Hi William
Re Matilda Coxhead and Arnold Merrick
Thank you for the information attached to the guestbook. I have most of the information you provided and more. I didn't know about baby Ann Merrick who died aged 8 months buried 24 Jan 1835. By deduction she was born around May 1834. I believe this is the same child named Matilda Ann Merrick born 12 May 1834 and christened 3 June 1834. I am not sure about Matilda dying in Lancashire. I thought she was born in 1800 making her a bit older than Arnold. She was a dress maker and Arnold was a servant and later a butler. Living in the same street in 1841 was Charlotte Coxhead with children and I was wondering if she was a sister in law to Matilda. Perhaps the same Charlotte who married Thomas Coxhead in 1822. I am looking for Matilda's parents and siblings. Cheers, Ion

I am also interested in Matilda Coxhead who married Arnold Merrick. She is my 4th great grandmother. She married Arnold on 12 Oct 1828 in the parish of Kennington St Mark. I think they were both servants. Her daughter Margaret married John William (Jas.W) Sparks and they came to Australia. Would be grateful if anyone information regarding ascendants exists.

Hi William. Still having trouble with Thomas Coxhead & Charlotte Bean. According to the Census he was born in 1790/91. The only 2 possible parents I can find for a Thomas Coxhead born c. 1790 are Thomas Warman Coxhead chr. 27/7/1791 parents William & Martha Warman, Hungerford & Thomas Simms Coxhead chr. 24/2/1790 St. Giles, Reading parents Henry Coxhead & Sarah? possibly Simms. As you know Thomas William Coxhead s/o Thomas & Charlotte took the name Williams when transported presumably after Mary Williams but she did not m. George Coxhead until 1798. Perhaps Williams was just an extension of his middle name. The Sheriff family seems to have plenty of Coxheads but the email address given does not reply.

Cheers,

Gary.

In my records I have:
George Coxhead b 24-11-1799 at Aldbourne son of Jonathan Coxhead and Miriam Barrett (they married at Aldbourne 23-10-1796) George Coxhead married Hannah Newman at Aldbourne
You can see all the family in the 1841 Census. They had son George 15y - dau Ann 13y - son Stephen 11y - dau Elizabeth 8y and son William 6y. Could not find family in the 1851 Census. In the 1861 Census George (an Ag Lab) and Hannah are shown with grand daughter 7y b 1854 Aldbourne Wilts.
Hope this detail helps you.

My great great grandfather was George Coxhead, born Hungerford c1802. I have not been able to trace his parents. I have a lot of information about George, his son and his grandson (both George Turner Coxhead). The first GT Coxhead was for a time a policeman in the Met., as I believe was George. Neither appear in your list of Coxhead police officers. I'm very happy to share all the info. I have. I have tried to use your Index of all records, but there don't seem to be any workable links.
Congratulations on your site - amazing, just what I have been looking for!

Hello Gary
Here is some data that you can consider and recheck
---

Thomas and Charlotte Coxhead and variants do not show up in the 1841 and 1851 Census. No Charlotte at all. As for Thomas Coxhead and variants I can find two of them
One listed in 1841 aged 51 born c1790 (makes him 28 yrs of age at marriage in 1818. He is a painter – Middlesex living at Chelsea
Likely a widower as Charlotte is not listed. He has three daughters – Harriot 20 – Emma 16 – Louisa 14,

1851 Census: Thomas Cockhead ‘ widower’ a painter aged 60 with daughter Emma 26 a dressmaker at Chelsea
---
The other listed in 1841, aged 50 born c1791 makes him 27 yrs of age at marriage in 1818. He is a ‘stoker’ and it seems he is in a boarding house at St Pancras.

I have a death of Charlotte Coxhead died 1824 in Berks. That is five years after 1818. Maybe she died before the 1841 Census

Emma Cockhead married period 1853 -54 - Harriot Cockhead married 3-1943 - Louisa also married
Thomas Cockhead died 2-1852 at Chelsea ref 1a 95
Also I found Charlotte Bean b 4-10-1801 at Bosham Sussex. Makes her 17 yrs of age at marriage in 1818

To Kathy Cox,

Concerning my mother Flossie May Coxhead. Her mother Emily Sarah did not marry George Farthing until 1916 and her last child Dorothy was named Farthing. Flossie and her three younger brothers were all named Coxhead, even though William Coxhead had been dead for some years. So I will probably never know who her father was as he is not shown on her birth certificate. Shame, as it means I can't use any of the wonderful Coxhead research! regards Jill Dwyer

Thanks.

My late father, Stanley Albert Coxhead, had 13 brother & sisters, many who emigrated from England to Australia and had families, so very curious to know if there is any link to your family?
Would love to know more as both my parents are gone now and I only know few bits and pieces. My father always thought we originated from France in Napolionic period and we had an Arms House in Ramsgate, Kent.
My cousin has been doing some family history research but hasn't come up with much.
Hope to hear from you. kind regards...julia

Hello Bill,

Thanks for your e-mail, and the info. on the COXHEADs. My wife and I now live in Devon, but Ann has connections to IoW via her great grandfather Alfred TRIM, a miller on the island between 1860 and 1880ish. I don't believe the GREENs on the island are connected to me, as our family come from Bywell St Peter, 10 miles west of Newcastle-on-Tyne.

I wasn't aware of the Peter COXHEAD you mention, but at present I do not intend to deviate too far from my direct COXHEAD line, which seems to lead to a Lawrence COXHEAD, who married Ann BLACKMAN in Shinfield, Berkshire 8/10/1740 (IGI). His father was Thomas COXHEAD, who married Elizabeth ELKIN(G)S at Swallowfield, Berkshire 18/11/1700 (IGI).

I have yet to get the parish registers to make a detailed search, and confirm the IGI info. So, I will now wait to hear from you if you find anything interesting Bill.

Best regards.
Colin

Hello Bill

It's been a while since I contacted you - my grandmother was Gertrude Beatrice Coxhead, daughter of Robert Coxhead and Sarah Locke.

I was wondering whether you or anyone else reading this has heard from Anne Sandford recently. I have not heard from her for a long time and I'm a bit concerned.

I have some theories to kick around as to the parentage of John Coxhead and Mary Blundy Brackstone/Braxton. Will add later.

Aksana L. Coxhead (aksana.coxhead(at)gmx.net)

Dear Mr Coxhead,

I am doing ancestry research on the Coxhead and Woolford families and have come across your fantastic site in addition
o stumbling over several of your forum contributions.
I am a descendant of John Coxhead (son of William Coxhead and Harriet Kibblewhite, b 10 Dec 1810, East Garston, Berkshire)
who married Mary Jane Woolford on 8 Dec 1836 in Pilton Somerset. The family emigrated to Sydney, Australia, in 1855 aboard the Gloriana.
I am descended from their son Elijah Coxhead, his son William Henry, his son Alan Edgar (my grandfather).

As yet, my research is via internet, led by instinct and the data I do have, and I am looking for more specific information before I set about
digging into archives proper. Hence I would be very obliged if you could share any information you may have.
Of course, I am more than happy to share whatever you may feel useful information in my knowledge.

Also I would be interested to learn about who they were, i.e. I know that John and Mary Jane must have been working class,
with one of their daughters a domestic servant and Elijah a monumental stonemason in Sydney (a business he passed on to his eldest son,
William Henry Coxhead, my great-grandfather and an early amateur journalist in Australia;
Elijah also is listed in the Insolvency Index on NSW State Archives, so his business may have been less than satisfactory).
So I imagine they sought their fortune abroad in Australia. I managed to find out the ship, the Gloriana, but as yet have not come
across a passenger list, nor from which port the Coxheads sailed, Plymouth or London? Or did the ship make port in Bristol, whereabouts they lived?

I am most obliged for any help and exchange in this search and am looking forward to hearing from you most curiously.

Best regards, Aksana L. Coxhead

Wondering where the rest of the site is accessed? I have the book on the NZ Coxheads and visited Hungerford Aldbourne and Oxford Nov 2007. Each well worth a visit. Can recomend visiting the Church at Aldbourne and lunch at the Blue Boar.Did not find evidence of Coxheads in the area now but given the poor nature of their living standards in the 1800s we understand why the families emigrated around the world, in our case to Auckland where they readily established themselves as farmers

Can you explain in brief. Thanks Grandmother Rosina and ancestors
Comments:
Bill, I have been reading some old postings on Rootsweb when I was looking for more information on Rosina, my grandmother. I am still looking for her between her birth in 1865 (25th June),her baptism in 1873 and her marriage in 1886 (25th December). I have the certificates for all of these although unfortunately the baptismal certificate does not give names of godparents and on this she is Rose not Rosina. Her mother, Martha, seems to have disappeared after her birth. I cannot find any record of her death and her father Joseph died in 1876, in 1871 census he appears with only youngest son Henry (aged 12) of Martha, Rosina and eldest son Joseph there is no sign and Henry disappears after 1871. I suppose it could be assumed that both sons may have emigrated but whatever happened to Rosina as a child? When she marries she is living in James Street, Marylebone and one of the witnesses on her marriage certificate is E.Coxhead - no indication if male or female.
I would be grateful for any ideas as to where else I can look to fill in the missing years.

I would like to tell Pam and Jill that my mother told me her grandmother (Emily Coxhead) remarried a man whose last name was Farthing and had more children. Apparently, according to my mother, Emily did not like the reference to the lowest value coin so she named those children Coxhead. This could explain the name on the birth certificate for Flossie's.

My grandfather was John Armitstead Wilson, not Armistead as corrected by my 3rd cousin Andrew Belsey. I am in touch with Andrew and corrected his correction with him. Armitstead was the last name of his father's business partner. His father and Mr. Armitstead had a serious falling out. My grandfather, as a consequence NEVER used his middle name unless he had to (e.g. marriage certificate, of which I have a copy.) He was always called JA by his friends.

My great grandmother had 9 siblings. I have photos of all of them and quite a collection by the youngest, Helen Cordelia Coxhead Ford, who as an early amateur photographer.

Hi Bill. I am married to Shirley Blayney née COXHEAD, the cousin of Anne Sandford (one of the co-authors of the Coxhead Family 1999 book). You can see this at http://www.keithblayney.com/Blayney/Coxhead.html [e-mail me for the password if you are interested].
I was delving around your "under construction" website, not sure if I was supposed to be there as a non-member downloading little titbits like your cxhd_b_m_174p.doc and CXHD_William_1827_p.jpg, when I thought I might contact you and see if I could access any family tree established on ancestors of the NZ Thomas Coxhead (like the above William).

Hello Bill,
Spent some time going down the wrong line but have finally made some progress in the right direction. Grandmother Rosina Coxhead was the daughter of Joseph Coxhead & Martha (Gibbons)and not Charles & Mary. Joseph born in East Garston was the son of William & Harriet, he and Martha had sons Edmund (1850 - 1857), Joseph born 1853 before moving to London where son Henry was born 1855 and Rosina in 1865. In 1871 census Joseph is shown as Widower with son Henry aged 12 but no trace of any other children. I believe there was at least one other daughter born to Joseph and Martha but so far cannot find any record of this her name Eliza or Elizabeth. An E.Coxhead was a witness to Rosina's marriage. I will keep on searching and will let you know if I succeed in finding more.
Very much enjoying exploring this site.

My John W. Cox's children names:
William R. Cox, b. 1848
John ?P.? Cox, b. 1850,
Calvin S. Cox born Feb 12th 1852.
Sarah Virginia Cox born Dec 19th 1854.
White Everson Cox born April 7th 1856.

James R. Cox, b. 1860,
Geo W. Cox born Dec. 19th 1862
Mary Jane Cox born June 20th 1864.
Flora Cox born Oct 6 1868

If any of these names might be familiar to you, please let me know.
I feel that my Cox family came from England, etc., and are possibly of Scot origin.

Hi William,
I have an update for an entry in the marriages screen. You have a query against Keziah Coxhead who married Henry Stephens. This Keziah Coxhead was the daughter of John Coxhead and Mary Ann Barrett. Keziah was born in 1831 and died 1894 in Greenwich aged 63 ref: June Qtr 1d 571. John Coxhead was the brother of Kezia Coxhead baptised 1806 and son of Aaron coxhead and Sarah Platt of Sunninghill.

This is a great site keep up the good work.

Just to say hello from New Plymouth in New Zealand. Spring is sprung and well on its way. Great to see the Coxhead Family growing. I noticed a list of eleven wills for Coxheads of Hungerford on the Genuki site. Just in case there are a few people who may have missed them they are well worth a look. They can be viewed individually. Some list children and other family as well.
1680 John Coxhead.
1685 Elizabeth Coxhead.
1688 Robert Coxhead.
1701 Richard Coxhead.
1706 Joseph Coxhead.
1712 William Coxhead.
1719 Richard Coxhead.
1726 William Coxhead.Wife Elizabeth.
1750 Robert Coxhead.
1771 Joseph Coxhead.
1794 William Coxhead.Wife Elizabeth.
Feel I need to learn to read "Ye Olde English language" to find out just what they are trying to instruct the lawyers of the day to do. I was able to copy the above for my records just in case one of them should be mineoneday? I am ever hopeful. I am still clacking away at these keys and recording more family. My computer recently fell over again and I still have to complete the 7,000 or more Coxhead records I have gathered in New Zealand and overseas. I am also in the completion stages of my mothers Smith's from the Outer Hebrides in Scotland who moved to Beith in Ayreshire about 1814. Anyone live near Beith. I would be interested in contact. Cheers, Anne Sandford.

Hello Mary Edwins

Mary, do you think you can now write a little story about how we found your long lost family. For those who don't know a couple of weeks ago I managed to bring together Mary (Coxhead) Edwins and Richard Coxhead her step brother together. If you can do that, please e-mail it to me and I'll try to add something to it plus some photos.

I shall enter that in the Site if its OK by you.
Hope you can do that.

Dear Bill, thanks for your reply. It seems that if William Ernest died in 1899 he could not have fathered flossie who was born in January 1903. She always referred to him as her father and his name appears on her marriage certificate so it appears there may have been something she was not told. I only have an extract of her birth certificate and may try to get a full copy. If any other

You had a question about Walter and Ernest Coxhead:
"1. I have found some Coxhead relations in Brantford Canada - Ernest and Walter. Do you have any information on them?
Walter was born 1879, the son of William and Eliza.(I still cannot find their marriage c 1866/7). Then nephew Ernest joined him in Canada. He was the son of William, the eldest son of William and Eliza who married Emily Gardiner in 1891."

Ernest was my grandfather. He was born in 1894. He did come to Canada and lived with his Uncle Walter. He went to WWI and was gased severely and left for dead. Thank goodness someone paid attention to him.

Hello Bill. Just a brief note to let you know that Joyce Wilson of Inglewood, New Zealand passed away on Thursday 14th April 2005 at Taranaki Base Hospital in New Plymouth. She had suffered a heart attack. She had a major part in the printing, construction and research of the New Zealand Coxhead Family Book and was continuing her families story at the time of her death. A lovely christian lady, with a big heart, she will be sadly missed by the New Zealand Coxheads.
I have now extracted all of the Coxhead Births Deaths and Marriages up to 1990 so if anyone needs a look up for names I am happy to do so.
Cheers to all Coxheads around the world, from a very cool Autumn day in New Zealand. We have just had our second snowfall on Mt. Taranaki.Winter cometh.

Hello Bill
another piece of my jigsaw
it appears that William 2 Coxhead married Eliza BENNETT [name obtained from a son's birth cert.] and there are some references to Bennetts in East Woodhay Eliza's 'place of birth' in census returns. I have found a ref for an Eliza Bennett b 1845 so will get the cert. to confirm her family.
As far as I can see William I spent time in Hamstead Marshall as he was there in 1851 and wife Hannah was buried there in 1844.

Do you think/know that the Coxheads of HM are linked to the Coxheads of Kintbury ? By the way there is a website on the
village of HM which explains the links with the Craven family, the land owners and mentions Coxheads

He has sent me 35 photos of his / my family and ancestors. I'm really delighted. He sent a photo of Peter's grandfather Christopher Moyce Coxhead born 1857 Isle of Wight. Never expected this. I shall be adding more photos of my Isle of Wight ancestors soon.

I met Peter (M. Peter Coxhead) when we were counselors at Camp Robin Hood, New Hampshire. Peter, of course, ran the dramatic arts program. Then, between my sophomore and junior college years, I traveled the US and then to London and Paris. I was fortunate to have Peter at the dock to pick me up and stay at Crouch End for 3 weeks. There, I met and enjoyed a wonderful group of theatre and other folks and traveled London and surrounds. The group collectively read and discussed plays endlessly - did I ever sleep? His joy in the theatre was so impressive and I was delighted over the years to see his honors. I treasured that all too brief time with a creative and jovial, but serious, artist. Recently, I had cause to review many photos, including slides and from my trip to Peter and England. Would you like to have them for your records?

Hi Mark

I have posted part 1 of Coxhead marriages, that is A to F.

This List is not in HTML its too big a job to convert it and the other two sections that is G to M anf N to Z. So, it will have to do for the time being. As it is I cannot make a neat looking list and cannot do proper editing. Cannot use colour or change size.

Shall post the other two sections later.

Hello Lesley

Please note. In that part of Oxfordshire some Coxhead folk shortened their family nane to Cox. This is in the records.

Also my g-g-grandfather Thomas Coxhead (b 1772 - d 1851) his 1st marriage was to Mary Ann Cox in Newport Isle of Wight 1794. There must be a great number who shortened the name. A friend of mine Tom Coxhead changed his name to Tom Challenge. He is a race car driver. Very fitting !

Hi Bill, Don't know what happened there, but I'll try again. I have just started on my husband's side of the family and his surname to follow is COX. So it was interesting to find a link to Coxhead - Cox in Oxford. As Oxford, Berks, Bucks and Wilts is where most of our leads run, it would seem that our families were already connected. When and where is my next project!

Hello Bill,
We have communicated before re Coxheads.

I am still searching for Rosina Davies' (nee Coxhead) ancestry. Was she the daughtrer of Hezikiah Coxhead , the 1851 census shows that he had a daughter Rosina (age 12) but I have been unable to find her marriage. My Rosina married John Thomas Davies some time before 1864

hello again.
1. I have found some Coxhead relations in Brantford Canada - Ernest and Walter. Do you have any information on them?
Walter was born 1879, the son of William and Eliza.(I still cannot find their marriage c 1866/7). Then nephew Ernest joined him in Canada. He was the son of William, the eldest son of William and Eliza who married Emily Gardiner in 1891.
2. Hannah Coxhead who died 25.11.1844 (aged 40) was the wife of William labourer of Holt Wood so it would seem she was Hannah Bailey
3.Have you seen the website showing Berkshire enclosures details. It is linked to the record office

Helo Bill, Just a small correction on the Mary Braxton-John Coxhead site. I have entered Mary Braxtons snr's husband as Thomas Barrett and he that his first wife was Mary Pizzie. This should read Mary Coleman.I must have been having one of my genealogy overload moments.
Also a new addition is the burial record for Miriam nee Barrett, later Coxhead then Brind, mother of George and Rachel (Chivers) Coxhead, wife of John Coxhead m.23.10 1796(he died 23.2.1819 aged 45? Aldbourne)and later who later remarried William Brind m.27.10.1821.
Miriam Brind was buried at Aldbourne 23 February 1855 aged 82 years. A Merriam Barrett bapt. 3 July 1774 at Aldbourne daughter of Sarah Dash and Stephen Barrett is most likely this lady.

Hello Bill, I would like to add a few things to Mary Braxtons list.
This is our Mary(Blundy)Braxton who married John Coxhead 21 December 1824 at Aldbourne. Mary Blundy was the daughter of Mary Braxton and was born Hungerford, but baptised 3 April 1795 Parish Church Aldbourne.I guess her father must have been a Blundy? Marys mother had another known son Joseph Bate Braxton baptised 20 June 1791 Aldbourne. Both baseborn children. Joseph used the name Bates and married Hannah Hay 23 Oct 1813.Five known children. They lived in the village of Snap (Snape) beside the Coxhead family most of their lives. They can be seen on census records. Mary Blundy Braxton's mother became Mary Barrett and aged 75 years is recorded as living with the Coxhead Family (John and Mary at Snape) in the 1841 census.
In the Aldbourne church 29 July 1804 Mary Braxton snr had married Thomas Barrett a widower of this Parish. John Coxhead was a witness? They had one daughter Miriam Barrett bapt.14 March 1805 and she was buried 21 March 1805. No further children.Thomas Barrett was previously married Mary Pizzie in 10 June 1798. No known children. Mary Barrett died at Snap Cottage 21 December 1847. Buried Aldbourne. Yet to check death for Thomas Barrett.
Mary and John began their family before wedlock, this I am sure of, giving us the following baptisims. Charlotte 31.8.1817 Hungerford, Robert Coxhead Braxton 10.2.1820 Aldbourne, John Coxhead 21.8.1825 Ramsbury. Martha 19.8.1827 Ramsbury, Eliza 26.12.1830 Aldbourne, William 10.2.1833 Aldbourne, and Charles 1.5.1836.Aldbourne.
To complicate matters for research, at the same time Hannah nee Newman and George Coxhead, almost neighbours were having their family.
George Coxhead bapt 24 Nov 1799 Aldb, was the brother of Rachel bapt. 11 March 1798 Aldb.(later Mrs George Chivers,Hungerford)
and son of Miriam Barrett (later Mrs William Brind)and John Coxhead. (Need to locate Miriam Brinds death)
Miriam and John were married 23 Oct 1796 Aldb.
Back to George and Hannah, they were married at Aldbourne too 17 April 1820.Hannah (Jo-anna) Newman bapt 10 Feb 1799 Aldb, baseborn daughter of Hannah Newman. They had a large family of 8. All children baptised at Aldbourne.
John Coxhead 25 March 1821 married Sarah Wherrill, 5 Known children,
Amos Coxhead 2 Feb.1823 married Sarah Newman,7 children. George Coxhead 11 Dec 1825 married Eliza Coxhead,
Anne Coxhead 13 July 1828 possibly Mrs Young?, 1 daughter.
Stephen 26 December 1830, married Elizabeth Hatherall, 5 known.
Eliza 28 July 1833 married Robert Fox after 2 illgit Coxhead children, and 2 Fox.
William Coxhead 5 July 1835 married Hannah (Anna) Hemmings,
7 children
and lastly Thomas Coxhead 31 May 1846 married Hannah ?
2 known children.
So another batch of Coxheads arrive to complicate matters more.
As to Eliza Coxhead daughter of John and Mary and George Coxhead son of Hannah and George Coxhead, They married at Aldbourne 2 May 1846, he 20 and she 17. Children were all baptised at Aldbourne.
Robert Coxhead 18 Sept 1846 married Sarah Locke 12 children, lived Lambourne,
William 24 Dec 1848 married Ellen Swatton 1 dau Sarah, Matilda 14 July 1850 married George Anstie, Anstey, Anstee 3 children
George Coxhead 10 April 1852 Batchelor,
and Martha Mary 16 Setp 1860 married Thomas Davis, Davies 5 possibly 6 children. So it was up to a few sons to carry on the Coxhead name.
I have extensive research on these groups, but if anyone has any additions I am always pleased to hear from them. The Family seemed to have connected to all the local names in Aldbourne. They stayed in the village of Snap(e) for 3 generations and when the village finally collapsed in the 1890's where did they all go? So many questions? If anyone has answers I am always here in New Zealand.
Anne Sandford.

Hello Bill, Great to see the site is growing. I have a "NEW" interest re Coxheads in the Oxford area. Looking at the website I can see there was big family living there.Have you sorted which line this Oxford group originates from and if they have any connection to the Aldbourne/Hungerford group. Guess that research is on going?
Question: Has anyone a listing for this following lady. Mary Braxton, single woman and later in 1826 wife of John Coxhead of Aldbourne was in 1820 living in the Parish of St Thomas in Oxford. She was pregnant with her second child during this year. Father of child, John Coxhead of Aldbourne. Papers held at the Berkshire record office show she had "Removal order" papers served on her and she was taken from St Thomas back to Hungerford, her home Parish. Where was she staying/working/living with in St Thomas, Oxford,1817-1820.As we know poverty was rife then and most parishes seem to transport people when they could not support themselves. A copy of the Removal Order still exists and his document is apparently quite rare find.I was very lucky to have such a good score for my genealogy records. This was thanks to the local record office in Berkshire being so helpful. This male child was named Robert Braxton son of John, Bapt Aldbourne 1820.He came to New Zealand in 1842.
Can you recommend any connections?
This couple also had an earlier child a daughter, Bapt. Charlotte in 1817 at Hungerford.Amazingly enough "Bastardy Papers" are available for this child too. Another quite rare document but not as rare as the other one just mentioned. The Berkshire papers in 1819 advertise that John Coxhead, a Grocer of Aldbourne is the father of this "Bastard Female Child" born to Mary Braxton, a single woman.
Question.Has anyone seen a Charlotte Coxhead marriage about 1832 for her, Anything on any census records St Thomas or anywhere in Wiltshire 1841.She would be about 24yrs and was possibly married by then.
Finally a third child named Martha Coxhead bapt 19.8.1827 Hungerford, daughter of the above couple.
Question. In the 1841 census she would have been about 14. Anyone seen her on a census in Wilsthire/Oxford? These questions have stumped us for a while. Can anyone help.
I see you got the Aldbourne records Bill. They look nice on the site. Good page setup. Anne Sandford.

Hello Bill.
Thought you might like this for our website. It applies to all of us.It was sent to me by a new found English cousin Carol. Anne Sandford.

STRANGERS IN A BOX.
Come, look with me inside this drawer,
In this box I've often seen,
At the pictures, black and white,
Faces proud,still,serene.

I wish I knew the people,
These strangers in a box,
Their names and all their memories,
Are lost among my sox.

I wonder what their lives were like,
How did they spend their days,
What about their special times,
I'll never know their ways.

If only someone had taken time,
To tell, who, what, where or when,
These faces of my heritage,
Would come to life again.

Could this become the fate,
Of pictures we take today?
The faces and the memories,
Someday to be passed away.

Make time to save your stories,
Seize the opportunity when it knocks,
Or someday you and yours will be,
Strangers in a box.

Bill,
A small correction: On the list of Coxhead researchers can you correct the entry by Mervyn Britton. Isabelle (b. Dec 1860) was the daughter of GEORGE FREDERICK COXHEAD (1827-1895)who was the Engine Smith.
I have the birth certificate at home if you need to see it before changing. Hope this helps. Mark

I was in touch with you a few months ago. Since then I have established that three Coxhead brothers from Oxfordshire, England, came to the Township of Pilkington in the County of Wellington, Ontario, Canada.

Caesar & Jonas in 1848 and William in 1849.

So now I would like to trace these families ...searching for a Caesar born 1880 (I believe).

I had found a Caesar born 1874 - died 1964 (but Ray's grandfather died in 1961)......but was not able to find further information on that person. This information came from a sourse you referred me to (Stacy Clark)

Do you have any other information based on three brothers from Oxfordshire, England that might lead me to Caesar Coxhead 1880 - 1964. Caesar married Gertrude in 1903 or perhaps a bit earlier.

I do not know where Caesar was born (possibly County of Wellington) but do know that he worked for the City of Toronto, Ontario (grounds keeper I believe) and that he is buried in Toronto.

Hello Pam. Yes I do remember you. Still have your letters. Nice to see you here.
About your William likely born late 1830s. This what I have in my file.

This is most likely your William 2’s birth:
1838 William Coxhead b Hungerford, Berks ~ 2-1838 ~ Reference 6 180

This detail gathered from the Census:

1861 Census
William Coxhead ‘agr/lab/carter’, age 22, b Kintbury c1838 at West Shefford, listed in 1861 Census Berkshire, (info from Coxhead researcher Walter Barnard of Essex)

William Coxhead b c1839 in Kintbury, 42 yrs 'head' marr 'agricult' liv Midgham Marsh, listed in 1881 Census married to Eliza age 36, b East Woodhay Berks c1844, son William b c1867, dau Eliza A., dau Emily, son George, dau Mary Jane, son Walter b 1880 in Bradfield Berks.

Census 1901: William Coxhead 62 b c1838, Kintbury Berks, Living at Thatcham Berks ‘Agric. Labourer’

William 2 married Emily Sarah Gardiner, 18-8-1891 (I have Gardner & Gardiner)

I also have William Coxhead of Inlease Farm burial 20-8-1830 aged 65, (b c1765) Kintbury St Mary. Berks.

I also have a William Coxhead b c1828 In Kintbury, died 16-5-1830 aged 2 years, Kintbury St Mary. There is a William born Inkpen in 1828, likely the same.

Also William Coxhead married 15-5-1828 in Kintbury. Could be father of above child.

How did you figure Eliza’s maiden name was Lovegrove ? I found Elizabeth Lovegrove b 20-6-1830 at Aldermaston Berks, that’s next to Midgham !
In the Census it says East Woodhay that is 9 mls west of Midgham.

Hoping this helps you. Regards.

Hello Paul Stephen.
Thanks for visiting. Hoping Monica Mary is well. I've done a fair amount of correspondence with her since 1996. I know here Birthday is on New Years Day. When I started this Guestbook a couple of months back, the 1st entry was by James Frank Coxhead in Chile. Shortly after the Guestbook went blank and I lost his entry. I must start entering all I know about the Coxhead Family in Chile. They wrote to me a few times. Paul, any chance of sending me some pics so to show them here.

Regards Bill.

I should have looked to find this site a long time ago.

I think my Aunt Monica was in touch with your Father a few years ago. We are some of the Lancashire Coxheads.

The origin of the Coxhead family in Chile was I think my great great (posibbly another great) Uncle Thomas Coxhead who originally went to Bolivia and eventually made his way into Chile.

I'm at work now, but I'm going to send this page link to myself at home for some more reading.

cheers

Can you explain in brief. Thanks Descendant of Eliza & George Coxhead. Eliza's 3 brothers emigrated to New Zealand, she stayed in Aldbourne and died there.
Do you have any old Family photos ? Thanks. Yes - of my grandmother
Comments:
Reading about "Coxheads in New Zealand" by Joyce Wilson. She states that George & Eliza Coxhead (she calls her Elizabeth but her birth certificate shows her as Eliza)emigrated to Australia in 1855. This is not true. Eliza and George's oldest son was Robert Coxhead born in 1846 (he is my great grandfather). George died of Dropsy in Snap, Aldbourne in 1863 and Eliza married again to William Ball and had two further children by him. Eliza died in Aldbourne in 1897. I would be interested in making contact with any of the descendants of Eliza's three brothers and also in purchasing a copy of the Coxhead book.

Hi William. Firstly, thanks for the site. Very interesting & well laid out. I'm not sure if our families are connected but if I give you a few brief details you may know of a connection? The earliest research I have is to my 3x Great Grandfather James Coxhead (bn.1775 Southwark, London - d.1865 Lambeth Ldn) Married Jane Harwood (1803 St. Martins, Westminster). I descend through his son Joseph (1819-c1885), Joseph Albert (1839-1906), Henry Ebenezer (1870-1943) and my mother Hilda Edith (bn.1930). I have a lot of info on James' descendants, all in London, with the exception of his eldest son Henry (1805-1865) who emigrated to Vic, Australia with his family on the Dalhousie in july 1852 (his wife Mary Headford (1806-1861)& children Emma Theresa, Ebenezer, Henry Augustus, Mary, Charles Frederick, Harriet Sophia. I have traced quite a lot of descendants of these also. If you have any info on these Coxheads I would be grateful to exchange info. Look forward to hearing from you. Regards, Tony Aarons - London UK

Hi William, I was wondering if you could help me with my research on my branch of the Coxhead tree. Here is the information I have. I am having trouble finding out about James Coxhead who was the father of my GGrandfather Arthur John Andrew Coxhead Born 20/02/1875 Kensington.James Coxhead was married to Ann Andrews 06/04/1868 At St George Hanover Square. One of the witnesses was Emily Coxhead (I don't know what relation she was)I believe that James & Ann Coxhead had two daughters as well Edith Born 1876? and Mabel Born 1881?
A.J.A Coxhead Married Caroline Maude Frewer 03/11/1895 in Chelsea. James Coxhead was a Cabman at this time. On the 07/08/1910 A.J.A Coxhead Married Ada Violet Louise Taylor in Lewisham. James Coxhead was listed as Coachman (Desceased). I hope this information may be of some use.

Best Regards

Excellent site. Only just discovered these web pages. When did it go "live"?

I will be happy to contribute something on the Coxheads in Deptford (1860 - 1900), and before that in Limehouse (1821 - 1850).

I am beginning to think that I am descended from Benjamin Segar Coxhead, so the reference to Hannah SEAGAR seems very relevent.

Mark

I received a call today from a lady in Indianna looking for Raymond Coxhead. My husband is Raymond Coxhead....but not the one she was looking for.
We live in Belwood, Ontario, Canada. (South Western Ontario)
Until recently, I new very little of the Coxhead Family.
Caesar Coxhead -1890? to 1961 - married Gertrude....
both born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
(All decendants also Ontario)
Three children - May,Cecil and Walter

May married (last name) Geary
Two sons and one daughter

Cecil had one son Fred.
Fred married (about 1959)Miriam
Two sons - Bruce and Brian

Walter 1907-1986 - married Florence Baird 1908-1986
Two sons - Vernon 1931 and Raymond 1945
Vernon married - 1960 - Margaret Hayes born 1939
3 Children - Linda 1962 Douglas 1963 and Gregory 1974

Raymond married - 1960 - Joan Eickmeier born 1938
Two children - Kimberley 1962 and Kevin 1963
Kimberley married 1992 to Glen Reeves born 1961
Kim has two children - Shawn 1996 and Nathan 1998
Kevin married 1988 to Nancy Prior
One son Matthew 1994

That is pretty much all I knew until 1995 when Ray & I moved from Toronto to Belwood and found a Coxhead in the phone book for Arthur (1/2 our from here). But the man had just died and we were not able to make a family connection.
We thought nothing more of this until one day, Ray's brother, Vern, mentioned tht he recalls going to Arthur as a very small child to visit people. (Vern is almost 5 years older than Ray.)
I then went to the Wellington County Archives to do a little bit of research.
I found that brothers Jonas & Caesar from Oxfordshire, England came to Canada in 1848 - joined by another brother William in 1849. They settled in the Township of Pilkington, County of Wellington. (Belwood, where I live is also in the County of Wellington).
Based on this, I think that there is indeed a connection between Ray's family and the the original brothers who settled in the County of Wellington.
Someday I would like to follow the tree and make the connection.....but right now I have too many other commitments.
It would be appreciated if you would forward this message to the lady in Indianna. I typed all this out but, from this site, I do not know how to forward the information to her. MORRIS12@aol.com
It would be appreciated if you would let me know that you were able to do this.
