I have been researching my family line of Hendersons, the children of William Henderson and Mary Duncan of Edinburgh….are Gilbert (no birth year d:1902) Mary Ann (b:1856), Archibald (b:1843), Patrick Duncan( (b:1852) William. It is this son, William that I have no information on, though roughly giving him a birth of 1850. This is where I stumbled across your page with William Henderson b: 1850 married Margaret Sutherland Gray in 1875 in Halkirk, but having all their children in Edinburgh. Although they were not recorded as casualties, twins of David Paul & Molly Ginnane died soon after being born prematurely at Mangatainoka, as a result of fright caused to the mother-to-be by the earthquake.

This is a follow-up to my post in 2006 - the story of a photograph! The grandson of Thomas McMurray, living in NZ, made contact with me after years of of us both searching for lost kin! I was able to give him a copy of the photo of his grandfather as a young man, which was found in the attic of his (Thomas')uncle's farmhouse c. 1912 in Wisconsin, USA. The photo had been sent by a sister in Dumfriesshire to her brother who emigrated to Wisconsin in 1904. Thomas McMurray left Kirkcudbrightshire at the age of 15 years, went to Dumfriesshire, and then on to NZ via South Africa (where he no doubt visited my gg grandfather who emigrated to the Cape in 1893), and joined the NZEF. He was wounded in WW1 but survived and married Margaret Bagust. The family still live in NZ.

A very well done and informative website that deserves an genealogy award (or several),not least for its generosity in sharing so much information without a fee! Thomas McMurray from Nether-Linkens Farm, Castle Douglas, Kirkcudbrightshire. Listed as a member of the NZEF 1914-1918. No trace of Thomas after this except for a photograph of him in civilian dress that was sent from Scotland to his uncle in Wisconsin USA during WW1, with the note: "This is Tom. He is in New Zealand". To find him of the NZEF roll was a major breakthrough in my research. Did he survive? Did he stay in NZ? Do I have kin in NewZealand,perchance??

My gg grandfather Rev. Horatio GROUBE came to Taranaki on the :"Timandra" and arrived 23 Feb 1842 where he settled and had a family of 10 children. During the uprisings of the 1860's Horatio's house was burned and the family were assisted in settling in Victoria, Australia.
His nephew George Boulderson GROUBE also went to New Zealand in the 1860's and there are a lot of descendants still living there. Would love to contact any to exchange imformation.

I found you page while looking for Marchburn farm. I was looking for Marchburn because it is where a sister of my GG-Grandmother, (H)ellen Campbell apparently lived. Helen married John McLelland at a place called Wood at Auchleand. It is a farm not far from Causewayend in Wigtonshire. According to a family story she lived there as a child.
Thank you very much for the great work you have done on the Campbell side of the family. The McLelland side is proving to be a problem. All we know is that GG-Grandfather John was born about 1820. To whom and where is a mystery. Anyway, scope for much research.

My great grandfather fits precisely the Ivie you show as son of Andre Campbell of Rankeston and Janet campbell who is shown as coming to Australia in 1848. However his death certificate, recording his death in 2004 shows his parents to be, 'Andrew Campbell and Margaret grace campbell m.n. Rowan, rank or profession unknown.
This does not fit as Margaret Rowan is shown as going to Australia and was a daughter of Janet's sister Tomina.
Is this the outcome of confusion by Ivie's family after his death. It is strange because his son (only son ) named his first son Ivie (who died as a youth0, his other 3 sons Andrew (my father),Neil and William and his two daughters
Chrisina and Grace.
By chance my sister knows some of the descendants of the Rowans in Australia but I am not sure of which ones.
Your photographs of descendants in Cumnock(?) now gives me hope .

You might be interested to know that the exhibition featuring all the work and the story of the foundation of the plastic surgery unit at Sidcup is currently on display in the exhibition 'Faces of Battle' at the National Army Museum London. Included are pieces made in collaboration with families of the men treated by Gillies. Its my intention to next make work in response to the facially injured New Zealanders and Australians with a view to touring the exhibition to the southern hemisphere.

Thank you so much for putting this information on the web. I have been searching for ages for information about James Cridland (my great great grandfather) without result. I guess I didn't put the right words in the search engine till today! All I know about him is that he was captain of his own ship and made a fortune in New Zealand and had rings made for his sisters with gold he dug himself. From his memorial card I know he drowned off Greymouth, NZ on 30 July 1867. His seaman's chest was returned to the family and my brother still has it. He was from Bridgwater in Somerset. If you are able to guide me in the right direction to find more documentary evidence about his drowning or his gold digging or the name of his ship I would be delighted and really grateful

Although not having any connection to Te Puke, found my ancestors accidently listed under Maketu. They are the ones from Te Maketu. I have extensive info on John Cummins( listed as Cumming) and am looking for info on Theophilus and Edward (his son) Pratt. They arrived on the "ganges" in 1865 and settled in Te Maketu/Ramarama. Catherine Pratt was John's sister.

New Zealand has become interested recently in the tragedy at Passchendaele, as to have I. In looking up the name of a Gt Uncle of mine who was killed 6th October 1917( Sgt Donald McLean 12/2060, ) I find his name missing from the battle records. He is also missing from Glynn Harpers book's Roll of Honour. According to a letter received soon after, he was killed while retiring from the positions attained 3rd Oct, and was in the company of a Cpt C. E.Parry 12/2904 who was also killed. Parry however is mentioned but my uncle not. How would you suggest I go about righting this omission? Ex South Taranaki - Currently researching Chinese in Taranaki 1880s to 1960s. The Hawera Star has its old newspapers on line from 1880 - 1910. Other papers available as well. The Hawera & Normanby Star was founded in 1880 by Patrick Galvin, Joseph Innes and J.C. Yorke. Followed links to the rorrison search from 1860's. The Rorrisons seem to be my family who were in the Cumnock area until the late 1800's. Most Rorrisons were spelt Rorison, the double r entering and lapsing in alternate census records until fixed about 1880's. Hi there, my mother and her family were living in Inangahua Junction when the earth quake hit. I never met my Grandmother Meryl Matui, she died when my mother was a young girl. I had only ever seen pictures of her until my Aunty Alice Gilsenan found old TV footage filmed I think the day after the earthquake, and there is my grand mother with my mum Hinemoa and her brother Russell being interviewed. Interested in your findings on the Templetons of new Cumnock, Scotland. I'm researching the family for my cousin - it would seem that she is descended from John Templeton, son of David Templeton and Sybilla Tympanie. On his wife's death certificate it states he was illigitimate and i can find no record of a marriage between David and Sybilla ( she sometimes appears as Isabella Timpany). My Dad was sent to Norfolk Island for 8 months during WWII. He was there from 7 Apr 1943 till 8 Dec 1943. He was in Wanganui 11 Dec 1943, so whether this camp was somehow linked to Hawera, I would not know.
Christine, I was fascinated to see my Dad's name amongst those listed. I am not familiar with any of the other names. I was interested to see that his blood group was shown as 'O'. I had no proof but thought it was 'B'.
I am amazed at all I have seen while surfing this website.

Hi, I came across your site while looking for some information about my relatives. I noticed that you have listed as a victim of the Napier earthquake one James Durning. If this is indeed, as I believe it to be, my Great Uncle then he wasn't killed, the story is odd. He was buried for three days and rescued only to find his name listed in the obituary of a local paper. He died a few years back aged over 80.

No trace of Thomas after this except for a photograph of him in civilian dress that was sent from Scotland to his uncle in Wisconsin USA during WW1, with the note: "This is Tom. My mother Rewa Macdonell was born on January 4th, 1925 in Taumaranui and lived with her grandmother in Taihape and lateron in Wellington. My grandfather Leslie Gordon Macdonell left home when my mother was a young girl. My mother met my father during WW-II and they got married in 1947.
My mother passed away in 2002 and never saw or heard from him again. I would like to have more information on both my grandfather Leslie Gordon Macdonell and my grandmother Rose Siddle who is buried in Taihape.

I am researching the Andrew Davidson family. He was married in Canada September 15, 1852 to Elizabeth Faircloth and I've been able to trace them this far (see below). After they landed I have no idea where they settled the only clue I have may be information on a Promissory note (borrowed small amount of money which had to be paid back to the provincial govt - records of that should be at the National Archives in Christchurch)

An ancestor James Crallan b. 1831 Appleby, Westmoreland emigrated to New Zealand with his wife Elizabeth nee Richardson.
James died in 1914 in Dannevirke, Hawkes Bay, New Zealand.
