Hello, I am a Brazilian Ormrod. I know little about my English grandfather Thomaz Ormrod, since he died at a very young age, when my father was only 6 yars old. All I know is that he came to brazil to work at the railway construction (contructed by English companies at the begining of the 20st century). Is there any way I could get to know his origins or the year he Left England?
Thank you for youre time and sorry for the bad english.

I'm looking into my travelling showman Fathers side of our family tree, his mother was Mabel Ormrod born 1892-1935 daughter of John Ormrod born around 1850 son of Oliver Ormrod born around 1826 (married to Elizabeth). I'm trying to work out if we are related to the said runaway Oliver on your Ormrod page. Could anyone point me to a census that could link up? Thank you for putting the site together its an amazing story and I hope I'm part of it.

Can you please tell me anything about my Dad's brother Charles, who died in 1924, the same year as his Mother Sarah Ann Ormerod, new Windle.
I have a photo of him taken at his poultry farm in 1921, he would have been
About 24 y.o.a. I was told in my younger days that one of the brothers fell into a lime pit in his teens, so it couldn't have been Charles. It's a mystery to me of how many boys were in the family, 4 or 5. It would be great to find out
Before I start to lose my memory, as I am getting ancient. Some of my family are interested in my side, which is the Ormerod's of Fence.
My Dad's parents were Thomas Henry Ormerod, and Sarah Anne -nee
Windle.
Much Obliged if you could find help me with my request

I came across your site as a result of attempting research into the 9th Royal Irish Rifles through one of their number who was an Old Boy of my former school, Birkenhead Institute. I was interested to see that you had a photograph of the Officers of the Battalion. I was wondering where the original image might be accessed and whether there was any names written on the back and any date? Looking forward to hearing from you.

The genealogy on this site of Mary Haydock has at least one fatal error -

I don't know whether significant errors in this file this have previously been brought to your attention:
Here are some of my results from an analysis of Mary's stated ancestry.
Important Note: Mary Haydock born 1530 (more likely 1528) CANNOT be the daughter of Simon Haydock and Anne Grimshaw - the dates are WRONG!
Her supposed grandfather John Grimshaw was born 20 years after Mary, and her supposed mother Anne Grimshaw was born about 1570.
The Grimshaw connection is important because it is this line that goes through the Clifford family to Lionel of Antwerp, son of King Edward III.
Mary might have been the daughter of Siman Haydock's father (also called Simon) but i have seen no evidence of that, and that would eliminate the Grimshaw connection.

Hi,
My name is Kesja and I attend The Manchester College.
Our college campus, Shena Simon is doing a project about the Fallen Boys from our college that before the Great War, housed the Central High School and Municipal Cental High School for Boys.
One of the names I was given was Harry Ormerod. The database on ancestry.com came up with four names, therefore I am focusing on Pte. Harry Ormerod of the East Lancashire Regiment, 2nd Bn., 28817, who died on Monday 5th March 1917.
Is it okay if I'll ask you about the physical appearence of Harry's and/or any photos that could add to his physical descripion?
If you have any documents that say which one of the four Harry's Omerod's was the one attending this school on Whitworth Street Manchester M1 3HB, can I just ask about the confirmation that I have the right boy. I am assuming it is him, since he was the youngest, however they all died in the same year and lived close to each other, they all ranked as a Private, but any information will be helpful.

Thank you very much,
Sincerely,
Miss Dabrowska

I will let you know if we find out more about our branch of the family.

I am trying to learn everything I can about Capt. Poyser

I am the great grandson or grandson of the owners of the Ormerod silk mill in either Rastrick or Brighouse. The family seem to have been connected to families of Hanson & Hoyle because I am in possession of a privately printed book entitled Pedigree of Hanson & Hoyle. This was researched & written by one Hanson Ormerod of Greenroyd, Brighouse & (if my Latin is right) published in 1906 - with 30 copies printed, mine being copy No 2. It contains a massive amount of detail with copies of wills etc, and charts of Hansons of Woodhouse & Hoyles of Swift Place

Hello
What a wonderful and informative website this is - congratulations!
I have been trying to find additional information about the families of my great-grandparents, Robert Waddington and Amelia Sutcliffe who were married at Accrington in 1855 and who with daughter Jane Alice Amelia, born Accrington 1861, sailed to Melbourne on the SS Great Britain in 1862.
From the marriage certificate I know that Robert's father was Nicholas (block cutter) and Amelia's father was John a labourer in a print works. On the marriage certificate John is listed as deceased.
On Jane's registration of birth the family's address is Ormerod Street New Accrington.
I would appreciate advice on how to research Robert and Amelia's siblings and how to trace further back the family line.
I would also, with your permission, like to add to our work your quote written by Rev. S. T. Taylor-Taswell.
You can see our "work in progress" here

Hi, thanks for the great information on your website and for all the work you have done! I am descended through Martha Ormerod and John Lowry (in Ontario). I am looking for information on Thomas Ormerod who married Isabella Blain. You have listed that he was born in 1790 and also in 1770. Is this the same person, or is it a father / son? I am trying to go back further, and I just have some uncertainty on this point.

Thanks, and best regards,

I recently found a letter written from17 Marine square, Brighton in 1847. My interest is that I live in Marine Square now but have deciphered the signature as that of Sarah Ormerod. The letter mentions Herbert who is likely to be her husband. A brief search in Ancestry reveals that she was born in India nee Prend. The l etter is not easy to read but appears to be to a member of the local church and is eight pages long. If this is of any interest, please contact me.

Hello, my name is Stephen and I am working on a friend's family tree. I have reached Susannah Ormerod (b abt 1824 in Todmorden acc to censuses# who married a James Whittaker in Bury in 1847. The marriage document states that her father was Richard Ormerod.
I found a Susannah Ormroyd bap 1.8.1823, parents Richard and Jane Ormroyd in Stansfield #I understand Stansfield is now part of Todmorden) in the parish of Heptonstall. I think this must be her.
But I have found an Ormerod tree with Susannah, Jane and Richard Ormerod, but with Susannah's birth given as 1825. Copuld this be a different Susannah?
Then I found the birth of a Richard Ormroyd (bap 1.7.1798, Heptonstall), parents Richard and Sally Ormroyd. The tree mentioned above has Richard with the same baptismal date, but different parents (John Ormerod and Jennet Chadwick). I haven't been able to clarify this, even via your great site, and wondered if anyone could help me out. Many thanks in advance, Stephen

Wonderful website -thank you for posting all this interesting iinformation.

The Ormerods of Ormerod tree has Mary the daughter of Lawrence ORMEROD (6O1 according to Milton Ormerod's nomenclature) and his second wife marrying Robert TOWNLEY of Royle (Burnley).

This tree has Nicholas, the son of Mary and Robert, born abt 1634 (incidentally I think he was more likely born about 1624). But the tree also has Mary (namely his mother) born abt 1640. So there is something wrong here!

Robert TOWNLEY definitely married a Mary daughter of Lawrence ORMEROD. He could have been 6O1 but I don't know(maybe 5O1)which Lawrence he would have been.

I am currently researching my mother-in-law's family. So far I have traced them back to an Oliver Ormerod born abt. 1815. He was first married to Betty Shaw on 6 February 1837 in St Mary the Virgin Church in Blackburn. He later married Elizabeth Lang on 24 September 1860 in Preston. I have found 12 children to the first wife and 5 to the second wife. I have not yet checked to see if there are any links to the families you have listed in the 'genealogy' section. Almost all the research I have done so far has been in Scotland so I would be grateful for any pointers in taking this research any further. Thank you.

What a great site! I e mailed the following to Paul on the 2nd October but perhaps it got lost in the spam folder. It would make a hudge difference if you or your readers could help fill the gaps.

Hi Paul

I am researching the history of Memorial Park, Padiham for a small permanent exhibition, booklet and virtual exhibition. I am doing this as my contribution to the work of the Friends of Memorial Park, a voluntary group that supports the development of the park.

Although the creation of a park had been talked about for many years between the late 19thC and the early 20thC it took the tragedy of WW1 to finally galvanise the town into creating the park as a memorial to those local men who died during the war. I am trying to make the exhibition and the history of these men more interesting to viewers today by researching the background of some of the men named on the memorial and identifying where they lived, worked etc.

I found your excellent web site and the information on the Waddington family with its concentration on Padiham and adjoining villages. This and the Ormerod information has been most helpful.

There is one Ormerod and four Waddingtons listed on the WW1 memorial. It would be really helpful if you or your family could help me find out more about these men. I'm particularly interested in anything that makes them real to people now and/or links with other aspects of the parks history. For example Knight Hill estate and House was purchased to form part of the park and in the 19thC George Waddington had lived at Knight Hill and farmed the land as a tenant of the Honor of Clitheroe. Also the solicitors acting for the purchase were Waddingtons. What if any is the family link with the Waddingtons that died in WW1?

The men are:

Harry Ormerod
b. Sabden, Lancs, e. Burnley, Lancs, r. Padiham, Lancs, 35021, PRIVATE, Killed in action, France & Flanders 0I/04/17, Lancashire Fusiliers,16th Battalion. According to the CWGC, Harry was the husband of Beatrice Ethel Ormerod of 33 Shakespeare St, Padiham.

Albert Edward Waddington
b. Accrington, e. Burnley, r. Padiham. 17176 Private, Killed in action, France & Flanders 19/91/16. Cameronians (Scottish Riffles) 19th Bn. According to the Burnley Express 29/1/1916 Albert lived at 52 Ightenhill St, Padiham.

John Waddington
b. Padiham, e. Padiham 235312 Private, Killed in action, France & Flanders 23/08/1918. Suffolk Regt 2nd Bn. Formerly 3402 E Lancs Regt. According to the CWGC, John was the husband of Elizabeth Ann Waddington of 16 Well St Padiham and the son of Nicholas Waddington.

T L Waddington
Thomas b. Padiham, e. Burnley r. Padiham 36210 Private, Killed in action, France & Flanders 25/05/1915. Welsh Regt 1st Bn

The other Waddington on the memorial is:
A Waddington, Scottish Riffles. I can't find this name in the records.

I would appreciate any help that you may be able to provide.

Regards
John Tilley

With the help this amazing site and other sources, I have been researching my wife’s (nee. Ormerod) ancestry. I have information regarding the descendents of John Ormerod who was baptized at Cross Stone on 17 Jan 1787. Your records of this sub-branch appear to finish at him but from information obtained from my wife’s relation, aged 92 and still living in Todmorden, the line continues.
As your records show, John married Betty - no maiden name I’m afraid. They had a son, Abraham who was born at Stansfield in 1835, lived at Pudsey, Cornholme and died 22 Jun 1891 and was buried at Shore Baptist Chapel. His gravestone is the first shown on your relevant page of grave photos.
Abraham married Sarah Cunfiffe who died on 26 Mar 1898 and was buried with Abraham. They had six children and I have some details of them and the following generations. Please contact me if you would like to have them.

I have been looking at "The Aidensfield Hospital" at TV here, and there is a doctor Ormerod. I found that interesting, as I guessed it had to be a norwegian name. Many names in Norway have the ending -rud, that means land which is "rydd", cleared for forest and stones and cultivated. 6650 Ormerod names in norw. thelephone books.

I just read the comments of: Neville Ormerod's Family Site

Presents the results of Neville Ormerod's research into his family history - including an intriguing Ormerod link with Brazil...

And yes...I ve thought we were only a few Ormerod´s in Brazil but now i´ve been researching and actually we´re a lot down here. I am trying to trace the family origin till at least we know the first Ormerod that arrived in Brazil...Tks for any information.

Hi
I have recently done obituaries of Edward Ormerod on www.findagrave.com and wikipedia. He was born in Church near Accrington and died in Atherton, between Bolton and Wigan. I have a set of photos of his grave in Atherton cemetery you can have.
He is famous in mining circles as the inventor of the Ormerod safety link.
I have not found him or his family in any of your families- yet.

I was informed about this website by a colleague in the Armed forces. I only know my family ancestry as far back as my Grandfather who was called Joseph, he had four children, one being my father Terence. My Grandfather was born in Rochdale as was my father and myself. They were brought in the Newbold area of Rochdale. I did not realise that the Ormerod name was so old, and we are spread all over the country, I was always told by my grandfather that we were predominantly from Lancashire. having read the history of the Ormerods on the website, i must admit i am hooked on finding out more about my own ancestry and the history of the ormerod family. Hi
I believe your James Hunt was my GG grandads brother. My GG Grandad was John Francis Hunt born to John and Bridget(Annie). James was the eldest born in Ireland 1878 followed by Margaret b Ireland 1879, John Francis b Cheshire 1882, William b 1885 in Cheshire, Annie b 1890 in Lancashire. I have not done much research "sideways" and only have John Hunt b1830 Ireland as the next ancestor. Not sure on Mother - possibly Ellen Ryan? I have come to a stop and searched almost every Ireland site but can't find much info at all. Ancestry.com matched me with some of your tree but I cannot email you through them.
I believe we are related somehow through your Ormerod line (Anne married James)
regards
Karen (nee Hunt)(b1960 Salford, lived in Australia since 1969)

My husbands family is Horrocks, however his Great Grandma on his fathers side was Ann Ormerod who was born in Mossley which was then in Cheshire but now in Great Manchester in circ 1851, she married Joseph Ditchfield who was born in Bury Lancashire now Greater Manchester, but appeared to moved to Blackburn as a child sometime after 1861. It appears that our Ormerods are those from Waddington, through Oliver who was married to Ellen Thornber. We have found your website extremely interesting.

It was nice to see the town where we settled after getting married ATHERTON mentioned. My husband's family the Horrocks still mainly live in Blackburn 23 miles from us, I come from Bolton and my father is CAIN and my mother HEWITT.

On your War Graves Project you mention my great uncle, George Ellis Ormerod, buried in the Charlottenburg Cemetery, Berlin. Indeed he was originally buried at the cemetery at Meiningen. He had been captured at Calais in 1940 and, although he managed to escape, he was a POW at Stalag 9C (Bad Sulza) and worked in the salt mines. He was wounded and was then Prisoner at the Hospital at Obermassfeld. Whilst here, he managed to escape again and apparently "died whilst crossing a railway track".

He is also listed on the War Memorial at Rickmansworth,Hertfordshire which is where he lived (not London- although this was where he worked). Prioir to WW2 he had been a regular soldier and had only left the army 8 months prior to the outbreak of war.

Information on your brilliant site has helped me trace my ancestors back to the Robert Ormerod that died in 1591. The Ormerod name of this branch of the family ended with the death in 1973 of my father Walter who came from Cornholme. Many of his more recent forebears are buried in the graveyard at the old chapel at the top of the hill at Shore where the family were farmers.
I already had details of the family back to the John Ormerod who was born 1787 and baptised at Crosstone on 17 Jan 1787.
A previous Walter (my great uncle) was killed in WW1 but I have no date for it or information of the whereabouts of his grave. Any help in finding this would be greatly appreciated. His father was Henry Ormerod who was born on 9th May 1858. He had two brothers, Frank and Fielden who was born on 22nd March 1893 - my grandfather.
Again many thanks for the information contained in this excellent website. Regards - Christine Phillips

Dr. Ormerod's fine book does not mention any Ormerods of Hapton, although the parish registers indicate there was at least one family of Ormerods there in the late 16th and into the 17th century. I would like to ask him about these, but do not know how to contact him. Any help would be much appreciated.
Your site is to be commended. It would be nice to have an early, perhaps 18th century (or at least 19th century) map of the "Ormerod heartland" areas, in the map section.
I appreciate the parish register entries.

I found this site by mistake by entering my own name on google, and I am so happy to have found it! I found information on my great grandfather James Ormrod, who went down on the Lusitania with his brother. I always knew about it, but seeing this made it so real and brought me to tears for the first time about my great grandfather who I never met.

I live in New York (actually, New Jersey right across the river) now, and am so glad to have found this site. I intend on going to the memorial in London, and definitely intend on reading as much of this site as possible. THANK YOU!!

I have a lot of information on the Ormrods that are in Canada if you would like to contact me.

Mary Jane married Thomas Clegg and my great grandmother was Margaret Jane and she married a Ralph Smith in 1902. The Ceggs and Ormerods came from Milnrow - census place (1881) Butterworth lancs. Is this on of your Ormerods?

I am originally from Truro, Massachusetts (born in Hynannis) along with sisters: Norma (Bales) Ormerod, Evelyn (Drieling) Ormerod, Mary (Wolfe) Ormerod, Barbara (Williamson) Ormerod, Elizabeth Ann (McQueen) Ormerod, and Jeannette Marie (Summerall) Ormerod, and brother: William Johnson Ormerod. We still have some relatives in that area. Our mother is Marjorie Elizabeth (Rose)Ormerod, married to Walter Johnson Ormerod - divorced in 1952 or 1953 time frame. Have come across some Ormerods recently in Kentucky - one is Carly Ormerod who is a star basketball player for the University of Kentucky women's basketball team. Am not sure where they are originally from - talked with a couple of Ormerod's during my tour of duty in the U.S. Marine Corps - one was from the New England area, but not sure exactly where. Finding this site was a wonderful experience - did not know exactly where the Ormerod name originated from, although I knew it had English background - was not aware of the Australian side. Very, very interesting - will visit again.

I've enjoyed my little browse through your website but found it rather hard to find the 'route'to myself? Therefore resulting in a little light research with the help of Mitlon Ormerod and John Hess, and some helpful annotations by my late grandfather (Patrick Johnson Ormerod) From which Milton Ormerod seems to deny George Ormerod of the Ormerod line, this appears almost ideosyncratic that the author of 'History of Cheshire' would be able to make such a gargantuan mistake!? Has anybody else noticed the trend for Americans and Canadians discovering Ormerods in their family?

I think this website is excellent. You have obviously worked very hard in producing this website and it pays off. There is a wealth of information here and it will take a while to soak it all in! However, I was surprised, as yet, not to have found anything on Eleanor Anne Ormerod (Tyldesley) (1828-1901). She is very important in that she was the first woman to be awarded an LL.D. from Edinburgh University, and Virginia Woolf wrote an essay on her called 'Miss Ormerod' (1924). There is a lot of information on her and is known as an excallent Entermologist.

Thank you very much for producing this site. I myself am thankful for using it to research my own interests, and, as a member of the Ormerod family, am impressed by the extrordinary and diverse lives my ancestors had.

Well done and thank you.

Ow Do Ormerods!
I'd like to announce the foundation of a Swedish branch of the family line, which came about with the birth of my son James Ormerod, citizen of Sweden.
I come myself from Accrington, which isn't especially unusual for an Ormerod. My father is Ian Ormerod and my Grandfather was called James Ormerod, and that's about the extent of my knowledge unfortunately.
I work at a technical translation company and one of our Norwegian translators tried to persuade me that 'Ormerod' must be of Norwegian origin: apparently there are quite a number of 'Ormerud's living in the greater Oslo area.
Does anyone know of any other Scandinavian Ormerods? A quick check of the Swedish phonebook reveals three: myself, my wife and one mysterious other (Maria Ormerod). There's also a Pia Ormerod, who is the London correspondent of one of the Swedish newspapers, but I suppose she's married to an English Ormerod.

My paternal gt.grandmother was Annie Eliza ORMEROD born around 1843 in Bradford. Birth as yet not found. She was married in 1860 to Robert WALSHAW in Hunslet, her father was said to be Henry Samuel ORMEROD a cotton merchant.
her mother was Mary ASQUITH of Leeds. She was single on the 1841 census in Leeds and a widow in 1851 in Pontefract.
Annie had a grandmother Rebecca ORMEROD who died aged 76 but no date given. there is also a Kate ORMEROD who we think was the daughter of Robert & Annie but born out of wedlock anddid not live with her parents until she appeared on the 1881 Pontefract census aged 21.
Has anyone got any idea where these Yorkshire Ormerods where?

Having known that we are Vikings has never been enough for me, and when my dads cousin Jack Lord sent a family tree from Todmerden, England I photocopied a copy and wanted to research more. It wasn't until I recently got the internet connected that I could start. GUESS WHAT. I now go back further than the written record, but I can also fill in the gaps down past my father to my brother and his boys etc...Who do i contact to pass this information on.All us Ormerod's came from a common source, we all need to know our history. A fascinating site. I grew up with the tale that my grandfather Herbert James Ormerod (1889-1965)had once traced his family back to a norman baron who had travelled to England with the norman conquest, and had been given land in Lancashire which became known as Ormerod.

An Oliver Ormerod of Rochdale 1811-1879 wrote regularly for the Rochdale Observer, and produced two books collecting his articles in the mid-nineteenth century. They comprise humorous accounts of trips to the Great Exhibition in London and are written in a phonetic rendering of the Rochdale dialect. I work for Bernard Quaritch, a rare book dealership in London, and a copy of the later volume has just come into stock, inscribed by the author to a friend.

Per the marriage record for Henry & Eliza the father of Henry was HENRY ORMEROD, no mothers name is listed. I would like to find the parents and siblings of HENRY ORMEROD (b. 1837). The names of the children of Henry & Eliza were: Martha Jane, James, Harry, Abraham, George Washington, Mary Elizabeth, and Sarah Alice (my grandmother). Martha Jane was the only child born in England, others were born in the U.S.

Fantastic website!

Phebe Ormeroyd (bap 8 Jul 1666 of Stansfield) was the second wife of my 9th great grandfather Robert Suthers (circa 1666-1742). She had a will proved Feb 1734/35. Robert's first wife was buried 20 Jan 1700 at Heptonstall. I don't think Robert & Phebe had any children in that relationship.

My maternal grandfather was Charles Ormerod from Wigan, he married Mary Ann Ward who was born in Wolverhampton. They had five children John Edward, Frederick, Ethel (died in infancy), Mary, and my mother Winifred Lilian.
My grandparents moved to Crumlin, Monmouthshire where they became the first caretakers of The School of Mines in Crumlin, about1914/15.
My mother was very proud of her surname and helped to form a "family tree" for a lady in Australia where my cousin John Ormerod now lives. It is interesting to note that many of the same Christian names crop up! She was particularly sad that she did not include her maiden name with her married name -Jones, but at that time this was considered somewhat pretentious.
I would like to carry on from where she left off -looking for family links.

These are only names on my mothers side of the family, she was evelyn ormerod, before she married my father. She was the daughter of William Henry Ormerod, son of Oliver Ormerod, born 1846 to Elizabeth Ormerod (he was illegitimate) she later married George Harwood when Oliver was 6 weeks old, she was the daughter of George Ormerod born 1802 to Oliver Ormerod born 1773 in Wilpshire, and Rosamund Eastham who were the parents of
John, George, Oliver, Catherine, Ellen and Rosamund. All born in Wilpshire, he, Oliver senior was classed as a farmer.
Oliver was born in 1773, his father was George Ormerod and his mother was Jane Catlow. My cousin was talking to someone at a lectur in Rossendale, and the lecturer thought that we might be descended from the Gambleside and Wolfenden Ormerods. Have you come across any of these names?

I would welcome any thoughts on this matter. By the way my grandfather William Henry Ormerod married Emma Duxbury from Darwen. She was the daughter of Eli Duxbury and Mary Anne Walsh, also from Darwen. She was the daughter od Croft Walsh also from Darwn.

I am amazed at the Ormerod lore here. Is there a connection with Ormrod families, without the "e"?
My grandmother was born Jane Alice Ormrod and her mother was Mary Ormrod, daughter of Mary Higson and John Ormrod. Family story has it that this John Ormrod was the brother of James and Peter Ormrod who had cotton mills in Bolton and built churches there. I am looking for any family connections and trying to document the connection of these supposed brothers. The children of Mary Higson and John Ormrod appear on the 1881 census in and around Rosamund St, but I have not been able to find their parents.
