My Great Grandmother MARY JANE HOWE'S sister ELIZABETH HOWE married an HORATIO RATCLIFFE from TODMORDEN. My Grandfather William Cartwright Worrall was born in Todmorden and the family lived at Honey Hole, in 1901.
My Dad remembered going by train to Todmorden as a child with my Grandad to visit Horatio Ratcliffe, who worked at an ice cream making factory and Dad was given lots of ice cream! This would have been late 1920's-early 1930's.
I think this factory must have been John Greenwood's who was also a fish seller. He made ice cream. Does anyone have any memories or information? It would be lovely to hear from anyone who knows the family.

Hello Linda, it's along time since I was digging Crabtrees up. I'm now trying to find which mills in the area would be dying and where fustian cutting might take place. My Holmes family are living at Clough, Walsden in 1851, 1861 and 1871. John was the dyer while son George was the cutter. I know they would work within walking distance but my granny walked about 2.5 miles each way to the mill she worked in. Always love a trundle round your site. Thanks Anita

Good site. Came across it while trying to link the families of two houses in Bridge Lanes, Heptonstall/Hebden Bridge in the 1841 Census. In one house lived John (40) and Mary (40) Cockcroft and their children William, James, Crossley, Hannah, Elizabeth, Thomas, and Abraham. Next door lived Abraham (60) and Hannah (60) Cockcroft and their children James, Elizabeth and Midgley. Temptation is to think that they were related though I cannot find hard evidence of this. Were they relatives of yours? John C

Hallo everyone; I am on the track of my greatgreat grandmother, Mary Stansfield's family. Her parents were Abraham and Hannah, and she had an older brother William. They lived at Swineshead from 1800 - 1804 at least. I know there were rather a lot of Abraham, william and Mary stansfields, but I'm really sure that I have found William, married (of course) to Mary (nee Whitaker of Bolton), and with just one 10 yr old son, Abraham, in Birmingham for the 1851 census. They had other children; Mollie was registered at Patmos Chapel on the 15.3.1827, but only Abraham with them in 1851. Any one else with these relations?

Hello Dorothy
You helped me a few years ago so I am trying again!
I came through Tod on my way to Bacup, and called in at the TIC. Found a few streets to visit and photograph. Nice to know about the places because I have read so much of your wonderfull website. I was on my way to meet Rita Hirst in Haslingden. I gather you two used to work together.
My family is the Grahams, James was at the Blue Ball, Dulesgate. On James' grave in Bacup there is an inscription
Brighard, their son who died December 13th 1861 in his 3rd year - interred in St Mary's Todmorden. I can't find any reference to this. Online parish clerk included. Strange name but I am sure I copied it right. I know it doesn't add to my line but just for completeness thought I would try you.
There were fresh flowers on James' grave so I am now trying to find his relatives, my relatives, got a thread on Rossendale online - some leads!
Thankyou for your time and your so interesting site.

Just been reading Joan's entry re GREENWOOD.
My great-great-uncle was a WILLIAM GREENWOOD TOWNEND (1849 – 1923) who was born in Todmorden and spent the first few years of his life there before moving away with his father’s (Benjamin Townend) work.
I have always wondered where his middle name came from. I am told that it is often the maternal grandmother’s maiden name and this may well turn out to be so. I know that his mother was ELIZABETH SUTCLIFFE and came from the Langfield/Walsden area. Her father was a JOSEPH SUTCLIFFE but I have yet to discover details re her mother or to track more details down regarding this branch of the family.
Benjamin Townend (1822 – 1895) and Elizabeth Sutcliffe (1825 – 1894) married on 21 October 1848 at Eastwood Independent Chapel, Todmorden.

Looking for any data regarding the family of Dan Crossley who was an auctioneer and furniture dealer in the Hebden Bridge/Todmordon area. Dan died in 1906 leaving his widow Clara to raise 6 young boys. They carried on the business and one of them had a newsagents. The boys were Wilfred, Clarence, Dan, Cyril, Baden and Frederick.
I found a photo taken by Jack Uttley which shows the furniture shop and I believe the person to be standing ourside was Clarence Crossley.

Searching for details on John William Heyworth, born in Todmorden in 1875 (musician). He married Edith Stead who lived with her parents William and Grace initially at Jumble Hole (Census 1871) then later (census 1881) in the cottages opposite the old coach house at the back of Mulcture Hall, Eastwood, Todmorden. I have postcard of Mulcture Hall dated 1904. We believe Edith was school mistress at Eastwood B School in 1897 (any idea of location or where records will be kept?) Edith's sister Sarah (Sally) married Esau Greenwood who was an official at Naze Bottom Sunday School/Church (any ideas on location of Naze Bottom Church or where records will be kept?). As a result of trawling through the churches section on your site I noticed a 'Large four sided stone surmounted by a spire'at Eastwood Chapel with details of the Stead family on. We now have quite a lot of information on the Stead family, but not on John William Heyworth. Any help would be appreciated. Last but not least, excellent site came up by searching google.

Have just been reading Mary's entry.

Am trying to find out about SSarah, Florrie and David Johnson who used to live at School House Chapel St. Todmorden. Can only find them on 1901 cencus and my Mum thinks that when she was small they were caretakers. Also,my grandfather Wilfred Sutcliffe (Cornfield Terrace) served in the Royal Army Medical Corps during the 1st ww and am having difficulty finding any info. Would he have volunteered in Todmorden? He was deaf(presumably from cotton mills) so would not have been A1.

Just waiting for receipt of the marriage certificate and I'll be straight back here as there seems to be hundreds of Laws listed on the various pages - there must be a connection:-)

I've found this site very interesting and so full of pieces of information I'd have taken ages to compile. My interest is in two families (my great-great-great-grand parents) - Abraham and Hannah Stansfield, and Betty Cunlifee/Barker. For the first family I have dates of birth, from a sampler stitched by their daughter Mary. Mary's older sister Alice was born in 1802, and died in 1805 - I have found her in the list of burials at St Mary's church! - thank you so much!
The other family is more difficult - Betty Cunliffe married first ? Cunliffe, and had a son John, who moved with Mary Stansfield to Bolton (I have good records of them as he founded a newspaper, the Bolton Guardian, which is on film in Bolton Local Studies centre). I don't know what happend to ? cunliffe, but she later married ? Barker, and had a son William Barker, who was 10 years younger than John, and became Vicar of Golcar. There is plenty of evidence they all lived in Todmorden in the 1770-1830 period, and I knew nothing of it! I hope to come and visit next year (I live near Cambridge, and grew up in NW London!) Which record office would I go to for Todmorden records? I realise it has skipped from Lancashire to Yorkshire! Best wishes, Gill Aslett

Greetings Linda and Dorothy,
It's been almost three years since I first signed your guest book. Your site is as terrific as always - what an astounding resource you have created!
My grandfather was Edward Greenwood from Todmorden (1866-1915), father Thomas (ca 1831-1916); Edward's mother was Hannah Fort (ca 1835 - 1901). Am especially interested in those names and any connections to them.
My visit to the site this time was spurred by a message from Roger Barton, kindly passed along by my cousin Anne Field in Australia, about his Blacka and Fort relations.
Best wishes,
John,

I found your site in April 2008 by typing a name into a google search while taking a class on British genealogy. The name was Philip Crowther. Many thanks for the information on your site about Philip Crowther and his wife Betty Barker. I already knew quite a bit, but your site gave me a few more tidbits of information and a great history of the area. I am a descendant of the Crowther family of Todmorden. My great grandfather, Philip Crowther came to the U.S. at the age of 17. As far as I know, myself and my sisters are the only surviving descendants from the full English line. My great great grandfather, John Philip Crother, had a bigamous marriage in the U.S. of which there are many descendants.
I just reread the article I copied in April and decided I needed to explore more of your site.

I have just found another tidbit of information. There is a death record for James William Fielden who died in Mexico City in 1914 at the approximate age of 59. I have also found that he had children from his first marriage in England. I'm wondering if this James William Fielden could be the same man who lived on Rochdale Road in Whitworth with Alice Fielden (his mother), his wife Elizabeth, and children Alice Hannah, and Eli in 1881. Does anyone see a connection? James William Fielden in my great-great-great-great grandfather.

First found your site in June 2006 when I was looking for the marriage of Mary Ellen Ball/Joseph Dickenson. You advised me of their marriage @ Knowlwood Primitive Methodist Church 9th March 1875.BMD 9A300.
At the time you thought that Mary Ellen may have been a relative of the Stevensons as Stones Villa was where she was living.
I have never connected Mary to the Stevensons however I have recently found out that Joseph Dickensons father Miles Dickenson who was a Primitive Methodist Minister actually preached @ Knowlwood P.M during 1872.Miles had 4 sons & a daughter & at least 3 of his sons inc.Joseph were lay preachers for the movement.
I love this website it is so informative & so interesting.I will be back.

I have just found your website and signed your guestbook as asked as I am interested in this area as my late dad was born and brought up here as was his dad and so on back we go as far back as history will allow us. I have only ever visited Todmorden on 3 occasions in the past as I knew nothing of my dads past. So I look forward now to read your following website. I am about to pay a visit in early June this year looking for a bit of information etc. and have been told to visit the information office in the town to start with.
Thanks

Returning for another visit. Had a swift reconnaissance trip to Christ Church graveyard last week, but didn't get very far! I had a grave reference from your site (Grave19/20 Row 2) a piece of cake I thought. BUT I don't know where Row 2 is and despite approaching from different angles I couldn't find it. Does anyone have a plan of the Churchyard showing where the different rows are? I had also received information from someone on Genes Reunited that some gravestones had been laid flat to form a pavement, including 1 for the Dawson family, but I couldn't find them. Can anyone help?

Their daughter Ophelia was my great-great-grandmother, married to Charles Pulfer. Knowing nothing of my father's family, only the names of his parents.
Found your site on Rootsweb, saw Todmorden, flagged it and have now spent a rainy morning looking at it - hours.

I was born in Walsden and spent many happy days of my childhood playing on the Rec, climbing trees in Henshaw woods and swimming in the canal. I found your site while researching my family's history. The Hartleys arrived in Walsden at the turn of the 20th century and I believe they lived in upper Alescholes farm for a while. My great grandfather Herbert Hartley was a mason and the entire Hartley family have stayed in that field (my Dad, Derek Hartley was an engineer, but all his cousins are/were builders). I googled Todmorten and found your site as I have only recently started tracing my family tree following the death of my father's sister who was the last in that generation.
Before she died she gave me the name and birth date of her father (who wasn't mentioned much in any family discussions.)
I have now traced back to my great great grandfather JAMES RILEY(born Rochdale abt 1819.)His son YOUNG RILEY My Great Grandfather) immigrated to Australia in 1883 with his wife Sarah Whitaker and my grandfather was born a month after they landed in Port Adelaide.
I enjoyed your site greatly as it gives me some background on my roots. I will probably try and trace some of my Australian family before looking for any UK relatives.

I live in the US, and was tracking the only sibling of one of my "brick wall" ancestors, in hopes on finding some breakthough information, when thanks to Google, I happened upon your site. While it has not provided the breakthrough I sought, it certainly has given me lots of information, direction and inspiration...As one who enjoys all the historic aspects of genealogy research, I have been intrigued by trying to track this "peripheral" relation.
I am looking forward to the continuation of the transcription of gravestones at Christ Church, as through your website, I did find that my gggrandfather's only known sibling, Jane Ann Chambers (nee Hanagriff) is indeed buried there.
I have found more detail, but the basics are this:
Jane Ann Hanagriff Chambers is buried with her husband, James at Christ Church, Todmorden, Row 36.16 …Your website currently shows only that Jane Ann died in 1860 and was 34. James’s death date was 20 Jul 1885. James’s brothers Richard and Thomas are also buried here.
Jane Ann Hanegrieff m. James Chambers in St Louis, MO, USA. Ancestry.com “St Louis, Missouri Marriagesö lists date as 25 Nov. 1846.
Jane A. 34, bn OH & James Chambers, 39, Bookbinder, bn England in 1860 US Census in Quincy, Adams Co.,IL, Ward 1 (9 June 1860) – Children listed: Emma M, 12, bn. MO, Leonora H, 8, bn OH, Matilda E. 6, bn IN, Charles W. 3, bn IN. Child Charles W. does not appear after this one census…neither does Jane.
Apparently, they shortly then moved back to James's home, Todmorden..
Through various UK censuses, it is known that James and Jane Chambers' daughters all survived through 1901, but can only find one that married, and I rather doubt there are descendants:
1.Emma Montague Chambers b.@1848 St Louis, MO USA
2.Leonora Holt Chambers b. @1851 Cincinnati, OH USA m Augustus Spencer Oct-Nov-Dec quarter 1897 in Ormskirk, Lancashire
3.Matilda E Chambers b @1854 Indiana USA
Should anyone have any further information on this family, I hope you will share it with me!
Thanks to you both for creating such a fabulous site - I'll be back!

Thoroughly enjoyed your site. Loved the history especially about Dobroyd Castle which I have distant links to. My brother- in-law Geoff Norman used to be headmaster there when it was an approved school and my sister Judith and her husband were house parents. She eventually divorced her husband and married Geoff....SCANDAL! I, myself lived in Todmorden until I was 50, marrying, first at Cross Stone Church, Easter Saturday 1959 to Kenneth Bridge, a member of Todmorden Old Brass Band, following divorce I married again and we became licencees of the Rope and Anchor and Weavers Arms Public Houses until my lovely husbands death in 1989 when I moved away.

My partner and I purchased 'priest booth' in November 2006 and as you can see from the pictures are shown on your website it was in a 'very derelict' state. However, we have now re-built the shell using a local builder.
We are very interested on the date this farmhouse was built as we would very much like it's original 'date' etched onto a glass window. We beleive it dates back to approx 1670! If anybody has any other information please could you contact us.
Many thanks,
Vicky

Dear Dorothy and Linda,
I'm a lacemaker and currently researching what are known as the "hanging bobbins" these are as the name implies a lace bobbin made to commemorate a hanging, so I was extremely interested to discover your site (having done quite a bit of research into Miles Weatherill mysel) and read your article about him - for I don't know if you are aware such a bobbin was made to commemorate his execution. Would like to make contact with you for an e.chat if possible please, have some info that you might be interested in.

Hello, have just come across your site, I am trying to find an ancestor of mine who was born in Todmorden/Walsden in 1843, a John Caygill. He was a Colour Sergeant in the Royal Marines at Portsmouth, where I found him living with his wife, Lavinia and children. Sadly, he died quite young and as a consequence Lavinia remarried one of my relatives.

We have started researching our family tree. We all live in Dorset now but we hail from Heywood,Lancs having moved to Poole in 1967. We know our grandfather lived in Heywood in early C20 and possibly our great grandfather Frank but we know on our family name goes back to Todmorden and possibly Walsden. Frank was born in 1868 and is recorded on the census in Todmorden - that is about as far as we know so far on the line back but we have other ideas - we do not know why Frank moved to Heywood - that would be interesting the know.

Hi, a very interesting site. I'm fascinated by pics of old Tod and yours is one of the websites I've been browsing. I came across a pic in the Alice Longstaff collection which is just called York Street Todmorden and is undated. I puzzled over it for days, not recognising anything, until my son said it looks more like Church St. and the Strand with Water Street going off on the right. What do you think?
I've read somewhere that the present buildings on Water St were built in the 1860s to replace earlier ones, which I think are still there in this one. I reckon this pic (lithograph?) was done in the 1850s or early 60s, because there's one of Church St. c1860s and the building on the end of Water St. has acquired windows, which are not in the 'York St' pic.
Anyone agree?
kind regards to all, Nan

Was looking for my Grandfather's family. His father, 1. Joseph Bottomley was born Abt. 1867 in Lancaster, Lancashire, England, and died 1908 in Lancaster, Lancashire, England. He married Elizabeth Schofield 24 Apr 1886 in Christ Church, Lancaster, Lancashire, England, daughter of Edward Schofield and Susan. She was born Abt. 1860 in Malta.
We are unable to get any more information other than Elizabeth was noted on a census in 1881 as a cotton drawer. So I am thinking that my family must be connected to this one.

I must say I have found the web site fantastic, very informative. My great grandmother Mary Hannah Widdup was born in Todmorden in 1860, married John Edward Jackson (from Halifax) at St Pauls Church Todmorden. I have just recieved Mary Hannah's birth certificate it states she was the daughter of James and Elizabeth Widdup of Lane Bottom, Stansfield, I believe that is near the church she got married in.

In looking for information on the place name of Horsfall I have references to Horsfall near Todmorden dating back to at least 1,200. My ancester, William Horsfall, b. 29 Jan. 1780, d. 26 May 1856, m. Mary Taylor 25 Nov. 1804, lived in Almondbury but also served in the Military and many of the other relatives were also from towns around Huddersfield. Most worked in the weaving industry.

Your site has been of great help in locating part of my family's history --- landless, starving immigrants from the West of Ireland who arrived in Walsden some time before 1860, lived in a place known as Rose Cottages near Clough House; presumably worked for a time in the mills before moving on into Yorkshire after the collapse of the cotton industry during the American Civil war. They're still there!
Found the site through Google; supplied a missing link ; keep up the good work!

I found your website after trying to find information about my 2 x great grandfather and his family. Samuel Mason lived on Higher Summitt with his 11 children and wife Sarah Ann. He was previously a Brickmaker and was born in Manchester. In 1901 he is listed on the census as a chip potato propietor. I am trying to find out information about this. I have the details and it is around the Todmorden Road area.
Just looking at your website there is a wealth of information that I can look at and get the feel of where my ancestors lived.
Can anyone help me to locate anything about Samuel Mason and his children. I know Emma Mason married a James Cryer in 1892. My great grandfather Arthur Mason was born in 1880 in Littleborough and as far as I know never talked about his family to my mum or grandfather. It would be nice to try and find someone related to someone out of those 11 children

My first experience of your terrific site, what an achievement! Although I haven't lived in the Tod/Cornholme area since 1959 Todmorden will always be my home town. Born in Beaconsfield St 1932 we lived up Bacup Road and on Brook St before emigrating to Cornholme/Portsmouth where we lived at Shed St and greenfield Terrace. Educated at Shade School, Roomfield, Cornholme Junior & Tod Grammar. With my pals Dougy Eastwood, Stephen & Gordon Crowther, Jackie Gore, Frank Lord, Ed Banks, Eddie Hargreaves, Ian Holt, Norman Pickles and Raymond Bairstow organised the very successful Cornholme Methodians football team. Researching my family tree I am related to the lacy family through my mother and the Davey family through my grandmother and Janet Fielden one of my Lacy ancestors married into the Postlethwaite family Tailors of Todmorden. Keep up the good work.

I believe I have been in contact at some time in the past but lost the details so this was a Yahoo search.
I noted with interest your new project concerning farms.
I am researching a family of sheep farmers. One member of the family farmed Higher Greave Farm, London Road, Langfield Moor, Todmorden for a number of years in the 1940s/50s. I would be interested in any information or pictures of the aforementioned farm.
I have much of the family documentation which includes quite a number of photographs, some of which I have so far been unable to get any information about and I have reason to believe they were connected with the family member who lived in Todmorden. I am keen to identify the individuals concerned.
My research is a voluntary unpaid undertaking and I am quite happy to share information but with one criteria, namely that no one makes financial gain. It has already cost me considerable time effort any expence which obviously I'm not complaining about but just pointing out one reason why would hope others don't exploit.
Kind regards
eric

Hi Linda,
Thank you for replying to my email.
All I know about James is what you have, he was born in 1779, although the only James I can find in the records is one in 1780 with parents William and Elizabeth from Walsden.
James died at Moorhey and was buried 24 aug 1836 at St Mary's.
I have tried to find his marriage to Betty but I can't find it anywhere although I think it must have been between 1800 and 1804. Thank you for the information on Hannah I have been trying to find who she married.

Re entry by descendant of Gibson Cockroft. See me prior entry - descended from the same family, though not Gibson. 1841 census gives the household of George Cockroft, aged 70, mentioned several times on this site, and my ancestor, David, probably his son. Gibson is listed with them, aged 55, warehouseman - maybe George's nephew? If you are researching, you may find it helpful to know that this area was in the Parish of Rochdale, in the hundred of Salford, and some entries are under Stansfield township, so there are various ways in which it is entered in census material. Hope this helps! I have also discovered Cockrofts in the Netherlands in the 17thC - obviously escaping religious persecution. Some went from there to America, like the Pilgrim Fathers.

Congratulations to all concerned, your web site is an absolute gem and one of the best I have come across. Having spent three joyful hours looking through all of your pages on Todmorden I felt I had been to place and not just sat at my computer! Found the site through a goodle search, I am doing research for a friend on his house and one of the previous occupants I found at his house in 1861 & 1871 had been born at Todmorden Hall, Lancaster, which is what led me to your site. He is James Taylor and what a delight it was to be able to see the census returns, a picture of Todmorden Hall and of course the memorial tablet in Christ Church. Keep up the fantastic work.

Well done ladies for a really interesting site!
Whilst researching my family history I have identified an individual from my Todmorden ancestors who went by the rather glorious name of Gibson Cockcroft (1786-1865). This is such an unusual name (although his grandson also carried it!) that I thought I would google it on the offchance that I might find some other reference to him. Yours was one of the sites found - and I am grateful for information in general and for items including Gibson by name in particular!
According to your information, Gibson was one of the ratepayers of Todmorden who signed various petitions resisting the introduction of aspects of the Poor Law in the area.
Do you have any images of any of the original documents? I have a family history website at www.aspin-tomlinson.co.uk and would like to include relevant material.
