A story of Survivors of the wreck of HMS Birkenhead 50 years later
A large troopship, HMS Birkenhead, with about 638 men women and children on board, was sailing off the coast of Africa on a clear night on 26th February 1852 carrying reinforcements for the troops engaged in the Kaffir War. As Captain Salmond was anxious to shorten the voyage and the sea was calm he kept at near as possible to the shore. Off Cape Danger the vessel suddenly struck a sunken rock with such force that within 20 minutes she was a wreck.

The 8th (Kings Royal Irish) Hussars, Royal Armoured Corps, landed at Le Hamel on 9th June 1944 as part of the DDay invasion of Normandy. My Uncle Trooper George Attwood was a member of the Regiment, and was killed in action on 14th June 1944 during the Battle of The Brigade Box. This web site contains some of my researches into his death and the Regiment's involvement in the invasion. It contains extracts from a history of the 7th Armoured Division, a photogallery, Roll of Honour and illustrations from a War Department training manual entitled "Tank Hunting".
