I am trying to get some information on my great great grandfather, Alonzo Hinman. His military records state he was born in Cortland County, NY about 1812. His parents are unknown. I had a volunteer at Cortland County Historical Society looking for me. She found a Roswell Hinman in the area with children approximately the same age as Alonzo in Harford, Cortland, NY. I am not sure if it is a state census because the 1820 census I found for the US Federal census has a Roswell Hinman in Harrison, Cortland, NY with children around the same age as the census she e-mailed to me. I assume they are two different census, but am not sure. Is there any way you can clarify if they are two separate census? I am stuck right now trying to figure out who his parents are. Any suggestions you might have would be appreciated.

I am hoping to find more information on my ancestors, Nicholas and John T Haynes. John was born on July 1 1817. He is my brick wall. I have one lead that his father was named Nicholas. I know he and both of his parents were born in NY but have not found anything that states exactly where. Nicholas was Scotch Irish. They were farmers. John became a carpenter after the Civil war due to being shot in both legs in TN. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thank you

What do you like best about the site? it's a chance to look for information about my ancestors
Comments:
This site is a chance to look for information about my ancestors. My Grandfather Milo Cheney (Chenney, Cheeney) was born in Virgil, Cortland, NY, 26 Jan. 1857. I keep hoping that I can find information about his family members through this genealogy site. His father (on the 1860 census) was Franklin Cheeney b. 1836 and his mother was Hannah Haskell b. 1837. Milo moved to Illinois and married Alma Cook. I have a copy of their marriage license, and it lists Frank Cheney and Hanna Haskell as his parents. I hope that some one will know / find information and contact me about this family. Since I live in Texas, it is impossible for me to travel there to search for records and to look in cemeteries. Milo lived in Nebraska the last years of his life. But he had a brother and a sister who continued to live in Cortland or around that area. His sister was Catharine but I don't know his brother's name. According to the 1860 census, Polly Cheeney was also residing with the family, so my assumption is that Polly was Franklin's mother.
Thanks for having this site,
Martha Peckham Allred

Question for Vicki Titus re: early settlers.

I can't find the 1810 census document you refer to on line.

Question is you list 4 stillman's, John, Mary, Elijah and Susannah. are they listed as 4 separate households or is Mary John's wife (Mary Hubbard) and Susannah Elijah's wife?

Sorry to back door the question, but couldn't get in any other way.

Your time is very much appreciated. Thanks for your work, I think it has helpped me connect my loner Daniel Stillman to his family!

Hi, Mr Stowell (Tim),
I am researching the Clarks who moved from Cortland County, NY, to Dearborn County, IN sometime in the 1830s. I am looking for birth and marriage info for the children of Cyrus (1775 - 1859) and Susannah "Hannah" Richardson Ransom (ca 1775 - 1844). Cyrus and Hannah moved with most of their family members, it appears. Cyrus was the son of Josiah Clark and Jerusha Brut and was born in Wood Stock, Windsor, Vermont.

Samuel Clark (ca 1808 - 18570 is the son of special interest. Whether Samuel was married before Melissa Jones, whom he wed in Indiana in 1845, is of particular interest. I don't see much by way of birth or marriage records for the Scott, Cortland, NT area where they lived.

Are there any professional researchers in Cortland County who might be able to help me for whatever fee is customary? I live in Columbus, OH. Thanks so much, keep up the fine effort, and hope to hear from you. My e-mail is mjc1016@sbcglobal.net if you would prefer to reply outside this guestbook, as my comment is possibly not of very general interest.
Thanks so much for any help you can offer. I will understand if you're overwhelmed, but would still appreciate hearing from you.

Best regards.
Marilyn Clark

Hi Tim, I am helping a friend named Chuck Mericle with his research into his ancestor Lewis Marakle (Many spelling variations to this surname) We are trying to find out who his parents were? When and Where he was born? When and Where he married Hannah Sickler? Some of the facts we have and do not know if they are correct or not: He was born about 1801 in Ulster County (NY), some records say PA, Chuck tells me he was a Mohawk Indian (perhaps by intermarriage of a German Palatine Father-Butler Rangers to Canada and a Mohawk women) He could not read or write. He is supposedly buried in Cayuta Cemetery with his son Lafayette-Gravestone in poor condition but seems to show he died in 1872? at about 69 years of age. When we go to Schuyler County History or Genealogy people they say they do not have a death notice on him (For us to get any of the facts off it) We believe Hannah Sickler (Swarthout, Swartwood Lineage & her surname has as many variations as Lewis does) was born about 1807 in Dutchess County, NY to William Sickler and Ruth Sheppard. William moved his family from NY to PA after Hannah's birth) Chuck believes Lewis and Hannah were married in Exeter, PA. But we can not find any records there to substantiate that. I notice you have a Michael Marakle on your 1820 Cincinnatus Census. Could he be related to Lewis? Any help you can give us would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Jim

found My Bartletts in Glenwood Cem, Homer, here, but not my Fays in same cem... Edward Fay and his wife, Barbara, his son, Neil, Neil's wife, Marjorie, and Neil's son, Stanley... they were burried in Glenwood from 1970s - 2005, in the south part of the cem, so may not yet be in the online listings...

Also found my cousin Jane (Bartlett?) Knapp, wife of Stephen Knapp, listed here... Jane may be a daughter of my 3rd GG Father Charles Bartlett, who lived in Paris, Oneida County, ca. 1820 - 1836... Jane and Stephen are listed in the 1855 census of Paris with Henry Bartlett, her oldest brother, and in same or next house is a Green family who also married Bartletts... Charles Bartlett had 11 children with his wife Mercy (Henry?)... they farmed and did a lot of cloth making from their sheep's wool as seen in the 1825 and 1835 census records of Paris, NY. Mercy was a Quaker and one of Jane's sisters is buried in the Quaker Cem of North Bridgewater, NY. exchange of info would be nice... I have a chart of many of Charles Bartlett descendants in email format for easy sharing...

My grandfather Elbert Salisbury FOSTER was born 1904 in Homer. His parents were Arthur J/Helen Iretta Topping FOSTER, Arthur born 1872 in Homer and Helen about 1872 somewhere in NY. Elbert ("Al") had 3 siblings George R., Earl J. & Margaret P.Foster Wheeler. Elbert lived with his wife, Marie Burgess Foster and 3 children in Owego until from 1930-1943 when they relocated to Fla. I am trying to fill in gaps of information and wonder if any relations remain in the area. I plan to visit the area next summer to learn more. If anyone has even a small bit of info, please contact me. This is important to our family, especially with the recent passing of my mother, Laura Foster Denham.
Thank you.

I have been checking into my history. Almeron Loucks is my great grand father. Ozias is my great great grand father. We do not have his wife's name or date of birth.
My husband and I went to Cortland about 10 years ago and tried to find the farm house on Pendleton Hill rd. The gentleman was selling the house I believe was theirs. He was very nice and I took pictures. I showed him the pictures i had and he said there had been a fire and the Barn was destroyed but he was sure it was the home.
We went to the cemetary but could not find any names no one was there to ask for help. I have the abituary from Almeron and his Mother inlaw Rebecca leech. any info would really be a help. My Granddaughter is working on her family tree . So I got all the info i had for her. Thank you for any answers you may have for us . Bonnie

I was really interested in reading these records even though most of the burials are those of people who have been deceased over 100 years. My biggest interest was seeing that most died of simple diseases that can be treated today. Although I would like if you added more entries (years), I have some family buried in Cortland Rural, but long into the 1900's. Please email me and let me know if you needed any suggestions, thanks! Other than that, you worked pretty hard on this site, very nice.

Job Gilbert - two sons: Elmer Ellsworth and Charles Gilbert.

What happened to Charles?

On the link http://www.rootsweb.com/~nycortla/m157ros.htm (Cortland County Enlistment 157th NYVI) I could not find his name, I think it may-be mispelled because I found the name (Thomas H. KENNELY)

I compiled a family history that I titled "A Beaudry Family in America", concerning descendants of Louis Beaudry 1614/1664 and his wife, Vincente Godet 1617/1664 down nine generations to my parents, G. Fred Beaudry, Jr. 1890/1966 and Ruth Van Brocklin 1890/1940. The Cortland County Historical Society has a copy on file.

Currently, I'm seeking information about schools in Homer and/or Cortland attended by my grandfather, G. Fred Beaudry, Sr. and his wife Harriet Anstance Jones. His obituary states he attended public schools, and I believe what was then called the Normal School. More specifically I would also like to know if Harriet was enrolled at the Normal School. Any suggestions? Thanks for your assistance.

What do you like best about the site? So full of rich history! Never can find all that history in books today!!
What do you like least about the site? Just that I couldn't find a family name.
Comments:
Trying to locate an obit for Sarah Catherine Clark Holman. She was b. 2 Feb. 1862 d. 20 Feb.1882. Looked in Orange C. for years, as names and places spoken in Holman fanily were of that county. BUT,!!!! in the 1880 census, found the family Hallman/Hollman/ in Cortlandt/Cortlandtowne/Cortlandville, a village of Peekskill, Westchester C. I know nothing about this county. Sarah had 2 children listed, then in 1881 had Viola Catherine in Sept. 1881, Sarah died 6 mos. later!!
Is she buried in this county? Don't know the cemeteries back in 1882. The NY VITAL STAT had no record.
So, all I can say now "I need your "HELP"to try and locate an obit or photo of headstone for Sarah. This is the only record that my daughter needs for membership eligibility into the DAR. Any suggestions, help, etc, will be greatly appreciated, almost feel like saying, a reward will be given , and mean it, for a certified record
of death or a photo of headstone.
Thank you for this wonderfull opportunity to give vent to my frustrations with my elusive relative. Thank you very much.

Hello.....
My name is Mark Shevalier....I am a 53 year old high school English teacher from Northern NY !
I am trying to find out antything I can about my father or paternal grandfather or any of my paternal grandfather's
offspring......My parents' divorce and my father's death when I was very young has precluded me from knowing anything about my father's side of the family! I have done a great deal of research but have really come up with nothing !
Just recently I came across a listing for cortland County cemetary/Marathon Cemetary. I discovered that section 7 lot 28 may very well have buried there my great- great- grandfather, my great-grandfather, ,my grandfather and a great uncle..........
this would be: Augusta Shevalier (Died 11/1898 ) (great- great grandfather)

Nathan L Shevalier (Died 2/26/52--age 93) ( my great grandfather)

( Nathan's sons) Leon F Shevalier (Died 1/27/75--age 86) ( my great uncle)
Gordon Shevalier (Died 4/21/1945--age 53) ( my grandfather)

Gordon had a son who is my Father(an only child). He died in 9/1967 at age 55.....He is buried in the Homer Cemetary!
I believe Gordon had another son, Richard G. Shevalier (he most likely is deceased by now) or It could have been Leon's son.........But anyway ,I would like to find any decendants of Richard G. Shevalier as I believe they would be the only paternal blood relatives I have!
I am wondering if there have been any Shevalier additions to Section 7 lot 28 , possibly Richard G........????? Or is there a contact in the Shevalier family that would ,no doubt , have the wealth of information I seek??
PLease reply to me on all of this ....and do what you can to help this encouraging lead be fruitful!
Thank you so much!

Mark Shevalier

They were in the Home for two or three years and adopted by the Freemans of Johnson City.

Found your Potter Hill cemetery listing (Taylor, NY) to be very useful. It is not clear to me what the source of that information is. Specifically, I found that the record for Sophia Kibbe (wife of Joel Kibbe) listed her as the daughter of Reuben Bisbe (my 3rd great grandfather). Is that information actually from cemetery records? If so, it would be a "huge" find for me, and I would like to get access to the original records. Any advice? --William (Rick) Bisbee.

I found handwritten 1830s sherrif's records (Adin Webb) deeds, etc approx 25 pages that I cannot afford to donate to the historical society. If there is a fund available or an individual interested in ownership or philanthropy, please contact me for more information about content and price. (I hope this isn't too commercial for this spot.)

I am interested mostly in Abel Parker (1769 - 1846) of RI and Virgil NY
and Abel Parker 1813(Virgil NY) - Waushara County Wisconsin 1900.
Married to Lucy Moffatt (her father was Joel Moffatt - her maother appears to be Mahala Moffatt buried Hunts Corners Cemetery) then to Hannah Sophronia Rose of Dryden, Tompkins Co., NY and any brothers he may have had.
I am hoping someone who looks at this will know more about the two Abel's and also about Hannah Rose.
