Hi, I have an unanswered question (of many) on the Hughs family:
on the 1850 Caswell Co. Census I found:
Hughs John age 49 B Virginia
Harriett P. age 41 B Rockingham Co
Will J. (?) age 23 B Caswell Co.
John M. age 18 B Caswell Co.
We descend thru John M. and I have most, if not all on this family. My focus now is on Will. I'm almost certain that his name could be William. In Caswell Co. Bastardy bond book page 51 there is a listing for:
Harrett P. Hughs date 1827 Bondsman, Andrew Montgomery- Bondsman, William Montgomery - Bondsman, Hugh CobbJul.
This most certainly is Will, since he was 23 in 1850 b Ca 1827. Does any one know anything about Harrett P. Hughs, Will J. Hughs or Andrew Montgomery?

Name: John Pass <juanmalpaso@gmail.com> Date: 2009-07-23 Caswell Co. Surnames Pass Comments:
In an attempt to locate the parents of Nathaniel Pass Sr, I am attempting to understand the formation of counties in order search in the correct location for records. I have come upon a question regarding a seeming move of the Pass family around 1780. Nathaniel Sr was born in 1732 in VA in what was to eventually become Halifax county. Halifax County VA wasn't formed until 1752 so Nathaniel Sr's birth records (if any) would most likely not be in Halifax County records. In 1759 Nathaniel Sr married Alsey McGinnis Holloway in Halifax Co VA which is indeed noted in Halifax County records. However, in 1779 it appears that Nathaniel Sr is given a land grant in Caswell County North Carolina. There is a lot of circumstantial evidence that would seem to indicate that he moved from Halifax County VA to Caswell Co NC. However, I have an alternate theory that I'd like to inquire about.
Nathaniel Pass Sr died near Milton in the Northeastern part of Caswell County, NC. This is very near the NC/VA
border. In 1728-1733, Col. William Byrd and others conducted a survey of the VA/NC border, and on this web site: http://www.oldhalifax.com/county/VaNcBorder.htm, it says, "Much to Virginia's surprise, a 'great quantity of land and numbers of families' were placed in North Carolina that before had been under Virginia." And then in 1780, Nathaniel Pass Sr appears in Caswell County records, after having been given a "Land Grant" in Caswell Co.
It is my supposition that this "Land Grant" was just a matter of correcting official land records. In essence,
it wasn't a move at all but a correction of which state
had jurisdiction to collect taxes and such and the "Land
Grant" was just a matter of entering Nathaniel Sr's true ownership of the land in Caswell Co, NC's official records.
Given that the location of his death is near Milton which is itself near the state border it would seem likely to me that he wouldn't have moved this short of a distance.
Can anyone confirm or refute this? Or perhaps point me
in a good direction for further research?
Thank you!

STERLING DIXON:
REVOLUTIONARY WAR VETERAN
DISMISSED FROM THE SOCIETY OF FRIENDS?
MARRIED THEE TIMES?
HIS KNOWN DESCENDANTS
SURNAMES: DIXON; HARLAN; TERRAL; STEPHENS; KING
Sterling Dixon once resided in Granville County, North Carolina, where he had served with the Patriots of the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War.
His descent was of the original settlers of the religious faith, The Society of Friends that immigrated from County Armagh, Parish of Sego, Ireland to that of New Castle County, Pennsylvania, British Colony. Henry Dixon and his wife, Rose Harlan responded to a speech given by William Penn, upon which they converted, before becoming immigrants to his colony.
It is my belief that Sterling Dixon may have been born, perhaps his parents had been residents of either Randolph County, Chatham County, Orange County or Alamance County of the North Carolina British Colony; at this time, it would be speculating as to whom may have been his parents.
Mr. Dixon may have married more than three or more times; his daughter, Phebe Dixon was possibly of the first marriage; she was born circa 1790 in either the Marlboro District or Newberry District of South Carolina; she married John Terral, the son of Edward Young Terral and his wife, Artilissa Stephens, circa 1812 ; his birth date has been recorded as 22 June 1784.
The 1790 United States Census of Newberry County, South Carolina enumerated Mr. Dixon and his family, as well as others of the Dixon Surname; there were members of the Edward Young Terral Family that were recorded in the 1790 Enumeration of the, as well.
In the 1830 Federal Census Enumeration of Saint Tammany Parish, Louisiana, Sterling Dixon II and his brother, Spias Dixon were recorded as residents, as well as that of John King, a brother of his wife, Lydia King.
As to how John Terral and his wife, Phebe Dixon became acquainted, there has not been any documentation at this time.
My Terral-Dixon Forbears were some of the earliest settlers that had removed from South Carolina to the Mississippi Territory.
Spias Dixon, a son of Sterling Dixon may have been born in the vicinity of Columbia County or Richmond County of Georgia; perhaps he was of the first marriage, if so, both he and his older sister, Phebe Dixon may have been of Cherokee or Cheraw Indian Descent; many descendants, including that of my forbear, were known to have exhibited black hair and dark features that would have been characteristic of Indian Descent. Spias Dixon married Lydia King some time prior to his having become enumerated in the 1840 United States Census of Jones County, Mississippi. Lydia King was born in Newberry County, South Carolina, as her family became established there some time before her birth.
It is my belief that Sterling Dixon may have been officially dismissed by The Society of Friends because of his involvement in the cause of the Continental Army of the Patriots during the Revolutionary War, as well as his having owned slaves. There is a possibility that Mr. Dixon may have been tolerated by the religious leaders for many years because of his continued practice to settle amongst those of The Society of Friends.
Spias Dixon was recorded in many of the United States Census Enumerations from 1830-1870; in Mississippi, he was found in the earliest of the Census Returns with his sister, Mrs. Phebe Dixon Terral in both Jones County and Jasper County of Mississippi; both had received Federal Land Patents prior to the War for Southern Independence.

I am interested in the family of Virginia Elizabeth Moore. She was born at Locust Hill, Caswell County, N.C. on August 20, 1850. She was the daughter of Alexander Moore and Mary. Reportedly, Mary's maiden name was Mary Lee Carter. I have been told that the family lived in or was associated with the Moore House (Annie Y. Gwynn House). Family history says Mary Moore died and Alexander Moore remarried. From what I have been told, he later died and his second family inherited his estate. My mother, Virginia's granddaughter, was told that when Alexander died the Swepson family wanted to adopt Virginia. Reportedly, her guardian, a Poteat, did not approve. In any case, Virginia moved to Spring Hope to live with her sister Eudora Moore Owen. I would like to find out more about the families of Alexander Moore and Mary (Lee Carter?) Moore.

I am also a descendant of William Farrar and Cecily Jordan Farrar.
I'm thinking the Pierces and Farrars have a connection as far back as the Jamestown colony, only because Cecily stayed for a time with Captain William Pierce before she married Bailey. Now I wonder if Philip is somehow connected to William. Can anyone help me with this?

Researching Thomas MILES, a Rev. War Vet. arrived in Caswell Co. NC in April 1774 with a very pregnant wife, Nanny PATTERSON, and they needed shelter.
They had married in February of 1774 and moved here to avoid being shunned in Cumberland Co. VA where Thomas lived with his step father John Brown.
I assumed he arrived and lived near other MILES relatives in the county till he could get established, perhaps siblings or cousins
He left the area about 1800 with some married children and lived in the Nashville area.
I would like any information available about Thomas in Caswell Co. Is there information on land sales still available from that time period.

I am looking for a birth registry entry for a Kenneth O. Scott (b.18 Apr 1913). His death certificate says only that he was born in "Virginia". However, I think otherwise. His parents were Andrew Wilson and Alice Scott. They met and are assumed to have married in or around Yanceyville (where Alice lived). Family recollection has it that in order for Andrew to marry Alice at such a young age, it was "required" by her Grandfather (guardian) that the couple live on his property for "a few years". Benjamin Poteat lived on Milton Road with his wife (also named Alice) per the 1900 and 1910 census for Yanceyville, Caswell County, NC; both reports include Andrew's soon to be wife, Alice residing with the Poteat's. As Kenneth Scott was the first of four children born to Andrew W. and Alice Scott--with the second born in Yanceyville and the third just north of there in Milton, I am thinking that it is more logical that Kenneth would have actually been born in Yanceyville before they moved off the Poteat property.
Any assistance you might be able to provide in verifying Kenneth Scott's place of birth, or the marriage of Andrew Wilson and Alice [Lea] Scott in approximately 1912--in or around Yanceyville, would be greatly appreciated.
Sincerely,
Richard Martin

Name: Dennis Doughty <yidman@aol.com> Date: 2006-06-24 Caswell Co. Surnames Peterson Comments:
I descend from Vincent Peterson and Polley Peterson of Caswell County North Carolina.
Vincent Peterson and his spouse Polley Peterson (her maiden name was Peterson as well) were married 19 May 1821 in Caswell County North Carolina.
It's rather tough finding information on the above two ancestors of mine with both of them having the last name of Peterson.
In 1850 the family is living in Williamson County Illinois:
Peterson Vincent 60 farmer $250 NC
Mary 45 NC
Elijah 25 farmer NC
Elizabeth 20 NC
Blanche 17 NC
Mary 14 NC
Agnes 11 NC
I believe the family above could be connected with the below people of Caswell County, NC:
Polly Peterson married Vincent Peterson on 19 May 1821 in Caswell County North Carolina, Richmond District. I have no idea if they were cousins or simply shared the same surname. I did see where the witness for the marriage was Noah Page.
On 22 March 1819 Elizabeth Lea married Samuel Paul and the witness was Vincent Peterson. I wonder if there is a family connection with Peterson and Lea?
On 10 Januar 1820 Susan Peterson married Noah Page, and Benjamin Dameron was the witness.
Susannah Peterson married Edward Morton on 3 July 1825 and John Lea was the witness.
On 7 March 1825 Blanche Peterson married David Hall and Freeman Hubbard was the witness.
My above ancestors Polly and Vincent Peterson did have a daughter (my ancestor as well) by the name of Blancy/Blanche Peterson, and I wonder if the Blance Peterson who married David Hall could be the sibling of either Vincent or Polly Peterson?
I may be reached by email at yidman@aol.com
Thank you,
Dennis Doughty

I am attempting to tie the family of Joseph K. Cobb, born c1798,99, married Kitty C. Harris, 30 Aug 1865, to other Cobb families who migrated to Haywood and Madison Counties about 1826 - 1830. Joseph K. died 1861 in Haywood Co., TN. after which time Kitty sold their property in Haywood Co., TN and returned to Caswell Co, NC. where she died in 1890. Her mother's maiden name was Kenson; her father's first name is unknown. She was born 1808 in Virginia.
Joseph K. Cobb may have attended the Bethesda Presbyterian Church.
The family of Nicholas Cobb, who migrated from Isle of Wight, VA and Bertie Co., NC lived nearby in Haywood Co., but there is no apparent connection between them and Joseph K. Cobb. On the other hand, Joseph's and Kitty's daughter Sarah Frances Cobb married Anderson Rose, and they are buried with family members from the line of Robert W. Cobb b. 10/23/1793 Caswell Co., NC., married Mary Ann Tate 10/6/1818. Robert Cobb died 4/21/1956. We suspect that Joseph K. may have been a brother or a close cousin of either one or both these families as his migration followed a little later, but local records reveal nothing.

Yesterday I came across a volume in the Indiana State Library entitled, "Caswell County North Carolina Marriage Bonds 1778-1868."
Pn page 31 of that volume, there is a marriage shown between Abediah (in fact, Obediah) Crews and Rebecca Cobb. Date of the marriage was 10 November 1835, and the bondsman or witness was Jesse E. Cobb.
Can enyone explain the relationship between Jesse and Rebecca? Was he her father or a brother?
The few Caswell County records I have seen seem to indicate that Obediah Crews' parents may have been an Obediah Crews Sr and Martha. Does anyone know anything about this family?
Thanks.

Name: Margaret Miller <almb@sw.rr.com> Date: 2005-07-30 Caswell Co. Surnames MARTIN, TURNER, FLOWERS, PIPKIN, POWELL BROWN Comments:
I am seeking help with the following family, one Richard Martin who may have been born in Orange Co., VA., m1 ANTHORITE ___ and with her had 4 children: 1) Lydia, b ca 1750, married Jacob Flowers; 2) Mary, b ca 1753, m ___ Pipkin, dec'd before her father wrote his will in 1786; 3) Aaron, b 1755, died with will in 1795...names son Richard in the will but indicates 6 additional children not named; 4) Elizabeth Martin, b 1760, m ca 1786, probably in Wayne Co., NC., to Nicholas Powell, son of Douglas Powell and brother to Starling Powell. In 1765 Richard and Anthorite were selling VA property possibly in preparation for moving into NC, Caswell or Orange Co. When and where Anthorite died is not known; however, on 25 Oct 1783 Richard Martin married in Caswell Co., Frances Turner, daughter of Henry Turned who left a will. Richard was on the Tax Roll in 1784 in Caswell Co where his son, "Little" Richard was born. Other children born to this union were 2) Bitha in 1785 and 3) Sarah "Sallie" b 1785, m in 1806 to Samuel Flowers. "Little" Richard married in 1816 to Sarah Brown, granddaughter of Leonard Brown; this couple relocated to TN, perhaps, Sumner Co. where he died in 1842.
Richard Martin wrote his will in 1786, probated in in 1786 all in Wayne Co., NC. In the will he named his 7 children and his wife, Franky. During 1788 the following occurred: 1) Franky filed an inventory on the estate of Richard Martin, dec'd, naming children of both marriages; a bond was posted by Aaron Martin for the guardianship of "Little" Richard and Samuel Harrill made bond to be the guardian of the two minor females, Bitha and Sarah; 3) Frances/Franky sells to Samuel Harrill the 150 ac on which she then lives that had been left to her by Richard Martin, dec'd, on the condition that he rear her 3 children, namely: Richard, Bitha, and Sarah. While Samuel Harrill retained guardianship of the two girls, Bitha and Sarah, in 1793 Starling Powell posted bond for guardianship of "Little" Richard with the understanding that he was responsible to Aaron Martin as to the management of the assets of "Little" Richard.
What I have for this family has been derived from primary sources such as the NC Archives, Deeds of Wayne Co., NC., Tas payers of NC, etc.; however, there reamains a crucial question, did this Richard Martin serve during the RW or did he not? If so, in which unit might his record be located? Anything at all that would be helpful in identify that service.
I need help in separating the entities of "my" Richard Martin and of the "other" Richard Martin who was born 1755, served 2.5 yrs in the Continental line, married one Frances Turner on 25 Oct 1781 in Caswell County, applied for a pension in 1832, and died in 1841 in Caswell Co.; that his wife, Frances, died soon after, also in Caswell Co. This Richard had 5 sons, one named George T, born 1784 and who was the executor of the will of his mother. [I have been unable to locate his will.] The children of this marriage were George T, b 1784;p Lewis Martin, James Martin, Henry Martin b 23 Feb 1793, and Richard Martin.
As you will note, there are few similarities between these two Richards other than the name of their wives, the dates of marriage which were two years apart, Caswell Co., and a son named Richard who appears to have had no active role in the documentation of this latter family.
All indicators point to the fact that "my" Richard was a much older man than the "other" Richard which would not necessarily preclude "my" Richard from having seen RW service, at least in providing Patriotic Service. The crux of this seems to be: DID OR DID NOT "MY" RICHARD MARTIN SERVE DURING THE RW?

When did Anthorite die? On 25 Oct 1783 in Caswell Co., Richard Martin married Frances Turner, dau/o Henry Taylor who d ca 1807; Richard was on 1784 tax roll in Caswell Co where his son was born in 1784. Daughter Bitha was born 1785, and daughter Sarah, 1786, married in 1806 to Samuel Flowers.Richard wrote his will in Wayne Co NC in 1786, he died in 1786, and his will was probated in 1786, all in Wayne Co., NC. Daughter Mary who married ___ Pipkin was dec'd at the time her father wrote his will. In 1788 the following events occurred: 1) Samuel Harrill was given guardianship of the two girls, Bitha and Sarah; 2) Aaron Martin was given guaridanship of "little" Richard; 3) Franky Martin filed an inventory on the estate of the late Richard Martin in which she named the foregoing children and them alone; 4) Franky sold to Samuel Harrill the 150 acres on which she was living that had been left to her by Fichard Martin, dec'd, on the condition that he rear her three children...Richard, Bitha, and Sarah. In 1793 Starling Powell, brother to Nicholas Powell and son of Douglas Powell, posted bond for the guardianship of "little" Richard, being responsible to Aaron Martin for the management of "little" Richard's inheritance. In 1816 "little" Richard Martin was married to Sarah Brown, granddaughter of Leonard Brown and he, along with in-laws relocted to TN, perhaps Sumner County. In 1806 Sararh "Sallie" Martin married Samuel Flowers. Whom did Aaron Martin marry and what was the names of the 6 children not named in his will; he named only son Richard. What was the given name of Mr. Pipkin who married Mary Martin. When and where were they married, her date of death, and issue? What about Lydia and Jacob Flowers? Aaron and and the name of his wife? Did Franky remarry? When and where did she die? Did she leave a will naming the children named in her husband's will, at least those of "little" Richard, Bitha, and Sarah Martin (Flowers)? Any help with the reconstruction of this family will be very much appreciated. Thanks.

On your website, there is a section about the Cobb Family, contributued by Mark Phelps. I have just started my own family research and have run into many snags. One of them is the Cobb Family. The research I have to date takes me to Samuel H. Cobb born in Indiana (1828) married to Mary Ann (Hatfield?). Census information indicates that his father was from South Carolina and mother from Indiana.
John Cobb and Avery Owens have come up as possible parents on LDS, but so has the family of John Cobb and Ann Black.
The information Mr. Phelps provided was extremely interesting and has hopefully pointed me in the right direction. In the article he mentioned having further information on descendants of Thomas Cobb (b.1781) and John Cobb (b. 1786). I would be very interested in seeing if I fall into either of these lines.
I would be greatful for any help in this matter.

I am desperately trying to find out who the parents of my gg grandmother, Elizabeth Ashby, were. She was supposedly born in North Carolina in about 1799/1800. Somehow, she managed to get to Jefferson Co., Alabama. There she married my gg grandfather, Randolph Johnson in 1823. The only other Ashby I have found there was a James Ashby, born in 1807 and died in 1891, buried in Mt. Zion Cemetery. This I found from looking at the Mt. Zion cemetery records which are now on line. Then, I found from looking for a James Ashby on Google.com, that there were a LOT of James Ashby's, but one was from Caswell, North Carolina. Is there anybody out there who has heard of the Ashby family in NC and/or is researching them? Thanks for any info you can give me. I would love to find out who Elizabeth Ashby's parents were. Naturally, this James Ashby I found could only be a relative, like a younger brother.

Trying to connect my family to ther Caswell County roots. Harriet Graves/Groves/Games was born in Milton, NC around 1820.
I believe she first married a Mr. Jones around 1840 and had three children: Lewis (1844), Virginia (1846), and Carolina (1849) in Milton, NC. I found a record of them in the 1850 census.
She must have then married a Charles William Boyd in Caswell Co around the 1850 and then moved to Brown Co, Ohio around 1855. I have found her widowed in the 1860-1910 Ohio census records.
I am trying to confirm Harriet's maiden name and find out more information of her marriage to Mr. Jones.

Are there any records in Caswell County showing that Josiah Daniel b 18 Dec 1805 was born there or ever lived there? Are there any school records or church records? I'm hoping to prove that he was the son of James Key Daniel as our DNA matches his descendants. Josiah was married in Greene Co., Alabama, in 1830. I checked Caswell County, but found no marriage for him prior to that one. I checked the deed records and did not find him ever owning land there. Family legend says that Josiah was Primitive Baptist, but I do not know if his parents were or not. Thank you.

I have reason to believe my ancestors on my mother's side are buried in Caswell, Person and Orange counties.
I am looking for the following couples:
Hosea Tapley, b. about 1691, married Sarah Moore, b. about 1700 (my gggggg grandparents, yet to be verified)
John Hosea Tapley, b. about 1735, married Lucy Pryor, b, about 1740.
Hosea Green Tapley, b. about 1767, married Eleanor Rogers McFarland, b. about 1768
I have found the graves of Eleanor McFarland Tapley and all subsequent lineage to present, outside of North Carolina.
Supposedly Eleanor left Caswell County, to Ralls and Pike Co., MO, and remarried a Cleaver, after Hosea Green Tapley was killed by indians in Caswell in 1799. I did find her in the woods of land that belonged to Cleavers years and years ago.
Hosea and John Hosea Tapley may have come from VA to NC.
Any suggestions on how to verify the Tapley line would be greatly appreciated. I want to do some advanced homework,as I plan to come to the counties mentioned in a week or two. I plan to spend a week or two "on the ground" phyically searching for these people.
Thanks

My Great, Great, Great Grandfather, John Atkinson settled in Caswell County around 1740. From a book about one of his sons, Henry Atkinson, I learned a little about John's political career and that he fought in the revolutionary war. He evidently aquired a sizable estate and had several sons, John Jr., Edward, Carter and Thomas, and at least two daughters, who's names are unknown to me. I am looking for info on the marriage between Nora Mebone and James Lewis, as well as any children this union produced.
Linora Mebane is recorded in the 1870 Milton,Caswell Co. Census with her mother. In 1880 a Nora Mebone is recorded in a McGehee household with her eldest sister, Jane. James Lewis' family is recorded in Dan River, Pittsylvania Co., VA in 1870 and 1880. Unfortunately, I have not found James recorded with any verified family members to date. He is not recorded in his father's household in 1870 or with any of his siblings that I have identified in 1880.
I do know that Nora and James had a daughter, Maggie, ca. 1891 and a daughter, Anna, ca. 1893. Anna is recorded as a niece in the household of Harrison Stamps in 1900 Milton, Caswell Co.. I believe Henrietta Stamps to be James Lewis's sister. She is recorded as a Lewis in 1870 Dan River, Pittsylvania Co.
I can find no record of Nora Mebone(sp)between 1880 and 1910 when she reappears in Florida. 1910 is also the first time that I have found any record of Maggie. In 1910 Nora is recorded to have given birth to 13 children, 11 of which were still living. Of the 11 only 3 are recorded with her in 1910.
Any info on Nora Mebone, James Lewis and their children would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your consideration and assistance.

I am seeking info on my grt-grt-grandfather, Jesse Monroe Nichols, born 1825 somewhere in NC. He later lived in Mississippi but I don't know if the family moved when he was young or if he moved in adulthood. He married Mary Ann Cook in MS in 1852 and they had 12 children. He died in MS 19 July 1877. His widow and children all moved to Texas. Is there any possibility he's related to Caswell Co. NC Nichols? Any information on family / relations / ancestry / origins greatly appreciated. Steve

Same for his bride Sarah WALKER, prob dau of James H. WALKER of Warren Co TN. Solomon died 20 Feb 1864 in Nashville Hosp #11 of smallpox while serving in the CW.
