Are you also interested in the Martin family?
Lillian was the daughter of John Martin and Lillian Alma Fassett. I think John's parents came from the area here in Germany where I live.

I am the last Dennison on this branch of the family tree other than my wife and kids.

See previous posting below.

Other corrections to the obituary for Twila Yard as printed in the newspaper are the spellings of her mother's name. It should be Mabel Hortense Peck as you will see on the Majorville web site page for Twila's parents. Twila told me she was criticized for providing for Majorville Cemetery in her estate. Her contributions benefit all of us who have relatives buried there.

Twila Yard died June 5, 2008, with burial June 7 at Majorville Cemetery. It is my understanding that Twila included Majorville Cemetery as a benefactor in her estate plans. She was the donor of the memorial marker which was erected at the site of the Majorville Church. Twila's obituary can be found online on the Burlington Hawkeye newspaper. It states that she was the daughter of Lawrence Yetter and Mable Hortence Park Day. However, Twila's mother was Mable Peck. If you cannot access the obituary, contact me and I will send it to you.

Majorville Church building was demolished with no materials being salvaged. According to oral family history, Eliza Siepel, my great-great-grandmother donated timber from the Siepel farm that was used to make lumber for the new church, probably some of the walnut studs you saw which were exposed by vandals.

The Majorville Church records were microfilmed and are available through family history libraries. You can locate the title of the microfilm reel at the Family Search
web site.

Do you have someone buried at Majorville? yes-early Huston relatives
Comments:
My family just learned of the Majorville connection a few years ago, and my cousin and I have visited several times and think it is a neat place. I have wondered about the fate of the church materials as I think the studs exposed via vandals were all something like 3" x 8" or so walnut.
I also learned somewhere that the property/church was/is under control of a Methodist church in Blandensville. Point being that maybe that church has paperwork of the early church congregation at Majorville. Maybe someone knows about that and could check.
We worked on deciphering some of the inscriptions on the big Huston stone and so maybe Mike or I will post what we found.

I was born and raised about 200 yards from Majorville church. Our house was the old Simmons place north of the church and cemetary. I now own that 160 acre farm and my nephew owns the old Pogue farm east. Sadly, with my latest visit in May, 04 back to that area I found the church gutted of all the windows and pews, the roof had 3 holes in it and it had become just a shell of a building. A local neighbor, Twila Yard, who claims she's still a "trustee" of the church wants it torn down, which might be the merciful thing to do. A sad ending to the legacy of so many forefathers and mothers who built it, worshiped there, and died and were buried in it's grounds. May God bless the church that once was Majorville. BC

Suggestions for additions to this site? Pleasing site
Comments:
I am a descendant of John (Major) Williams and his first wife, Mary.
Family history recorded by my grandmother, Goldie B. Williams, indicates that John was the son of Nathan Williams who was born in Newberry, SC in 1764. The history also states that John was born near Charleston, SC on October 12, 1791, that he obtained the rank of Major in the War of 1812 and that he was a wheelwright by trade and followed the teachings of John Wesley.
According to grandma my grandfather, Charlie Lee Williams, was the son of Frederick McCorcle Williams who was the son of Elijah Pope Williams who was the son of Patrick McCorcle Williams who was the second son of John and Mary Jones Williams.
I have a picture of Patrick McCorcle Williams and he appears to be a very stern man.
I'd like to hear from others who are descended from John (Major) Williams and would most appreciate additional family anecdotes. Does anyone have any information about John Williams and his time in the military?
Does anyone have any information about John's father, Nathan?

I lived just north within sight of the church. I went to very early Sunday school there, and my mother, Maxine, played the piano for the hymns we sang! Who remembers the ice cream socials held beside the church south on blankets under the big old hickory trees? Years later, a man with a metal detector covered that area, and found coins, watches, rings, a treasure trove of artifacts from those outings! I once tried to teach myself to play the piano on that old left-behind piano, but by that time, a squirrel family had set up housekeeping in it .. made for some weird sounds!?? Even as the church is a sad shell now, it's still God's house, and He knows that even if the world has forgotten. B

I am so glad that someone has put all the effort into making this wonderful website. My father and I have been searching for anything about Bryant C Cartwright who moved from Allegany Co, NY, to Fountain Green in 1845 along with his sister, Mrs Phebe Palmer, and other members of his family. I was thrilled when I found all the information in the virtual cemetary about the Palmers, as that is the closest I have been able to get to Bryant. Someone from Hancock County historical society told my father that Bryant C Cartwright was mustered out in 1865 for the guards in the Civil War, so we are guessing he may have died during the war. If anyone runs across anything about him, I would love to know about it. Thanks to the webmaster for putting together such an informative site!

Remarkable site. My dad told me about it -- Bob Campbell, son of Bernard and Maxine. I played in the old Majorville church as a kid -- I also remember Doris, Ira/Ari, and Irvin Pogue -- had lunch at their house a few times as a young boy, and remember their parking that old Plymouth Valiant or whatever it was in the field west of their house. I got a kick out of seeing my grandpa in his 1927 school picture -- also saw relatives that I never met -- including my great, great grandfather John Campbell and his wife Agnes. The last of the Majorville pictures is viewing north, and shows one of the buildings of the Campbell farm. Nice memories -- thanks.

Best Wishes -- Mike Campbell.

I am curious if there were any SPOONAMORE/SPOONEMORE/SPONHMEIR in this area that any one might know of. FLORENCE JANE BLOYD/HESS's mother was MARTHA ELLEN SPOONEMORE and her father was JOHN BLOYD. I believe MARTHA was born in Blandinsville, IL and her mother's maiden name was BROWN.

Hi Pam,

Thanks for the tweak. I just recently started putting in the links between tombstone pages and I haven't quite figured out how deep I want to go, e.g., immediately family only or aunts, uncles, etc., and with so many right there in Majorville I've wondered if I've bitten off more than I can chew. Yes, according to what I have, Thomas G. Wright was a brother to Martha, and therefore would have been the uncle of Ella Florence Yetter Day.

May I ask who your husband's grandmother is?

I am particularly interested in Thomas Burton Yetter (abt. 1860-1919), one of the sons of Martha E. Wright and Lewis R. Yetter. In 1884 Thomas married Emma McGee (1862-1940), who was a half-sister to my great-grandfather, Henry Clay McGee. I don't have much information on my McGees and would love to learn more.

Back to Martha, Thomas and their father, Hickerson Wright, for some reason Hick Wright caught my interest some time ago and I began collecting information on him. Later on I was really glad I did, because his extended family and their marriages provided numerous links between my various family lines.

I'd love to hear from you again.

Do you have someone buried at Majorville? "Major" John Williams, b. 1791
Is there someone you're searching for? Brick wall? Looking for the name of major John Williams' first wife, probably from Union Co., SC, and mother of Lemuel Rhodes W., b. 1814 SC
Comments:
I'd love to correspond with any WILLIAMS connections from the Hancock Co. and McDonough Co. IL area. "Major" John Williams was born in 1791 in NC, and moved with his family to Union Co., SC where his son, Lemuel Rhodes was born in 1814. His second son, Patrick McCorkle, was born in 1817 in Trigg Co., KY, on the way to IL. Elizabeth was born in 1829 in IL. Lemuel married Cassander Simmons in 1834 in Sangamon Co., IL, so they may have lived there for while before settling in Majorville, near Fountain Green. Lemuel and Cassander moved to Adair Co., MO in 1870, and Major John and his second wife, Letitia Jones Williams, are buried in the Majorville Church Cemetery. It would be fun to connect with descendants of his other children.

Maybe someone else will have information about any other booklets that were issued. This is the only one I know about. What's amazing to me is that there are sooo many genealogical clues in it. I'm glad you enjoyed looking through it.

Do you have someone buried at Majorville? Great & Great-great-Grandparents Siepel

Thank you, Marcia, for creating this bulletin board. Enjoyed the Souvenir booklet pages. Can anyone tell me if there was another version of that booklet published at another time?

My Great-grandparents John William & Martha "Mattie" Ellis Siepel and Great-great-grandparents, Philip Ira & Eliza Fawver Siepel, are buried at Majorville, as are many other descendants of Philip & Eliza Siepel.
