My brick wall is an elusive ancestor, David Dixon (Dickson?) BRIGGS born Rome Oneida NY either 1822 or abt Feb 1833 depending on which document from later in his life we believe. Father possibly carpenter or cabinet maker, Quakers in the family, possibly at least two sisters. Oral history has him running away from home age abt 12, going to MA or ME, then heading off whaling into the South Pacific. Disowned by parents as a result and unlikely to be mentioned at all by them in wills etc. He ended up being thrown off the boat / deserting / escaping in New Zealand where he died in 1908. Possible grandson of the Ebenezer or Joseph BRIGGS families. What we're looking for is newspaper ads, articles etc pre 1840 hopefully to find the professions / middle names etc of Ebenezer and Joseph's sons. The only profession we know definitely is Allan was a blacksmith. Any suggestions of where scanned copies of old rome sentinel etc on line might be, gratefully appreciated.

I am researching a Rome NY man named Alexander Stenyk. He is buried in Rome Cemetery. If there is anyone in your group who could help me find his obituary, or anything else, I would appreciate and gladly pay for your time. I am a Historic Preservation Specialist at a military installation where Alex served shortly after WWI. While here, be built a structure which has been a source of mystery and awe for the past 90 years. I wish to contact a relative who might have a photo of him, and to find some details of his military life. A display has been set up in our museum with a replica of the building he built, but it was not until recently that previously unknown sources have shown us the mystery builder was Private Alexander Stenyk. I wish to insure he is duly credited.
Alex Stenyk was an immigrant from Austrian Poland, born 26 March 1886 (another source gives 25 Mar 1890). Died 29 Oct 1969, buried Rome Cemetery, I believe in section 158 - MM. He was a devout member of the Greek Orthodox Church, and it was his devotion to God and Church that really became his legacy here. He would certainly have been a member of that church when he lived in Rome. I do not know how long he lived in Rome. His half sister, Anastasia Chomo Fedon, died 17 Jan 1992, and said to be buried in Rome NY.
I will gladly pay a fee or donation for any help in this. Thank you,

Name: Darla Bedford Moe <firstname.lastname@example.org> Date: 2010-10-30 Surnames of interest Burtch Comments:
I was born in Rome, but left for California with my family in the 1960's. My ancestor John M. Burtch was born in Rome in 1861. His parents were Philo K. & Mary (maiden name unknown) Burtch. John and his older sisters Grace and Hattie were placed in orphan homes. I don't know when, and I don't know if this is because one or both parents died. Grace Burtch "married and moved west". Hattie Burtch married a Beebe and lived in Adams, Jefferson Co., NY. John was adopted by David Crawe of Earlville, Madison County, NY, and his surname was changed to Crawe. Philo K. Burtch is buried in Montgomery County (with his Burtch family there), but no death date is given on his gravestone. I don't know what happened to Mary Burtch, wife of Philo and mother of Grace, Hattie, & John. Philo, Mary, Grace, and Hattie are shown in the 1860 census for Rome, ages 27, 20, 4, and 1. A "Mary A. Burtch, widow of Philo", is listed in Hayne's and Rome City Directories in 1893, qnd 1901-02. Philo Burtch was a carpenter, and a Civil War soldier. I'm looking for death records for Philo and Mary Burtch, for Mary's maiden name, and for more information about why the children were placed in orphan homes.

My family search has led me to consider Rome as t6he possible location for my family which originated in the Rome-Holland Patent-Steuben, trenton area. An 1800 Rome cesus lists @William Johnson as a landowner.Below is my outline of descent from your area.
My name is Paul J Johnson and I believe Sir William Johnson's Indian son John my ggggrandfather, was possibly born to an oneida girl, according to oral family history.
Following in line are his son william johnson who had 3 sons Abraham b.1795, Isaac b.1800 and Jacob b.1805 who (with Abraham) came to cramahe twnsp Ontario Canada, in 1821, bought a farm there in 1825(fom a former Rome resident named Joel Draper), and is
my ggrandfather his son being my grandfather john; and finally my father john.
We think abram and Jacob came from the Holland Patent-Rome-Steuben, Trenton area but have not
confirmed this however I note that William was resident in the town of Steuben in 1850 (his name appears on a map of the town).Isaac came to canada much later to stay with his brothers when in the 1850's, having stayed I suppose with his father william or mother until
then. Have you leads for information on the possible location for the family
in your area?
We have in the family possession 2 powder horns, with
typed claims concerning ggggranfather john serving with washington as a
scout in the revolutionary war.
Please let me have your advice about establishing where the family were located.
Paul J Johnson

My Dad and sister have been researching family history for years and I just recently started to join in. Our Griffin Family (John and Mary Steel)came from Ireland in the mid 1800s and settled in Rome to raise children John, Dennis, Mary, James, Ann, Margaret and Jeremiah. Some worked for the railroad, and stayed on there. My G_Grandfather James came to Buffalo NY to raise his family and that's where we live still. Have found much useful info on the web, and hope to be able to visit Rome one day.
