Hi I am researching my family history from Northants up to 1900 and found your transcript of the Pattishall Parish marriages extremely useful. It helped me identify the first wife and natural mother of Robert Neal Smith born about 1858 Astcote Northants England.

I loved your webpage. It is so interesting to see the research you have done! I have been curious to find out about my father's family. He doesn't have many living relatives and nobody knows much about the family. He says they were "Pennsylvania Dutch" which from my understanding and study of German is actually German. Where do you find all the records? How do you start looking and how would you know if the family's name was changed? Devoe doesn't sound very German to me.. Thanks again for sharing all your wonderful research! It is very enjoyable!

Hi - My daughter was asked to do a heritage project for school and as she started working on it, we realized how little we know about our North Dakota relatives. (We live in Atlanta, Georgia.) And, in trying to find information we stumbled onto your page!
My mother is from Linton, North Dakota and her grandparents were German immigrants from Russia. I think the town was Neudorff, Russia. Her Great Grandmother was Christina Docter (not sure about the spelling) and her great grandfather was John Germann (again, I'm not certain yet about the spelling but am checking!!). The tale is that John was a soldier in Germany and/or Russia and when he reached the Dakotas he became a preacher & farmer. If you happen to run into anything on these surnames, I would lvoe to know! We're also looking through handed-down cookbooks for clues and cool recipes to try. Thanks so much! Colleen

Hi Coleen:
I ran into your site googling various Brandner web references. Perhaps we can connect sometime to discuss Brandner Family History. My own ancestry was Brandner's directly from Germany around 1880 to Central Wisconsin. It is interesting to note various groups of Brandners around the US and world. For instance one of my uncles ran into Brandner's in South Africa that also immigrated from Germany. And I also note the groups in South Dakota, apparently, now I see, probably immigrants from Russia.
Our family had a reunion this past year, we have one every 5 years or so and I have a web-site that we used for it and it is still online at http://www.lc.capellauniversity.edu/~164156/
Also, did I read you are in or were in Alaska? Another one of my uncles lived in Alaska (Sitka) for 30 years or so.
One other area I'd like to visit one day is the Brandner Tal in Austria. I wonder if that area was the origin of even the Brandners in Germany. There is a Brandner Glacier there that I'd like to see before it melts away due to global warming.
Cheers! Dan

I found your web page last night. In my haste I forgot to mention one name in our family. The names I am interested to "connect" are: Jungling, Meier, Gieser and Eberle. I see you mention the Eberle name. My people are from the Bessarabia area. I've also heard the name Grossliebenthal.
We have only sketchy information. My grandparents came to America through Ellis Island in about 1902 (Gieser) and 1910 (Jungling). My father was Jacob Jungling and his twin, Andrew, later changed the spelling of his name to Yengling. He was a merchant in the Bismarck, ND area. He died in his 40s, sadly. My father, Jacob Jungling, wife Emily (Gieser) and brother, Lloyd, moved to "West Dakota"--Lodi, CA. I was born there 13 years after my brother.
Would love to find information about our kin!

My dad was born in Oberfeld, Germany, now Obory Poland. His mother, Pauline, died in child birth (his - I suspect) and he was sent from the family farm after an accident that crushed his foot. He knew his fathers name to be Wilhelm but it could have been Frederich Wilhelm since I found a marriage record for such about a year after his birth. Thanks for "listening"!

You have a great website and have obviously put alot of hard work into it. Keep up the good work.
I have just started researching my Grandfather Fredrick Herman. His wife Barbara Schmautz, I have alot of information on but can not find anything on the Herman side. I know the Schmautz/Hochhalter family were from Rohrbach, Worms, Odessa area. I know they lived in North Dakota and then in Montana where they both died in Missoula. My father was Robert Herman and he was born in New Leipzig ND and was one of 10 children.

Dear Coleen:
Thank you for you diligent work. I was adopted in 1955 in Anchorage, AK. My birthmother Clara Jean Kish was from the Callendar family of Point Possession. Some listing on your site list this family as Aleut. I thought they were Tanaina. Apparently my great grandfather & uncle were leaders of their village at Point Possession.
I hope to continue to explore your great website. I really thank you, I can appreciate the degree of research that you are doing.
Sincerely
Penny Jean Vogt

Greetings,
Wonderful job you have done over the years.
I have information that other's may find useful and some photos from the turn of the century and earlier.
I'm only beginning but have a good start. My info is in ancestry and I'm the my gfr maternal ggp are Peter Hummel (b: 1866 Odessa, Russa) and Katherina Litz (b: 1861, Odessa,Russia), I've found the ship manifest and they arrived in North Dakota in the late 1800s, my mgf Wilhelm Friedrich Hummel (b: 1888 Odessa, Russia-d:1949 Elgin, ND) married Katharina Bader (b: 1891 Wishek, ND - d: 1975 - Elgin, ND, 2nd marriage was to Christ Hillius also from Odessa, Russia). Katie Bader-Hummel-Hillius was the daughter of Johannes Bader and Christina Vossler who were born in Alexanderhilf and Darodiena South Russia respectively in the 1860s. I have that line back to five or more generations. The Hummel/Litz lineage is only positively accurate back to Peter Hummel and Katharina Litz. I have notes packed away from when my mother was still alive (Erla-Ella Hummel, b: 1913-Elgin, ND) and more old photos that I took notes from her and wrote on the back of. If anyone would like to contact me and share information and or photos please feel free to write. My age is 48 and I hope to compile a solid base for my son over the next 20 to 30 years. :-) Thanks for the chance to meet up with others and putting the pieces of the family back together. Sincerely, Kathy Devlin

Any suggestions on how I might begin my search? I did some work years ago with the Mormon Library but really didn't get anywhere. It seems the info available now is so tremendous that it is like looking for a needle in a haystack. My grandfather, Christian Will and his wife Emelia Lutz immigrated to the US in the very early 1900's from the Bessarabia, South Russia area and settled 17 miles north of Elgin, North Dakota which is where I was born nearly 68 years ago and lived for 21 years. I will appreciate any suggestions you may have.
Your web site is most interesting - I am sure that I cannot even imagine all the work you done on it. Thank you so much.

My maternal grandparents were in Alabama and I have traced their ancestors (GRAVES) only back to 1800 in Georgia and (JOHNSON)to 1800 to South Carolina. There are Germans mixed in with the maternal side on both the Graves and Johnson side (ZEIGLER, RHINEHART, STROCK). You have a beautiful website. I would love to create one for my family.

I thoroughly enjoyed your site. I am TRYING to find out some information for my sister in law. Her maiden name is Matha. She knows relatively nothing. She has her father's birth certificate stating that he was born of Joseph Matha in Montgomery, Minn. Her father told her he has some indian ancestry but she knows little else. Where can we go for advice?

I just started researching and found out that my great grandmother was from Germany and greatgrandfather was from Russia. So now my quest begins. I hope I can find more websites as informative as yours. Thank you.

You have provided a host of wonderful information in a very colorful environment which I enjoyed. My birth family's last name is Shuffler so I skipped through the list of names, just in case. I was adopted in 1942 and found the Shufflers in San Diego in 1994. Searching is interesting and challenging. I have never located my birth mother who would be 84 this year. Thanks.

Did I see a few Jews in the Family tree? I believe Jews were prohibited from owning land/farming about the time the clans moved over to Russia and headed for the States. In general Jewish lands were confiscated and they were forced into the cities where they became "city folks". Could that be the reason they all moved? Several last names suggest they were among that particular migration, and the date/time is about right. I'm especially interested in the name Gaub, I know someone with last name of Golub and he has the same dead end in Eastern Russia.

Otto & Marie (Mielke) Fraasch are my great grandparents. Their daughter Elsie is shown in one of your photographs on your site - I have this photo framed (wasn't she beautiful?). My g.grandfather, Otto, was a professional photographer in the Seattle area at the turn of the (last) century. Some of his work still turns up in antique shops (especially of early Pike Street Market). His wife Marie died young - he was so distraught that he placed the girls in an orphanage in California. My mother met him (Otto) only once as a little girl and said she frightened her because he had a huge, white, walrus-type moustache! According to my mother, my grandmother (Elsie) never could forgive her father for placing her in an orphanage....
Enjoyed your website...
