| My Success Story: | In February of this year, my mother's father died. She had always wanted a closer relationship with him as he had divorced her mother while she was very young. He remarried and had other children. She, up until the time of his remarriage, had spent time with his parents, her grandparents in the summer. She heard family tales. His death caused her to want to know more about the family, a way of establishing a connection. We were missing one link. She knew that "Grandpa Kitty" had been named Chalon Headley, but we could not find any information on him -- let alone linking him to the grandfather with whom she had summered. I started tracing every Headley I could find in OH and IL for that time frame. I found the Rootsweb obituary listings for Crawford Co, IL. One simply listed a Mrs. Headley. I asked the submitter if she could tell me which Mrs. Headley it was. In turn, she sent me several obituaries she had transcribed. One was for Chalon Headley and listed 5 children about whom we had not known. (Thank you, Cindy!) In addition, in submitting queries as to Chalon Headley, one young lady recognized the name as her grandfather's middle name. She turned out to be a niece, a daughter of one of the brothers my mother never knew. We've exchanged news and photos by email. Thanks for the links to family past and present. In return, I'm hoping to interest the local university and folklore center into allowing students to submit research on local cemeteries (and give them some sort of college credit) which we can then post on a Rootsweb site for everyone's use.

| My Success Story: | My wife had subscribed to RootsWeb Nova Scotia. While checking messages one day she discovered a message that used the surname Tufts (my maternal grandmother's birth mother). She called it to my attention and discovered that someone had submitted an inquiry, telling of a Mr. Adams who was the Tufts family historian and was in the processes of putting together a book on the Tufts. I had little information on my gm birth parents, but wrote Mr. Adams a letter enclosing a SASE telling him what I knew about my Tufts. He sent me a postcard chocked full of information about my Tufts. Not only did he give me my gm birth father's full name, Charles Hiram Tufts, but six generations including his parents. He also game me the birth mother's name as Mehitable "Annie" Young (which is of course my surname). I only had know she was Annie born in Nova Scotia (from the birth records). He also gave me "Annie" parents with maiden name of her mother, Dwyer, which I will be reseaching when I visit Halifax this summer. I will also contact Mr. Adams in MA while I am in Boston for an annual SAR Congress. Bob Young

| My Success Story: | Several years ago, maybe a year or so after I established a surname e-mail list with Rootsweb, I was surfing the web looking for anything with that unusual surname. I ran into a site called Angry Grandmothers - think the site had mainly to do with Grandparents who were being denied access to their grandchildren for what ever reason. However, one of the messages was from a young woman, Lois, who had been given up for adoption at birth and she was looking for her birth mother, she didn't want to cause any trouble. she just wanted her birth mother to know she'd had a good life, but she did want to know who she really was etc. Her research to date had told her she was born in Des Moines, Iowa and her maternal grandfather carried this unusual surname. So I wrote her back with the ususal disclaimers, I was NOT her her birth mother and didn't have a clue who her birth mother might be. But I knew that one branch of this family (Andrew and Ellen) had moved to the Des Moines area from Springfield County, Missouri in about 1895. I suspected that she was probably from some part of that line but I hadn't done any research past 1895 so I couldn't be any help with her more current relatives but I could tell her about her earlier family - clear back to before the revolutionary war. I invited her to join our list, even though she wasn't an active genealogist, which she did. I sent her everything I had on Andrew and Ellen and the rest of that family backwards. It is interesting that she claimed that although she still wanted to find her birth mother the genealogy materials I sent her about her earlier family really satisfied her need to know about her roots. This winter I developed a telephone list utilizing the Yahoo white pages for anyone with this unusual surname. The list members helped me determine who we already knew on that list (for as odd a name as it is - there were an unbelievable number of individuals). Armed with a list of those people of the ususal surname but who are of unknown linage (and understanding that to date all people with this surname in this country before 1900 have been descendents of our original felon ancestor) I have been randomly calling numbers on this list and engaging whoever answers the phone in a conversation about their surname. I've very pointedly asked about grandparents (and ususally have been able to connect the person I'm talking to with someone in my databases.) This generates much family interest on their part and they often have shared MUCH family information. I've gotten a number of answering machines or disconnects but to date no one has hung up on me or refused to talk to me - even after we have determine that their family came in 1925. One of the folks I talked to was a Mary in Des Moines, Iowa (there are a number of people with this surname in the area). She is 80 years old and a great grandchild of Andrew and Ellen. She shared some information over the phone and promised to dig me up some more in a little while. But she was really excited about the fact that our family is seriously considering publishing and hoped we would get something finished before she died. I sent her all the information I have sent Lois. I didn't hear anything back from her for several months and I assumed that was the end of it but one day I received two envelopes from her. She had been out walking cemeteries and interviewing family! She also sent me the current family list that included all the current family members, children, birth and marriage dates, addresses, phone and e-mail addresses. Putting all this material together with what she had told me during the phone interview I was pretty much able to determine who Lois' birth mother was - the grandfather had 6 children and only one daughter. I verified what Lois had told me about her information - birth grandfather and her birth date and then volunteered to be an intermediary. I called Mary in Des Moines and cleared up a few questions I had about the materials she had sent me and then asked/explained, in general terms, about Lois. Did she have any idea who the birth mother might have been? Or could it perhaps have been one of the other sons of Andrew and Ellen who was the grandfather? She didn't have a clue but she said she would check this out with her family and get back to me. Two days later at 6 am on a Sunday morning she called back. The birth mother (her neice) had been forced into giving up her baby and had been hunting for the lost baby ever since. They have been reunited by e-mail and phone and I understand are planning to visit each other soon. I would never have guessed I'd be involved in something like this when I started genealogy research. Names and places changed.

| My Success Story: | I finally found my mother's mother, grandmother, sister, two brothers, aunt, uncle and various nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews. A lot of them have already died, but two brothers are alive, I've traced one to Rochester, and the other one lives between Rochester and Buffalo. I finally got the nerve up Saturday to call mom's brother Francis, or Uncle Francis as I would call him, in Rochester, NY. We talked about an hour and I explained who I was, as my mom was adopted at birth and no-one in the family knew that my mother existed. He was very, very nice, very accepting that I was his niece and mom was his sister. He about fell out of his chair when I told him mom had 14 kids and about all the 25 grandkids and 37 greatgrandkids. He was so funny about it. He told me a lot about his family and his life, we had a very nice chat. I then called mom, and after we hung up, she got up her nerve and also called Francis. She really like him and they had a nice visit and hope to meet sometime in the future. He will be having his 50th anniversary sometime this year. Mom invited him to come down and visit her if he got the chance, in Florida. It was really nice. Mom was so excited. Thanks to the help of a lot of people on Rootsweb and other genealogy sites, query lists. A lot of wonderful people helped me get information in Monroe Co, NY, or I would have never gotten all the information together to trace my mom's birth family.. Thank you all so very much.

| My Success Story: | I have been a contributer to Rootsweb for two years and wanted to let you know how much I appreciate the resources you make available to genealogists. My interest in family history goes back many years. My mother and her siblings were born during the depression years. Due to a failed marriage, difficult financial conditions and tragic illness, the children were seperated and placed in various families. My mother has known of her parentage since her teen years. We are fortunate that she was adopted by her fathers family. That allowed a sense of knowing, in part, our heritage. I also allowed enough information to continue useful research on her mother's family. It has taken many years, but all of the children born to my grandparents had been located and re-united. The last brother was found in 1997. It was a wonderful reunion that was marred only by the fact that we had not yet located at least one child born to my grandmother, from a later marriage. As with many adoptions, we had no way of knowing what happened to my grandmother after she signed the final adoption papers. We were unable to locate any marriage or death record and no idea what name she had been using. After so many years of fruitless research I had neary given up on finding any more of the family. In January of 2000, I paid a visit to the Rootsweb page and was pleased to see an updated version of the Social Security Death Index. I immediately began searching my usual list of names, including my grandmother and her known siblings. I received a match for my grandmothers youngest sister and her husband. The social security index listed both with a last address in a small community in Missouri. I followed the links, provided by Rootsweb, and arrived at the Wright County, Mo genweb page. The Wright County genweb page happened to have listed obituaries from the local funeral homes. I did a quick search and found an obituary for my grandmothers older brother, listing his survivors. I followed up this information on the white pages and found a likely name listed in the small town of Hartville, Mo. With shaking hands I dialed the number and attempted to explain the reason for my call. Fortunately, my new found cousins listened long enough to know that I was not telemarketer! We had a very nice chat and they did indeed have a little information on my grandmothers family, including her married name and the names of two children born after 1940. Having exhausted the Rootsweb page, I took the new information and searched the IGI files of the LDS church. I did indeed find information on my grandmother as well as a list of submitters. Being the impatient person that I am, I could not wait for a reply by mail. I again used a computer search to locate phone numbers of the submitters. On my first attempt, I reached a very kind woman who listened long enough to understand my request. She gladly gave me the phone number to another family member who had more information. At this point I wanted to verify the information I had received. I had no way of knowing what my mother's half brother and sister knew of thier mother's past marriage. When I reached the subitter, I provided her with the information I had and why I believed that the person she submitted to the IGI was my grandmother. As it turns out, she is the older step sister to my mother's half siblings. She spent an hour on the telephone with me and assured me that my new found family would greet us with open arms. We have since had numerous phone conversations with my aunt and uncle. We have had a brief weekend reunion and are planning a big family reunion in July. My mother and her brothers and sisters have up sixty years of catching up to do. Our family if so very fortunate. The extended family inculdes seven children all of them raised in different families. They are all loving and wonderful people. Thanks to Rootsweb, my mother now knows where her biological mother is buried. She has been reunited with all of her siblings and some of her mother's family. Our family continues to grow and thrive. Thank You! Christine Roberts
