We Boy Scouts were camped out at Moffit's mine when the stillness of the night gave way to horns blaring and men singing and shouting at the top of their lungs, it was crazy! The miners getting off shift and headed home by bus and by car just heard the word of victory over the Japanese.

Memory of an event or time in the County? 3rd great grandmother born 1805
Comments:
My 3rd great grandmother Ann Hart (daughter of Mitchel Hart and Margaret Parkinson) was born 14 Oct 1805. Margaret Parkinson was born 20 April 1776 in Carlisle, Cumberland, Pennsylvania and we are pretty sure she is daughter of John Parkinson, one of the sons of William and Margaret Parkinson. Margaret died 6 Sept 1847 in Harveysburg, Wayne Township, Clinton County, Ohio. She is buried in the Jonah's Run Cemetery in Harveysburg. She lived from 1817 until after her husband Mitchel Died in 1836 in Lebanon, Turtle Creek Township, Warren County, Ohio. John had another son we know of named John who was born in about 1770 and died in 1836 in Decantur, Indiana. However, for a time he too lived in Lebanon, Warren County, Ohio, where he married. My 3rd great grandmother Ann Hart and her husband James Wills (who was born in Hunterdon, Mercer County, New Jersey and also traveled through Washington, Pa and is on the 1810 Census with his father William Wills...who settled in Lebanon, Warren, Ohio) who she married in Lebanon, Warren, Ohio also left Lebanon with John Parkison (they dropped the letter 'n') to Indiana at the same time he did and then moved on to Iowa where they died. So, now you have some information to mull over. Contact me with any questions you may have. Helen (Wills) Lehman @ hawlehman@cox.net

Her daughter Ida May (my great grandmother) married Adam H. Hewitt of Cumberland, Greene Co.,(son of John Hewitt of Amwell Township and Mary Milliken), and her other daughter Sarah Ellen married Andrew Lee Rothwell of Coal Center. Ida May lived for a time with the Deems family in Carmichaels. John Deems was married to Eliza Ailes daughter of Joseph Ailes of East Pike Run.

I love reading to my children and the pictures etc. here and along Ten Mile Creek. My family are Russian Old Believers who are buried at the St. Nickolas Cemetary and attended services from the day it was built. Both sides of my family worked and lived throughout Washington County. I still have my Grandfathers papers calling him to service in WWI. However I would love a newspaper article of my Grandfathers death, he left my grandmother with eight children, and they were not taken away but stayed together which was so unheard of at that time. After reading and the research I have decided to plan a trip back to walk that area again soon.

My cousins still live in the Northern area of the county around Houston, Canonsburg, Murray, etc. I am beginning to research my father's family tree. My father was born 1901 in Cherry Valley, Blanchard Taylor Hindman.
He lived in the Pittsburgh area as a young man and settled in Ohio in 1945, married my mother. I was born and raised in Akron, OH area.
This is a wonderful website, I found it very interesting, although i did not find any verified information regarding any family ancestors.

Comments:
I remember Caldwell Drug Store, Roosevelt Theatre and all of Bentleyville very well. My father settled in Bentleyville somewhere around 1908 and worked at the Gibson Mine for some 40 years. When I was growing up in the late 40's early 50's, I remember walking that long mile or so to and from grade school in the (what I thought) was deep snow. First through third grades were at the high school on Washington St. Fourth through sixth grades were at the small school near Pittsburgh Rd....then back to High School on Washington St. for seventh through twelfth grades. I lived "back the brewery." You have created a beautiful web-site and I will visit often. Maybe you'll hear from some of the "back the brewery" clan. If you need some other facts from late 40's and the 50's I'll be glad to provide what I know. I'm looking for someone who can give me some information on the little Cemetary near Gibson. I believe it was Kirkland or Kirkwell. Good Luck with your site.

I just discovered your site while trying to find the family & community of Betty Hill. In about 1860 she arrived in California having crossed the country riding an Ox, according to our family stories. Other comments on this web site show me that the names of old families of your churches also dot our family tree. Wise, Hardman, Hill, Hostetler are examples. My hunch is that Betty was already very familar with our other ancestors before she single-handedly(?) left to join them in California with the Herd of Oxen. The others preceeded her generally arriving in Napa, Ca in the 1848 time frame. My hope is that the "Joseph Hill" of your church has a connection to our Betty Hill and that someone reading this knows the connection. I look foreward to exploring this site!

Two children born in Hickory: Jane Alvina Miller b: 1826; Thomas Jefferson Miller b: 25 December 1928. Do these names appear in any of your records. I am trying to trace Mary Ann McFarland specifically as I do have a lot of info on the rest of the family, but will welcome any info you might pass on. Samuel J. died on 20 Feb 1885 in Mt. Sterling, Van Buren Cty, Iowa.

Memory of an event or time in the County? Human Fly scaling the Court House !
Comments:
Judy, I Knew You Could Do It! Web site is a KEEPER!
My memory: Tater McKensie was called the Human Fly (among other things). He was quite interested in the History of Washington County. I was about 5 years old in about 1934/35 living in West End when my Dad took my Mom, my brother Sonny and me uptown to watch "Tater" scale the outside of the Court House. He carried a very large sack of bread, throwing loaves down to the crowd below. The sack was empty as he reached the top of the dome. He then climbed up the statue of George Washington and stood on his head (feet straight up in the air) on the head of George Washington. It was very exciting for a child to see. I think of it still when I see the Court House.
