First of all, I am from neighboring Grant County and I came to this particular website because I "chose" to!
I am looking for the "earliest" photographs of the town -Owenton- for the purpose of Metal Detecting. Some of the oldest streets, buildings, landmarks, etc...especially of those "still" in existance today. I have permission to "hunt" -{...when I say "hunt," I mean Metal Detect!}- on a few properties fairly close to town, but I would love to have the permission to "hunt" at various other OLDER places/spots within the city & its limits. Just about ALL of the Older places I desire to "hunt" within, are under the jurisdiction of the Historical Society...(ie: I live in Grant County and am one of only three people who actually has permission to "hunt" at the Sherman Tavern in Sherman, KY...my wife Debbie, myself, and my buddy, Justin Baker).
Any "older" pics of the town would be awesome too. Ones showing the original layout, etc...(maybe even some of early life within the town...like people & cars, etc...from the 20's, 30's, and up...)...
I will continue to poke around and keep on "clicking," maybe I will stumble onto some pics!!!

This site shows that the Maple Grove Colored Baptist Church cemetery May be owned by the Light House Baptist Church.This not true.My great great grand father(William Moses Ware) and four other trustees of the Maple Grove Colored Baptist church purchased this land from Thomas Waller Garnett in 1875.
Once the lot was paid off,a deed was recorded(book "b" page #14) in the names of the trustees on november 11,1881.A church building was erected in 1876 and was torn down in 1948,but the cemetery remains and is currently being used as such.

I am researching the Wood family in Owen County. I believe Jesse and Pleasant are sons of George Wood and that George was the son of George Wood, Sr. Pleasant Wood married Mary Polly Martin. They had a son Joseph Headley Wood and he married Mary Elizabeth O'Bannion. Then they had a son which was my grandfather Oatley Wood born June 13, 1886 in Owen , Ky. Our cuurent search interest in Owen and surrounding counties is on behalf of a very close friend from Louisville, whose maiden name is Arnold. Calvin Kenneth2(b. 1911)back to Samuel8(b.c1750)of Surry County, VA.
The line then goes thru Wrights to a Francis Wright (b. 1658), who married Anne Washington, daughter of John Washington and sister of George, our 1st President.

I am having a hard time verifying my Great Grandmother's maiden name and who her parents were. My mother had written down her maiden name as Jennie Gibson. She appears as Jennie/Jinnie on all the census forms I have seen, but the only thing certain is,she married John Jackson about 1895-97. John was born abt. 1877 in Carroll Co. I believe Jennie was born in Owen Co. Between the four Counties in that region;Carroll, Gallatin, Grant and Owen, Carroll is the only one that has the most info for researchers.
