I believe Eliza Robinson bp.05/03/1820 to be the sister of my g.g.grandfather Arthur Robinson bp.18/05/1818 St. Mary Extra,Southhampton.
Eliza and Arthurs' parents were William Robinson and Ursula (nee Kerley)
I think that it was Eliza's youngest brother William bp.08/08/1824 who was landlord of The Pear Tree Inn,not a nephew.
Arthur my g.g.grandfather owned The King and Queen Inn at Hamble from c.1845. His family were there until well into the 1920's.
Hope this is of some help to you

My house is on your website!!! I was fascinated to read the article about Rosetta Weedon marrying William Dennis Tilbury 1888 because in the text was an old photo of my house. It was then called "Yew Trees" and is now called "Orchard Lodge" on Hazlemere Road in Penn. I have been trying to research who lived in my house since I moved here in 1987 and at last I am finding out the story. I know it stayed in the Weedon family until 1961 and I have found a photo of some of the Weedons there in c1900 and Molly Weedon in 1937. Is there anyone I can contact who can tell me more about the house and the Weedons?

re Thomas Tilbury of the Falcon Athens mines in Umvuma Rhodesia/Zimbabwe.
I knew Tom c1964-65 when I was living in his old house on the edge of the abandoned Falcon Athens mines. The mine was barren like a luna landscape, and dominated by the great chimney which I believe has since been demolished. We also lived in Wally Tilbury's house for awhile. I probably have photos somewhere. I found your site by Googling Thomas Tilbury: Rhodesia. - Purely for nostalgia!

I am distantly connected to many Tilburys on various lines, from Bucks and from Essex. It was lovely to be able to confirm what had been passed to me from various people, knowing that you have meticulously checked them. Thank you so much for a wonderful website.
I have also really enjoyed reading the various scenarios of each branch…fascinating.
I note you mention Roger de Turville of Domesday. The village I live in, Thurlaston, Leicestershire, was connected to him.

HENRY THE BUTCHER
I think that I may be descended from one of Henry's younger sisters Eliza Ann Tilbury.Until this year when my cousin came across her nursing certificates in some old papers and I obtained her death certificate , I had thought that she was Eliza Rhodia or Rhoda and four years older. She married in 1887 my great grandfather John Sowerby Martindale, from Birkenhead[who I am told came to London on business caught pneumonia and was nursed back to health by and fell in love with Eliza Ann and that subsequently she worked up there as a nurse midwife, having trained in the St Mary abbotts workhouse infirmary .She wouldn't talk to her husband about herLondon family, and I am told that he put a notice in alondon paper to let them know when she died in 1911 aged 44.[Not the Times I looked}In the 1881 census a young 14 year old Eliza ann was working as a servant for a robert Trewer secretary of a hospital saturday fund in Forest Gate.and In the 1891 and 1901 censuses she gives her birth places as variously Forest Gate and Shoreditch. There is talk among the older family members of a 'german auntie' possibly with Rebecca as one of her christian names, can anyone out there help? There seem to be a lot of coincidences and I would like to find a 'home' for her.On her marriage lines she names her father as Josiah Tilbury [carter by profession]who doesnt seem to exist and herself as Eliza Rhodiah Tilbury aged 24 She must have decided to re invent herself!
thanks

As far as I can ascertain, George was the 5th of 7 children born to Edward and Ann Tilbury. George was born in 1769 and married Sarah Alice in 1790. I could not find any date of death for George. My line follows one of George's brothers also called Edward, and there followed a line of Watchmakers based in London. Should anyone wish to share additional info with me, please feel free to get in touch.

Many thanks, Caroline for youe email. This is what I have dicovered so far. Mary Ann Tilbury b abt 1835, Farnham, Surrey. Her father was Thomas Tilbury a Labourer. On her marriage to James Stacey 8 June 1856, the witnesses were Frederick Shepherd and Jane Shepherd. I have found Mary Tilbury in 1851, working as a servant in Reading. Although on the census it states she was born in Odiham, Hampshire. In the censuses when married to James Stacey her place of birth and age varies. I would be most grateful for any information you have about her. Good luck in your new home.

WOW! My cousin, Ian Tilbury from Sydney Australia suggested I visit this website. I am the daughter of FRANK ALFRED TILBURY b1919 d1995, the son of ARCHIBALD WILLIAM TILBURY and MINNIE ROSA VICAREY who emigrated to Sydney AUSTRALIA in the early 1920's I believe 1923. I would dearly like to make contact with any living relative. My eldest son is performing with the Opera houses in the UK and Europe and he has often asked whether we have any family there. My husband, Ray and myself will be travelling to UK and Ireland next October/November (2008) and it would be a great delight and honour for me to meet some family for tea/coffee and a good chat. Look forward to any contacts. This is a whole new beginning.......

Hi,
I have only recently come across this site. I wondered if the following odd pieces may be of interest.
1) an extrct from "Perambulation of the Ancient Outward Boundaries of the Parish of Chepping Wycombe made on Wednesday and Thursday the 25th and 26th October 1820" (from Potters Cross) "...south to Tylers Green, north corner of Mr Hearn's shrubbery, a X east side of Mr Hearn's house, holding south to a little lane, round a pond, west to John Tilbury's, south east into Moses Wingrove's orchard..." this would put John Tilbury as living on the "back common" of Tylers Green in 1820.
2) I have the 1952-53 High Wycombe Directory which lists the town's inhabitants (heads of households) by address and alphabetically. There are 35 Tilburys listed.
Finally, the manor of Turville was listed as Tilleberie in the Domesday Book.

You ask whose child is Rebecca Tilberry who married James Sarrant (other records suggest his name is James Tarrant)on 11th May 1850. It is Rebecca, the daughter of John Tilbury and Rebecca Buckington or Buckingham, baptised 27.11.1814 at Clanfield. She married James Tarrant ( a widower in his fifties)when she was about 36 and in the 1861 Census they have three children, Sarah, James and George. I think Rebecca may have died in 1864 but I have yet to prove this.

My father died in 1996 aged 85. My grandmother Florence Alice died in 1937 at 114 Sancroft Street Kennington SE11 William then married Josephine Kelly in 1938. William died on 9 May 1943 in St James Hospital. They were living at 44 Aston House, Wandsworth Road SW8 at the time of his death. Josephine (Kelly) went into a convent following his death (apparently took everything with her!). Amazingly my mother never told me anything of this! Hope this gives the site some more info.

I believe I'm descended from Francis Tilbury and his chair-making sons. It would appear from this tree that my Great Grandfather was William Henry Tilbury registered as a chair packer in the 1901 census. My Grandfather was Francis William Tilbury who was born around 1899. My Father often refers to Granny Carter who was his Great Grandmother and he remembers her making lace with bobbins, which seems to tie in with her occupation on one of the census records. As William Henry married Caroline Carter, I'm assuming this is the correct line. I was told by my Aunt that Granny Tilbury (ie Caroline Carter) was connected in some way to the Dashwoods of High Wycombe, which has intrigued me. I had also heard there was a farm in the family at some point - I believe in my Great-Great Grandfather's time, I'd be interested in finding out more. I think there's a Tilbury Wood in High Wycombe and thought it might be connected... I had no idea there were so many other Tilbury's out there and have found this fascinating.

hi
Elisa tilbury did indeed marry Reuben Nottingham. they had 3 children, william (1875), kate (1879) and Fred (1884)
elia was dead by 1891 and reuben nottingham went on to marry jane winkworth.
Unfortunatley william was killed in WW1 in Belgium. He is listed on the commonwealth war graveds site and his name is on the Mennin Gate war memorial at Ypres Belgium.
I have no other info on the other 2 children so i would be deighted to hear from any one who does.
I have a lot of info on the Nottingham's in general, if any one is interested.

Hi there - I came across your website purely by accident and have been having a good look at the Bishops Waltham Tilbury's with interest!
It appears I have a couple of distant connections to people on this list:
1. Joshua Emery and Barbara (nee Booker) were the parents of Elizabeth Emery who married Richard Downs. Elizabeth and Richard's daughter Charity married James Tilbury in 1794.... Joshua and Barbara Emery were my 6 x Gt Grandparents!
2. James Tilbury married Ann Barfoot on 13 Oct 1827 in BW. James and Ann appear to have had 7 children (James, George, William, Charles, Henry, Sarah and Daniel). Ann died in 1842, and James remarried Charlotte Moody on 19 Nov 1843 in Botley - and went on to have 4 children (David, Charlotte Ann, Emma and Catherine (or Caroline) Bessie).
Charlotte married James Sharp in 1873 and Catherine (or Caroline) married George Sharp in 1875. James and George Sharp were brothers and sons of William Sharp and Harriet (nee Phillips). William and Harriet were my 3 x Gt Grandparents!
I'd love to hear from anyone related to these people, to try and put some "meat on the bones" and add some leaves to my ever-expanding family tree!!
Cheers! Alison Hargreaves

My G.Grandfather, Zachariah Wheeler, married a Mary Wether Tilbury at Penn Church on 24th December 1827. If Mary was a member of your family, I'd appreciate any details you may have, particulary date of death.
I well remember the Weedons living in Hazlemere Road where Mr Weedon rented out tennis courts on the opposite side of the road to his cottage. He also sold vegetables from his garden. Molly Weedon, his daughter, was in the upper classes of Tylers Green School when I went there as an infant in 1932.There's a photograph of her as the village Coronation Queen in 1937 in the book Britain in Old Photographs, Penn and Tylers Green.

Hello
I think you have chosen the wrong John T as the husband of Elizabeth Loyns. I believe (and this is backed up by the census's) that the correct John was was born in 1844 to Thomas Tilbury. The census returns always give John T (both english and welsh) as being 17, 27 37 etc (eg. 27 in 1871 when he was in Petersfield). Furthermore, the 1844 John was my great grandmother's (Eliza Jane T) brother, and my grandparents received xmas cards from George Thomas (thus, I am george's 2nd cousin once removed- I think). It is unlikely that they would have received cards were the link through the John you suggest, since James' family was a bit too far removed, much more likely to have received cards from the family of my grandad's uncle. Furthermore, my grandfather (Archie taylor, William's son)) went to live in S Wales for a while whilst a builder's apprentice, John Tilbury was a builder in Wales.
I initially made the same mistake, and only the fact that I went through this very rigourously has confirmed (to my mind) - it was not helped by some contradictory statements in Tonypandy's biography and autobiog, tellingly he states that John T was in his 79th year when he died.
Whoops, just seen your note of ambiguity, I hope this is of some small help
Phil Taylor

Hi folks,
I was delighted to find your claim to Joseph E Saunders and Jane Saunders (who were Grand Uncle and Grand Aunt to my father). Yours is the first contact I have found for his family. Dad’s father died just weeks before Dad was born and he emigrated to Australia with his mother soon after. As far as I know, he had no contact with the Saunders family thereafter.
I am concerned though that I have not found Richard Saunders and Ann Tilby as Joseph and Jane’s parents. Here is a abridged version of the censuses earlier than those you used.
In the 1871 census the widowed Ann, Jane and Joseph E (the chair maker) are living with Ann’s eldest son William (a Tanner), his wife Ellen, and sons Albert and Alfred in Bermondsey, Surrey.
In the 1861 census, Ann is living with husband (a Tanner) (name scribbled) and children William, Thomas (both Tanners), Jane, Joseph Edmund and Edward in Bermondsey, Surrey.
In the 1851 census Ann is living with husband Edmund (a Tanner) and children Mary Ann, William, Thomas, Joseph E, Jane and Edward in Bermondsey, Surrey.
Edmund and Ann were both from High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire. William was born at Hillingdon, Middlesex on the way to Surrey where the family settled for many years.
I have a marriage date for Edmund and Ann Barrett 23 Apr 1837 a High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire.
I can send you copies of census information if you want.
Regards,
Wendy Dent

Hi I came across a link for your site while I was searching for Matson Street, Rotherhithe and couldn't believe it when I saw that you mention No.14, where my Great Grandparents George & Martha Wyatt and their family lived in 1881 with William TILBURY. Unfortunately their surname of WYATT was written as WRUTT (probably misheard, due to their Hampshire accents where they had just arrived from & not Kent as it states), took me ages to find this back in 1986, no computerised records then!
Yes George was a Gardener but I have no details of where he worked, I suppose he could have been working with William. Though I have been told by a distant relative that he was involved in laying the turf at Peckham Rye. Do you know if there are any LCC records that might confirm this and if so, where I might find them.
Great site, just wish I had the time to set one up on my Wyatt family.

Amelia Jane Tilbury b.1877 is my great-grandmother. She did indeed marry George Smith and had two children with him, before marrying my great-grandfather, George Bowles with whom she had 9 more children. Two of these nine children are still alive - my grandmother who lives nr. Clacton, Essex England and one of my grandmothers brothers, Joe, who lives in Perth, Australia. It is believed that Amelia left George Smith as he was quite violent... how true this is I'm not sure, but either way she was definitely married twice and died aged only 50 of heart and thyroid complications in 1928 - my grandmother was only 10. I'd love to know more about the Tilburys - I have always been led to believe they were Jewish... but am now discovering this may not have been the case.

Henry was a soldier, joined the 60th rifles in about Jan/Feb 1856, at the age of about 19, and spent most of the next 10 years in India. He returned to UK in Oct 1866 and re-enlisted, went back to India in Sep 1868 and returned to UK in Dec 1872. According to one source (http://members.aol.com/tilbogen4/carolines.htm), George's wife was Susannah Ann Kent, m. 2c/303/Alresford (4th quarter 1881) but I should like to ask how certain this is. I found the marriage of a George Tilbury to a Sarah Ann Brown in the 4th quarter of 1882 2b/875/Portsea. Sarah Ann is from Wickham (daughter of John Brown from Scotland) according to the 1861 census and this agrees with the entry for Sarah Ann in the 1891 and 1901 censuses. I just received a copy of the birth certificate for Alice Eliza TILBURY, b. Jan. 24, 1847 at Bramshot. Her father was William TILBURY and her mother was Maria Tilbury, formerly CHANDLER. Occupation of father: Paper Maker. Registration district Farnborough, 1847 birth in the Sub-district of Headley in the County of Southampton.
Your website does not give Maria Tilbury's maiden surname, so you might want to add it per the birth certificate I have cited above.
Alice Tilbury and her mother (Maria Chandler Tilbury, a pauper, b. ca. 1815) were in the Headley Workhouse, Hampshire in 1851 (per 1851 Census).
Did William Tilbury abandon his wife Maria and daughters(including newborn Rose Maria Tilbury) in the Headley Workhouse? The Parish of Headley Baptisms records show: 1851/07/06 Tilbury, Rose Maria; parents William/Maria; occupation of father, Papermaker, abode Headley Workhouse; note: "William lately gone to America." (http://www.johnowensmith.co.uk/baptisms/bap18131901/bapt-T.htm, accessed Nov. 5, 2005).
Maria and her girls emigrated to America, arriving in New York June 1852 on the "Margaret Evans" ship (Ancestry.com New York Passenger Lists 1851-1891). One of the girls, Alice Eliza Tilbury, married George Morrell/Morrill in 1866 in Brant Co., Ontario, Canada. Their daughter Annie MORRELL married Allan ATKINSON. William Gordon Atkinson, their son, was my maternal grandfather. He married my grandmother Hilda BEXFIELD in Saskatchewan, Canada.
I do not have any more information on William TILBURY. Does anyone else?

I believe I am descended from John and Sarah Chalcraft's son Albert (they appear in the 1841 census of Headley). This family left Headley about 1845 and do not appear in the 1851 census there. My Albert was married to (H)Ellen (Slater) of Ireland, in Toronto Ontario Canada 1863. I am trying to prove this is the same Albert.

I am the great grand daughter of Henry Pike Tilbury, killed in WW1. My mother was Valerie Irene Tilbury (before she married in 1968) and her father was Hubert Charles Tilbury, son of Henry. Hubert, my grandfather, died of cancer in 1962. He had two children, my mother Valerie, born in 1942 and her brother, David born in 1943. David sadly died of cancer in 1987, but has two daughters and a grand daughter; who I will be visiting later this week.
My mother knew Henry's wife, her grandma, and she died in the 1960s; but we didn't know Henry had been lost in WW1. My mother only knew her grandma had been a widow for many years and her late husband, Henry, was never mentioned.
Its lovely that he is remembered here and I hope one day to visit his grave.
If you would like further details of the Tilburys in England who didn't emigrate be sure to get in touch. I haven't studied your Site properly yet as I'm in a rush today and on my way out; but I will sit down and read everything very carefully later in the week.
I have just started to search the Tilbury line so this Site is very interesting to me.

Hello there.
I have been looking at your Tilbury-Bone tree on the internet. and have spotted what I think is a mistake, possibly a typing error?
I think you will find that William Tilbury chr. 13th June 1824 in Clanfield, married Eliza Rogers (not Ropers) in the June Quarter of 1852 in Catherington (2c 171).
My connection with the Tilbury family is, that my 1st cousin 3 times removed, Ann Sarah Hobbs born 1851 in Clanfield, married Henry Tilbury (son of Thomas and Jane Long)born c.1852 in Clanfield, on the 25th October 1873 at St Mary's Church, Portsea.
Kind regards
John Rogers

Hi Carol in answer to your email, sorry I can't be of much help on the history of clanfield, I only know the old rising sun was the village pub, very old, I think it had a thatched roof, it was a very popular meeting place for the Matelots from HMS Mercury and all of us were disapointed when it was replaced with a new modern pub, the atmosphere was not the same, I have been trying to find out some info on Leydene house where we were accommodated, last I heard they wanted to turn it into apartments it used to belong to a lady Peel,if anyone has photos of the old place and can show them on this site It would be nice to see it again, as we live in New Zealand now, no chance of visiting the area

I was interested to read about the RISING SUN pub that was built in a day. I was a serving wren at HMS MERCURY at the time, and used the old rising sun pub. I remember the new one being built It was in 1960 or 61 not the early 50s I met my husband in the old one and we were very sorry when it was replaced. The landlords name was Jim McDonald and they had a daughter Sarah we often talk about the sausages on a stick they used to serve never tasted any so good since. sylvia
