My husband, Frank Marino, is related to the Machado Family. I have been teaching our children the history of San Diego and the family on their fathers side. Juana deserves much more mention in the history books and her work with Father Ubach than what little is mentioned. She is truly one of San Diego's unsung heros.

I would like to thank everyone that has been invovled in gathering information about people that have been buried here at Calvary. I have been looking for years to the whereabouts of a family member that has been lost to my mother for years. With little information I have been hitting road blocks and then one day there was a hit. Not only was I able to find out where he was buried, but with the information you were able to provide I was now able to know what had happened to him. My mother only knew the name of her grandfather and like him his son died at an early age. Edward Alvarado had a son he never knew because he died before his son was born, as life would have it Edwards son also died at an early age and we are unable to find him either. Edward's son was given his name exactly. We never even knew Edward Sr. parents or siblings, only that they were from Hollister, CA. Now we know who his family members are thanks to your diligent work. They are all gone now but my mother at least has some questions answered now. I dont know if this will ever lead to my mother's father's whereabouts, but with renewed hope that you have been able to provide maybe one day he will be found....Thanks, Deborah Bradley

My great grandmother was Jane Laderoot. Most all,if not all, of those listed under the Laderoot name are her family. I remember their names during conversations among family and I have personal diaries between my great grandparents that also speaks of some of these names. My family on my mother's side, came down from Canada and settled in Michigan and then into the San Diego area, specically in the Otay area at that time. They then moved to Hillcrest and the Normal Heights area, where I grew up and attended school. My mother had five brothers and one sister. All her brothers served in the U.S.Military at the same time. I only have one surving uncle and he still lives in the San Diego area. My Great grandmother married Earl Harrison. My grandmother was Anna (Laderoot), who married Moses C. Wilkins. Their children were: Lyle,Forrest,Melvin,Leslie, and Rodney who is stlii living.their daughters were Dorothy and Shirley. Dorothy being my mother, who married Loyd Marcus Dampier. Her sister, Shirley married David Layman. Almost all my cousins on the Wilkins and Layman and Dampier sides of the family are on my facebook page. We talk to each other through that medium and keep in touch with updates and various events happening in our families.
Thank you for the opportunity to share all these facts.

After many years of searching and with the help of your web site we have finally located my husband's Grandfather's burial site. His name was Don Leon Gomez, Mexican Consul to San Diego. He died in 1913. He was 60 years of age. His wife, my husband's grandmother was only 24 when he passed and had three small children including my husband's mother who was only 3 at the time. After his death his wife eventually traveled to northern California and spent the rest of her life there, passing away at the age of 94. We never had much information about Leon Gomez except that he was buried somewhere in San Diego County. We visited the park today and although his grave is not marked now, we were fulfilled to visit the site and see his final resting place. Thank you for efforts in keeping this website in tact.

Very interesting to find this website. In July/August 1969 my sister discovered the old cemetary. A few friends and ourselves began a quest to clean up the cemetary as best we could. The city sent dump trucks for garbage and even honored us with a flower pin - something to do with San Diego's Bicentennial, I believe. The San Diego Evening Tribune and the local paper (can't recall the name of it - Independent, maybe?) sent crews and took our photos and printed our story. We even spoke with the Catholic Church next to the cemetary to try and enlist their help, but they told us they gave it all up to the city. Just too much for a few local girls, but we tried!

Three of Ysidora's children are still at Calvary: John B. Ellis, Charles Ellis, Anna C, Ellis - Ysidora and the rest were moved to our family cemetary at Ellis Ranch in Descanso, CA which has monument status and can never go the way of dear Calvary. So sad this now " group grave" and so displaced the remaining few now without markers. Horrible. Ysidora was a Californio, as were her siblings which include my GGgrandmother, Domitilla Aguilar Kincaid, also buried in our family Cemetary at Ellis Ranch in Descsanso, CA. Her parents and their kin were integral parts of the founding and creation of San Diego: Gabino and Antonia Aguilar - brother to Blase Aguilar of Mission San Juan Capistrano and son of Rosario Aguilar, early title holder of Poway,CA - ealry landowner of Old Town San Diego's "Jolly Boy Saloon" and original immigrant as a Lt. in the Spanish Army and former Major Domo of Mission San Diego in his task. Family history is precious. Preserve yours to pass on now. ~ Thank you for your service to enable me to know mine. Thank you for honoring the dead of my family for me and for my heirs. C. Standley

Her's is the only of her siblings' postings in various 'family trees' that I find repeatedly with an approximate date of birth in 1866 when she was actually born in 1856 per her marriage record and the 1870 Census for Los Angeles, CA. I believe that the sphere in the picture of the Calavry Memorial at Mt. Hope Cemetery actually belongs to my Great-Great Grandfather Thomas Laundy. During the 70's I believe is when vandals on Halloween night, destroyed his momument. My grandfather Clarence Albone went to the office at Mt. Hope inquring about the destruction and was told that the sphere had been taken off and rolled down the road, and couldn't be repaired and the sphere couldn't be place back on Thomas's momument. For years I wondered what happened to it, and on a visit to Mt. Hope in June of this year I saw the monument. If you go to findagrave.com, and search for Thomas Laundy, you will see a picture of his momument from the 1960's. The only reason why I write this is because Thomas masoned his own momument and I just wish his name could have been inclued.

I visited Calvary Cemetery many times with my mother and aunts in the 1950s and have continued to do so now that it is Pioneer Park. Before the conversion we noted where my grandmother was buried, so can still locate the spot whenever we visit.
I remember it as a desolate, gloomy, weedy, dirt only cemetery. It is comforting to see the grass, benches and families picnicking whenever I visit. I enjoy seeing my grandmother's name on the plaque. Thank you for this informational page.

Thank you for your Calvary Cemetery database. I have been looking for a lifetime for information regarding my father's family. My paternal great grandmother was Nellie Hastings who died just two weeks after my father Robert Fontaine was born in San Diego. My grandfather was Nellie's son Elmer Hastings, so your information says. It was a surprise to me that he was a Hastings. Our family name is Fontaine and I guess his step-father Charles Fontaine (husband of Nellie) was not Elmer's real biological father. Surprise. I was thrilled that I had finally come upon information about Nellie and hopeful that I could come to the cemetery and search the records for more information. I am absolutely appalled that she is buried in a cemetery with no headstone or marker. A park? Shame San Diego.

Marna: A wonderful job. I have only a few suggestions. You might want to mention the fire that destroyed the caretakers cottage and all of the cemetery records. This year in The Presidio newspaper I read of the lingering confusion about why th cemetery was removed. I wrote an article (1) Giving Mr. and Mrs. Ward huge credit for their role, and the University students and professors who did so much research when it looked as though everything was going to be lost. In 1958 I had published an extensive story based on my translation of Juanita Machado Wrightington's memoirs. It was published in the Journal of Southern California Quarterly, September 1959. I should add that my huge 1974 volume produced for what used to be our wonderful State Historic Park, titled "Report on the Historical Research --Old Town San Diego, California. The Period 1821-1874. That all of the original plans of the structures, biographical data, that the Professional committee of San Diego's best architects, landscape architects, historians, archaeologists and people of other professions used to lay out the Old Town State Historic Park. There were only two copies of this work, the State had one and I have the other. I hold my observations on the coming fiasco.

I recently moved to the Mission Hills area and stumbled upon this park by accident while out for a walk. Just so happened it was on a Friday during the summer when one of the "Summer Concert Series" was underway.
The next week I went back to enjoy the entertainment and strolled around the park. I was a bit flabbergasted when I saw the memorial and headstones and realized this used to be a cemetery.
I had never heard of a cemetery being turned into a park and continue to have mixed feelings about it. At least they didn't build a mini-mall, and perhaps in some way the enjoyment of the space by people today can be considered a tribute to the folks interned.
I hope no one is offended, but I used my new digital camera to put together a little tribute of my own, viewable at the URL listed.

For years there was a "rumor" in our family that my Grandfather had twin siblings who were born shortly after birth. About 3 years ago, while searching through the CADI, I found that not only were there twin boys, but there was also another boy that had died shortly after birth.
I obtained copies of their death certificates and went in search of them. I had little to go on other than that they had been buried at Catholic Cemetery in San Diego.
The first child was Michael Semper, born Jan.29, 1913, died Jan.30, 1913
The twins were John and Martin, born and died on Jan.6, 1914.
They were children of Juan Lorenzo Martin Semper (b.1868 in Yanci, Navarro, Spain) & Marianna Gachiteguy (b.1883 in Aldudes, Basses-Pyrenees, France)who were also my Great-Grandparents.
I "stumbled" across your headstone transcriptions on the internet about 2 weeks ago. I couldn't believe my luck. I had searched before to find Catholic Cemetery, but couldn't find any record of it.
I have since gone to "visit" my Uncles who are buried there. What a nice park! I would have never guessed that a cemetery had been there if not for the remaining headstones and memorial. It's very unique.
Thank you for finding that last piece of a puzzle that has been a "rumor" in my family for as long as I can remember. Your transcriptions serve a great purpose for those of us who enjoy finding out about our families.

Great site and information. I visited the park several years ago with my father Bill Orsborn. I did not know that the McCarthy head stones were displayed at Mt. Hope. Dad and I are going to head on up that way. Thanks for the great information and access to the pictures. Mark Orsborn

What a wonderful website. My grandmother and I are researching her father's family history. Julian Ames is my grandmother's paternal great-grandfather. Frank Ames is his son. Perfetta Ames was married to Julian. It is amazing that these headstones are available for viewing. Thank you!

In researching the Salgado family, in which several were buried at Calvery Cemetery, it brought back several memories. As a child, we would play hide and seek in this cemetery on Halloween. Makes me feel guilty as I am sure somebody in the group was among those that helped to destroy this cemetery. Amazing how things come back to you in the end. Now I am searching for people who are buried in that cemetery and yet there is no headstone, nor any information. OUCH. But thanks for your help in preserving what little remains. Now that I have grown up, I not only regret what I did as a child, but appreciate your help in the cemetery information preservation.

In the early 1960's my father took my family to the cemetery. He loved history and was upset that the cemetery was not cared for. I recall that he wrote someone (the city?) because he thought the cemetery should be tended. I was a young girl and recall that there was a stone for Elizabeth Taylor. It is nice that the cemetery is cared for now.

Thanks for creating this cemetery site. Since the cemetery no longer exists as a cemetery on the surface (it's now a park) it was extremely difficult for us to locate the cemetery - people in San Diego no longer knew the name or the where abouts of this cemetery. With your web site, perhaps others trying to locate this cemetery will be able to do so! God Bless all of those who are still interred in this cemetery.
