I was searching for a gentleman from Strabane, Co Tyrone, when I came across this site. My ancestors came from Co Sligo and records in Ancestry show one of the boys may have had land in Co Tyrone in the 1840s.

What a wonderful site you have! I discovered it in my search for an ancestor, Samuel Martin, who was born in Tyrone in 1732 [his father was Hugh Martin] according to his Revolutionary War pension records. He came to America and lived in Tyrone County, North Carolina, United States and died at the age of 104.

I have started to research my great grandfather, Arthur Patrick Breen born 1881 County Tyrone, married 1906. He served as a private with the firdt Irish Regiment, his number was 6419. I have medals belonging to him from South Africa and the First World War. His medals including two from South Africa, one under Victoria and one from Edward VII, The Victoria medal states Belfast, Wittebergen Cape Colony 1899-1902. My mother believes he lied about his age in order to be enlisted. I would be interested to receive any information you might have please. He was held in a prisoner of war camp in Germany, during the first world war, where he managed a football team and played against the German guards.

Arthur Connolly (b. 1811 in Ireland) married Sarah McLoughlin/McLaughlin (b. 1811 in Ireland) about 1834.

They had the following children:

-James born about 1838. He married Margaret Dunbar (b. 1838 Eramosa Township Wellington County Ontario Canadda) on 9 Feb 1859 in Wellington Ontario Canada.
Their children include Sarah C. Connolly (1859) and Eliza A. Connolly (1860) both born in Canada.

-John Connolly born 21 Jun 1842 in Co. Tyrone. He married Mary Jane Martin (b. 4 Dec 1852 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada) on 7 Jan 1878 in Wellington County, Ontario Canada.
Their children include: Arthur C. Connolly (1880), Annie Connolly (1882), Mary Connolly (1884), Margaret Connolly (1885), Sarah Connolly (1887), James Joseph Connolly (1892) and Edward Thomas Connolly (1895) all born in Ontario Canada.

-Margaret Anne Connolly born 20 May 1845. She married Mark Tutton (born 1841 in England) on 14 Apr 1873 in Wellington County, Ontario Canada. Their children include Thomas Tutton (1874), Arthur Tutton (1875), Sarah Jane Tutton (1878), James Tutton (1879) and Margaret Tutton (1885).

-Sarah J. Connolly born 10 Aug 1845, Ballynatubbrit, Killyclogher, County Tyrone. She married John Brown (b. Jun 1846 in Denmark) on 29 Oct 1872 in Boston, Mass, USA.
Their children include: Mary Ellen Brown (1872) Peter Brown (1873), Ann Elizabeth Brown (1875), Sarah Jane Brown (1876), Catherine Brown (1878), Matilda Brown (1880), Margaret M. Brown (1881), John Brown (1881), Gertrude Brown (1882), George Brown (1884), Walter and Willie Brown (twins born 1885) and Lauretta Frances Brown (1888). All were born in Boston except Margaret who was born in Wellington County, Ontario Canada.

-Arthur Connolly born 1 Mar 1850 in Ballynatubbrit, Killyclogher, county Tyrone. He married Julia Ann Mulloy (born abt 1841 in Wellington County Ontario Canada) on 21 Jan 1874 in Wellington County, Ontario Canada.
I do not have data on any children for them.

-Mary Connolly was born 1859. I'm not sure if she is a daughter. She was on the 1871 census with Arthur and Sarah in Canada. This census does not list the relationships of the people. I note that if Sarah was really born in 1811, she would have been 49 when Mary was born.

I have been researching the family trees and as my mother wasn't married to my father the Family name is from my mother's father Robert McSorley. I have a copy of a family tree done by another member of the McSorley's in my area and I have the name JAMES McSORLEY. He is down in the Flax List for 1796 as farming land in Ardstraw, Co Tyrone. I have been trying to find out anything I could about James, but cannot locate anything other than his wife, Margaret. She may not have been his first wife because he had a son Hugh born in 1794, so I am assuming that Hugh was born in Ireland and came to Wigan with his father and his new family.James and Margaret went on to have other children and although I have a record of Margaret's death, there is no record of James's. Or of their marriage. But then again, most of the Index's at the moment do not go back further than 1837. If you can tell me ANYTHING, I would be grateful. I have located a Cornelius McSorby (McSorley) on the Flax List on your site. Thanking you in advance. Kathleen Devine (nee McSorley)

Excellent site, very helpful so far, many thanks, I have found my Great Grandmother's birth, and details of other relatives from there.
Are there any plans to include later records? I am looking for my Grandfather, but he was born 1896/1897 and I think he would have been baptised in this church. I know that his mother married his step-father in this church in 1905, b ut I cannot find any record of his birth anywhere. As I live in England it is difficult to access the Irish records.

Again, many thanks . Louise

Samuel died on 27 September 1894, and left his estate to his son, Samuel Jnr, who lived at Tullydoortans.

Other sons were William, and James (my gGrandfather) who lived in Fearn, Co. Donegal, with his wife Matilda, nee McCarter.

Samuel Snr had a brother Robert, listed as a land-owner in 1857, and other brothers(?) who emigrated to the USA around that time.

Thanks for the "site", it is very nice. I am looking at my father's grandparents - Carnwath - on your site of the ocean for the first time. My family is Matthews, from New Brunswick, and I have been unable to make a connection to your side, or my side, of the "pond". Have a good weekend

Researching the Averell family history - found an interesting lead on your website for a Thomas Averell, who bought land in the Mountjoy Precinct in 1620. Family lore suggests they were Huguenots, who first fled to England and then to Ireland - so 1620 would probably fit in well with that theory. Thank you.

I am trying to find the Northern ireland (Tyrone) part of my family. My grandfather was known in England and Stewart Donockley thought Donockley is not a name that exisats before him. I know he came from Tyreone and that his Father was also called Stewart and was a Carpenter. It seems hard to get emmigration ship records from N. Ireland to England. He was in England the latter part of the 1800's because his marriage certificate shows he was married in St Michael's Church, Workington, Cumberland in 1888 to Elizabeth Braithwaite. on the the certifiate his Father is down also as Stewart Donockley, Carpenter, deceased. There seems to have been a lot of Donaghey;s in Tyrone in the 1800's and this seems the nearest to our current name. I would love to get a breakthrough. I know that Stewart - married 1990 had at least one brother in the RAC but never knew a name for him and neve knew my grandparents. Stewart was Orange Protestant. I would love to spend some time in the Belfast records Office but need to be sure I am on the right family first. Can you help/advise me please. Thanks Anne Donockley.
If someone were to doan initial search for mewhat cost would I expect to incur? Thanks you. Anne Donockley

Someone suggested I try Tyrone to find ancestors-no idea why. Looking for great gr father and wife( -thought they came from Co. Meath but cannot find.) James A. and Maria/Marie/ Mary Reburn. Sailed to USA mid 1840's to NY stayed 2 years-- had a son George--then moved to Fond du Lac, Wisconsin. Believe he farmed thereand had 4-5 more children. Cannot find birth ,marriage, or deaths of any of them in USA. Know nothing about Ireland. We think James had some education. Have no written notes to go on. One of James' sons, Thomas A. Casey, m. Hermina Herrgesell in Ludington Michigan. They are my husband's grandparents. They had left Michigan and moved to Sultan Washington. Had 8 kids all told. Were not Catholic in Sultan.
Anyone out there know of these people?

Teena, I found you have relatives with the name of Love in Tyrone. I am trying to make connections to my husband's family who were from there. A brother and sister, Maxwell and Elizabeth Love through Consulate Londonderry gave power of attorney to Elizabeth Love of Lawrenceburg, Lawrence, Tennessee Dec 18, 1854 Elizabeth of Lawrenceburg was a niece and there was other relative in the area: George and Matthew, who was naturalized in Pennsylvania in 1823. Matthew had property in Lawrenceburg and Elizabeth inherited a portion in 1852. Eliza Love Smith (dau. of Elizabeth) wrote a letter to a James Sproule in Ireland and called him brother, in 1900. The letter was returned as undeliverable and mentions Strabane post office. I have a picture of Eliza. Do you think there is any connection? Thank you for the website.

Merry Christmas to all and a very happy 2009.

I am hoping to find some connection in Ireland to my grandfather Samuel Moreland. He was born in Belfast, Ireland 1855 or 1856 and came out to New Zealand when he was 19.
His Father was Robert Moreland (a farmer)and his mother was Jane Ann Moreland (nee Campbell), there are search records which show them as married in 1839 in the presbyterian church in Dromara, Down, Ireland.

They lived around 1875 at 101 Wood Birch Road, but have not been able to locate this address, the road may have long gone or the spelling could be incorrect.

Samuel may have had a brother called Hugh and a sister called Annie, possibly a grandmother called Martha.

I have searched and searched but so far have not been able to match them on the internet, but hoping that someone out there will have some record of them or that they are possibly related to this family of Morelands.

Would appreciate any help in my search.

Kind regards
Ann Humffreys (nee Moreland)

Researching Irish family - Charles Donaghy -County Tyrone born Dec 1856, Roman Catholic I believe and immigrated to England, then to Nova Scotia, Canada then to Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Returned to Ireland roughly 1924 with his grandson Gerald Donaghy who went by the name of Kevin. Gerald (Kevin) returned to Canada and no one living knows when Charles died or where he is buried. I have been told that he operated a small chicken farm when he returned Ireland. Wife was Helen Sarah Hyatt born 1869 of Ireland or England. Anyone who's out there searching gravestones please take a look arounf for me; especially in County Tyrone as we expect that is where he went back to.

Greetings

I came across this web site whilst searching for my Caulfeild family, some of whom hailed from Co Tyrone. I appreciate sites like this which can be of great assistance.

Just one comment if I may?

I notice that on most occasions the spelling of the name of the rector for the events at Saint Luran's Parish Church, Derryloran is J Caulfield. I feel these are probably transscription errors. On other entries it is correctly spelled Caulfeild. (See burial entry 1816, Mar 4 Rev. John Caulfeild with the correct spelling. His wife was Euphemia Gordon).

Perhaps someone could check this and alter if found to be incorrect.

Regards
Pam Veenstra

Martha ROBINSON
Tent Church cemetery, s of Uniontown, PA, USA
Born Tyrone, buried: USA, Pennsylvania
James was born Nov 26, 1770 likely in Co Tyrone, Ireland. (A descendant recalls being told that the Robinsons were from Rouskyro in Ireland and that they owned a block there.) He died Jan 5, 1845 near Uniontown, PA, USA.
James brother Thomas remained in Rouskyro, Donaghenry parish, Co Tyrone, Ireland where he wrote letters (I have ones dated 1816, 1832, 1841, and an undated partial ltr) to James.
Thomas had 3 known children: Nancy married Alexander "Richard" Ferguson of Rouskyro (where they continued to live); James Robinson in 1831 lived in Belfast, but by 1841 had moved to Scotland where he worked in a canvas factory and had 8 children; and John Robinson who had married (1829) "Phoebe" McReynolds, a daughter of Robert McReynolds. Phoebe left John and moved to America. John and his daughter Galey? Saley? Sally? Robinson remained in Rouskyro, lived (1832) with his parents Thomas and Mary Robinson.
Martha (McMullen) Robinson, wife of James, was born 1783 or 4 died in US 1854, age 70. She was of Scottish descent, of a well-educated family and had a brother who was a graduate of Glasgow Univ, Scotland.

I will be visiting Tyrone County in May 2008. I was in Ireland once before (1986) with my father Regis Canevin Rogers and brother Joseph. We were trying to trace our family roots. We know that our Great-Great-Grandfather (Patrick Rogers) came to the United States in the mid to late 1800's through Baltimore Maryland. He settled in Pittsburgh and died in 1863 (age 47). Looking forward to our visit.

The BARTLEY family emigrated from Ireland to England sometime before 1840; it has been strongly suggested that they came from Ulster. Traditionally RC, I find them in Leeds, Yorkshire, England occupation: Plumbers, glaziers etc. I wonder if Tyrone is a good place to start my search? I have been to Ireland 4 times, but never out of the Irish Free State. Your site is lovely, thank you.

Very interesting site. I was not as usual able to find anything on my family. My gr-gr-gr- granfather James Arnold was born in Laslap/Gortin County Tyrone, Ireland in 1777, married Mary McCormick b. 1781, had 2 sons William b. 1821 and James b.1827 - both born in County Tyrone.William married sarah Stowell b. 1823 probably same area. They had 8 children and came to Quebec, Canada prior to 1854 ( one son died in Quebec that yr.) My gr grandfather James William was born in Quebec, Canada 1863. The names William and James seems to be a main family name, as this tradition still continues today. If anyone can help with some info to help with my research, this would be much appreciated. Keep up the good work. Thank You.

My grandmother's maiden name was spelled Mullan. Her first name was Mary, but apparently she was known as Minnie. My Grandfather name was Henry Connolly (we have found it spelled Connally). The date of marriage appears to have been November 28th, 1896. My Great-grandparents were Patrick Connolly (also in some documents Connally or Connelly) and Sarah McAlister. Their date of marriage appears to have been October 22nd 1870. Both marriages took place in Cookstown, County Tyrone

My dad's sister was Sally Connolly. I was told by my cousin that she is buried in Cookstown (Roman Catholic Chapel). She never married. I am sure she was Baptized in Cookstown. On her tombstone it is spelled Connelly with an e.

Hi there,
You may be interested to know that the Rev. John Stuart was the son of Andrew Stuart who, emigrated to America in approx. 1720-30. Andrew Stuart, according to genealogical research and family lore, is one of the Castle Stewart siblings who left County Tyrone during a time of great instability in Ireland and an obvious backlash against the feudal lords. (In other words, those who fled Ireland were of various social classes.)I'm descended from these gentlemen.

Just dropped by to say hello
I'm researching my ancestry that goes back to Tryone County on both sides of my family. Thompson and Dinsmore
James Edward Thompson and his wife came to Canada Ontario Dufferin county in the early part of 1800's
Some would settle in Mono township and raise Championship Clydesdales from the later part of the 1800's into the mid 1900's
should you have info I would love to hear from you.
Thanks
Mark Thompson

ps
Looking at the landscape in Tryone is a lot like looking at Dufferin County. They must have felt right at home with the hills and stones

His obit states ".....both sides of the family were prominently involved in the failed 1798 REVOLUTION under EMMET."

Immigrated to USA in 1849--51. Farmed in MONGAUP VALLEY, BETHEL, NY. They had a large family, one of who was my GGGrandfather, THOMAS DILLON b. 1852 . He too was a prosperous farmer in MONTICELLO, SULLIVAN CO., NY and died in 1912.
His brother, JOHN J DILLON, was both the publisher and owner of an important nationally distributed newspaper out ot NYC, "THE RURAL NEW YORKER", FROM THE EARLY 1900'S TILL HIS DEATH APROX 1950.

My grandfather was named THOMAS for his father and operated the farm after the death of his father till the early 1960's at which time he became ill with cancer , stopped farming and was forced financially to sell portions of the land.

Many family members have built homes on parts of THOMAS DILLON'S FARM and where they currently reside.

I am looking for any and all leads that may pertain to my DILLON Family. I will answer everyone who communicates with me.

I have a wonderful family website, www.gerisgenes.com , which was created by my beautiful, gifted and talanted daughter Geri.
