I've known for years that census indexes can be wrong. "See the record for yourself" is excellent advice. I've now decided "See both the index & the record for yourself." I've searched for 10 years for the children from Olmstead Lewis of LaGrange Co., IN. I've crawled through miles of microfilm. Yesterday, during random surfing, I stopped at the University of Michigan's website for the 1870 census. Since LaGrange borders Michigan, looking at the southern counties seemed like a good idea. I've done it before, but it doesn't hurt to double check. The University provides an index and is slowly copying the census pages themselves. I saw Robert and Lafayette Lewis in Berrien Co. To my delight, their page was one of those available for scanning. The last names didn't look like "Lewis" to me. The first names of the brothers and their spouses, their ages & birthplaces, however, were all "right." I rushed over to World Connect and found two people listing the same Robert Lewis. It's the first time in 20 years I've had a partner researching the same line. What a break, and what a good lesson.
