Very nice, informative website . . great work in progress! I have much better photos of the gravestones for James B. Russell and Olive Jane Horton Russell (my great grandparents) . . will send them if you'd like. Note the discrepancy in the birthdate of James B. Russell, as listed on his gravestone and his actual birthdate. For some reason, his gravestone has his wife's birthdate inscribed -- JBR's birthdate was 20 Nov, 1833. Also, Mary Polly Bell Russell isn't buried in this cemetery. We believe she's buried at a cemetery not far from the site of the old trading post about 10 miles north of Ft. Scott, KA (not far from where she died), though not for sure about this. . sure like your website!

Comments:
While visiting your McDonald County Missouri website, I was browsing through the New Bethel Cemetery records. On the record for Claude Bennett, the years listed are incorrect. Instead of 1703-1743, the correct years are 1903-1943.

Claude Bennett was a cousin to my father, Clyde Bennett. My father made the headstone about 25 years ago, and evidently, the years didn't get marked very well, or have worn off.

Thanks for a great website!

I just read the notice of Aaltje Soelle Elrod on the internet 'Find a Grave'. My mother was an Elrod and I am a descendant of Christopher and Aaltje Elrod.

There are a lot of my Elrod family buried in the Bassett, AR cemetery. This is where Robert Lee Elrod, my great grandfather, settled in the late 1800s. Many of them still live in this area today, namely Bassett, West Memphis, Wilson, Joiner, Harrisburg. Robert Lee's father, Noa Ben, may have been with him when he settled there.

Robert Lee married Elizabeth (Lizzie) McFatridge in 1887, probably in Bassett, AR. She was from Union County, IL.The story goes that they met on a river boat on the Mississippi River.

My grandfather Walter Elrod, son of Robert Lee, moved to Missouri in 1938. Most of his branch live in St Louis, Kansas City, Malden and Parma. Walter and his wife, Eva Hull Elrod, are buried in the cemetery at Malden, along with my uncle, Charles Elrod, and several other members of my family..

Regards,

Jim Alexander

Comments:
Daniel Sherwood (1749-1838) and Frances Linthicum (1749-1806) were my 5th great grandparents. Their daughter Eleanor Sherwood (born 1776) married Jeremiah Field (c. 1764-1830). From what I could tell with regard to your "Find a grave" sites, you are descended from Eleanor's brother Hugh who married Jeremiah's sister Rebecca. Jeremiah and Rebecca were the children of William Field, Jr. (bef. 1727-1805) and his wife Lydia, maiden name unknown.

Jeremiah and Eleanor had 11 children, one of whom was Elswick S. Field, born c. 1808 in Randolph County, NC. He married Guilianna Lindsay (1807-1885) in Guilford County, NC in 1831. One of their sons was John Andrew Field (1846-1883) who married Mary Adeline Wilkinson in 1865. One of their sons was Ernest Marion Field (1866-1904) who married Mary Rhetta Bell in 1888. One of their sons was John Levi Field (1902-1963) my grandfather. I never knew him as he died before I was born.

In going through your "Find a Grave" sites, I was also interested to see the Fly name. On my grandmother's side of the family, I am descended from Jesse Fly who lived in Camden, Kershaw County, SC in the late 1700s and early 1800s. He obtained a land grant there in 1784. I have tried to connect him to the Fly family in Virginia, but haven't had any luck so far. The names on your graves are familiar to me from trying to sort out the connection.

My Fly line goes as follows: My grandmother Eunice Virginia Stearns (1906-1983) Mrs. John L. Field was the daughter of Dulin Benson Stearns (1863-1962) who was the son of Rusha Elizabeth King (1837-1893) Mrs. Dulin Stearns, who was the daughter of the Reverend Harmon Daniel King, Jr. (1805-1906) who was the son of Elizabeth Fly (dates unknown) Mrs. Harmon Daniel King, Sr. Elizabeth Fly was the daughter of Jesse Fly, Sr. and his wife Elizabeth Rochelle, who were in Camden District, Kershaw County, SC in 1784. I have as yet been unable to determine who the parents of Jesse Fly were. He spelled his name variously Fly, Flye and Fley. He may be connected to the Fley family of Charleston, SC, but I tend to think it more likely he descended from the Fly family of Virignia, as did your Flys.

I would very much like to compare notes with you on our genealogy.

Best Regards,

John Field Pankow
Asheville, NC

Comments:
I have been looking for my great-grandmother Francis Ledbetter/Leadbetter Click Spears LEE Alexander for over 20 years. The amazing thing is I had most of the information, but hadn't put it together correctly.

My aunt had told me her name and surnames of her husbands. The LEE marriage she apparently hadn't known about.

While at the McDonald Co. Courthouse I had found this record:
Wm H. ALEXANDER of Buffalo Twp to Frances LEE of Pineville on March 28, 1883 by J.D. Rudisill, MG at the residence of the bride.

I had no idea what the given name of this husband was. The record doesn't say Miss or Mrs., so I assumed this was NOT my great-grandmother.

I don't remember finding this record until my cousin Nora sent it and the listing from the Anderson Cemetery. I'd sent the site to her.

McDonald County, Missouri Marriages, sorted by Groom
Book B - 1877 through 1881
LEE Lewis R. SPEARS Franky (res of Creed Hunly) Jul 12,1880 Simon Kelley, Baptist MG

Even if I had found it, I'm not sure I would have caught it, I have never heard her referred to as Franky. Once I checked the 1880 Census, it all came together. Francis SPEARS was 41 years old. Lewis R. LEE was 73 years old. They were married after the census record was taken.

So far, I've not found Wm. H. Alexander in the 1880 census.
Neither he or LEE are buried in the Anderson Cemetery either, unless they have no marker.

I do know where my great-grandfather Lewis SPEARS is buried. Francis parents were Lewis and Mary ? Ledbetter/Leadbetter and other spellings in census records.

I really want to THANK "Stephanie" for this site and her help. The photo on site wasn't very plain and the date didn't agree with my information. She replaced the photo for a better one and was able to correct her date. Since I have other family there, she added add'l information that I had.

So, THANKS again, and when I have more info for this site, I'll send it for her to check and see if she can use any of it.

My husband is Jimmy Sooter, his father is Norman Sooter, his father was Trumon Wesley Sooter, his father was Eli Sooter, and his father was William R. Sooter. I am searching for old photos, especially one of William R. Sooter. I know there was at least one, maybe more!!! William R. along with one of his brothers, Albert was killed at the close of the Civil War. They are buried in unmarked graves in Carroll County,Arkansas.
I would love to hear from anyone else working on the Sooter/Fly/Brown/Lee or Lea/ Matlock Families.
Thanks again!
Brenda

Transcribed documents (Russell letters, Civil War Pension Application, Sooters vs Cherokee Nation)are priceless! I have many connections to persons mentioned in these documents.
