Does anyone remember Sidney and Jenny Mae Yancey or Sam
and Maggie Jordan? My grandfather Sam Jordan was chief engineer in Columbus, and when he retired he moved to Redan. My grandmother spoke frequently about Porterdale.

My daddy worked at the mill in the 30-40s. I have been to Porterdale several times back in the 50s and stayed at the hotel with my aunt Lois ,uncle Henry and sandra. Those were some GREAT memories.I've eaten at the hotel back in 2001 with my wife Samm and Sandra. Very impressed. Will be at the 2009 reunion. Andy Burch

My name is Tommy Thomason and I was born in the Porterdale hospital on November 3rd 1949 and grew up at #5 Peachtree Street. My dad was Paul T. Thomason and my mom was Sarah Grace (Pickett) Thomason, both of whom worked for the Bibb Company, My dad for 45 years and my mom for 40. Porterdale was the town to live in back in those days. My parents never worried about me playing away from home all day at the age of 7 or 8 because, unlike today, they could trust the entire neighborhood to watch out for all the kids. If a neighbor saw me doing something I shouldn't I was apt to get a "whuppin'" from them and another when I got home because they would call and tell on me. Homemade wagons? Yeah, I built a couple from scarp lumber with discarded steel gears for wheels. I got the gears from the old steam plant by the baseball field next to the Yellow River. They worked great but the teeth on the gears made a heck of a roaring sound as I raced down Birch Street, or Birch Hill as we called it. I would love to have the chance to relive just one of those summer days, but I'll have to be content with the memories as those times are gone for good.

Hi,
I was born and raised in Porterdale, GA 40 North Broad St by my Mother, and and her mother and father Thelma Miller Crowell and (H.G. "Guy" Crowell Sr.) 1953-1970. I attended Newton County High School. I worked at the Porterdale Golf Club and the Porterdale Pool from 1963-1970 with my Grandfather and Uncle "B.C. Crowell" my uncle.

I was a member of the Julia A. Porter Memorial Methodist Church. Ms. Lucille Shaw was the person whom inspired me to sing. So, I did take her advise! Since that time, I'm proud to say I made a sucessful career singing, acting and recording for over 30 years. Thank you Ms.Shaw you will live in my heart and memories forever.

My mother worked for the Bibb Mfg. Co. for several decades in the offices above the Porterdale "Standard Pharmacy" and the Grocery Store "Grill" where you could pick-up a cheese burger for $ .25 ea. What a deal!!!

Other than that, I was involved in many civic outings, tallent shows, golfing and swimming events. Now, I enjoy my family, children and grandchildren. I still sing, do charity events, private consulting (Computer Industry Related) and investigations public / private. Gosh! how time does pass by very quickly...... "mercy"

Will Remain,
Gene Johnson, Ph.D.

We have visited your website and love it. We have been
through Porterdale back in the late 70s and 80s when we
lived in Walton County. We drove back through last year
and were in amazement of this town now. We are considering
moving there soon to retire.

My parents were Marvin S. Chapman and Ellen Ruth "Loyd" Chapman. They worked for the Bibb most of their lives and lived in Porterdale @ 38 Ivy Street the later years. I went to Porterdale school and also had my turn working for the Bibb "even though I didn't last long." I moved when I married Fred Bankston Jr. in 1966. Fred is the son of Fred Bankston and Lavada Mae 'Johnson" Bankston who worked for the Bibb most of her life. We are still in Covington. We have 2 Children and 3 Grandchildren, all are in this area. Fred has retired now and I will retire from General Mills in April, after 19 years. We were at the picnic last year and plan on attending all of them. We had so much fun and got to see many old fiends and classmates. I visit the site often, looking for more pictures and information.

I taught at the Old Porterdale Elementary School the last two years it was in operation '71-'73. My friend, Joan Ingram, and I were fresh out of college and both taught 3rd grade there. Those were some great times! Joan has retired and moved back to TN but I am still at "New Porterdale" Elem. I'd love to hear from any of my former students. I am going to try to get my slides and pictures together one day.

"I call it home". I spent the first 23 years of my life there. I lived at 48 poplar street and before my dad restored the house, his grandmother Ruth Maloy lived in it.
My granddaddy on my mamas side was the late Wallace "Happy" Edwards. Imiss my childhood. I have begain a book that includes most of my days in my home town, Porterdale! I love to talk about it. I am a 3rd generation from there and I don't regret it at all. As a matter of fact my hand print and name along with the date is on the right side of the "back steps" just outside of the backporch.

I don't know how I missed the guestbook the first time I came to this site. I love it. My grandmother gave me an appreciation for history and antiques, and all of those things that add up to a life well lived. I had a curiosity for Porterdale the first time I saw it and that has grown into a passion. I am hoping to buy one of the mill houses and make it my own. I plan to live there and expect it to be my last home purchase. I enjoy so much looking at these pictures and reading these life stories. Thank you for sharing and hopefully I'll get the chance to meet many of you soon. Sincerely, Deanna Kelly
