I have delayed searching out my Irish DWYER ancestry for decades given the seeming past 'chaos' of 19th Century Irish FH record-keeping. (I figured they would wait for me!)
Now that I have developed better skills - though doing the English FH work of later ancestors - I am willing to begin the Irish FH work.
Your site is much appreciated. I see that others have walked these research paths before me, and I am heartened.
I shall post detailed queries in the approprite Rootsweb locations and other British Isles sites.
What I have presently is that John Dwyer, born about 1828 reported "Tipperary, Ire" as his birthplace in 1871 U.K. census. This of course is not a query.

Would like to ask about sponsors at Keogh family events. We have reached the conclusion that the family of John Keogh and Ann Quinn are long lost family, possibly descendants of Owen Keogh and Mary Galligan of St. James Parish, Colgan ON. John appears to be the same child baptised in St. Mary's Ernestown in 1824, just before the family moved to Adjala Twp in Simcoe Co. We would need the names of the sponsors, including any information about their residence, to firm up these suspicions. Great job! I'm doing a similar task for St. James, Colgan. Not online yet.

She married Martin J Burke, also of Ireland (born abt. 1873) I don't know if they were married before or after they came to New York, but they settled in Troy and raised five children. Agnes, born 1-6-1911 was my mother-in-law. I know she told my husband there were still relatives "over there" and I believe they even visited once in the 80's but I am unable to track them down. They were Protestant---Church of Ireland.
James Wall (born in the 1780's) his wife Ellen Wall (born 1891) . We feel Ellen's maiden name was also Wall. Married around 1810?
Children, Mary born 1813 and Ann born ? Also maybe a son?? William or James??
Moses Wall a brother to James Wall (we think). Moses born 1796, Roscrea (as stated on his gravestone).
They all emigrated in 1819 to Canada.

This census only gives Ireland as the birth place for all family members but on 1881 census William and Grace give Tipperary as their place of birth. The surname shows as Rofs but since my ancestors come from McKillop Township and David Ross' birthdate is July 28, 1859 I believe these are one in the same. The surname should be Ross. This probably also means that David's siblings are John, Alexander and Robert.
Hope this helps!

I'm not 100% certain he came from Tipperary. He was born in Ireland in 1813. The first recorded record of him in America show him being married to a woman from Cork here in Portland Maine in 1846.
Markley was not a common name in Ireland and according to Griffith's valuation there were 11 Markley househould around 1850, 10 of which were in Tipperary. I am having a hard time fiding documents here which verify where in Ireland he came from. I have found two Thomas Markley's in Tipperary around that time. One in Fethard and the other in Thurles. He was my Great Great Grandfather. Also, he was Roman Catholic . It appears the Markley name is now totally extinct in Ireland.
I'm not sure without info on this side if we can really nail down wher he came from over there. But any info you may have might lead to an answer. Thank you

Great site. I found two baptisms of children of my gr-grandfather Dennis O'Meara. He is listed as O'Mara and O'Maro in the file. I can be sure it is him because the names and dates of birth for the children correspond directly with the entries in the family bible. I am still looking for information concerning my grandfather Michael who was older than the two children in this file. I suspect that the family moved here from some other part of Canada.

David McKay was born in Nova Scotia with Scots ancestry around 1800. He was married to Margaret Sutherland (b 1806). They came to Ontario with many children including
William
David
Hugh
Joel ( he has been transcribed as Jod in 1851)
Margaret
Mary
Isabelle
Eleanor or Helen
Elizabeth
Alexander was the only one born in Ontario around 1850
They were all born before 1850, but I don't have the exact birthdates since they seemed to change with each census, usually by more than a year or two. Mary was my husband's Ggrandmother and she never told the truth about her age, but was probably born around 1849,according to her obituary) although she is shown in 1851 as 8 years old...a real puzzle.
A great site. keep up the good work

The next descendants found, Ellon, Margaret and John were born 1830's. But seems too far apart for these to be children of John and Ellon. I would accept any direction or help that you can offer. My maternal grandmother, Honora Cooney emigrated from what she called "Shronell Hills" Tipperary. She was the child of Jeremiah Cooney and Honora Hogan, who were married in 1870. My grandmother, Honora, was born in 1873.She said that her family names in order were "Dee, Hogan, Cooney." I have not been able to find a Dee woman marrying a Hogan man. Might it have been Devereaux or some other name beginning with Dee? The family resided on what is now the property of Michael Hourigan. My grandmother talked about watching the British troops drilling near her home. What Gaelic word would represent "hill" in Shronell Hills? Thanks you in advance for any information that you can share.

There is a John and Mary with a daughter Margaret listed

coincide with my ancestors who moved to the USA.

Can you please help? I am DESPERATE to find out if the Mary DINAN (spelled various ways) who married Michael MURPHY and was the mother of Catherine (1855),Michael Hugh (1857), Mary Anne (1858),Peter(1861),Patrick Joseph (1863), Mary Teresa (1867),Francis (1868), Elizabeth (1860), Patrick (1863),and Ellen (1879) was the daughter of Maurice DINAN (or DINEN)and Catherine HARTNEADY (sometimes KERNADY) from County Clare.
Mary was their first child born in Ontario after emigrating in 1847 to Peel County, Ontario. Born in Ireland were Michael (1839), Catherine (1844) and John (1846). Two other daughters Bridget and Mary (born about 1840 & 1842 in Ireland) died before the 1851 census.Several other children were born in Ontario, The next after Mary being Margaret who married a James GRAHAM. The other siblings died young, and most were buried at Elmbank Cemetery which became surrounded by Pearson's Toronto Airport, and have been reinterred at Assumption Cemetery in Mississauga. The re-dedication is scheduelled for July 10, 2004, so you can see why am in a hurry to try to find traces of our Mary. Are there any descendants of Michael and Mary MURPHY still in the area? If so, how could I contact them? Would the church records given any information about Mary DINAN's parents? Was the Mrs. Mary MURPHY whose death & burial was at St. James in 1907 be Mary DINAN? Please, I would be forever grateful for any help you could give. Thank you for posting these records on the internet. This is the ONLY glimmer of hope I have found. I am very hopeful that this Mary DINAN is a sister to my great-grandmother, Catherine DINAN who married Thomas BARKER. Thank you, Mary Barker Wilkinson

Dennis Ford & Bridgit Kings Family:
One of Dennis's son named Dennis died from Pneumonia contracted in 1880 from herding their cattle from Canada to their Homesteads in Dakota. He is buried at the village of Kingsbridge in Ashfield Township, Huron Co., Ontario, Canada. Another son named Patrick was killed on his Homestead in Section 12 form a run away horse team accident involving a hay Rake in 1887.
The first mass in St. Leo's Catholic Parish of Casselton was held in the summer of 1879 in the farm home of Dennis Ford on the SE 1/4 of Section 12. A missionary priest, Father Spitzenberger, made the trip from Moorhead, Minnesota on Horseback to offer the Mass. Services were held once a month in the Ford home until 1880. St. Leo's Catholic Parish was organized in the Ford home in 1880.
Dennis Ford was an active in Public affairs and served as Gill Twp assessor. Mr. Ford died on November 16, 1887 and is buried at St. Leo's Catholic Cemetery in Cassleton.
All of the Ford Farm homes, those of WIlliam and Catherine Ford Cosgrove and John Ford in Section 12, Michael Ford in Section 1, all in Gill Twp. and Morgan J. Ford in Section 36 of Wheatland Twp. were built by a nephew of Dennis Ford from Superior, WI named Thomas Ford; a carpenter during the late 1880's and early 1890's.
I think there is a strong possiblilty that Catherine Ford was one of the first, if not the first, unmarried woman to apply for and receive a Patent Homestead in her own name in the Present State of North Dakota. Date of the Homestead application on Section 12, Gill Twp. Cass County, Dakota Terriotory was March 17, 1878. Date of patent was September 15, 1884.
Her Homestead was in the immediate vincinty of the original Cass-Cheny "Bonanza" Farms managed by Oliver Dalrymple. The Dalrymple farms were started in 1876 with 1,280 acres of Wheat planted which was the first "Bonanza" farm in Dakota Terriotory. In the spring of 1878 Catherine Ford, a Neighbor, commenced her farming operations.

Great website. You are to be commended for all your research, work and effort, and then making it available for all to use. The way the census and church records sure are put together sure make research for others so easy to use.
My great-grandfather, Robert Brown, married Margaret Shanahan on July 24, 1859 in the St. Columban Church. Her sister Mary Shanahan married John Devereaux on September 20, 1852; her sister, Bridget married Charles O’Neil on Nov. 16, 1852; her sister Catherine married Robert Devereaux on Feb. 2, 1869; and her sister married James Devereaux on July 4, 1870, with all weddings being in the St. Columban Church.
Would like to contact descendants of Devereaux and O’Neil families to exchange info on history.
Another great-grandfather was John Maloney who married Mary Finn May 3, 1858 in St. Columban Church. Mary Finn had a sister Margaret who married John Prendergast, and a sister Johanna who married John Brennan. Would also like to contact descendants of the Finn/ Prendergast/ and Brennan families.
Look forward to the update on the site as time goes on. Keep up the good work.

Tracing my husband's tree. His gg Grandfather, HENRY CARDER, was from England, but married an Irish lady born in Ontario Canada. Her name was SARAH ANN, but we do not have her surname. They lived in Essex County, Ontario and had six sons. SARAH ANN's parents were from Ireland. There is some suspicion that the name MC PHEE may be in there somewhere, although this sounds more Scottish than Irish. Any help appreciated

I have found many records of my ancestors in Huron County, and I know that my gggrandfather James Love married Eliza Airth in 1855 in Huron County. Thomas and Mary, his parents, are not to be found anywhere I have looked so far. Newspaper accounts of James and Eliza's Diamond wedding anniversary mention James being born in 1832 but no mention of where he was born and Eliza's birthplace is documented as Aberdeen Scotland,1837. Eliza is said to have come to Canada as a small child where she met and married James.
Any resources that could be checked would be appreciated.

Francis McGrath, was my great grandfather, and the family resided for a period in Cahir, County Tipperary, which may have been from 1869-1884 or even longer.
Francis McGrath may have been christened Francis John McGrath. He was in the Royal Irish Constabulary in Cahir and later transferred to Mountrath, County Laois and appears to have been stationed in Mountrath during the 1880s.
Francis McGrath married Mary O’Halloran. Their son, John McGrath, born in Cahir in 1870, entered the Patrician Brothers’ Order at Mountrath in 1885. In 1888, he was sent to Sydney, Australia, where he taught in their schools until his death in 1945. He is buried at the Field of Mars Cemetery in Sydney.
They had four daughters; two daughters entered the Convent and became teaching nuns. One may have been a Sister Brigid and may have gone to Hampshire, UK. The other may have been a Rev. Mother ? and may have gone to Toulouse, South France.
A third daughter may have married and became a Mrs McAuliffe who may have lived in County Wicklow. She may have had sons who were in the New York Police Force as well as other children who may have become teachers in Ireland.
Their 4th daughter, Ellen Mary McGrath, born in Cahir approx. 1878, was my grandmother, who emigrated to New Zealand and married Cornelius Walsh in 1902 in Wellington, New Zealand. Ellen may have taught French, i.e. may have been a French governess.

I'm looking for Mary Mulcahy b.c.1834 in Clonmel, Tipperary - only details I have are from her marr. & death certs in NSW, Australia. From these I have surmised that Mary was the daughter of soldier who probably emigrated to NSW in late 1840s and served in Newcastle area. Certs give surname variously as Mulcahy / Mulcahia and McKoy / McCoy. Any help anyone can give appreciated.

This was my great grandfather. He was married to a Bridget Loftus. I found a branch of the Ryan family that I think may be his on your tree. His father may have been Thomas Ryan and mother Catherine Mulligan. I know he had a brother James Ryan but that is all I know. They resided in Clonmel, during their married life and had several children as follows Josephine, Thomas Francis, Bridget, James, Richard, Mary Ellen(my grandmother), Catherine, William, another Catherine. These children were all baptized at Ss Peters and Paul in Clonmel from the late 1880's through 1890's. I can find no record of my great grandmother birth etc in Tipperary but some residents of the town say she may have been from Mayo. The last residence I have on them was 43 Cashel Road, Clonmel. They also lived on Bolten Street when the children were young. He worked at the asylum in Clonmel.

I wasn't sure whether the surname Dorsey from Ireland was derived from Anglo-Norman D'Arcy, D'Orsay or from Irish O'Dorchaid from the Gaelic word meaning dark or gloomy. Based upon the spelling for Matthew of Tipperary it would appear to be of Gaelic Irish origin, probably from a sept originating either in Galway or Mayo.
