.
We are trying to document every single show Elvis did, and we have come fairly close. So I'm looking for photos, recordings from Louisiana Hayride or
Opry,or any live radio gig or interview .... ANYTHING IS WELCOME FROM THE 50s!!
And Elvis played the Mississippi area a lot during 1955 but we have very few info and no photos at all!
If you want I could send a short note on the focus of my actual search.
Have you ever come across people owning early Elvis gigs recordings or photos?
And besides if you know any local historian or long time residents that might help.....

Hope to hear from you soon and that this is not too much of an intrusion.

Sincerely yours

Fabris G.Luca

Comments:
I have been looking at this site for the last several months and no updates have been made. Hasn't there been any new information to post in that time?

My Ayres family found that the land sold to them by the Chickasaw Indians and the US Government was not legal since the President of the United States hadn't signed off on it. I imagine that happened to more than one family in Pontotoc County. If anyone has any information on this I would love to hear about it. Eli Ayres took it all the way to the Supreme Court. This went on for over 20 years and when it was finally settled it apparently was not to his advantage.

Any updates on this would be greatly appreciated.

I have just started researching my ancestors. I was looking for my grandfather,James Alexander Wells, whom I never had the wonderful opportunity to know. I just discovered that he was from Pontotoc County and had 11 siblings. I know he married Mamie Emma Wall form Hickory, Mississippi on August5, 1908. My father was his son, and his father's family was never discussed with us. My grand-father was tragically killed in an automobile accident, in 1947, that involved my father, Morelle Wells. My grand-mother, Mamie Wall Wells, came to live with us at that time. It must have been to keep in touch with the Wells family. This has been an enjoyable experience actually
seeing "your family's" names in print; it has given me a
sense of history. Thank you so much, Janet W. Richardson

I am looking for information on Eli & Caroline Ayres & Family who were in Pontotoc Co from about 1836 to 1856. Eli purchased his land during the early 1830's (the Chickasaw Cession) from the government and the Chickasaw's. He donated land to the Poplar Springs Baptist Church there. Also looking for the James Johnson's from Poplar Springs (James & Matilda, daughter Eliza, son James and his wife Evaline Ayres). Caroline Ayres parents were William H. & Mary Jane Kirkwood Wilson, who are buried in the Wilson Cemetery. I am also looking for information on Benson J. Osborne who married into the Ayres family. The Ayres and Johnson's moved to Texas about 1856, finally settling in Kaufman County, Texas. Matilda Johnson remained in Poplar Springs, see 1860 Census. Any information on anyone of these people would be appreciated.

It would help if we could have a way to arrive at entries that address a particular name being sought or notes about that name. (e.g. Pannell or Waters) without scrolling through the whole site. Then any new entries would be evident at a glance. May not be possible but would be a dandy addition. Thanks Elaine

My grandmother, Beulah Mae Roberts (Sisk)of Nettleton and Amory, MS, attended Chickasaw College for Girls in 1910. I have her copy of the 1910 "Valhalla" yearbook -- it is in VERY fragile condition, with several torn or missing pages. However, I have been able to scan several of the pictures, and they did very well. Does anyone have additional information about Chickasaw College from around that time, particularly 1910? If your ancestor attended the school in 1910, perhaps her picture is in the book. I'll be glad to check the yearbook and let you know. I do hope that someone in the Pontotoc area has more information and pictures from the school during 1910. ~~ Thanks for such an interesting site -- and good luck with it!

I am looking for George W. Noland/Nolan/Nolen who was living in Pontotoc Co, MS between 1850 -1880. He was the son of William Noland Jr. and Harriet Pullin. George was born in ca 1824 in Ga. George W. Noland married Mary "Polly" Ann Nix in 1845. George obtained custody of his brothers Jarvis M. Noland and James W. Noland after their mother died.
George's wife Mary Ann (Nix) Noland married J. W. Buchanan on Nov 5, 1866 in Pontotoc Co, MS. From the 1880 census it seems she took in several of her married children and grandchildren. Also looking for a death date for George and where he is buried.

You have done an excellent job on this site. What you need is more help from volunteers who actually live in that area. I would dearly love to find out where my great grandparents, Randolph Johnson (died in 1857) and Elizabeth (Ashby) Johnson (died after 1880) are buried. Is there anyone who is transcribing the Sherman Cemetery? How about the Black Zion Cemetery? Thanks for everything! Sue (Johnson) Howard

What surnames are you researching? Charles P. DeJournette and daughter Alice Dejournette
Comments:
hello! my great-grandmother is Alice DeJournette, who later in life married a Dr. James Wiley. my great-grandmother was one of three daughters of Charles P. DeJournette, who operated a large cotton gin and saw and grist mill in Pontotoc County, Mississippi. She had two sisters, Emma and Ellen. Emma married H. L. McCharen (although I have a record of a different spelling for Mr. MCharen, McCharran, from a copy of an article from The Sentinel newspaper dated April 28, 1899. this article is very interesting, I suppose it was newsworthy because my great-great grandfather Charles P. DeJournette had just recently acquired the "latest improved Munger-Pratt machinery, and is largely patronized, 966 bales having been ginned in it last season. At present it can gin 24 bales per day but it can be improved to a capacity of 30 bales per day. In connection with it the firm has a cotton seed huller and grist mill, and also owns the cotton platform at the depot..."

this article then notes the my great-great grandfather Charles P. DeJournette has three daughters by his first wife. the article names Emma and Ellen because their husbands, H. L. McCharen and Barney Brady, were in business with Mr. DeJournette. my great-grandmother, Alice, is not mentioned by name; she married country doctor James Wiley.

I am just curious if there is any more information on my great-great grandfather Charles P. DeJournette. this article I have from the April 28, 1899 The Sentinel only mentions that Mr. DeJournette was born in Cabarrass County, North Carolina, and came to Mississippi in 1873 and that he had commenced business in Toccopola, Mississippi, in 1883, where he erected a grist and saw mill and a cotton gin. "This plant he sold in 1890, when he removed to Pontotoc and built the gin now in operation here."

Can you shed any more light on my great-great grandfather Charles P. DeJournette? all I know is that he originated from Cabarrass County, North Carolina. my great-aunts always talked about how their grandfather's family had actually originated in, and emigrated from, France.

I thank you very much!

Sincerely,

Calvin Brady Ennis

WHY BUSH REALLY INVADED IRAQ !

During the Reagan administration, CIA Director William Casey initiated the recruitment of Islamic fundamentalists from around the world to go to Afghanistan to fight in the decade-long guerrilla war against the Soviet military intervention. They received training in terrorist tactics, including the planting of bombs, from US intelligence agents. This was the milieu out of which Osama bin Laden—himself a collaborator with the CIA in Afghanistan—recruited the initial forces for his Al Qaeda organization. After the Soviet withdrawal from Afghanistan, many of these fighters, most of them Arabs, were allowed entry into the United States as a reward for their services in the war.

In the aftermath of the Persian Gulf War, some of these Islamic fundamentalists turned against the US government, bombing the World Trade Center in 1993.

Al Queda then carried out a number of other terrorist acts against US targets overseas most notably the bombing of two U.S Embassies in East Africa and the attack on the U.S.S Cole before carrying out their murderous attacks on 9/11.

That an organization like Al Qaeda would emerge after the CIA's unbelievable stupidity in arming and training more than 35,000 (indirectly over 100,000) anti - western Islamic fundamentalists fighters, you would think should not really come as such a surprise. Seemingly however it caused great angst and bewilderment amongst those imbeciles who actually were responsible for this policy in the first place. I find it incredible that so many Reaganites still can't understand why the rabid dog that they spawned has turned around and bit the hand that fed it.

Further it has now become clear (with no WMD's being found) that rather than face up to the truth behind 9/11 these short sighted ideologues have instead sought to 'pull the wool over the eyes' of the American public by manipulating George W Bush (whose father was one of the chief architects of this evil in the 1980ies) to invade Iraq, by claiming a link between Saddam and 9/11.

One thing for certain is that whilst his baathist regime was very disagreeable, it however clearly had nothing to do with 9/11, being both strongly secular (supported by many Christian Iraqis) and very anti Wahabist (ie. anti Al Qaeda).

Basically the bottom line is we went to war on a lie - to cover up what must be one of the biggest foulups in modern history.

BLOWBACK

This phenomenon of former CIA-backed guerrillas using their US training to attack American targets has become known as “blowback.ö

Technically a 'blowback' (what we call a right stuff up) is the term that the CIA uses to describe a situation when some operative, a terrorist, or some situation that they've created gets out of their control and comes back to haunt them. It's a situation where the scientist (Frankenstein) creates a monster that "blows back" on its creator. Manuel Noriega, Saddam Hussein, Osama bin Laden are all pretty good examples of blowback. They were all nurtured for many years by the CIA, the US military or military intelligence. They all eventually "blew back."

A good link to review this phenomenon is given in

We will never be able to compete against your 30 billion in agricultural subsidies and your incredibly unfair and frankly corrupt corporate culture.

There are a lot of my family members who are buried here, most everyone on this side, that I have no idea who they were due to my age at the time of there demise. My immediate family that I do know however, spelled Aron with just one 'a'. (Herman-grandfather, Imogene-grandmother, Rhonda-mother, H. Carl-uncle, Carlas-first cousin, and my great-grand parents) This much I am aware of. I don't know how far back it was that the 'a' actually got dropped. Thank you for your work and dedication to the archives, I may actually be able to piece it all together oneday.

I am most pleased to find this website. I plan to visit Pontotoc in June to find information on my family's roots. My grandfather, Theophilus Winfield Manahan, married his first wife, Mary Henrietta Manahan, there. They had 5 children. Mary Henrietta died at the birth of their son, Norton, who died about a month later. My grandfather then left to join his parents (John Franklin Manahan) who had already left Mississippi for Texas. But that is all I know. The lookup service is wonderful to help fledgling researchers like me. Thanks for a great website!

I am so glad some of the folks wrote their stories before it was too late. I feel like I would know the towns and the people if I were dropped in the middle of the county.

Thank you, all!

I am just starting to look. My ggrandmother and her brother were born in your county, according to relatives and emails on the web, but haven't confirmed, yet. M.E.(or M.A.) Whitlow, born in July 1861 and Thomas Newton Whitlow. Someone in the family made our family be called Black Dutch (at least in the 1950's). My ggrandfather's name was Jonathan G. Magouirk??? and he was born in MS or TN approx. 1860. I have been wondering if Major was the father of Mollie and she was illegitimate because it would have been in-between wives. Do you know anything about it?

Great site so far and easy to understand.

Your Census is nothing but a bunch of names, no more. The old way, you may have had to search for someone. once you found that person you could tell who went with what family. once I found a family I was searching for I would the page no. down and could use that no to relookup or pass the information alone to someone. Now you have a bunch of names and you don't know what familes go with who. That is fine for someone looking for a name and then going to go to Pontotoc or buying a census record and then look up the family , but what about those people who live away and don't have access to the census records.Your transcribers should have left the family's together.or at least repost the old census so once someone found a name they were looking for they could search the census and connect the family.

What surnames are you researching? Allen, Weaver, Middleton
Comments:
I have never been to Pontotoc County to research, but hope to come this summer. Does the
library have a genealogical collection? My Hugh Roy Allen is on the 1840 Pontotoc County
census, but was in Ark. in 1850. My Thomas Weaver is on the school census as a parent in
1890. I don't know when he came. He is from Itawamba County. My Middletons are on the
1840 census and were in Itawamba Co. in 1850 or at least some of them were. Are there
any other places to search besides the courthouse and library? Thanks Martha bone.
