My book Cadets on Camps: History of Military School in the United States is being published by Texas A&M Press. I am interested in the photo the Duplin Grays Company E, 20th North Carolina Infantry you have on your site. This organization was formed around the Franklin Military Institute.
Any assistance, suggestions and a document I can use as authorized use would be appreciated. I am currently making final changes for Texas A&M Press with a suspense of 15 March. This has been a nine year project with approximately 434 pages in the manuscript, however never thought about illustrations beyond the charts and tables I have produced.

I am looking for Hanse Wells Cemetery. The information I have is from the WPA survey that was done in 1938 by Roland Boney. Has there been any recent surveys?

Cemetery notes and/or description:
Compiled by Historical Records Cemetery Survey of North Carolina 1938. Surveyed by Rolland B. Boney

"Located about 3 miles West of Wallace, N. C. on Rockfish Creek, on the Joe Wells Plantation - 400 yards from the old home place - 1/4 mile from the Rose Hill and Wallace Highway via Rockfish Church"

The above survey was done in 1938 when the cemetery was still in existence. The cemetery may no longer be in existence or is now on private property. Looking at maps of Duplin County from 1930's and 1940's it appears that Hwy 41 going west out of Wallace is the road it is speaking of. Rockfish Presbyterian Church is on Hwy 41 west of Wallace, NC. Joseph Wells gift deeded 260 acres in Rockfish Township to Robert H. "Hanse" Wells on Sep 24 1869. Deed Book 26 page 82. I do not have the exact location of the property but this is most likely the closest location. Is there anyway to locate the property that was once Joseph Wells. Robert H."Hanse" Wells is buried in the Rockfish Presbyterian Church Cemetery.

I am in California and can not come there so any assistance would be greatly appreciated. I have added the cemetery to the Findagrave website and the people listed as buried there in the 1938 survey. Is Rolland Boney still alive?

I am searching for my grandmother, Nellie Cola Jones, daughter of William and Sarah Jones, both deceased according to her marriage license. She wed William H. Mintz in 1889 in Wilmington at First Baptist. I found on the 1880 census a Mely Coly Jones (1873) living with Jemimmah and Marenda Jones. Marenda is the daughter of Jemimmah and Griffin Jones (died between 1860 and 1870). I believe both Jemimmah and Marenda died sometime after 1880 (no documentation found) and Mely went to live with Rogers family in Wilmington. Rogers family was neighbors in Duplin in 1870 census. I believe Marenda (1846) was a servant in the Pigford family household because Mely talked about Maybelle and Alice Pigford and she might have worked there too. I put an add in the Duplin County newspaper last summer about the Jones Family but had no responses. Marenda's sister, Rachel (1850#, married Gabriel H. Whitman in 1870 and I believe she died sometime after 1880 too because I cannot find any information about her after 1880. Another sibling was Lewis Riles Jones and I have traced his family through 1940. Nathan J Jones died in Lynchburg, VA in 1863 of disease. I cannot find Temperance J #1828#, David F #1838#, and Dicy #1845). These seven children were listed on the 1850 Census with parents Griffin and Jemimma Jones. All this may be moot if Mely Coly is not my Nellie Cola but everything points in this direction and all the others I have traced have not panned out. Any help will be appreciated

Congratulations on your impressive site and the copious records you have made available. I stumbled across your website when I finally tracked down my 2nd cousin, Doreen Violet Baker Krause. Doreen Violet Baker, an Australian married Frank Krause 6 Sep 1945 in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia, before emigrating to the US to join her husband. They are both listed as being buried in the Devotional Gardens Cemetery, and I was a little disappointed not to find a photograph (perhaps I went through the photos too quickly in my eagerness; I'll have to look again#. Thank you for the tremendous work done by your researchers and historians. Regards and best wishes. Bev Bonning #Australia)

Dear Diane Siniard,

I enjoy reading about all of the history in Duplin County.I have explored the various fields, abandoned farm houses and barns around it. My Grandparents live on a small farm north of Kenansville on Highway 11. The land was named the Madie Grady Farm according to word of mouth (Aka My Dad). I was just wondering if you could confirm that? There was also a small house that sat on the property before it was moved to a piece of land on Sarecta Rd. I will try to reach you later when I have more info on the Farm. If you could give me any information on the people who lived/worked the land and the history of it that will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Skylar Dove

Hi Diane, I was surprised to find that your old websites had disappeared. I'm so happy to have found this one. I've been doing a lot of research on ancestry.com, and have come a great distance since we spoke last.

I have photos of the hospital where Marley died. Would you like them for your site?

Also, have found quite a bit info on Marley's children. Bettie "Wood" was not Mary and Marley's child. She was Mary's and Allen Thigpen's child, born a year and more after Marley died. Allen married Mary in 1863, soon after Marley died. In fact, when she traveled in 1863 to the Exchange Hotel/Receiving Hospital in Gordonsville to collect Marley's few effects (including $12 in pay), she was already "Mrs. Thigpen" on the receipt she signed.

At any rate, glad to see you're alive and kicking, and please add me to your list of researchers.

Diane,
You have done such a wonderful job with this site! I still have more deeds for you that I am working on. I am still transcribing all those that you sent to me plus some that I went down and got copies of. I am really impressed with the amount of information that you have gathered and that researchers have sent in to put on this site. Especially all of the cemeteries that Lillian and Pearl Houston have gotten and photographed to put on here. Those are such a blessing for all of us!. I will definitely get busy and see if I can't pull my weight and get more information sent to you to add to the site. I would love to see this site grow even more than what it is now. I am glad to see you see happy now since you left the other project. I see a real difference in you when we met for lunch the other day. Although it is horrible there is no cure for your knee and you will have to live like this for the rest of your life. I am so sorry.
Anyway, let me get busy getting more deeds transcribed and then I will see what else I can get copies of to transcribe for you to put on the site.
Lots of love!
Joanie

I have some information , but am searching for more details. Susan Jane Hussey, the daughter of Col. John Edward Hussey and Jane Thomas, was married. first to a John B. Hussey and had children John Edward Hussey and Margaret Kittleband Hussey. John Edward Hussey married Zilphia Ann Smith ,and they were the parents of Lottie, Edward, Kator Bryant, and McCoy Hussey. McCoy Hussey was my grandfather. I look forward to hearing from you and learning more about the Husseys of North Carolina and South Carolina.

I have enjoyed this website so much. I am a 45 year old school teacher who lives in Sarecta, North Carolina. I looked on the web link genealogy of Dr. William Houston but could not find any connection to any of my ancestors: James Robert Houston and his wife Annie Boney Houston. They are buried in a cemetery behind my house on North Williams Road. I live on family land that has been in our family for generations. This land is about 1/2 mile from the bluff that Dr. William Houston lived on. I can't help but think that I am related in some way. I have land maps and deeds that have the name Sam Houston on them also. Please help, if you can. Thanks so much!!

You folks in Duplin have and are doing an extraordinary job with your history/geneology!

I know that my Great Great Grandmother Whitledge (spelled on the 1850 census as Whittleage) was living in Duplin Co. in 1850 with her three daughters: Rachel (Rainer--married Marshall Rainer), Sarah and Zilpha. My Great Grandfather Solomon N. (Nixon) Cole was living there in 1850 with his 1/2 year old son Amos Cole. I believe that Solomon's first wife, Molsey Brock Cole, died maybe even at childbirth, as they were married in 1849 and she was not listed on the 1850 census with them in Duplin Co. Solomon Cole and Sarah Whitledge were married in 1852 there in Duplin Co., but are recorded in the 1860 census as living in Moore Co. Solomon was mustered into the Civil War at Carthage, Moore Co. in 1861 and died August 13, 1864 at Petersburg General Hospital, Petersburg, Va. I would love to find the graves of Molsey Brock Cole and my Great Great Grandfather William Whitledge (not sure of how it was spelled then, as it is misspelled on the 1850 census). Both must have died in Duplin Co. After Solomon died the families of Whitledge/Cole moved to Orange Co., NC and all show up there in the 1880 Census. Today I live in the house that Sarah Whitlege Cole bought as a CW widow with six children in 1878. My 87 year old Mother, Mildred Cole Cooke, lives here too.

Thank you kindly.

I looked for the Houston Cemetery. I found it listed with the photos section. Thanks! I did not find the one I was looking for. William Houston, the stamp master, a physician at Sarecta. All my grand mother's family came from this one man. I wish I could find more about him. Thanks for all the fine work coming from your area.

I'm searching for information on James Whaley who left orphan children in Onslow county in 1794. He is my gr-gr-gr-gr-gr grandfather. I saw a post on the surname site that said a James Whaley had and estate in Onslow and Duplin counties, so I wonder if this my be my gr-gr-gr-gr grandmother Mahala's father.

I like your site.

I enjoy your website. Thanks for posting the transcripts of Arthur "Matthis'" pension application and his pension certificate. He and his uncle(?) Jacob Mathews were two of the progenitors of the Mat(t)hews or Mat(t)hews family in Duplin County. (Their names were spelled four different ways in the first five federal censuses.) I also have and would like to post on your website if you can provide a place to put it all, photocopies of the following documents:

1. Copies of all the paperwork related to the 1784 land grant of 250 acres in Duplin County awarded to Arthur Mathews based upon the 1779 "entry" of William Mathews, and the subsequent 1782 survey for Arthur Mathews, heir-at- law of William Mathews deceased.
2. A copy of the 1785 military warrant for 640 acres of the states western lands set aside for North Carolina soldiers of the Revolution issued to the heirs of Wm. Mathews, deceased, shown endorsed (sold)three days later by Joseph Matthews.
3. The records of the 1815-1818 estate administration of Joseph Mathews of Duplin County, N.C. showing that Arthur Mathews attended the estate sale and made a purchase.
