Comments:
My name is Trevor Batts and I have lived in Elizabeth City for approx 14 years permanently. I was born in Reading, England and traced my family history back a couple of 100 yrs to my family being leather traders in Chipping Norton, England. Well, here I am living in Pasq county (weeksville) and I learn about Nathaniel Batts and his history of the local area.. This got me interested in Nathaniel's story and I've been reading about him on various media.

My question to you is.. do you know of and could you put me in contact with any local historians that may be able to help me go back to Nathaniel's English roots. I would love to know if he was ever a blood relative of mine.

If you have anything you think I may be interested in please contact me by email.

Thank You for your time,
Trevor Batts.

I have published a document on my Mother's ancestors from the 1600's to 1914 which includes them being in Pasquotank County from at least 1690 to at least 1730. The family name is Sawyer.

An additional copy or two are available and I was wondering where I might send the document for future use by genealogist?

Hi,
I am working on a NC nursing history project "100 nurses/100 Counties". It seems one outstanding nurse from Pasquotank County was Mary Elizabeth Hill (Furtwangler) who was a nurse and Navy Ensign in WWII. I am hoping you have more information about her. She was the oldest daughter of Grover and Mattie (?) Hill and by aged 22 was already a nurse working at a local hospital. Do you have other information about her? Do you have other suggestions for outstanding nurses from Pasquotank County?
Thank you so much,
Phoebe Pollitt

What surnames are you researching and what do you find most usef Overtons
Comments:
we have some 50,000 Overtons in in files of all colours, races & religions.
However We must point out that early censuses do NOT give "African-American" they clearly say Free people of colour or coloured, FPC or sometime Mulatto. Only the latter would for certain indicate "Negro" ancestry. Many of the FPC are Jews, Spanish, Portugese, Mestizos. the term was used for almost anyone not appearing "anglo-Saxon" looking. Tho most were Free mixed Negro/Caucasian.
By automatically play PCness games, you are at least sometimes miscategorizing individuals. TSk TSk try to be professional , not PC opinions. (old people like me, can be so picky about accuracy).
But this a good site. We pull data from it to update our files & feel free to direct area Overtons to us.

I would like to vacation at Pasqoutank and Elizabeth City. I met many people in Maryland from the area. Little did I know my ancestors and great grandparents on my mothers side were born here.

Maternal great grandfather and mother: Theophilus and Louise Overton AKA Officer (Theophilus). They lived in Norfolk/Fentress/Chesapeake Virginia also.
Great, great grandfather and mother: Theophilus and Lucinda Overton.

A cousin of mine told me that a relative built the first Black school in this area. I read a Black school history of the area.

I would like to visit in the near future. I like to say, I been there were they were born and raised.

First of all I think you are doing a great job. However, The information you have concerning Mark Murray is confusing. There were two Mark Murray's that applied for their Revolutionary War Pensions. One was from Virginia and the other was from Halifax, North Carolina. To confuse things even more, the 1850 U.S. Census of Wilson County, Tennessee states that Mark Murray was born in Virginia. Mark states in over 70 pages of depositions and affidavits that he was born in Halifax, North Carolina near Martin County. I noticed that Paul Heinegg also incorrectly combined the two Mark Murrays. Mark Murray from Virginia has over 50 pages of depositions and affidavits. It is unfortunate that neither men received their Revolutionary War pensions.

I did not realize there was another genealogy site for this area aside from the GenWeb site. I had become frustrated with GenWeb years ago and had not even tried to use it in a long time. Congratulations to you - this is so much better than GenWeb in so many ways. I can see that you are really interested in getting as much information as possible online for those of us who cannot always get "to the source," and who cannot pay exorbitant prices for information that is, after all, a matter of public record. I've been to Eliz.City and Camden doing research and I know that there is a wealth of information just waiting to be transcribed and put online. I'm 73 years old and can't get up that way very often anymore (I live in Greenville, NC) and when I do, I tire easily and don't get as much done as I'd like. I'll be glad to help if there's anything I can do from here - I'm an excellent typist and still an above-average proof reader. Will sign-up to volunteer.

Again, thanks for all that you're doing - and thanks for contacting me about the Tuttle burying ground in Okisko.

I was presently doing research on Black Schools in Elizabeth City and Pasquotank County for a speech I am to make Labor Day Weekend. I was unable to find information on Palmyra School which was located on Shillingtown Road (the structure is still in existence). My mother, Inez H. Bolden served as the Principal/Teacher at this school sometime imediately following 1944 until the early 1950s. I attended Bank Street School and noted that the date is incorrect for the structure of the brick building. It was a wooden building until the early 1950s after it was burned due to an electrical fire.
